Našla sem svoj dostop k Bogu, ki me nosi in drži. SLOVENSKA ŠOLA SLOVENIAN SCHOOL Dear parents, September is here and the school doors are open for another year. This means that it will also be time for SLOVENIAN SCHOOL. If you have a child in Senior Kindergarten or older in English school, he/she is eligible to enroll in Slovenian School. Be proud of your culture and heritage! As descendents of our small Slovenian nation, let's make it possible for our children to become acquainted with their ancestral homeland and learn Slovenian. One day they will thank you for having the foresight and the interest in sending them to Slovenian school. We all feel the need to offer our children extra curricular activities in sports, music, dance, etc. Don't you think that it is just as important to offer them the opportunity to broaden intellect by learning the language of their parent or grandparents? We urge you to think about it and send your children to SLOVENIAN SCHOOL! Our programs are easily comprehended. They are geared towards the ability of the children. They are made along the lines of the ones we use in English schools so that they can be easily followed and understood. Our level one program is geared towards children who do not speak any Slovenian. Accordingly, they concentrate on vocabulary building by listening to stories, tapes, videos, games and conversation, etc. - with no formal reading and writing, to prepare them for level 2 where they will be eased into reading and writing in Slovenian only when they are ready for it. Registration for SLOVENIAN SCHOOL is on September 15, at 9:00 A.M. in the classroom behind the upper hall. Although our goal is to teach the children to read, write and speak Slovenian, more importantly, it is to instill on them a Slovenian identity, a feeling of love and pride towards their Slovenian roots and their cultural heritage, which your own parents worked so hard to maintain. Because our Slovenian School is a part of the Slovenian community, it also gives the children a sense of belonging. It is a place where they make lasting friendships. Our children are the guarantee for the continuance of our Slovenian identity. It is important that we work together to keep their interest alive. We, on our part, are striving to make it interesting for them. In the summer of 2000, 2004 and 2008, we organized an excursion of Slovenia for them, to give them the opportunity to see and experience Slovenia, first hand. The excursions were unforgettable for the children, a great success, so we look forward to organizing another one down the road. In turn, dear parents, you must do your part as well! Please give SLOVENIAN SCHOOL your full consideration and register your children on Sept. 15. If you have friends, who are of Slovenian background and this notice does not reach them, please tell them and encourage them to send their children to our school. If you are uncertain about enrolling your children in Slovenian School, please feel free to visit our school and see its set up, observe our classes and talk to the teachers. Be proud that you are Slovenian and give your children the same opportunity! We look forward to seeing you at REGISTRATION on SEPTEMBER 15, from 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 AM Sandy Allen - Principal Slovenian International Language School V nedeljo, 9. septembra 2012 je bilo v hamiltonski katedrali Kristusa kralja srečanje zakoncev iz vse škofije, ki so obhajali 25, 40, 50 60 in več let poroke. Ostali so dobili priznanja v dvorani pod katedralo. Tam je bilo poskrbljeno tudi za prigrizek in pijačo. Kdor pa je želel se je s škofom lahko tudi slikal. Tudi iz naše župnije je bilo več parov. Babič John in Frida, Gonza Štefan in Vera, Magdič Jože in Marija, Pavličič Max in Jožica, Špiler Michael in marija, Antolin Ivan in Angela. Zardi množice nismo uspeli dobiti vseh za skupno sliko, vsaj nekateri pa so se zaustavili pod korom ob kipu Kristusa kralja. Annual Diocesan Wedding Anniversary Mass Year after year, couples celebrating their 25th, 40th, 50th and 60 + Wedding Anniversaries gather at the Cathedral of Christ the King for our traditional Diocesan Wedding Anniversary Mass, an event organized by the Family Ministry Office of the Diocese of Hamilton. This year's celebration, with an all-time high attendance record of more than 80 couples celebrating 60+ years of married life, took place on Sunday, September 9, 2012 at 2:00 pm. During the Mass, Bishop Douglas Crosby, OMI, invited more than 470 couples to hold hands and look into each other's eyes as they renewed their wedding vows. "Today is a reminder and a renewal of the promises made on the day of your wedding many years ago, a reminder of God's love." Bishop Crosby said, as he congratulated