The skin microbiota is a community of all microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, viruses, microeukaryotes, and bacteriophages) on and in the skin, whereas the set of their genomes is called the skin microbiome. It has been proven that the microbiota is an important biological barrier that, in symbiosis with the skin, protects the organism and enables the normal function of the immune system. It is important to know the factors that can positively or negatively affect the microbiota, and thus maintain its healthy state or disturb the balance in the microbial community, i.e. they cause dysbiosis. The knowledge about species composition and roles of individual microorganisms in the microbiota is also important for understanding of the skin condition and potential pathological changes that occured. Based on this knowledge the approaches to improve the skin condition or treatment of skin diseases associated with the skin barrier dysfunction can be designed.
