Nič se ni zgodilo, na vrata trka leto 2012. Tehnologija je v tem času čudovito hitro napredovala in se še razvija, da se marsikatero krat vprašam kaj vse še nas čaka, ali smo ji sploh kos. V imenu Slovenskega društva Melbourne vam želim vsem vesele in blagoslovljene božične praznike. V novem letu pa veliko radosti, prijetnih trenutkov, ljubezni, nadvse pa veliko zdravja. WHAT IS HAPPENING AT SDM •s/ Dragi Clani/Hello fellow members, Since September much activity has taken place at SDM: • The first floor servery has been refurbished and turned into a full commercial kitchen. • We have successfully held two events in November, the first being our Cup Day Working bee which was attended by 30 people (one of the best turnouts for years); and the All Soul's Day prayers on Sunday 6th November to commemorate our deceased members led by Pater Ciril Božič. In the two months of October & November the Treasurer, Julija Campelj and I have met with the young generation on a few occasions to progress their ideas about our future and as a result the first thing decided was to increase our membership about which Frances Urbas-Johnson has written a separate article. This sub committee is also well on its way in setting up an SDM website & facebook on the internet because that is how our young generation communicate, and it is also organising its first function for next February. There is still a lot to be done! The Management Committee has decided to hold three functions in December: • St Miklavž on Sunday 4th December at 2.30 pm • Boxing day on Monday 26th starting at twelve noon • New Years Eve Party on Saturday 31st December to be held outside under our Marquee. No events are to be held in January 2012 and the committee will have a break before the start of a busy schedule from February to July when we hold our next AGM. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Management Committee, the Young Generation Sub-committee and everyone else who has contributed in any way during the last six months for their hard work and perseverance. It has been a pleasure to serve as president with such a wonderful and enthusiastic group. Lastly, I sincerely wish you all have a Holy Christmas and a happy and safe New Year. We will see you in the new Year. Till the next newsletter, Nasvidenje/Cheers Stan Penca President NOVA GENERACIJA SE OGLAŠA Slovensko društvo Melbourne poskuša v svoje dolgotrajno, ponosno in uspešno delovanje na najboljši način pridobiti čim več članov nove -mlajše generacije avstralskih Slovencev. Frances Urbas-Johnson V imenu pododbora Nove generacije Slovencev (Hvala Dragi Gelt za prevod v slovenščino -Frances) SDM is currently holding a membership drive, and we would like to encourage the next generation of young Australian Slovenians to join this proud, long-established club. We are planning a number of new events and activities at the club that cater for younger people whilst capturing our Slovenian heritage. If your children and/or grandchildren are over 18 years of age, please ask them if they would be interested in joining. One of the problems is that we don't even bother to ask younger people anymore, so they don't feel that they are a part of the club and that it is just a place for the first generation Australian Slovenians. This is no longer the case and we are committed to bringing vibrancy, fun and life back to this wonderful club. Enclosed in this newsletter is an application form for membership - pass it on to your children and their partners, and the club will continue to prosper, bringing a touch of Slovenia to all of us! If you would like any further information please contact the club on 9437 1226. Thank you for your support. Frances Urbas-Johnson On behalf of the Sub-committee for New Generation Slovenians DOGODIVŠČINE SDM NOVEMBERSKE MOLITVE Mesec november je čas ko se še posebno spomnimo naših pokojnih, obiščemo grobove ali se jih spomnimo v posebni molitvi in obujamo na njih spomine. CRUISING HOLIDAY Sandra Krnel On the 1st November 22 Slovenians met at Melbourne Airport to start cruising into 14 days of blissful relaxation. We flew to Sydney, where we met up with 2 more Slovenians from Brisbane. After a few hours' delay (I think the ship had a flat tyre), we were finally able to board the "Dawn Princess" where we were met by some of the wonderful crew who were going to look after us for the next two weeks. Each passenger was issued with a plastic ID card which we used to not only enter our rooms, but also for any purchases onboard as the ship