The author deals with the engineer Aleksander Nagy, who served as Mayor of Maribor from 1886 to 1902. After completing the Volksschule in Maribor, Nagy continued with his studies at the Technische Hochschule in Graz and in Vienna. In his contribution, the author reveals how Nagy's knowledge within the profession of construction proved to be of immense help to him later in his life, when he became first a city councillor and then mayor. At the same time, the author emphasizes in the article the facts that helped the City of Maribor under Nagy's governance acquire several new school buildings, a new hospital building, several military facilities, slaughter houses and, last but not least, a new water supply system. Based on the writings of Nagy's contemporaries, with these acquisitions Maribor turned into a true modern city.
