Ljuba mladosti Sanje mladih let nam ostanejo v trajnem spominu! L. Bizjak ln veliko drugih. Odbor bo serviral dober prigrizek in pijačo. Vstopnina je samo 50c. Brat Reber-šnlk )e dal brezplačno na razpolago zgornjo ln spodnjo dvorano. Hvala, John! F. A. The record« show that a total of 2M juveniles, 212 new adults, and 69 transfers from the Juvenile Department, altogether 574 members, were added.to the ranks of the Society. We are now certain that the SNPJ will number over 50,000 adults and 20,000 juveniles before the end of this month for the first time in its history. ■ The grand total for the first three months of the Lodge Campaign is 1653 members or an average enrollment of 551 per month. The closing month oi this drive is expected to boost the figure well over the 600 mark. The best previous average of 508 was established in the 20th Anniversary Campaign which was concluded in March, last year. More than half of all the lodges in the Society are now listed as active in the campaign. Class "A" lodges have the best record in this respect with 48 of its 50 lodges participating. Claas "B" is next with 85 lodges out of a possible 109 credited with new members, while all the rest are of course, in Class "C." At least 34 lodges are known to have reached or surpassed their respective quotas and have, therefore, earned themselves a place on the Campaign Honor Roll as well as a Certificate of Award. Twenty-six of these are Class "C" lodges, seven are Class "B," and only two are of the Class "A" group. Indications are that this number will be greatly increased when the final report of the campaign is published The contest in Class "A" for first and second place honors and the cash awards of $100 and $75, respectively, continue to sizzle as the lead shifts between the two Strabane, Pa. lodges, 589 and 138. The English-Speaking ¿odie (589) has once more forged to the front, but the margin of difference at this writing is almost negligible. The standing is 48 members to 46. While the competition here is very keen, it is maintained on the friendliest of terms at all times. The final winner is certainly very-much in doubt Likewise, the contest in this class for third place honors and the 150 cash prize is very interesting and undecided. Any one of at least ten different lodges is in good position to win. It would not be very surprising should one of the lodges, now listed far down in the standings, finish third or higher. The possibilities of this happening are extremely bright. Another vary exciting contest is taking place in Class»"B; with the ultimate winners as doubtful, if not more so, as those m Class A. Three members behind third place is the Cleveland aar*nor.e v™» Lodge 604 De Pue Lodge 50 in fifth place and Ambridge Lodge 699 £&m> in sixth are also in the running With a mUe extra push in Hosing weks these and other lodges stand a good chant* of closing the b^weeiT themselves and the present leaders ^ ffifiRJ^ me of the three attractive special prizes offered by the Society, us done before; it can be done once more. top of th heap in Class "C," still nursing a very oomfortaWe and t safe lead, is Lodge 725, Latrobe. Hall in Slickville. Sunday. June 15, so here is a last minute reminder. Remember now, the music will be furnished by Frank's Trio and 1 know that's enough for anyone who has ever danced or heard his fine orchestra. Frank's Trio is rated by nrany as the best Slovene orchestra in our section of the state and I'm sure you will all agree once you've heard him. At our Slovene dances, it doesn't take long for everyone to get ac quainted in the happy, friendly atmosphere and before very long-there isn't a stranger in the place. We are inviting all our friend«, young and old, married and single, near and far to drive out to Slickville for an evening of fun and dancing. ; Food and plenty of beverages will be served that I'm sure will satisfy your thirst after dancing the "good old Slovene polkas." Frank's Trio will play some of the "snappiest" polkas your ears have ever feasted on and beautiful smooth waltzes. His popular music is smooth and dreamy and others are plenty jivey. What more can you ask for an en-oyable evening! Dancing will be from 8:30 to? Slickville h«s patronized all neighboring Slovene dances, so all we ask now is a return viaU and I'm sure you'll never regret it. See you all at the dance. MARY A. REPOS, 379. To cele-brate, they have planned a very eleborate program, published last week In Ihe Prosveta This Is a very active Juvenllc Circle, and to my knowledge, meets oftener than any Circle organised so far. Perhaps it may not seeth necessary to some Circle managers to meet as often with their Juve niles as we do, twice each week but we find it holds interest better and gains more members. I don't believe that you can walk in our locality during the day and not meet a youngster who is dis playing the NNPJ emblem or the Circle's mush ball caps and jerseys They are all so proud of their Clr rle and the SNPJ and we can be sure that the majority of these chll dren have, and will, grow up to be good, faithful, adult SNPJers. It was held at the Center. Milan Medvesek presided, while Angeline Zuitz took notes of the proceedings. Louis Zor-ko was re-electer secretary. The purpose of this organization is to unite our various groups on the educational fields. We want to disseminate the kind of literature, music and information which would give our common people the proper perspective in life and get them to act in unison for all things whieh would benefit labor and the common man. We are definitely for labor unions and for a realignment of thq forces which will make for change in the social order and which will give to the common man a better livelihood. A report of the SANS convention was made at this conference in addition to reports of activities of our numerous groups. The exchange of this information by the various affiliates is beneficial and will enable us to accomplish much more than it could be possible without such sessions. The Congress has decided to consider the entire world as its sphere of influence and bypass the United Nations. Another * movement is on foot to discontinue the U. S. Postal Savings System. All of you know that the post office takes in savings up to $2500 for each individual. They hnve been paying 2% interest on the money throughout these many years. No one has ever lost a penny in these savings. Big business interests and those who support the ideas of big business are now endeavoring to eliminate the Postal Savings System. What they should really do is to increase the amounts people can place into this postal savings system but it looks like the big boys don't care to help the little common man and to give him an opportunity to keep his savings in a secure place. Even the U.