Liberalni ésbavsiki is gosis proti sovjsto« j rr' Podali so izjavo, v kateri obsojajo križarsko vojno proti Rusiji New York. — (F. Federacija Živimo v dobi. ko se sorodne organizacije zbližujejo. Gospodarske, industrijske, politične, kulturne, strokovne in verske organizacije vseh barv, ki imajo skupne potrebe, prihsjajo skupaj za skupne akcije. V tem Je moč In napredek. -Kdo more utajiti to preobrazbo? Zena postaja v erotiki samostojnejša, pametnejša in aktivnejša, svobodnejša z vsakim dnem. Morda bo s to jastnostjo izgubljenega nekaj, kar so prejšnji rodovi ljubili v erotiki: napetost skrivnostnega in nevarnega. Eraser, Mrs. Prances Buell Olson, Mrs. Frances Bums and a group of other fraternal leaders have caught the vision of what Youth means to the fraternal benefit system—they hav« seen the "handwriting on the wall." It is what Youith has to offer to the fraternailsts— it is what the frateraaiiats have to offer to Youth. Iioes Youth want to take up fraternalism and carry it on with a spirit of intensive, co-operative develoo-ment that the pioneers of fraternalism never dreamed of? Will Youth take sueh a devoted interest? Youth is weighing Fraternalism in the scales of Life's possibilities, now. If it is found wanting, if Youth discards it—well, fraternaliem will be but a worn-out stone upon which civilisation cHmbed a little way and then discarded for a firmer and more dependable foothold. For the past three years or more these fraternal loaders have tried to impress upon their brothers and aiaters the need of doing something to increase the Interest of Youth In the fraternal benefit system. Their work haa not been entirely in vain. Much progress has been made here and there. Yet, as a whole, the elder have set hack 1b ths meeting places and, although listening attentively and politely, have thereafter gone shoot the business of writiag life insuraaoe in about the same routine way as wa« the procedure of a past generation. First among those to appreciate the value of Youth in their organisations have been the foreign-speaking societies. Borne of these are writing Juveniles by the thousand a month where their English-speaking brothers have not even established Juvenile departments. Thee« Societies early realised that the children of foreign bora would speak the language of this coantry—the language they hear every day, outside of their home. They realised that these aame ehildren would not be interested ia joining a Society where another language Is used exclusively, so they organised the chlldrei* along American 11 see. Today, In many of the adult lodges of these foreign-epeaklng societies It Is necessary to give the ritual and business in both the nativ« tongue and in English. Why? Be-i sum these youngsters have grown up, som« of them taken husbands or wives who speak English only. The whole family has joined the Society. They aiw In* tereeted In what Is going on. Therefore, th« lodge must be conducted In a common tongu«, which is English. Time will show that one of the greateat steps that has been taken by the fraternal benefit system in years was the recognition of the appeal of the Juveniles at Rochester, N. Y., and awarding them a place in th« proceedings of the Presidents' Section at Chicago last month. This Is splendid, but It Is just a beginning. Supervised play Is a wholeeome thing in infancy, but It loses Its effect in boyhood it becom«« toe obvious. —Fraternal Monitor. Attention, Ambridge! Few observations are so directly convincing of the close kinship of nun snd the snthropoid ape as a critical comparison of the skeletons. It was a very happy idea of the English genius Thomas Huxley to place pictures of the skeletons of man and the four surviving anthropoid apes on the front page of his "Man'» Place in Nature." I copied the pictures in my "Anthropogeny." Later in my published addresses delivered in Berlin on the war about the idea of evolution, I used pictures of the same five skeletons, but from specimens in my own collection. I purposely choose a younger chimpanzee and orang outang, because their similarity to man is more striking than that of older apes. The skeletons were photographed by my tried collaborator, Mr. Adolph Giltsch, and neither he nor I made any change whatsoever in their form or position. Now what does Dr. Brass say about these clear, absolutely faithful photographs? He indulges in the following untruths—for the greater glory of God! "These tables show intentional falsifications to uphold the false caption (Skeletons of the five Anthropoid Apes). The uprightness of man's carriage is concealed. The gorilla's knee has been pressed to make it appear to be standing straight. The walking posture of all the apes