Neurodegenerative diseases belong to a field where up-todate therapies have not yet succeeded in finding a complete cure, or at least in slowing down the progress of the disease to an adequate degree. Given the current understanding of the origins of these diseases, which include loss of function and death of brain cells, research has begun to explore the possibility of treating these diseases using the potential of stem cells, which can be differentiated in vitro into the desired cell types and could help to replace lost/damaged tissue. Different types of stem cells are thus being explored for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
