Kakor hitro pride ,do take idrušitve, imajo vsi člani pridružene organizacije iste pravice in dolžnosti kot člani SNPJ. Obiskovalci naj bl vršili svojo nalogo tajno. Tajnost priporočam is rasnih raslogov. A Call to Action To I he Worker« of the United State»: A critical hour in the history of our nation ha* arrived. Three y«ar« have pa«»ed »ince the lfreate«i economic diaaater known to modern time« ha« befallen our people. With the destructive force of a hurricane it ha« blighted million* of home«. More than 12,000,000 wage earner« vainly «earch for work; aev-eral million work but one or two days a week at wage« barely sufficient to keep body and aoul together; Hi the sgricultursl aectiona farm« built through generation« of unremitting toil are being «old at auction; breadline« ara everywhere becoming longer; suffering is becoming more acuta as the meager resources of the rsliof agencies are being wiped out; hundreds of thousands of young people wander homeleas and penniless over the nation, with a life of crime the only alternative to starvstion. Drawn into the depre*«ion by an insane economic order snd the greed of the captains of industry, denied psllef by their politicsl leaders, the time has come when the workers and farmers of the United States, united on a program of constructive relief and sound economic orgsnlsation, must strike out for themwelves. On Saturday and Sunday, May 6 and 7, representative« of farm and labor organisation will a««emble at the National Capital in a new Continental Congress- for Economic Reconstruction. Here we will draw up a program to right the grievous wrongs we hsve suffered, and set up a national council of the people who work for a living to insure its realisation. Your organisation is Invited to send two delegates. Forms and an envelope to lie used in submitting credentials are enclosed. Detailed information concerning the assembling of delegates, apocial railroad rates, and local accommodations, will be mailed to each delegate as soon a« credential« are received. Through vigilance, the strength of a just cause, and the pressure of our democratic mass strength we shall endeavor to win for all men, women and children of this nation a true freedom— freedom from poverty, hunger and economic insecurity, Kmil Rieve, piesident of the American Association of Full Fashioned Hosiery Workers and vice-president of the United Textile Worker« of America, is chairman of the Committee of Corre«pondents for the Continental Congress. We are determined that the flcundering of the Hoover administration shall not be repeated; we are determined that the workers and farmers ahall no longer bear the brunt of the economic breakdown; w« arc determined that the Continental Congreas and the peoples council which it will set up shall be a mighty machinery of pressure which our elected officials and the owners of industry will be forced to heed. "We expect that more than 5,000 repreaentatives of working people of city and farm areas will attend the congress. After due deliberation and action we shall frame a bill of griev-ancea. This bill will be presented to President Roosevelt and to the leaders of the House snd the Senate. It shall become our platform for which we shall strive unceasingly. We shall increase or revise our demands as the needs of the farmers and workers require. "The Continental Congress does not seek to supplant any other organization of labor, farmers, unemployed, or veterans. We have Issued Invitations to organisations whose memberships total over 10,000,000 men and women. All will lie asked to pool their energies for the common cause, while none will be aaked to abandon the spicific functions for which they were created. A preliminary canvas of the field has convinced the signers of the Call that representatives of more than 6,000,000 workers, farmers and unemployed will answer the roll call on May 6th." —The New Lesder. Michael Pies he, slamming our "would-be Columnist" from ^mbridge, Pa., is concerned, we are entirely unsympathetic. It is a pity that the membera should be confused with artificial, destructive and unfriendly ballyhoo ballyhoo whose net result, if it proved effective, could be only the creation of ill-feeling and frfctidn among our members. With all true regards to the gentle art of writing, getting up an "article" and spreading the good word generally, I should think that a full-grown person would use his time,to better advantage than to write up "Banalities." If the "Banalities" columnist aa-pires ever to become a literary light, he should cease his columnist hacking and read Voltaire's "Philosophic Dictionary." Then, only then, would ho attain a degree (though very small degree) of recognition. But, hia case seems to be hopeless, owing to the fact that he lives in the age of tomato juice, yeast cure, and, last but not least, advanced doings of our young people 100 per cent, and still increasing. Joseph Komats, Lodge 713. Tki P. M. A. Tbs Rerik GUcsgo Springfield. III.—I feel that it is Important that some word picture be given In these columns that will show the comparative strength of the P. M. A. and the U. M. W. A., coal miner unions in Illinois, and that is the effort of this article. Since September 1 of last year, the Progressive Miners of America haa been organised. It was started that the miners might rid themselves of John L. Lewis and his outfit. It's a clean union, with all the latest ideas in preventives, against crookery and corruption, in its constitution. It is militant and tries to be "red," in recognising the class struggle, and calling for independent political action and nationalisation of coal mines. The P. M. A. now numbers something over 36,000 men. It has 24,000 of this number, paying duee. All in Illinois. The U. M W. A. has about 6,000 dues paying miners working in Franklin county and 2,000 or so in Vermillion and Williamson counties together, and five per cent of the minors in Peoria area, or several hundred. About 1,200 men work for Iiewis in the Springfield and Taylor-ville areas together, comprising eight shipping mines. In Danville district, whole area is withholding