Od tedna do tedna SLABE MANIRE > a MERIKANSKI SLOVE- /V NEC z dne 15. junija citira v uredniški koloni par stavkov jz nekega članka znamenitega ameriškega znanstvenika dr. In dr. G oste - konvenčnike smo imeli v Clevelandu. Lepo število jih je bilo. Neka¬ teri so bili že prej med nami. Mnogi so bili prvič tukaj. In zdaj pišejo in poročajo. Logika razmer ga direkt¬ no sili v to. In s človeškimi prizadevanji ni prav nič drugače. He stepped off the base during a 0 j pitch, and the side was retired. Trail 0 [ Blazers were as tame as lambs until the _j ninth inning. Vic’s were leading 9 to 5. 2 | Tome, the first man up, singled just in- side the first base. Berger’s fourth futile E | attempt was a fly to right field. Then 0 j Okleshen pulled one over the third 0 j base, and while the bali was being re- q j trieved, he scored behind Tome. Carlig q j followed with a single between second and short, held the bag while Brolick fouled to pitcher for the second out, and reached third on Jacksi’s single to right. Joe took second on the throw in. For a minute it appeared that the 4 j game was over, when Willie Tršar, a Trail Blazer Junior, sent a wicked grounder to F. Pouhe at short. Pouhe trapped the bali, but instead of tagging the runner going to third, he attempted, to get the man at first. While stretching his arm for the throw he stuck it right at Jacksi racing for third, dropping the bali. He claimed interference, and while arguing with the ump, Bill Tršar raced ali the way around and home with the fifth run of inning making the score 10 to 9 in favor of Trail Blazers. The stars of the game were Carlig at third and Ernest Vrhovnik batching for Trail Blazers, while for Victorians Venisnik was outstanding with several good catches in left field. The num- ber would have been greater had the early comers stayed. But Nellie had a date, Lou a union meeting, Aliče a shower, etc. ... An unexpected visitor was Bro. Louis Levstik of Cleveland, the former Supreme Secretary, who happened to pass through Chicago on his way back home from a trip to the Arrovvhead Country in Northern Min¬ nesota. Mr. Levstik was the organizer of Trail Blazers’ Lodge and he is stili very fond of us. However, ten years ago 95 per cent of the members attended the meetlngs, he said. He expressed a hope that the lodge will number at least 100 members when he comes around again. Whereupon our president resolved that from now on a “100 members” sign will hang suspended in back of the officers’ desk until said number of members will be reached. Including the Trail Blazers Jrs. we number about 115 members. Tony Ule, the dean of TB bachelors, came around again. He worked nights for the past several months. Another face not seen at the meetings for ages was that of Math Grahek. He had a rea- son to be present—a brand new La Salle šport coupe. The free assessment was won by Ted Stoffle. Ted and Millie missed several such awards previously, so they made a firm mind to be present at every meet¬ ing'. The wheel of fortune spun in their favor. Tickets for the Chicago SSPZ Federa- tion picnic were distributed among those present. Indications are that the 60 tickets intended for Trail Blazers will Continued from page 4 I remembered not to forget them ... In a few minutes we were driving up “meandering” Sygan Hill and, shortly, vvelcome hands were being squeezed in mine . . . Among the first to be introduced to me were the Kramzars’ (it was at their home I first visited) ... I met Julia, the Vrtec secretary, and Julia, her mother and Vrtec supervisor, who has already done so much to help make the SSPZ popular in this vicinity . . . Others of the family were soon entered in my book of new faces . . . Sister Mary Visnikar and ali the Vrtec officers and members were next.. . The attendance here was as nearly perfect as one could wish and certainly it was among the finest and neatest looking groups of boys and girls I’ve had the pleasure of meeting . . . In a little while, their pictures were taken . . . Then the program of the evening opened . . . The welcome address was given by the Vrtec treasurer, Henry Ursic . . . Three instrumental solos, one each by Paul Chappel, Junior Krek and Henry Ursic, fol- lowed in rapid order . . . Short talks by brothers Leo Mur, John Kvartich, Supreme President, and myself came next and then the movies . . . Warm-as it was, few people left the hali before the program was completed ... As reward for their excellent behavior, performance and work in recent months, an appetizing lunch was served in the lower hali to ali Vrtec members ... At 11:30 we left Sygan for Strabane, but not before having a chat with Julia Kramzar, Dorothy Usnic, Frank Dolinar, Henry Ur¬ sic and Paul Chappel, ali of whom are active officers of one of our most thriving Vrtec units . . . Congratulations to brother Mur and sisters Julia Kramzar and Mary Visnikar who have been largely responsible for the commendable work that.is be¬ ing done in Sygan among our Vrtec members . . . May the