Asian Studies sorely lacks diversity in the ethnic, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds of its practitioners. Few will be startled to learn that the field is dominated by scholars from Asia and the West-a reality so entrenched that some may question what issue it poses or how it could be otherwise. Even hinting that this homogeneity is problematic risks provoking unease or irritation, particularly among well-established scholars, whether consciously acknowledged or not. Yet there are strong grounds to see this state of affairs as genuinely troubling, and to insist that steps be taken to address it. This special edition of Asian Studies is one concrete response: it stages a different point of departure for the field by bringing together 21 scholars from or based in Latin America.
