The article examines cross-border recovery of maintenance in the EU, focusing on Regulation No 4/2009, which harmonises rules on jurisdiction, applicable law, recognition, enforcement, and the role of Central Authorities. The abolition of exequatur for Member States bound by the 2007 Hague Protocol has accelerated enforcement but significant challenges remain: fragmented jurisdiction rules, procedural differences between national enforcement systems, and limited access to debtor information. Digitalisation, particularly through iSupport and e-CODEX, is identified as a solution that may increase efficiency and consistency in cross-border cases. The article concludes that minimal harmonisation of enforcement procedures and stronger digital tools are necessary to strengthen mutual trust, enhance efficiency, and provide better protection of children’s rights.