fu- ture yield even greater successes. The Challengers’ Rose Dance was stili in progress \vhen we reached Strabane . . . The hali was filled to capacity . . . Five carloads of Spartans and Utopians helped swell the throngs mingling in and outside the hali . . . Everybody seemed to be having a grand time . . . Visitors were there Hom Cleveland, Bridgeville, Sygan, Niles, O., Washington, Burgettstown, Re- public, Meadowlands, Canonsburg and many neighboring towns. They raved about the mušic, decorations, friendliness of the peo¬ ple, etc . . . The Challengers’ 3rd Anniversary Rose Dance is re- corded as a huge success and should prove another sales talk medium for inducing prospects in the Strabane-Canonsburg communities to join the SSPZ. Sunday evening found us motoring to Burgettstown where another group of SSPZ youngsters were awaiting our arrival . . . Here, brother Eddie Lounder, secretary of the Vrtec, a bright fellow if ever there was one, sister Hannah Laurence, hard- working secretary of the Pirates, Lodge No. 234, Anna Lesko- vich, Vrtec president and John Shuble, vice-president, and sev¬ eral other adult and junior members were arranging the tables o|and chairs for the “Bingo Party” which was scheduled to pre- ceed the movies, dancing and refreshments ... As the hours of o the evening wore on, we met and talked with brothers and sisters Joseph Durko (Pirate president), August, Jennie, Mary and Frances Ferbežar, Rudy, Joe and Margaret Vajentic, Marinch sisters, Guber sisters, Frank Laurich (formerly of the Supreme Auditing Board), Frances Laurich, Tony Kucic and Andy “Spi- der” Shuble, (who, as Vrtec members made a never-to-be-for- gotten impression on the minds of the spectators at our 1936 National Athletic Meet in Chicago), Mary Dugas (all-around athlete), Ray “Red” Daniels and his bride of a few days (just back from their honeymoon) and ali the others ... It certainly was good to meet them ali again, and from what I was told, I’m sure, Cleveland will be our next meeting plače . . . It’s where I am as I bring this article to a close today .. . Z. 1 / Biggest Outdoor Affair of the SSPZ in Years By Michael Vrhovnik Come — join again with me on my tour of the SSPZ — Leaving the Challenger Juniors at Willow Beach on the after- noon of June 5th, vvhere and \vhen they were having another of their celebrated outings, we will now take you to Sygan, the home of Vrtec No. 72 and Lodge No. 89 — But, before we arrive there, let us first see what took plače in the meantime . . . Now, this may not seem interesting to most of you, but j ust for the sake of variety and because I feel that it is in order, let s see just \vhat did happen between the time I left Willow Beach and when I pulled in at the home of brother Leo Mur, secretary of Lodge No. 89 and the administrator of the Vrtec at Sygan, in the little town of Presto. In order to cover a lot of ground in this second installment of my “Juvenile Month” tour, I’m forced to write what I call a “skip and jump” column. . . There will be plenty of skipping and certainly quite a bit of jumping, so if I fail to mention your name or some incident you were connected with during the course of my visit in your community, don’t think it was done intentionally, but rather blame it on the “heat” and the amber fluid which first dazzled and then dimmed the eyes and numbed the “cogs” of memory. Saturday afternoon with the hands of an ancient “ticker- tocker” fast approaching 4 o’ciock . . . There, in the “sitting- room” of “Ye Old Mansiori,” I sat, hurriedly, jotting down a few notes on the day’s events — My shirt was off, for it was hotter than the devil, himself, that afternoon. . . I hadn’t quite finished \vriting \vhen the “toot” of a horn and the hum of a motor broke the silence. . . Then someone \vas heard to address “Uncle” Char- ley Koman — The sourfd of a bevy of mixed voices and laughter follovved almost immediately, and before I had time to get up out of my chair I was surrounded by “Uncle” Charlie, Joe Zor¬ man, Eddie Deitz, Stan Žagar, Eddie Centa, Bill Perusek, Celesta Deitz and her sister, and several others whose names I can’t re- call at this writing . . . They were ali in a hilarious mood and full of wide-awake devilment . . . And there I stood, caught with my shirt off and exposed, perhaps, more than I’ve ever been, to the joking “stabs” of a fun-hunting group of Spartans and Utopians who, in company with fifteen or sixteen others came ali the way from Cleveland to attend the Challengers’ 3rd.An- niversary Rose Dance . . . They stayed only a few minutes before moving on to Canonsburg’s “downtown” and other points ol’ more or less importance —^ Stopping an hour at Drenik’s Colony Grili where a bite of something to eat and a swallow or two of a combination of fluids was had to wet and appease their parch- ed “whistles” and warm and fill their thundering stomachs . . . When they \vere gone, I made ready for my visit to Sygan an hour hence ... I saw and heard no more of them until late that