Gregorija Velikega. Slovenski Koordinacijski obor Niagara in posamezni zaslužni člani so prejeli odlikovanja in prizanja: od republike Slovenija: g. Drago Gačnik in Magda Razpotnik iz rok ga. Irene Gril, odpravnice poslov v Ottawi. Rešnjemu Telesu in Krvi. Predsedniki društev so slovesno prinesli zastave in bandera v cerkev, sodelovali so pri branju prošenj in prinesli darove. Hvala vsem Vam za voščila, molitve in darove. Bog vam povrni! The Parish Council at St. Gregory the Great Slovenian Parish wishes to thank the following volunteers for their assistance at last weeks special events. First Reading Acts 12:1-11 No earthly prison can hold captive the trusting heart. Second Reading 2 Timothy 4:6-8. 17-18 Whatever happens in life, the Lord's whole purpose is to bring us to his heavenly kingdom. Gospel Matthew 16:13-19 It is not flesh and blood that reveals the Christ, but the Father in heaven speaks to flesh and blood. It is humanity in its weakness that has received the keys of the kingdom of heaven. "You are the Christ... the Son of the living God." Illustration There is a practice, known to some people as "Bible bingo", in which the Bible is opened at random and the passage we happen upon is seen as a special message. This can become a superstitious way of reading the Bible, but sometimes it is a way of stopping us reading the same old passages. One young Catholic did allow himself to do this back in the mid 1980s, when he arrived late at night in Lourdes, to work in a place called the Cité Saint-Pierre. The place provides free or cheap accommodation for people who can't afford to pay hotel prices. The young volunteer opened his Bible that night, and found today's first reading about St Peter being imprisoned. The next day, he discovered that this place had been started as a pro- ject by French former prisoners of war, and had based itself on the theme of St Peter in Chains, an old feast that is no longer in the Church's calendar. His job for three weeks was to conduct tours, and he became very familiar with the various symbols of imprisonment throughout the place. The former prisoners of war had gathered at Lourdes just after the war, and had wished to draw out of their imprisonment something permanent and valuable. One particularly moving symbol of imprisonment was a large wooden cross that had been carried on foot to Lourdes all the way from Hungary, after the failure of the rising against the Communist regime in 1956. Gospel Teaching St Peter and St Paul both have their own separate feasts in the Church's calendar, the Chair of St Peter and the Conversion of St Paul, but today's feast is a feast of their martyrdom. It is a curious fact that in the Acts of the Apostles, although St Luke probably knew about their deaths, he doesn't see fit to describe these deaths. St Peter, after he is released from prison, goes to see the members of the Church, leaves a message for "James and the brothers", and then leaves and goes to "another place". That is the last we hear of him. St Paul, too, after we have seen him make his way to Rome as prisoner, and so would expect an account of his martyrdom, is simply described as being under guard but able to continue his work of evangelisation "with complete freedom and without hindrance from anyone". And that is where the Acts of the Apostles ends. It is their fidelity and courage that matter, and we see that here. St Luke leaves us St Peter and St Paul doing what they do. St Peter goes off to "another place", possibly Rome, and St Paul continues with his work. They are preachers of the Gospel and this is what gives meaning to their deaths. Their lives may come to an end, but not their work. Prison is no obstacle to them. They will always find enough freedom to continue their work; and this is a message for the Church, which, as we can see again and again throughout her history, despite times of persecution and opposition, despite times when her activities have been restricted, continues her life and her witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Application St Peter and St Paul were very different types of people. They didn't always agree. Yet they shared a common purpose and it is the Spirit of the living Christ that guided them to the final summit of witness, their martyrdom in Rome. They endured imprisonment, torture and death for the sake of the Christ they believed in. Like the French prisoners of war in Lourdes, they realised that to be truly free, it is not enough to be simply released from restrictions. They had to create freedom and to share it with others. This required not just a humble willingness to listen to others but also a courageous commitment to the truths that they both knew and were ultimately ready to die for. Finding the middle ground between these two virtues, humility and courage, is not easy, but the virtue of hope makes a unity of the two, just as the power of the Holy Spirit would bind these two remarkable servants together for all eternity. Between the leaf blowing in the wind, and the oak which does not bend but is blown over, we are called to be like supple trees, swaying in the wind of the Holy Spirit but always rooted in truth. (-s 14th Sunday in OT (July 6) Response: I will bless your name for ever, my King and my God. First Reading Zechariah 9:9-10 The prophet foreshadows Jesus' arrival in Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, the humble king, riding on a donkey. Second Reading Romans 8:9. 