This means that it will also be time for SLOVENIAN SCHOOL. If you have a child in Kindergarten or older in English school, he/she is eligible to enroll in Slovenian School. Be proud of your culture and heritage! As descendants of our small Slovenian nation, let's make it possible for our children to become acquainted with their ancestral homeland and learn Slovenian. One day they will thank you for having the foresight and the interest in sending them to Slovenian school, as many already have done. We all feel the need to offer our children extra curricular activities in sports, music, dance, etc. Don't you think that it is just as important to offer them the opportunity to broaden their intellect by learning the language of their parent or grandparents? We urge you to think about it and send your children to SLOVENIAN SCHOOL! Our programs are easily comprehended. They are geared towards the ability of the children. They are made along the lines of the ones we use in English schools so that they can be easily followed and understood. Our level one program is geared towards children who do not speak any Slovenian. Accordingly, they concentrate on vocabulary building by listening to stories, tapes, videos, games and conversation, etc. - with no formal reading and writing, to prepare them for level 2 where they will be eased into reading and writing in Slovenian only when they are ready for it. Registration for SLOVENIAN SCHOOL is on September 6, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 noon in the classroom behind the upper hall. Although our goal is to teach the children to read, write and speak Slovenian, more importantly, it is to instil into them a Slovenian identity, a feeling of love and pride towards their Slovenian roots and their cultural heritage, which your own parents worked so hard to maintain. Because our Slovenian School is a part of the Slovenian community, it also gives the children a sense of belonging. It is a place where they make lasting friendships. Our children are the guarantee for the continuance of our Slovenian identity. It is important that we work together to keep their interest alive. We, on our part, are striving to make it interesting for them. Since the summer of 2000 and generally every 4 years, we organize an excursion of Slovenia for our students, to give them the opportunity to see and experience Slovenia, first hand. The last four excursions were unforgettable for the children, a great success, so we look forward to organizing another one down the road. In turn, dear parents, you must do your part as well! Please give SLOVENIAN SCHOOL your full consideration and register your children on September 6th. If you have friends, who are of Slovenian background and this notice does not reach them, please tell them and encourage them to send their children to our school. If you are uncertain about enrolling your children in Slovenian School, please feel free to visit our school and see its set up, observe our classes and talk to the teachers. The Head-Teacher, Sandy Allen, can also be reached at (905) 548-0889. Be proud that you are Slovenian and give your children the same opportunity! We look forward to seeing you at REGISTRATION on SEPTEMBER 6, at 10:00 A.M. Second Reading - Romans 12:1-2 Our lives are to be changed, but not by the world around us. Gospel - Matthew 16:21-27 Jesus' rebuke to Peter shows that our thoughts are not always in line with God's way of thinking. "Get behind me, Satan!" Illustration We're encouraged these days to watch what we eat. Yet when we're trying to do so, we may find it's not that easy. And we can be torn in two directions. There are always those ready to tell us that we're looking fine, so, "Go on, have another one, it won't do you any harm!" And there are those who are all too keen to look at us, shake their heads and knowingly tell us that it would be good to try to lose a little weight - which can be very demoralising. The fact remains, we may know what we should do; but do we have the determination to do it? There was a man who, on his drive to work every morning, would stop en route by a bakery and buy a big iced cake. Eventually he decided that a diet was necessary. So he started driving past the bakery each morning without stopping. Then one morning his colleagues noticed he had a cake. They asked, "What happened to the diet?" The man replied, "This morning, I thought, if God wants me to have a cake he'll give me a parking space in front of the baker's - and he did! Mind you, I did have to drive round the block nine times before I found it." Gospel Teaching Today's Gospel passage is a damning one for poor Peter. Jesus calls him "Satan". All Peter has done is try to console Jesus and give his support. Jesus has got to the point in their relationship when he wants to share with the disciples what is going to happen. He says that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer and die. He also makes it clear that he will rise again on the third day. The disciples don't seem to have focused on the rising from the dead but rather on the suffering and dying. Peter says to Jesus, "Heaven preserve you, Lord... This must not happen to you." Last Sunday we heard Jesus speaking to Peter in a different way: "You are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church." The place where Jesus says this in Matthew's Gospel is only five verses before today's "Get behind me, Satan!" The change in tone happens so quickly - it's almost as if Jesus says one thing in one breath and then something different in the next. We have Peter's strength put before us in the "You are Peter" verse; and then suddenly we have his weakness in the "Get behind me, Satan!" statement so soon after. Peter has many wonderful qualities, and we rejoice in them. However, the scriptures make sure that we are aware of Peter's failings, too: for example, when Peter is walking on the water, he panics and cries out for help; and ultimately Peter tells Jesus he will die for him but then denies Jesus and runs away. Peter is a real person of flesh and blood, full of all the bravery and fears involved in discipleship, yet he is an example that we do well to follow. When he makes mistakes, Peter never gives in to despair but comes back time and time again to Jesus, even though that means taking up the cross on a daily basis. Application Are we not basically the same as Peter in his humanness and unworthiness? Could Jesus say the same to us, "Get behind me, Satan"? Probably many, if not all of us, can think of moments in our lives when Jesus could say that to us. But let us also remember the things that we have done or the person we have been that would make Jesus proud of us. One of the reasons that we come to church is to help us to be better followers of Jesus. Yet at the same time we can be so conscious of our sinfulness and failure that we are left feeling helpless on the road to holiness. Today let us focus on what Jesus is telling us in this Sunday's Gospel. He is saying to each one of us, "If you want to be my follower you have to pick up your cross and follow me every day." It's not an easy road that we're offered, and at times we'll find ourselves tempted to take a different direction. We know what Jesus calls us to do - do we have the determination to do it? And when we fail, do we have the faith to turn to Jesus again?