is "cashless". The only place where cash was involved was the Casino and I can guarantee that several dollars were exchanged in that room!!! (Shh, what goes on board stays on board!!!) Dawn Princess After boarding, our first thing was finding our rooms (called Staterooms) and unpack our suitcases. We were all very fortunate to have been upgraded to rooms with a balcony where we could sit and enjoy the view fresh air. After unpacking it was time for dinner - there were always choices of a buffet dinner or one of two Restaurants where you ordered from an a-la-carte menu. Our group had three tables permanently booked in the Florentine Room for dinner where we caught up each evening. There were also a "Grill Room", "Pizzeria" and lots of bars if you wanted something lighter or a top-up between meals. At about 8.30pm we finally sailed off under the Sydney Harbour Bridge heading for our destination, the South Pacific Islands. During the trip we visited New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Lifou, Savu Savu and Suva. As the whole idea of the cruise was very flexible, we made our own decisions as to whether we actually left the ship, toured the islands or just shopped (yes, a lot of shopping happened). Some tours were pre- organised but most of us just caught taxis or mini-buses which took us around the islands and were more intimate as the groups were smaller. Like in any other place, there were affluent areas and poorer areas. We were driven through all of them as well as their cultural sites - all well worth seeing. Speaking of culture, every evening we were able to enjoy a live program in the Princess Theatre. There were the Dawn Princess singers & dancers, a magician evening, a comedian evening. Every evening they put a Newsletter (Princess Patters) on our beds which outlined what was happening on board the next day. Lots of daily activities like: Photography courses, Yoga, Pilates, Gymnasium, Bingo, Trivia and more. There were games & tables in the Casino where you could sit and play cards, scrabble, chess, etc. Have I mentioned the swimming pools and hot spas? Plus there was a huge outdoor theatre screen showing movies in the evening. There were three Formal Evenings where we could wear our tiaras, plus a huge Deck Party where we put on our grass skirts (no, we didn't). If you weren't in the mood for any activities, then there was a special corner on Deck 12 where there were usually a few people from our group relaxing and chatting - we called it the "Slovenian Corner". On both Sundays there was an inter-denominatianal service and on the 11th November we gathered on the top deck at 11.00am where there was a Remembrance Day Ceremony. Now for some statistics which might interest you. There were about 2,000 passengers and 900 crew onboard (although the Kitchen was insiting there were 12,000 passengers judging by how much food was being eaten). On an average day the following was consumed: 9,000 eggs (that's a lot of chooks); 400kg watermelon; 400kg potatoes; 1,590 litres of soup; 450kg flour to make Sweet rolls, croissants, vol-au-vents, bread sticks, biscuits, pizza and bread rolls; 4,050 assorted pastries; 150kg sugar; 172kg butter; 2,204kg fresh fruit; 1,210 litres coffee. Kitchen washing each day: 50,100 dishes; 16,500 glasses and 227 litres of detergent. A total of 306 people are responsible for the dining area (including chefs, bakers, pastry cooks, waiters, etc.). The crew members from the whole ship were absolutely sensational - nothing was too much trouble. They work 7 days a week on set contracts from about 6 to 9 months each time, followed by a few months off and hopefully they are offered another contract. They are provided with accommodation and, obviously, food/drink, so what they earn, they save. Most of them are from the Phillipines as well as some from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, India, China & Thailand. On the 15th November we sailed back into Sydney past the Opera House and back under the bridge. We docked at about 7.00am and by 9.00am we were collecting our suitcases, saying our goodbyes and heading for the airport. Before I sign off, I would like to thank Meta Lenarcic and Marta Ogrizek for organising this trip. We had a wonderful group of people and thankfully there were no accidents (but there were a couple of sickies, which were not too serious). There has been talk of more cruises in the future - some of us would go back next week!! ***** V Sloveniji bodo predčasne volitve v nedeljo 4. decembra.
