More than 1,000 polka fans and cultural enthusiasts entered the Civic Center that day to be treated with 12 hours of fun, music and plain fellowship. The Foundation was organized with the goal to preserve, encourage and promote the achievements of the Slovenian polka culture by establishing the Cleveland Style Polka Hall of Fame. The Polkathon was a means of raising necessary funds needed for the continued growth and expansion of the Polka Hall of Fame. This first Polkathon raised over $10,000 in a 12 hour period. “Thank you’s” are expressed to radio station WELW, 1330 AM for its remote programming of this event, with special appreciation to station manager Barbara Sullivan and engineer Bob Myers for his expertise in bringing the Polkathon to your home through the magic of radio for some six hours. Co-emcees “on the air” included Tony Petkovšek, Eddy, Denny, and Dale Bucar, Alice Kuhar and Joey Tomsick. Special note of appreciation to the American Home for their promotion and advertising of this event. Continuous performances by the following button , box groups provided entertainment for the area outside the Polka Hall of Fame: Holmes Hall Buttonaires, Northern Ohio Players, West Park, Euclid Squeezeboxers, Fair-port Ensemble, Cleveland-Lake Erie, Buttons & Bows, Maple Heights, Kathy Hlad & Friends, and Kusar’s Button Box Gang - all doing a super job. Simultaneous performances were taking place in the main stage area by the following polka bands: Jeff Pecon, Eddie Rodick, Tony Klepec (Girard, O.), Al Markič, Dave Wretschko, Brian Papesh, Joey Tomsick, Fred Kuhar, No Paper May 12 The English section of the Friday, May 12 edition of the American Home will be included in the Tuesday, May 9 issue. Due to a short weekend commitment of the publisher, there will be no paper published on Friday, May 12. Bob Bilicic, Bob Kravos, and the famous “show stoppers--Zeke & Charlie Vrtovsnik and Friends. The button box groups and bands provided almost 150 musicians throughout the day, while guests danced, sang, or just sat and listened! Guest appearances included Youngstown area radio DJ and bandleader Joe Fedor-chak, along with Ernie Zolka, Art Perko and Lou Trebar. New membership of approximately 100 brought the total to over 600 members, all able to nominate and vote for the 1989 Awards program, taking place in November. The event was partially underwritten by Avia Wines who donated a substantial amount of their products for wine sampling. After a $5.00 admission charge, guests were given $2.00 in tickets to sample the seven varieties of wines that were displayed. Coca-Cola was also there with their newest models of Coke dispensing machines, adding to the interest of those in attendance. All volunteers who gave freely of their time in the entrance, kitchen, refreshment, special events, stages, membership, Hall of Fame, and telethon areas are to be commended for their willingness to share their expertise throughout the day. Whether you listened on the radio or danced on stage, this was a real “Community Event!” Let’s do it again next year! Update on Dr. John Nielsen The following report was issued to the American Home newspaper on Wednesday concerning Dr. John P. Nielsen of New York City, the generous benefactor of our monthly “Cultural Page.” The information was called in by attorney Debbie Sesek, Dr. Nielsen’s niece. Dr. Nielsen is still hospitalized in New York in very serious condition in the intensive care unit. So far tests have not diagnosed the problem. Medically his heart, lungs, etc. are very stable. Although his family stresses he is given the very best medical attention the hospital can offer, they urge readers to keep