is false. . . . This table .is an example of how Haeekel misuses the works of other people." Still more absurd is a criticism of Dr. Brans of tables I intend to give a museum. They are not yet made, the plan for them has not yet even been prepared. But that does not deter Dr. Brass from dishing up the following to his credulous readers: "I have seen some of the tables which are to serve as object lessons in the museum, and they make me feel ashamed for Haeekel and his friends." We all know how tender tfie ape mother is of her young. Yet Brass teaches us that it is exactly the "selfless mother-love and mother-care that clearly distinguish man from all mammals and removes him far above the impulses and instincts of a beaat." Dr. Brass also denies the existence of superfluous rudimentary organs. By that surprising decrec he expunges an entire chapter from zoology and botany, one of the most interesting chapters of the whole of biology. / Another strange statement of his 4s, "The cells of the human tissue differ conspicuously from those of other mammals." Now every histologist, every student, every physician who has examined microscopically the human tissue and the tissue of other mammals knows that their coarser and finer structure, the morphologic and physiologic characteristics of their cells are exactly the same. In sixty years, ever since thou-sands of accurate observations have been made of the structure of the epithelium, the glands, the cartilage, the bones, the plain and striated muscles no one has succeeded in finding any histologic differences between man and the other animals. The same is true of the egg csfll. Dr. Brass says the human egg cell is different from the ape's egg cell. He ia the only one who has discovered that it is! My Embryo Pictures. In the earliest stages the resemblance of the outer form and inner structure of the embryos of the amniota, that is, of mammals, reptiles, and birds, are surprisingly alike. The most expert-enced specialists are not able to distinguish the young embryo of animals that later are so conspicuously different as man and ape, dog and rabbit, bird and squirrel. . In this experiential fact of comparative embryology I see important proof of the theory of evolution. In many of my works I placed in juxtaposition a number of various embryos of amniota in three 'stages of development. I intentionally omitted unessential features from the representations, in 'order that the essential features should come out all the more clearly. It is these "echematlzationa" that have furnished Brass and his Keplerists with the best points at which to aim their calumnies. Others did not "approve" them either, although the right to use schematized reproductions, especially in illustrating difficult form relations, is generally recognized in text books and popular works. In charging me with falsification they themselves falsified in the most brazen way. According to their allegations I maintained that the embryos I had compared are absolutely identical. All I had said is that their similarity is so great as to be confusing and deceptive. Neither I nor any scientist ever made the senseless statement that the embryos of men and apes, dogs and rabbits are at any stage of development identical. The very fact that they evolve into'different things refutes such a thesis. Even in the simple, spherical germ-cell chemical differences In the molecular composition of the plasma may be assumed with certainty, though the limited means at our command prevent us from proving that they exist. The Sandal ion of Vertebrate«. The sandalion or aandal-germ ia one of the most interesting natural forms. It Is that important germ form of the embryo of the higher vertObrates or amniota which ha. the simple shape of a sandal or sole of a shoe. It is a thin, somewhat elliptical body, narrower in the middle and rounded and broader at the ends (Figs. A, B. C). It is an early stage of the embryo, at which nothing of the later characteristic form ie to be discerned. None of the separate parts of the body are visible. Even vertctoration has not yet become apparent. There is s very slight variation in iU shape among the different amniota, especially in the relation of the length to the breadth and the rounding of the two halves. But it* composition, or internal structure from a few *impl'-primitive organs is the seme in all amniota. The Hainan SandaNon Fig.. B and C repreeent the only two specimens of the human sandalion in its earliest stages of which we are certain that they have been completely observed. They are copied from the handsome "Handatbs dor Entwickelungegeschichte de* Menachen." by Julius Kollnmn. The books show no trial balance closed for three months. 