11-13 Those who belong to Christ are filled with the life-giving Spirit of Christ. Gospel Matthew 11:25-30 True greatness is achieved only through living in humility and littleness. "Come to me, all you who labour and are overburdened, and I will give you rest." Illustration Saturday morning is a perfect time to go parent-spotting in the local park. They are easy to identify. Their children keep them busy and highly visible as they demand help with learning to ride a bike or a scooter, or perhaps to play football. Nobody is more serious than a toddler learning to kick a ball or a three-year-old making the first scary journey on her scooter. Parents are also easily recognised because they are the ones who stand huddled in small groups as their offspring play in a football match against another local school or try to hit a tennis ball with a racket that is too big for small hands. Parents are the ones who retrieve lost balls, rub scraped knees and find a handkerchief for a small and runny nose. Parents are also the people who obey instructions, who carry discarded coats and bottles of juice. A little girl recently informed her father that if he did not hurry up, they would be late and people would think them very rude. Was it her father's or her own preparations that risked them missing a train? Parents are the ones who cut short their conversations with friends because a small child has fallen over or disappeared from sight. Parents are the ones who listen, who come up with good ideas, who teach, hug away hurts, know which bus to catch and never forget important dates such as a child's birthday. Parents are unique and heroic. Gospel Teaching Today's Gospel is one of the best-known, most-quoted and hope-filled passages of scripture. Countless people have found comfort as they have faced difficulties too great for them to handle, or perhaps at the end of a busy day when the idea of resting in God's presence, even if only for a few minutes, has been enough to give a new burst of life and comfort. When Jesus told his listeners that they could come to him, it was at a time when he himself had little time to spare, encountering not only those who loved him, but also those who could not cope with his message and sought ways of silencing him. Jesus was busy, but not too busy to welcome those who were sick and troubled, those regarded as important or considered unimportant, young people and old people. To him, everybody is of value and worth accompanying. That is why he made time for others, regardless of the pressures he faced. Jesus told the crowd that if they were to shoulder his yoke, they would find it "easy": it would fit their shoulders. He did not mean his followers would have a trouble-free life. Jesus himself experienced opposition that would lead to the cross. He promised, however, that, with his support, nobody need find his or her burden too big to carry. That is why today's Gospel has given comfort to so many people. We know we are not alone - and that makes the difference. With Jesus alongside, we are never alone. Application Parenthood is not easy, but it carries its unique joys. There is a sense of fulfilment and happiness when a child comes looking for consolation and reassurance. Even when life seems to be filled with one problem after another, most parents do not wish away their children: they are there for their sons and daughters through thick and thin, giving countless small signs of love. "Great" parents are not those who achieve landmarks in society, but are those who, in simplicity and humility, take one step at a time, accompanying a child from her or his earliest days and through all of the bumps and scrapes along the way. Jesus came among us on a donkey, walked long distances, preached on countless occasions and touched people's hearts in a way that nobody else could have done. Jesus did not boast of being God or of his relationship with the Father and the Holy Spirit. He was not stuffed with false pride, looking for a red carpet wherever he went. A parent does not need to boast of his or her talents and achievements to a child: children already know their own limited capabilities even while acting as though they ruled the world. Jesus was the perfect parent in his attitude towards others, but is there not also something beautiful that we can learn from our mums and dads? What can I learn, from my parents or those of others, about the reality of God's love?