him in your prayers. AMERIŠKA DOMOVINA, MAY 5, 1989 2 Viki Ašič Ensemble of Slovenia To Make Several Appearances Food for thought... What’s New on St. Clair? In the last few years, appearances by musical ensembles from Slovenia in the Cleveland area have become more and more infrequent. Next week, however, marks a break in this pattern. Currently on tour through Canada is the Viki Ašič Ensemble, which will make several guest appearances in the Greater Cleveland area next week, under the local sponsorship of the United Slovenian Society. The tour itself was organized by the Slovenska izseljenska matica (Slovene Emigrants Society) of Ljubljana, but the Cleveland appearances are being organized by the U.S.S. The Ašič Ensemble will arrive in Cleveland on May 10 and will tour the Cleveland Polka Hall of Fame in Euclid and appear on Tony Petkovsek’s radio program. On Thursday, May 11, there will be a concert at the West Park Slovenian Home, 4583 W. 130 St., at which the West Park Button Box Club will also be featured. The performance will begin at 7:30 by Vince Gostilna The St. Clair community has another new food enterprise, “Doughlicious Donuts” in the former Božeglav Winery building at 6010 St. Clair. The coffee and doughnut shop is operating under the ownership of Mr. Frank Bergant who has Slovenian family roots in our area. It is really amazing that our neighborhood boasts of an allnations line-up of ethnic cuisine, American, Slovenian, Italian, Croatian, German, Greek, Serbian, Chinese and French restaurants. All located around E. 55th to E. 72nd and St. Clair. Once numerous bars dotted the avenue, but now they have been replaced by food establishments. Since the new year St. Vitus parish organizations have served the following diverse dinner entrees: chicken, pork chops, roast beef and pork, spaghetti, pancakes and sausages, home-made blood and rice sausages, sausages and eggs, shrimp and fish qnd sausage and kraut. Some of these have also been offered at Sts. Casimir, St. Andrews, St. Philip Neri, St. George and St. Francis parishes though at less frequent times. Slovenian E. 65th National Home clubroom also has Friday fish frys regularly with other choices of entrees such as goulash and polenta, meat loaf, pork chops, veal, buckwheat Grumblings (žgance) and cracklings (ocvikri) to mention a few. Also, Goodrich-Gannet Center at E. 55th and St. Clair serves- low-cost daily lunches to senior citizens. And the school children of St. Vitus are offered daily economical lunches during the school year. St. Clair of course has its share of the ubiquitous fast food restaurants. Also available throughout the avenue are cooked and roasted meals from grocery meat markets and deli shops. There are barbequed ribs, roast lamb, veal and other delectable choices of prepared food. To this writer it seems that our St. Clair locality has the highest concentration of eating out and prepared food emporiums in the citv. When ambling throughout the area, the tantalizing aromas of ethnic cooking artistry permeates the entire neighborhood, “How delicious it is!” p.m. Friday, May 12, the Collinwood Slovenian Home, 15810 Holmes Ave., will be the scene for a cabaret concert and dance, also presenting the Holmes Hall Buttonaires. Kuhar The Slovenian men’s and women’s choral group Korotan gave a very good singing performance on Saturday, April 22 at the Slovenian National Home, E. 65th and St. Clair. A total of 17 songs were sung. A salute to the well-known poet and translator Ivan Zorman was also given in honor of his 100th birthday. The opening program had both men’s and women’s groups singing together. The men’s group was then featured with solos