2) That the suditors have never msde out our orifinal report for the states. The report was made by oarselves and the suditors were asked to straighten the previous Incorrect figures msde by the one who was in charge of the report for 1928, and for which the New York insurance department hss inquired. S) That ex-1 tra help was hired for copying reports before I became secretary. 4) That he never ssked the Sapreme board of the SNPJ or me for $40 weekly salary. Bro. Krsmsrsic's letter, in which he asked for Increase, is still on our files, snd in that letter no mention is msde aa to how maeh he wanted. When he asked for an in- J crease, the Supreme board increased hi* salary $2 per week. In regard to my remarks before him, I would like to have sufficient; proof for them, bocause I have never made any such statement lie accused me of. When he told me that he is going to resign, I admit that I never begged him to remain. Management! Ability! Bro. Kramarsic has a good chancc to show his ability right now while he is his own boss, business man. I can prove by the records on hand that the management under the supervision of those whom he glorifies was not much inclined for the interest of the SNPJ and economy. If there was anything in my statement before the Supreme board to make myself hero at his expense, let the members judge.1 About extra help? Yes; we have one in our office and I have no res. son to be afraid to admit that. The reason for having one is, because the SNPJ in the last 14 months hs's increased in membership almost 3000. To Bro. Kramaraic's remark that it is not the purpose of his article to discredit anyone, I want to say that only a mentally blind person can believe such a statement. . Fred A. Vlder, Supreme Secretary. How much the outside affiliations had to do with the propsganda aginst me, while I was Secretory, 1 am sure he knows it through his affiliations which are responsible for it. By all hard work and propaganda, some well known change in the S. B. has been accomplished, but not tQ suit him and his associates, and this in my opinion was one of the main reasons for his resignation, regardless how often Bro. Kramarsic states it was the insufficient raise of salary alone. Bias Novak. Member Lodge No. 1. THE VALUE OF A BOOKKEEPER Chicsgo.—Bro. August Kramarsic is criticizing the Supreme Board for allotting the new bookkeeper the salary he was receiving as an old employe in the offices of the SNPJ. In critics of his kind there are usually wrapped some twisters to draw, to make the arguments stronger. At this moment I want to touch • nly one twister, which ii directed to me personally. Bro. Krsmaraic says: "At the time I asked for a raise, Bro. Novak sis ted that I wasn't worth $38, ••«t at the last meeting of the Su-heme board it was he who moved to approve a aalarv of $38 for a begin-mr." Where does he get that stuff? The minute« do not show anay such statement of mine, snd he was not present "t the meeting. Nobody can honestly «'«im that I ever stated at the meet-lr>g or otherwise, that he was not worth $38 or of snyone else not being »■>nh what he or she is getting or > a*ked for, but when a question » raise comes up, the Supreme '"aid ia itound to consider the wages and Mils l ie« under general conditions. The fset is that I raised a question that time but did not even vote »•ta.nat the raise of his salary as I" rx>v«d by Bro. Vlder. I am Inclined !<> believe that Bro. Kramarsic has ' " wrongly tipped by someone who not understand the discussion on !; • subject, or purposly made up the »Ury f«r v>me reason. Kro. Bro. Pleshe has been with us again with another irrational outburst of his temper against higher education, the educated ones and tolcrance while in his article he entirely forgot to discuss the facts in the athletic issuo which he professed to discuss. "Practise what you preach" is a proverb which is as old as our civilization, and I can quote hundreds of instances where he has not followed this golden rule. At the ninth regular convention, he recommended to the convention to reprimand my con. duct as a former supreme officer which occurred in a certain controversy between the supreme officers and myself before the insurance commissioner of the State of Illinois, although he admitted on the floor of the convention that he never read aH the correspondence in this mstter. That's the kind of justice and tolerance that he believes in—convict a person, especially if you personally dislike him, without considering one fact in the controversy. Isn't it a fact that Bro. Pleshe was present at the January session of the Supreme board meeting? If he believes in tolerance as he claims he does, why did he