evening upon my return. Scheduled to appear at Sygan at 6:00 o’clock, I rushed things so that I was nearly half way there before I discovered that the movie films had been left behind. .. Turning around, the distance \vas soon re-negotiated, but not without having a second “tardy” mark credited to my report, making it twice in a row on con- secutive days . . . If this were going to school, the sting of a pad- dle would warm the seat of my pants 'ere the evening sun sank behind the Western hills . . . But thanks to my lucky stars and advanced years, my “flailing” adventures (wherein I was the unhappy recipient) are, I hope, permanently ended . . . But this is roaming off the subject, again . . . At Presto, we stopped at the home of brother Leo Mur where we found him and his family anxiously and patiently watching for my arrival, and wondering between questionable doubts whether I would keep my promise to stop there first or go right on to Sygan . . . Being distantly related to the elephant, Continued on page 3 Chicago Will Be Host to Balkanites From Milvvaukee. More than 200 people stili re- mained on the premises, when a high wind and the first drops of rain scat- tered the people back to their cars and and sent them scurrying tovvards home. Later on the picnic terminated in a so¬ cial held at Starc’s. Several balina contests were sched¬ uled, Trail Blazer girls losing to the ladies of No. 19 by the tune of 10 to 24, while Trail Blazers scored a last minute 8 points to noše out Lodge No. 100 boys 24 to 23. Lodge No. 100 led at one time by the score of 16 to 0, but TB’s kept on trying and succeeded to bring the score 23 to 16 in favor of their oppon- ents. Then the unexpected 8 point splurge and an unexpected vietory. V. Tome, Ernest Vrhovnik, Tony Ule and M. G. Kuhel rolled for TB’s, and P. Vrhovnik, J. Puzel, Ed. Arko and Andy Zadnik for No. 100. Dolly Tisol, Zora Knudsen, Pauline Kuhel and Valerie Putz of Trail Blazers played against Mrs. Rus, Mrs. Puzel, Mrs. Orazem and Mrs. Vrhovnik, representing No. 19 (the last three really belong to No. 100). The aforementioned storm spoiled the finals. In a practice ballgame Trail Blazers nosed out Victorians 10 to 9, climaxing a 7th inning rally with 5 runs with two out. Victorians scored the first run in the first inning when J. Pouhe singled, Joe Potsch was safe on a boot by Okle- shen, and walks to Kalan and Vidmar, foreing in Pouhe. Trail Blazers came back with 4 runs in the same stanza. Ernest Vrhovnik doubled over short- stop’s head, L. Tome walked, so did Carlig. Bill Brolick brought ali three in with a double over left fielder’s head and scored himself on another bingle by Joe Jacksi, the pitcher. Car- lig made the score 5 to 1 against Vic’s by poling a long homerun in the third. Victorians went to town in the fourth inning, scoring 6 runs on 5 hits. J. Pouhe singled, J. Potsch doubled to left. send- ing Pouhe to third. Venisnik brought both of them across the home plate by doubling in the same direction, but was (Continued on page 3) Utopians Second Barn Dance Sponsored by the Baseball Team eumpreie F u g iam of enter- not just an Insurance agen y. - , * center c| tainment and events that will j community life—the pioneers m bu d g ai onal homes . tional activities are far from dead. lake the yearly SSPZ L It’s a sure sign that summer is on its way when plans for the Annual Barn Dance is now in progress. However, to the Spartans and Utopians of Cleve¬ land we Challengers send this mes- sage: Our personal feelings were never more meant, We Challengers would like to send you both power, Povver so almighty, that nothing on universe can overthrow; Power to smile and laugh awhile, As journeying thru fraternal life you go. These, however, are only fanciful wishes. We would much rather send you Our whole-hearted friendship in- stead. We’ll clasp you by the hand when- ever we meet, Meaning a great deal more to us j than any fancy words that can be said. In- stead of having our meetings every 3rd Wednesday of every month at 7, it has been changed to every 3rd Wed of the month to 8:00. Now that the beautiful month of May is over and our worries of school are over, we will have to work just as hard for our Vrtec, as vve did in school, to make our Vrtec a big suc¬ cess and try to enjoy working for our Vrtec as we enjoyed doing our school work. If we work hard for our Vrtec, I am sure we can have good times such as picnics, going on hikes some of the seed will be lost. This smaller number of the younger people in the lodges € tend some day to an amalgamation of the various Yugoslavfnt' ernal organizations. This will strengthen the movement, when does come, to exist just as easily as the Moo.se, Elks and Ma: cabees of today. Another bright light on the horizon is the organization 1 strong junior lodges. These will tend to bring in the coming g* eration. Perhaps it should have been done before vvith us s is would make our ESL stronger today. But it will dol work even if it is late in starting.