sung by Janez Tominc and Nejči Slak. The program ended with the accompaniment of the Alpine Sextet for the last two songs. Ivan Hauptman read some of the poetry of Ivan Zorman during the course of the program. Korotan again displayed good singing by one of the many Slovenian cultural groups in the Greater Cleveland area. The director of the group, Rudi Knez, follows in the tradition of past directors in that his talent to direct Korotan enables a part of the Slovenian culture to continue for many more years. The mix of ages in this singing ensemble leads this reviewer to believe the Slovenian songs will continue into the next century. A very fine performance and the round of applauses for Korotan’s singing proved this point during the course of the concert. Deubel Tosses Hat Into Governor’s Race Stefan Deubel, former publisher of the German language newspapers in Cleveland’s west side, announced this week he is a candidate for the job of governor of Ohio. In his written announcement Deubel said, “We do not need to build new jails. We should build instead public housing. The flow of foreign products into the State of Ohio will be reduced to almost zero.” Besides his printing business, Deubel sells Rumanian made products in his store on Lorain Ave. He also stated, “The Ohio Lottery must change the present practice. We will bake our own bread and we will brew the beer which we will consume in Ohio, and I will bring new industry into our Buckeye State. The state liquor stores would be sold to private owners. Valencie, 38, a 1974 Rhodes Scholar from Wakeman, Ohio, and an employee of Jones Day Reavis & Pogue in the law firm’s Cleveland and Washington offices last summer, was struck by a truck and killed Monday in New York City where he was a law student at Columbia University. Mr. Valencie was a 1973 graduate of Kenyon College. He spent three years at Oxford University in England beginn-( ing in 1974 and earned a master’s degree in English and literature. From 1978 through 1984, Mr. Valencie was executive director of HALT. Americans for Legal Reform. TRAMPUSH On the post beside the back door of William J. Trampush’s Golden Horse Inn in Strongsville is carved the date, July 1, 1953. On that day Mr. Trampush and his wife, Josephine, dug the first dirt for the beginning of the tavern, their house on a hill behind it, a garage and horse barn. The couple prepared the blueprints and built the structures themselves. Mr. Trampush, a wood carver, inscribed the date on the post. The buildings were completed in 1955. The tavern was named for a gold Arabian horse that was one of several horses Mr. Trampush raised and rode on his property, along Pearl Rd. or in Mill Stream Run Reservation of the nearby Cleveland Metroparks. When he retired in the mid-1970s, he hired a manager for the inn. Mr. Trampush, 75, died Thursday, April 20 at his Strongsville home of congestive heart failure. He was born in Cleveland and attended East Technical High School. He grew up in the Slovenian neighborhood along St. Clair Ave. where his parents ran Trampush Grocery and Meat Market at 4110 St. Clair. His parents, Gabriel and Mary, opened the store in 1918. Mr. Trampush and two sisters, Olga and Rose, helped in the business after their father died in 1924. He closed the St. Clair store in 1953 after determining small independent groceries were unprofitable. When Mr. Trampush purchased his property, much of Strongsville was undeveloped. His property included the current site of Ledgewood, a residential community on tracts Mr. Trampush sold to that project developer. Mr. Trampush hunted game, mostly moose, in Canada until six years ago. He was a popular