With the help of legal criteria archivists appraise records. The purpose of this paper is to provide a historical overview of the development of the appraisal process in Slovenia and the adoption of the legal basis necessary for this process. The historical overview of the appraisal process is presented, from the very beginning of the implementation of this process until today, when it has legal basis. The comparative method shows the development of approaches to appraisal in comparison with the international environment.