their dues from both unions and I understand they sre about to switch to P. M. A. About 2,000 miners work in Danville s res. Thus, summed up, the P. M. A. ham 36,000 members as against 8,400 members for U. M. W. A. in Illinois. The«e figures am not official, but sre accurate, I believe. In Franklin county, last Lewis stronghold in llllinois, four shipping minca are Progressive, altho now idle. A number of Women's Auxiliary branches of P. M. A. now function in this county, which shows how the people feel toward P. M. A. If It were not for terror, practiced by the thugs of the Pes hod y and other in trrenta, the county would now be sol idly Progressive. You hav« to hand it to those Women's Auxiliaries of P. M. A., tho. If it worn not for them and their efforts, it Is highly doubtful whether the P. M. A. would ham weathered the storm of being able to organiae. Auxiliariee now number omr 60 brsnches with some auxiliaries hav ing mom than 000 members. The youth of tho miners, those In their teens, are also planned to bo orgsnised later. A mal labor edu-rational work la also to be sponsored In fact, it's a real laker movement. President Pcnrey says: "Local unions from Virginia, Pennsylvania and Arkansas ham applied for charters and granting of same is under advls«m«nt. . . Confident P. M. A. will supplant the U. M. W. A. In every coal field la North America within next few yean." I suggest pa titers affiliated with ths U. M. W A. withhold their du««, and thus weaken John I» In his fight with P. M. A. Speed the day of com-plot« organisation? Write te P. M. of A, GilUapie. I III-note, for information.' Help «xtend It« growth late ether states and Can-ada. Joe C. Brtoorer. ^ P. Donations roeehred by Midwest Ptr k Miners Relief Fund front SNPJ will* be acknowledged later. ' W aukegan.—When, about a month ago, Socialiet candidates filed petition» securing their right to run for public office in North Chicago, the intention of the Socialist Party to enter the eleetion campaign waa given a surprising amount of newspaper publicity. The fact that the gocislists were making a reappearance for the first time since the war was disturbing news, it is true, but bowk worthy even to.somewhnt disconcerted editors of the. front page. Naturally the newspapers were anything but sympathetic. The significance of the socialist movement was minimised. Eventually the Socialists might become a factor in city politics, but it would take a long, long time. With a sanctimonious show of sportsmanship the newspapers wished the Socialists well, told them to go ahead. But in two weeks, partly through ignorance, largely through ill will, they were reporting "scandals" among the "local Socialist groups." Hie industrial overlords trf this city, however, were more realistic. Ever since the great steel strike in 1911», except for the periodic outburst« of tho Communists, whoso effect could always be localised by adroit handling of the red herring, the rulers of this city have enjoyed comparative peace and quiet. Now ¿heir peace was being threatened by hi radical movement gnce more raising its head. The newspapers might allay their fears with the speculation that it would be years before the Socialists would become a force in the political life of North Chicago. But they were going to take no chances. The idea was to nip the thing in the bud. From all sides press ure was brought to bear upon the candidates. Several were threatened with the loss of their jobs. One of the candidates was offered a 60% increase in wages, position as foreman, and the opportunity to run later on for office on one of the two opposing parties if he would withdraw from the campaign. Failure to do so would cost him his job. He lost the job. The Socialists expected this; North Chicago is a steel town. The efforts to suppress them was unsuccessful. Nothing daunted, the Socialists did go ahead. In tho current issue of a local paper they were given the front page headlines. John J. Cerk, Socialist candidate for Mayor, had two opponents to debate the issues of tho campaign. An unheard of thing, taking politics seriouslyl (At this writing, the challenge still remains unanswered.) They are holding meet ings weekly, sometimes twice weekly and as the election approaches, 'meetings will be held with greater frequency. The program and platform of the Socialist party has been wide ly distributed. Sociaiiat sentiment 1» growing surprisingly. Already each of the other two parties admit that the Socialists will place second, re serving the first place, of course, for themselves. The Socialist platform contains »even planks. They ara: 1. Municipal ownership of public utilities and of equipment needed for city improvements and services in order to eliminate orofit paid to private contractors. 2.' Immediate clarification of the water works situation in regard to ratea, bond issues, and funds. 3. A planned city budget 4. Non-political positions to bo filled on basis of merit, not by po litical boss patronage. 6.- Fair and equitable adjustment of all city wagos and elimination of percentage system of payment in treaaurer's office. 0. Full consideration for and co operation with the unemployed and their organisations. 7. No curtailment of educational facilities, particularly no shortening of the school term, no reduction in the teaching staff and the library «crviee. These propoaala ara not uniquely socialist. They could be—and have been—the program of any Intelligent "honest government" party. But the preamble makea the platform a sociaiiat document. In it is stated the ultimate goal of the socialist movement: abolition of the capitalist system and establlahing in its place s »vat em under which the means of production would be collectively owned and democratically managed having for its aim service to the many -instead of profit» for the few. A. Pierce. low wnges or long hours and over work? It aeems that as one reads in the papers accounts of a strike that it ia just another Communist plot. That is a very poor excuse. If employees wem paid enough and had decent hours they wouldn't go on a strike even if the Communists wanted thein to.