entertainer at Slovenian picnics where he played the button box, a European predecessor to the accordion. His wife died in 1964 and his only child, a son, died in 1984. He is survived by two sisters. Services were Monday, April 24 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Strongsville. Obtožnica zoper Northa je sicer vsebovala dvanajst točk, porota pa ga je proglasila nedolžnega pri devetih teh točk. Porotniki so namreč sprejeli argument Nor-thove obrambe, da je North pri omenjenih devetih točkah samo izpolnjeval povelja njegovih nadrejenih. Porota je vzela kar 12 dni za ugotovitev Northove krivde. V tem času so bili porotniki skupaj 64 ur. North je kršil zakon, ko je zavajal zvezni kongres, ko je le-ta skušal s posebno preiskavo izvedeti, za kaj je pravzaprav šlo v Iran-kontra aferi. North je tudi uničil dokumente v zvezi s to afero, druge dokumente pa spremenil tako, da so dali neresnično sliko poteka te afere. Eden od porotnikov, ki je po zaključitvi sojenja včeraj govoril z novinarji, dejal, da nedolžen človek tega ne bi počenjal. Dalje, North je kršil zakon, ker je sprejel varnostno ograjo za svojo hišo od človeka, povezanega z Iran-kontra afero. Uslužbenec zvezne vlade takih daril ne sme Prejemati. Ko je 78-letni sodnik Gerhard Gesell ! prebiral odločitev porote, je bil North videti bled, ni pa vidno reagiral. Pozneje je pa izjavil) da smatra izid sodnega procesa za delno zmago. Porota je potrdi-!a> je rekel Keker, da ni nihče nad zakonom, ^eker je očitno osebno prizadel Northa, ko ■je med sojenjem primerjal Northa s Hitler-Jem. V svoji včerajšnji izjavi je North to primerjavo posebno omenil. Prizivi, o katerih je govoril North, gotovo bodo trajali več let. Nekateri kongresniki 'n drugi, ki Northa zagovarjajo, zahtevajo 0d predsednika Busha, da takoj pomilosti ^°rtha. Bush ima to pravico po ameriški Ustavi. Z isto pravico je namreč takratni Predsednik Gerald Ford pomilostil svojega Prednika Richarda Nixona. Tako Nixon ni moral pred sodišče zaradi njegove vloge v atergate aferi. Nekateri dokumenti, Uporabljeni v sojenju Northu, so namreč da-uekaterim opazovalcem ta vtis. Sojenja udeležencem Iran-kontra afere Northoro niso še končana. Atlantis uspešno izstreljeno v vesolje — Astronavti že izpustili umetni sond proti Veneri — Polet poteka normalno CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Le pet minut je manjkalo, in bi bili strokovnjaki NASA prisiljeni zopet odložiti izstrelitev zrakoplova Atlantisa. Vender so ugotovili, da so razmere ugodne in tako včeraj popoldne ob 2.47 so raketni motorji pognali Atlantis proti vesolju, skupaj s 5 astronavti, od katerih jih je štirje že obkrožilo zemeljsko oblo, le eden je novinec. Izstrelitev je bila normalna in je Atlantis dosegel predvideno višino. Sinoči so astronavti uspešno izpustili umetni sond, ki nosi ime Magellan. Magellan ima Venero za cilj, polet bo pa trajal kar 456 dni, torej do avgusta 1990. Ko bo do Venere prišel, bo Magellan ta skrivnostni planet obkro-ževal in za predvidenih 243 dni pošiljal podatke o razmerah na Veneri. Celoten projekt stane čednih 550 milijonov dolarjev. Astronavti danes zjutraj poročajo, da naprave na Atlantisu delujejo brezhibno in pričakujejo uspešen polet. — Kratke vesti — Beijing, Ki. — Včeraj se je več kot sto tisoč Kitajcev udeležilo protestne demonstracije v središču tega mesta. Tu in tam je prišlo do manjših spopadov s policisti, vendar ne ena in ne druga stran ni iskala incidenta. Pred množico demonstrantov so policisti popustili in se umaknili. Demonstranti so v glavnem univerzitetni študentje, pridružuje se jim pa vedno več zaposlenih, od navadnih delavcev, do novinarjev in zdravstvenih delavcev in drugih. Naša