£. Savings and Loan League, which apeaks for several thousand savings and loan associations througout the country, adopted a resolution to discontinue this Postal Savings System. And. we tre proud to say that the Jugoslav Savings and Loan Association has sent a protest to the League officers on the enactment of that resolution. • « • Within the past few weeks we heard from William and Mary Dedic who were spending their vacation Ih far off Renton. Mr. Ncaring has been in the forefront of labor writing for many years and he is known to be ever on the side of the common man. Our paper is carrying more of the progressive labor writings these days and the young people are requested to utilize these to advantage. With the entire world struggling to bring about a more just and equitable social order, our young people should be informed and ready to step on the side of progress and promote the coming of the era of the comm6n man.—All who can attend a Town Hall Meeting on Wednesday. The meeting is called by the Chicago Action Council which is supporting the theories of Henry Wallace. IN FACJ, issued by George Seldes. makes a big story out of the fact that 73% of the people of this country fear another war. They don't want sueh a war but because they are inactive or because they do not belong to an organization which is fighting for progress, they do not count. It is pitiful that the country cannot mobilize its forces for peace as it is able to mobilize for war. That's one of the weaknesses inherent in our democracy. If you are one of those 73% who fear another war, then you ought to join the ranks of the progressive element and help us promote a true and just peace. Until the mass of people awakens to the need for participating and for supporting progressive organizations, the few who profit by war will involve as in another catastrophe again. Not that the children don't enjoy this sort of activity, but the blackface makeup necessary for this show did make things a little tough for all eppcemed. Under the head of legislation, the committee urged that the migrants be given the protection of workmen's compensation, child labor, social security snd minimum wage laws; that labor camps be regulated, and that school attendance be required. These and other steps are necessary, the committee contended, to prevent recurrence of the scandalous conditions that prevailed among the "Okies" in the 1930's and which were so graphically described in John Steinbeck's "Grapes of Wrath." —Labor. The evidence against the men was damning. In signed confessions, all but two admitted belonging to the murder-bent mbb that grabbed Earle from the Pickens County jail last Feb. 17. But the all-white jury chose to ignore the evidence, the absence of any kind of defense, and the judge's warning that "under your oaths as jurors you are not to allow anw so-called racial issue to enter into your deliberations." The jury returned a verdict of "not guilty"—a verdict that set off widespread rejoicing in the town of Greenville. Prosecutor Sam Watt had cautioned the men in the jury box that their failure to measure up to their responsibility as the "public conscience" of the South would be an "even more horrible crime" than the actual lynching. But prejudice triumphed over justice—nad the people of Greenville applauded. Intolerance, long festering beneath the surface in Greenville, was in open and sordid display in the coarse merry-making that swept the court-room and the town when the verdict was annouced. However, while the jubilant statements of the Negro-hating defendants made the headlines, the echoes of couragous words spoken during the trial by decent, freedom-loving men rang loud and clear, and offered some hope, however faint, that new forces in the South might yet forge to the top. "A court of law recognizes no color, no creed." Judge J. Robert Martin had declared in a stirring plea for justice. Judge Martin conducted the trial with scrupulous fairness and tried valiantly to prevent the defense counsel from inflaming the jurors' prejudices. The judge was faithful to his duty—as were Gov. J. Strom Thurmond. who ordered the sate constabulary to Greenville after the local police showed no interest in apprehending Earle's killers, and Prosecutor Watt, who made a determined effor to obtain a convicion. But these men—all of them young—were outsiders. The real heroes of the case wre the handful of Greenville citizens who dared challenge the unjust tradition which dictates that no whie man shall be convicted for a Negro's death. Not since slavery days has a white man been sentenced to die for an offense against a Negro in South Carolina. A Greenville grand jurv indicted the accused lynchers. The local press, civic groups, and clergymen demanded the prosecuion of the guilty. A few townspeople testified against the defendants, telling their «tories without evasiveness. One of these key witnesses was severely beaten by local thugs a fw nights after he appeared on the stand. In the fact that a few people in Greenville wanted justice, there wss hope. Throughout the South, consciences were being pricked by the Greenville verdict. The New Orleans Times-Picayune said the decision "must shock every law-abiding citizen in the South." Common folks everywhere began thinking about the need for strong Federal legislation which would protect the civil rights of every American. Another lynching was attempted in North Carolina the day after Willie Earle's accused kilUnres were freed in South Carolina. The report of this new atrocity convinced md-ny Northeners and Southencrs alike that the time had come for Congress to approve a Federal unti-lynching law. Frankfurter Jackson, and Rutledge dissented from the majority's opinion. Jus. tice Murphy warned that the principles established in the cas^ might be used "by some future government determined to suppiess political opposition under the guise of sedition ... It takes no stretch of the imagination to picture law enforcement officers arresting those accused of believing, writing, or speaking that which is proscribed accompanied by a thorough ransacking of their homes as an "inci-dent" to the arrest in an effort to uncover "anything" of a seditious nature." Squalls Ahead The signs of approaching economic squalls are turning up with disturbing frequency nowadays. Nobody who keeps his eyes glued to the economic weather ghart expects a major crisis in the months ahead, but most observers who are not afraid to look facts In the face are not quite ao sure as they were a few months ago that we can ride out the next 12 months without a storm.
