In this paper, we discuss, from a personal perspective, the beginnings and development of discrete mathematics and theoretical computer science in Slovenia, with particular emphasis on graph theory. In the first part, we attempt to define the concept of discrete mathematics, which emerged in the middle of the twentieth century but has its roots in a much older recreational mathematics. We briefly outline some of the changes in mathematics in Slovenia toward the end of the Plemelj era. This topic has already been thoroughly discussed by Vlado Batagelj in two contributions: Razvoj diskretne matematike v Sloveniji, Zbornik za zgodovino naravoslovja in tehnike 18 (145-179), Slovenska matica, 2024, and Diskretna matematika in računalništvo (ter analiza podatkov) in Sto let matematike in fizike na Univerzi v Ljubljani (171-185), University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, 2020. In 2011, Boštjan Kuzman prepared the exhibition Oris razvoja teorije grafov v Sloveniji, accompanied by the bilingual catalogue Mejniki.