skupnost je nastala po ekscesih uničevanja. Revolucija in spremembe s svojim prekoračenjem najbolj o-snovnih človekovih pravic je v svet poslala Slovence in jih razselila po raznih krajih. Zdrava pamet nam kaže, da narod gradi, ljudstvo zida in tisti, ki rušijo, delajo proti koristim ljudstva, saj uničujejo trud in znoj njegovega stoletnega garanja. Sele danes v Sloveniji hitijo z resnico na dan. Saj v laž ni nihče verjel, a prikrivanje resnice je opravilo svoje. Vendar narod naš dokaze hrani. Hranimo jih mi, hranijo jih naši očetje in matere, hočemo jih zapustiti našim otrokom. Narod gradi. V zaobljubah pred kugo, lakoto in vojsko je bilo zgrajenih mnogo cerkva in naj si je zasluge lastil kakšen knez ali vladar, jim je preprosto ljudstvo dalo svoj pečat. Cerkev nikdar ni bila le kraj, kjer naj bi se preprosto ljudstvo učilo samo ponižnosti in pokornosti, temveč tudi hiša upanja in enakosti, tolažba v težkih časih. Naj so pravoverni in gospoda, ki je imela prve vrste pri oltarju, v dejanju še tako izdajali Kristusa, je evangelij vedno in povsod, neposredno, brez pretvarjanja in slehernemu odprtemu razumljivo govoril večno resnico. Narod je bil tisti, ki je vedno in znova svoje namišljene pastirje vračal na pravo pot. Narod gradi. Gradi doma, gradi v zamejstvu in zdomstvu. Kdo more namreč prešteti dneve in tedne, leta in desetletja tistih učiteljic, ki posvečajo vso svojo sposobnost, da bi kdo od njim zaupanih otrok mogel spoznati Slovenijo kot svojo domovino? Kdo more našteti vse tiste duhovnike, ki so tiho, brez vidnih priznanj vcepljali v svoje ljudstvo krščanske in slovenske vrednote, da ne bi zašel na stranpota? Kdor more iz pozabe priklicati neverjetno število tistih, ki so pometali šolske prostore, postavljali klopi za prireditve, pisali vabila in članke za naše liste, raznašali časopise, pekli krofe za slovenske prireditve in morda, če jim je še kaj moči ostajalo, še sami prisedli k poslušalcem, gledalcem itd. Bilo je delo marljive čebelice, ki je pripravljala hrano bodočemu zarodu in prav je, da se jih danes spomnimo. Kajti po mnogih se danes poimenujejo stavbe, šole in podobno, pa naj bo to Janez Hladnik, ravn. Marko Bajuk, škof Gregorij Rožman, in to je prav, a njihova ljubezen ni bila nič večja od tiste matere, ki je od rojstva otroku presajala svojo ljubezen, od očeta, ki je s ponosom branil svoja prepričanja v borbi in potem desetletja garal, da je ustvaril svoj dom in dom slovenskih družin. Kako čudovita je ta domovina v zdomstvu, kako veličastna in vendar kako krhka. Saj se lahko v kratkem izniči in iz nje ostanejo le stavbe, orumele knjige in kup razvalin. Boj za standard je ponavadi tisto gonilo, ki vleče mladino proč od skupnostnega življenja, in tista napaka starejših, ki jo pozabijo mladini odpraviti. Njihova preprosta raču-nica, »spravil te bom k boljšemu kruhu«, je popolnoma Nisem je zatajil. Nasprotno — bil sem ponosen nanjo Končal sem s čitanjem časopisa. Seveda sem prečital samo tisto, kar me je zanimalo. Imel sem na mizi še kup revij in knijg, ki se jih še nisem lotil. Vse je bilo v angleščini, jaz pa sem si želel slovenske besede. Šel sem k omari in segel po prvi slovenski knjigi. Bila je ena izmed Cankarjevih knjig. Šel sem nazak k mizi in odprlo knjigo. Čital sem »Mater je zatajil«. To zgodbo sem dobro poznal, ker sem jo že večkrat čital. Toda v tistem trenutku, v tistem mojem razpoloženju bi težko našel kaj primernejšega... Lepa beseda, lepe misli, vzorna slovenščina. Zopet sem jo prečital. In ko sem prišel na konec, sem v veliko osebno zadoščenje ugotovil, da sem bil boljši od tistega študenta, ki v družbi sošolcev ni hotel prepoznati svoje matere, kmetice, obute v škornje in oblečene v