Edward Pevec at the 25lh anniversary celebration of the Slovenian Chapel in the National Shrine in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, Sept. Jth. There is a beautiful legend about the return of Jesus into heaven after the Ascension. The saints and angels were extremely joyful to see Jesus arid they all hovered around him to offer their welcome. Then one by one they began to notice the wounds in his hands and feet and they became very upset. “O, Jesus! What did they do to you? That’s terrible! How could people be so cruel?” Our Lord merely hushed them and said, “It was all New Subscription Campaign “Go Like 60 To Be One of 60” Our famous Anor nous Donor has struck aga. ! I’ve left them my word and my body and blood so they could be saved.” “But Lord, will they listen to your word and will they receive your body and blood?” “Yes, I think they will. I’ve left behind some wonderful men like Peter, James, and John. They’ll continue my work and others will come after them to do the same.” “But Lord, why are you so sure that your work will go on?” “My mother will take care of that,” Jesus said with a smile. “So, don’t worry. She’ll help as she always has.” She’ll help as she always has. Were not a part of that legend, but we feel so confident that Mary will help as she always has. Marija pomagaj. To most of us, if not to all, these two words mean so much. Our blessed Mother is very much a part of our life and our reliance on her is unquestionable. and to the faith that is so much a part of that heritage Mary is almost as natural as breathing. There was not a time in my life when the “Hail Mary” was- not a part of my daily prayer. I remember so vividly Miss Petkovšek, my fourth grade teacher, now a Poor Clare Sister known as Sister St. Augustine of Jesus, teaching us to pray three Hail Mary’s every night for the special gift of purity. To this day, three Hail Mary’s are a part of my daily prayer. I remember serving benediction on Thursday evenings at St. Vitus church, and as we vested in the sacristy, I could hear the prayerful ladies of the Altar Society droning the Rosary in Slovenian before devotions began. I remember the singing of the Litany of our Blessed Mother on special feast days, and the words and melodies of so many of the Marian hymns are still so vivid in my mind. I was always impressed by how special the months of May and October were in our parish. The May Altar the May devotions, the Litany the Rosary, were always a part of my youth and a part of my priesthood. In the spring of 1974 I recall escorting our junior class at Borromeo Seminary to Washington. We stayed in (Continued on page 3) To our Slovenian heritage Siewioreks celebrate birthdays Lena M. The couple celebrated 59 years of wedded bliss on Aug. 21. They were married at St. Joseph Church in Jefferson, Ohio. The hard-working couple are well-known in the St. Vitus - St. Clair area where they give of their time and talents for the betterment of the community and church. Congratulations, Frank and Lena; thanks to you the world is a much better place. AMERIŠKA DOMOVINA, SEPTEMBER 12, 1996 2 American Slovenian Club of So. Fla. About 24 years ago, Polly and Ferd Klobučar encouraged Ann Stanonik and others, to take action to form a Slovenian Club in South Florida. All three of the above are deceased. Polly recently died in Texas. We owe them a debt of gratitude. On July 1, 1996, William Pene reached his 90t*1 birthday. Ten days later, he died in Waukegan, IL. His wife, Mary, is in extremely poor health. Those of us who knew these former members, can reminisce about happy occasions. Good times shared are not forgotten. It is only the now that counts. Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow never arrives. Life is not a dress rehearsal. With that thought, members enthusiastically greeted each other following summer recess. Pot luck on the menu, brought an assortment of excellent entrees and desserts. September birthday celebrants are Paula Beavers, Amelia Bogus, Mary Grilc and Angela Monohan. Marie and Ed Squirlock celebrated their 50^ wedding anniversary in August. Congratulations and best wishes. For those who didn’t catch the color photos and interesting write-up Mary Grilc received in the Sun Sentinel on the 40th anniversary of her surviving the sinking of the Andrea Doria, Bill Zupanc brought in a copy for them to read. Guests were Bob Petrick and his mother, Mary Petrick, Betty Carringan, Maria Kupchek, and Sam. Bob Petrick entertained with true professionalism on the piano. Reports are that Sam and his tambourine and dancing feet added life to the party. Music was provided by Dr. Machacek, Ed Squirlock and Emil Podracky. Our condolences are extended to Elbe Slak Meuser on the death of her brother. The summer Olympics provided plenty of opportunity for interesting TV watching and the political conventions to a lesser extent. However, hurricane season is upon us and residents do pay heed to the weather forecasts and reports from the hurricane center. 1992’s devastation by Hurricane Andrew is still fresh in our minds. Twenty-five years ago, our nation was still fighting in Vietnam, earthquakes and tornadoes ravaged our country, Apollo 14 spent 33 hours on the moon, busing was proposed as a solution to school segregation, and the news featured such unwholesome names as Man-son, Corona, and Attica. Twenty-five years ago, on September 8, 1971, in this city of Washington, the $70,000,000 Kennedy Center opened as the new culture center and featured Leonard Bernstein’s Mass. Twenty-four days before, here, in our capital’s National Shrine, with much less fanfare and certainly far less expense, this chapel of our Lady of Brezje, the patroness of Slovenia, was dedicated. On that August 15fb inspiring words, moving hymns, and fervent prayers marked this humble but momentous occasion. Now, 25 years later, we stand proudly within these walls, still listening, still singing, and still praying. The words of Jesus in that legend are true: Mary always helps us.