vote in favor of the motion mads by Bro. Lokar not to print in the official organ of Prosveta any statements or discussions made by the various supreme officers on the athletic issue? Isn't it a fsct that the members are entitled to know what the supreme officers are doing? Isn't the first act of tolerance in a fraternal society that the supreme officers publish a truthful report of what has been said and done at a supreme board meeting? Now if .Bro... Pleshe believes so much in tolerance, why didn't he discuss in his article the facts "pro" or "con" pertaining to athletics instead of only attacking me personally? I know Bro. Pleshe and I can accurately state that his bigotry on these matters is so pronounced thst he could not give an unbiased decision even if he wanted to. Richard J. Zavertnik. Member Ixxige 632. In his article our crttlc turns to he a rather distinguished authority on athletics, airing out matters which he deemed beneficial to himself, but what about our affairs? Why doea not our critic discloie tbe other side of the story concerning our baseball team ever incessantly looking for arguments which are very unsubstantial, just as the foundation of his tumbled castles. I advise our friend to rebuild the structure using more sincerity and then perhaps it may stand the wear. Any dealings such as the trip to Cleveland are open and frank and no one person is to blame for the mismansjement of the trip. The White Star Lines refunded enough money to cover up their mistake and for that reason $88.00 was all they received. The spirit shown by our critic in Cleveland is very incredible and there are no reasons for argn ments in the paper. John F. Kutch. President Ladje 680. Calumet Sentinels So. Chicago.—"Something attempted; something done, has earned the night's repose."—It seema us if I've just got to get this article written to-night or I won't be able to sleep a wink. My conscience has been both ering me ever since I vflm reappointed on the publicity committee. So tonight, I've come to the conclusion thut I might just as well clear my ctnscience of this heavy load that has been troubling me ever since the first part of the year, and then, only thin will I feel as though "Something's been attempted; some thing done, Has earned the night's repose." So far these our meetings have been very interesting and well at tended. It seems as if (hey are getting better and better. Keep your good work up, officers and members. The auditing committee will have to mske their rounds soon or watch out for the president. He might have one of his famous lectures prepared. I don't think it will be quite so harsh ae the last one becuuse his wife is on the committee, but "a word to the wise is efficient." The entertaining committee is going to give us a big surprise one of these days. That is the reason they are all so quiet lately. "Watch out and be prepared for the surprise," Is my motto. Something is "awhirl" In the air again. We all hope' it settles down soon because it has been "awhirling" long enough. They say it isn't s good policy to keep It "awhirling" too long. Am still counting on that. Publicity Committee. tl BADGER LODGE Canonsburg, Pa.—Upon rsading tbe March 6 issue of the Prosveta the readers of these columns again discovered that our broken-down Napoleon is raving from his seat, receiving a great consolation through his attempts to convey wrong impressions of his successors to the readers from other localities. Those of us whom our critic attacks, can offer nothing but sympahy to this "has been" whose soul Is being gnawed away by the torturing pangs of jealousy, envy and hatred, which he incessantly discloses In Ms controversial arguments, which are unstib-stsntiated. Such is the routine for one who has revealed his biased ae-J, tions in dealing with a group of youth-( ful people that were underertlmsted. • Our critic is now well aware that heneet, able and fearless memlrers are demanded to serve our best interests, and not of 1028 and 102»? Because our friend knows that it would spell something unpieassnt for him. He states, "I am positive that athletics are a benefit to any lodge composed of younjr people, but there are also officers of s lodge who can make athletics lie a hind ranee to them," etc. That statement is made due to his own experiences. Why did not our critic state his "successful" attempt to bsat our lodge out of a bell field last season, which proved as futile as anything attempted, save the fact that our rental charge was increased, for which our critic lakes ¿»redit? Why not mention the irreg ularities of I92S which oor cri'.lc knows a lot about, being at that time chairman of Sport« Com. and also president of our lodge.