ponošeno kmečko obleko, ki je pred šolo čakala nanj. Potuhnil se je in izgubil v množici študentov. Kakšno naključje,' da se mi je knjiga odprla vprav na tistem mestu, kjer se je zgodba začela! Jaz sem bil vedno ponosen, da so bili moji starši s kmetov. Vesel sem bil, ko je šel oče še razmeroma mlad v pokoj in se zopet lotil kmetovanja. Pred tem smo hodili domov samo za velike počitnice. Tako je oče spet postal kmet, mama kmetica in jaz kmečki fant. Verjetno sem bil s to spremembo najbolj zadovoljen jaz. Zadnja leta na univerzi nisem prihajal domov tako pogosto kot prej. Imel sem službo. In komaj sem opravil en izpit, sem se začel pripravljati za drugega. Ker sem hotel biti advokat, sem opravil v tem času tudi brezplačno enoletno prakso na sodišču, ki je bila predpisana, in položil zadnje izpite za doktorat. Zato vsega tega moji starši niso vedeli. Ko sem dobil obvestilo, kdaj bo promocija (slovesna podelitev doktorskih diplom na univerzi), sem šel domov. Na domu mi je sestra povedala, da starši sušijo seno na travniku. Šel sem tja. Bilo je kakšne pol ure daleč. Ko sem prišel na hrib, sem jih videl na travniku v dolini. Obračali so seno. Pomagal jim je moj bratranec Tine, ki je pred kratkim urprl v Girardu, Ohio. Vsi trije so bili tako zaposleni, da so me opazili šele, ko sem prišel do njih z grabljami na rami. Našel sem jih pri kozolcu. Pozdravil sem jih in jim želel: »Bog daj srečo!« Pozdravili smo se, podali roke in mama je vprašala: »Kako to, da si prišel domov sredi tedna? Ali se je kaj posebnega zgodilo?« »O nič! Čas imam, pa sem sklenil, da ga najboljše izkoristim, če grem domov!« Spregovorili smo še nekaj besed in začeli obračati seno. Nismo dolgo obračali, ko se je zopet oglasila mama: »Zdravko, kar tako nisi prišel. Poznam te. Slutim, da si prišel zaradi neke važne stvari, ki je niti do sobote nisi mogel odložiti. Povej, kaj te je prignalo domov!« Navadno sem hodil domov v soboto. »Imate prav,« sem odgovoril, »prišel sem zaradi promocije. Na univerzi mi bodo na svečan način izročili doktorsko diplomo in me proglasili za doktorja prava. Hočem, da pridete z očetom in sestro v Ljubljano, da prisostvujete promociji. Na kosilo bomo šli v Marijanišče, kamor vas vabi g. prošt.« Očetu so padle grablje iz rok, stopil je k meni, mi dal roko, me poljubil in rekel: »Častitam!« Takoj se je obrnil. Imel je solze v očeh. Ko smo začeli zopet obračati, seje oglasil bratranec: »Veš kaj, Zdravko, to se pa ne spodobi, da ti jezični doktor, obračaš seno!« »Nič ne mari, Tine, saj me poznaš. Saj veš, da jaz to rad delam. Sicer pa ni nobene škode, če jezični doktor dela tudi z rokami in ne samo z možgani!« Ko smo kasneje sedeh’ na travi v senci kozolca ter mal° jedli in pili, se mi je zdelo, da mamo nekaj tare. Bila je za" skrbljena in se skoraj ni zan'" mala, kaj smo govorili. Končno se je le oglasila in vprašala- »Zdravko, kako naj se oblečem? Rekel si, da bo še Pet drugih študentov promoviraj in da so razen tebe vsi mestni otroci. Torej bodo njihove matere ali sestre tudi meščansko oblečene.« »Mama, v tisti obleki Pr'^’ te, v kateri greste v cerkev. če je dobra za Boga, bo tudi za univerzo.« »Ja, kaj pa ruta? Jaz klobu ka nimam. Imam eno ali dve šerpe, ki jih pa skoraj nikoli ne nosim. V ruti... v kmečki ru 1 pa ne grem rada, ker bon’ sama in tudi tebi verjetno 11 bo všeč.« , »Mama, zdaj je pa tega ^ volj! Jaz zahtevam, da PT .^ z ruto na glavi ali pa ostanja doma! Jaz se ne sramujem. ^ sem kmečkega rodu, naspr . no, jaz sem ponosen na s rod in na vas, mojo dTa mamo... pošteno slovens kmetico!