The doctor thesis presents the development of the gripper which is capable of manipulating objects in the micro- or even in the nano-scale. Principle of gripping with ice proved itself as worth of the further investigation. State of the art ice grippers use liquid water as the ice formation media, which makes use of the very sharp tips (apex diameter of couple of 100 nm) and manipulation of the objects under the size of couple of 100 m impossible. Ice gripper developed within this framework uses water vapour under its triple point for the ice formation media, which eliminates the presence of the liquid water. The gripper has proved itself to operate as the variable surface gripper, where the contact area between the tip and the object is varied, what makes the gripping and releasing possible. The developed gripper has shown the capability of manipulating objects down to 840 nm in size. This value still does not present the lower limit where the gripper could be deployed.
