(Prim. First Reading Jeremiah 38:4-6. 8-10 The prophet Jeremiah is paying for his outspokenness and faithfulness to God but at the last moment is saved. Second Reading Hebrews 12:1-4 Be bold in following the teachings of Jesus. Gospel Luke 12:49-53 Jesus says he has come to bring not peace, but division. “Do you suppose that I am here to bring peace on earth?” Illustration A week ago, peace campaigners around the world marked seventy-seven years since the single most destructive weapon ever un-leashed upon human beings and the environ-ment – the atomic bomb – was dropped by an American plane on the Japanese city of Hiro-shima on 6 August 1945. It killed approxi-mately 80,000 people instantly. Three days later, a second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, immediately killing an estimated 40,000 people, with tens of thousands dying later because of radiation poisoning. Blessing the crews and their two missions was Fr George Zabelka, the Catholic chaplain to the atomic bomb group. In the years that fol-lowed, Fr Zabelka had what he called an “about face”, coming to the conclusion that he had been wrong to bless the bombs. In 1985, he made a pilgrimage walk from Hiroshima to Nagasaki to mark the fortieth anniversary of the bombings. He asked those harmed by the bombings for forgiveness for himself and for his Church, “for bringing you death instead of the full-ness of life, misery instead of mercy”. He dedicated the rest of his life to teaching the way of non-violence as shown and taught by Jesus. The issue of nuclear weapons was, and still is, a divisive one in the Church and in wider society. “I was told the raids were necessary; told openly by the military and told implicitly by my Church’s leader-ship,” said Fr Zabelka. Many did not agree with his change of heart. Despite the first ever UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons entering into force in January 2021, none of the nations that pos-sess nuclear weapons have ratified it. Gospel Teaching In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells the disciples that he has come to bring fire on earth. He asks them: “Do you suppose that I am here to bring peace on earth?” He then answers his own question: “No”. Perhaps the disciples had assumed that the answer would be “Yes”. But as Jesus carried out his public ministry, it became clear that he was simply too radi-cal for some people. His mere presence was enough to divide families into those who were in favour of him and those who were against him: father against son, daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law, and so on. For many, fol-lowing Jesus was just too risky. Though the message of Jesus is peace, it is a hard -won peace that may at times seem more like divi-sion, because he is opposing the corruption of the world. He knows that the radical purity of his mes-sage will cause people to doubt and oppose it. Jesus’ message was hard but honest. It was about challeng-ing the powerful and tackling injustice. No one who hears and considers his words could feel misled about the cost of discipleship or the fact that it can make enemies as well as friends. Application With all the divisiveness present in society, it seems like the last thing we need is a Gospel text that seemingly encourages more division. However, some-times we need to be shaken out of complacency. The message of Jesus is not just about being nice. It means being angry at times, confronting injustice and unfair systems, and making a stand. The Gospel is a call to conversion. In the case of nuclear weapons, those countries that possess them keep them poised to attack an aggressor at any time. This is despite hav-ing a treaty to ban nuclear weapons in force. It is now illegal under international law to develop, manufac-ture, transfer, possess, use or threaten to use nuclear weapons. While this has been welcomed by Pope Francis and the bishops of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, there is some ambivalence within the Church and within society. Am I a lukewarm follower of Jesus or do I share his passion in spreading the kingdom according to my abilities? Following Jesus can bring us into confronta-tion with others, even with our closest and dearest. Let us seek wisdom and fortitude to know how best to deal with situations when our beliefs lead to differ-ences with those around us. Jesus’ call to discipleship compels hard choices. Being a peacemaker will not mean everyone agreeing. Those who follow Jesus, particularly adhering to the social teaching of the Church, will find tensions inside and outside the faith community. We cannot get too comfortable if we are serious about building God’s kingdom. But the im-portant thing is to try to resolve differences with love while being faithful to the teachings of Jesus. BARAGA’S CONNECTION TO NIAGARA FALLS Follow in Bishop Baraga's footsteps by visiting Niagara Falls. Baraga made two trips to the famous falls, one in 1836 and a second in 1858. During his 1858 trip he spent the night at the Suspension Bridge over the St. Lawrence (Niagara) River, at the foot of the Niagara Falls and referred to it in his diary as a "stupendous work": "...In the evening I continued my journey and came to the Suspension Bridge where I spent the night. This Suspension Bridge over St. Lawrence (Niagara) River, at the foot of Niagara Falls, is a stupendous work so solid that the heaviest train runs over it in safety." -Bishop Frederic Baraga The Niagara Falls Suspension Bridge stood from 1855 to 1897 across the Niagara River and was the world's first working railway suspension bridge. It spanned 825 feet (251 m) and stood 2.5 miles (4.0 km) downstream of Niagara Falls, where it con-nected Niagara Falls, Ontario to Niagara Falls, New York. Heavier trains required it to be replaced by the Steel Arch Bridge, later renamed the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge, on August 27, 1897. SVETE MAŠE - MASSES 14. 8. 2022 - 21. 8. 2022 20.
