Njeno polje so žleze ln njih izloče-vine v telesu človeka ln drugih sesalcev. Vede, ki proučavajo telesne procese, so stare komaj dobrih par sto let, toda v tem času so razrežlle več skrivnosti kakor v vseh prejšnjih dbbah človeštva. Ko pa so ze v najnovejšem času de teknili polja žlez, so znznztvenlkl ta« korekoč našli ključ do nzjvečjlh tajnosti telesa. Na primer, kdo je prej vedel, zakaj človek ra-ste do neke višine ln potem prenehz razti popolnoma? Zakaj zo nekzterl ljudje nenzvzd-no visoki, drugi pa nizki palčki? Zakaj ze redijo ljudje z dispropročnlmi udi ajl celo brez udov? 14«. I have proved it. But I have only in-sUnced venial acts, and now we are confrantod with murder. And the horror of murder drives men sitnost to frenzy, so that they cease to think: they can on1y 1 feel. Murder. Yes, a brutal murder. It comes upon us with a skkening shock. But I said in my first chapter that I propoaed to defend those whom God and man" condemn, ajid to demand justice, for those whom God and man have vrronged. I have to plead for the hettom dog: the~lowest, the most detested, the worst. The tramp has committed a murder. Man urould loathe him, revile him, hang him: God yrould čast hlm into outor darkness. "Not," eries the pious Christian, "if he repent." I make a note of the repentance and pass on. / The tramp has committed a murder. It was a cow-ardly and cruel murder, and the motive was robbery. But I have proved that a man can only be good or bad as heredity and environment cause him to bi good or bad; and I have proved these things because I have te claim that ali punishments and rewards, aH pralsa and blame, arfe undeserved. And now,. let us try this miserable tramp—our -brother. , GUILTY OR NOT GUILTY? The tramp has murdered a child for her money. What is hia defence? I appear for the' prisoner, and clalm that he is not reeponsible for his act. (Cries of shame! bosh! lynch him!) I will first of ali remind the court of the reasons upon whlch I base my clalm. - • , (Gentkman in whito tie rises and declairas vehe-mentiy against tbe immorality of the defence. Talka cxcitedly about the flood gates of anarchy, and tbe bulwarks of society, and is wlth difficulty persuaded to resume his seat.) .Clerkal environment doea not make for toleratlon and ,aweet reasonableness. I proceed to open my čase. ^ Every quality of body or mind Dossessed by a child at birth has been handed down to the child by ita an-ceetors. The child could not select ita ancestors; could not aelect ita own qualiUes of body and mind. Therefore the child is not to blame for any evil quali-ty of body or mind wlth which it is bom. Therefore this tramp was not to blame if, at the moment of blrth, his nature was prone to vlolence or to vlce. The prisoner is a criminal. He Is either a criminal bom, or a criminal made. If he is a "bora criminal" he is a vktim of atovism, and ought not to be blamed, but pitied. For it Is not a"fault, but a misfortune, to be bora an aUvist. Had a tiger kiiled the child, we should have to admit that sueh ia the tiger'a nature; aa it Is the nature of a lark to aing. But, If the prisoner ia an atavUt it is hk nature to be furious and crueL We cannot, however, be sure that a man is a "bora criminal" because he commlts a murder. So great is the power of environmnet for evil, as well as for good, that perhaps the most innocent and humane man in this court might, by the Influence of an evil environment, have been made capable of an act aa borrible. If the proeeoution adopt the courae I expect them to adopt, and clalm that the unfortunato prko ne r "knew better": If they auoceed ln provlng that the prisoner was weH-educatetf, careJLully brought up, and ne ver ln aH hia life wns once exposed to any ovil In-fUience, then I shall clalm that auch evidence prove« the priaoner to bo aitavist, and entltles him to a verdiet of unsound mind. Becauae no man whoee whole environment had been good, would be Capable of murdering a chttd for a fow coppers, unleea he were an atovkt or inaane. On the other hand, if it ahould appear, in the courae of evidenco, that the prisoner was bora of criminal and ignorant parenta, was brought up in an atmosphere of vlolence and crlme, waa aent out, unUugbt, or evllly Uught, and undiscipllned, to acramMe for a lhrlng; if H ahould be proved that he foll into _bad company, that he tumed thkf, that he wa» aent to prkon and branded aa a folon : if it ahould be proved that he haa been hunted by the polke, fkgged with the Mcat" by ward-era, bullled by counael, denouncod by magiatrates and jud*es; If it shonU be proved that he has been treated at every tura of his wretched career as a wild beaat or a pariaih; if k should bc proved that he haa been allowed to dsreneratc into an ignorant, a aavage, a bestlai and a drunken loafer; then, I ahall plead that thk miserable man has been reduced to his preeent moroee, cruel, and immoral stote by evil environment; and I ahall aak for a verdiet in his tovor. " (Cries of Monater! Hang him! LyncJw-him!l It to aald the prisoner la an inbuman monsUr. He has been made a monsUr by a monstrous heredity; or he haa been made a monater by a monstrous engjron-ment. No man of sound heredity ever becomes a monater save by tha setion of sn evil enviromnent. Say the priaoner la aa atavist; s man brad back to the beasto. Then he k entltled to be judged by the standard vre apply to beaata. (To be eontlauod.) : (Continuod from first column.) Socialist believe In private ownership of private property, but they alao demand public ownerahip of pulHc property.