the couples for their true commitment to each other which "serves as a witness of everlasting love" Sunday's Readings 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading Isaiah 50:5-9 The Lord comes to the help of the suffering servant. Response: I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living. Second Reading James 2:14-18 Our faith is revealed in our good deeds. Gospel Mark 8:27-35 Peter recognises Jesus as the Christ but misunderstands what this means. Illustration Life rarely turns out to be what we have hoped for or presumed. In the book and film The Constant Gardener, the hero sets out to find out who killed his wife and why. Why did she hide what she was doing from him? Had she been unfaithful? The title comes from the hero's hobby of gardening but is also a metaphor for his obsessive and meticulous pursuit of this goal. However, during his search all his assumptions and expectations are turned upside down. His friends turn out to be his enemies; and his enemies turn out to be his friends. He no longer has any idea whom he can trust but does not allow even this uncertainty to deter him. He finally discovers that his wife has been gunned down ultimately at the behest of his own government, the government for whom he personally works; and, as he uncovers the web of corruption and deceit, he becomes aware that he too will not escape the same fate. He now knows too much, and he too will have to be eliminated. He does not escape this fate, but he does manage 276 | VESTNIK 2012 to expose those who are responsible. His wife is not just exonerated in his eyes. He puts his life on the line for the sake of justice and the greater good, but it is also for the sake of the wife he cannot live without. Gospel Teaching Jesus turns to his disciples with a seemingly innocuous question. When people talk about him, who do they say he is? The disciples give examples from what they have heard. Because of what Jesus has been doing and saying, the people are aware that he has special powers. Their traditions tell them that such powers can only belong to one of the prophets, perhaps even Elijah, who is supposed to return to announce the coming of the Messiah. But what about the disciples themselves? Who do they think he is? It is Peter as usual who jumps in with the reply: "You are the Christ." In Matthew's Gospel, Jesus congratulates Peter for his wisdom, since such knowledge can only come from God. Here, in Mark's account, Jesus immediately counsels his disciples to keep this a secret. His reason is that the popular perception of the Messiah is that of a leader who will free the nation from their subjugation to the Romans. What Jesus has to offer is the way of suffering, rejection and death. Peter shows how accurate Jesus is in his awareness that this new way of looking at the Messiah will be unacceptable. He cannot accept it and remonstrates with Jesus, who in turn rebukes him: "the way you think is not God's way but man's". This is the crucial turning point in Mark's Gospel. Up to this point Jesus has been proclaiming the kingdom in word and deed, healing, performing miracles and casting out evil spirits. From now on Jesus will begin to teach more clearly what the role of the Christ is and also the way of life the followers of Christ must expect. It is not an easy message. It is only because Jesus will take the path of losing his life himself that his disciples will have the courage to follow. Application Many of us still hope to have the consolations of our belief without taking on its full consequences. Time and again you hear of people who have fallen away from God and the Church because they feel God has not answered their prayers. "I prayed so much, and yet my loved one still died." We can understand the feeling of abandonment without accepting the assumption that lies behind it. God guarantees eternal life, not this life, and our only way to that eternal life is through the loss of this life. The following of Christ is not a matter of trying to manipulate God to our way of thinking and comfort. Jesus roundly rebukes Peter for that approach. Following Christ means that we accept losing our life for his sake. How we will lose our life will be different for each one of us. We may lose our friends, our family, our health, our livelihood, even our good name. What we need to pray for is the courage to take the steps asked of us as and when we are called to do so. Only our profound closeness to Christ himself will help us respond generously to this call that lies at the heart of the Gospel. V nedeljo, 9. septembra 2012 je zakrament svetega krsta prejela HOLLY EMILY ARCHER, hči očeta Matthew Archer in matere Emily, rojene Novak. Iskrene čestitke staršema ob krstu tretjega otroka.