« . Oče in Tine sta pritrjeval31 mama se je potolažila. Ko smo nekaj dni 4opili na univerzi v z dvorano, je bila že precej z ^ dena. Poiskal sem se vse tri in šel k tajniku, ^ mu predstavim. Nato pa pridite v šolsko dvorano, kjer Vas bodo otroci lepo sprejeli in pozdravili. Otroci se prav pridno pripravljajo na ta veliki praznik Materinskega dne. Učijo se petja, deklamacij in igrico: Jurček, pod vodstvom g. Rudija Kneza. Prireditev se bo pričela ob 3. uri popoldne. Lepo Vas vabimo, dragi starši, sorodniki, prijatelji naše Slovenske šole, da se udeležite sv. maše, šmarnične pobožnosti in Materinske proslave. Pokažite otrokom, da cenite njihov trud, ki ga vlagajo v učenje materinega jezika. Iskreno Vas vabi pa tudi Odbor staršev zgrešena, saj ne upošteva drugih vrednot duhovne narave, ki jih starejši še sami ne upoštevajo, kaj šele mladina. Samo eno je potrebno — ljubezen. Ne toliko ljubezen v samoumevne, izkustvene reči. Odkar so narodi dobili svoj krst in se razlikujejo eden od drugega, jim dokončno identitetno mero ne dajejo heroji in misleci — čeprav smo zanje upravičeno hvaležni — ampak svetniki, znani in neznani, ki polnijo mero ljubezni. Biti svetnik danes pa ni lahka stvar in zadeva trenutka. Biti svetnik pomeni tlačansko garanje let in desetletij v službi naroda, v službi slovenstva. Danes se v domovini sprašujejo, kaj je bilo tisto, kar nas je ohranilo narodu: slovenstvo ali vera? Mi pa se prav tako na tem 34. Slovenskem dnevu sprašujemo, kako uskladiti obe te vrednosti, katerima moramo dodati še tretjo — pripadnost novi domovini — da bomo ne samo zdržali, ampak čimveč koristili slovenstvu v domovini, hkrati pa tudi naši in naših otrok domovini. Naj vsakdo, ki je udeležen na tem prazniku slovenstva, stori, ne samo, kar mora, ampak tudi kar more. Tako ne bomo več toliko v skrbeh za naš življenjski čolnič, saj bo premagal vse viharje, ki mu pretijo. Ne pretijo pa samo njemu, pretijo tako narodu v domovini, kakor nam v izseljenstvu. Slovenskem dnevu 2. aprila v Argentini je izšel prejšnji petek Gradovi na Slovenskem Vojko Zakrajšek Naša Slovenija, april 1989 Graščina in samostan v Olimju Slabo uro hoda od Podčetrtka, znanega zdraviliškega kraja, je v tihi dolinici pod pobočjem gozdnate Rudnice skrita olimska graščina, ki se je na zahodni strani tišči nekdanja samostanska cerkev. Na obiskovalca naredi močan vtis že prvi pogled na graščino. Barvna poslikava zunanjosti je namreč dokaj nenavadna. Pisana kombinacija sivo niodre in bele barve nasprotuje naši predstavi o običajno pustih, sivih pročeljih grajskih poslopij. Ker pa je graščina združena s cerkvijo, je ta nenavadnost kaj hitro pojasnjena. To so namreč barve pav-Hncev, menihov katoliškega reda, ki so nekoč imeli tukaj svoj samostan. Zgodovina Olimja pa se je začela že davno prej, preden so sem prišli menihi. Že leta 1015 je menda na tem mestu stal gradič, verjetno pa je bil *° le utrjen stolp. Dodamo Jahko samo, da so kraj dobro izbrali. Lastniki ozemlja so bili pilštanjski grofje, njihova dedinja grofica Hema pa je po moževi smrti in po smrti obeh sinov posest poklonila samostanu v Krki na Koroškem. je bila tam ustanovljena ItfŠka škofija, je ta prevzela tudi bivšo samostansko po-sest. v naslednjih stoletjih so kofje dajali gospoščino Olim-Je v najem fevdnikom. Ker je bil prostor v grajski kapeli pretresen, so začeli ob zahodnem traktu graščine zidati novo cerkev. Leta 1675 je bila zgrajena, sto let zatem pa so dozidali še kapelo sv. Frančiška. Tudi slikarski mojstri so imeli veliko dela, saj je notranjost cerkve vsa v barvah, od obokanih stropov do tal. Umetnine so res vredne ogleda in so z opremo vred enkraten zaklad. Menihi so naročili prezidave tudi v graščinskem poslopju. Na dvorišču so zazidali arkade v nadstropju in dozidali manjkajoči zadnji trakt. Največja znamenitost gradu je lekarna.
