Vrhovnik By MicKael Vrhovnik The Third National Bowling Tournament of the SSPZ passed into history last Sunday afternoon at Bennetfs Ace Arcade Alleys in Chi¬ cago and along with it plenty of records for thc book. So thorough was the attack on the old marks, irrespective of division, that only three escaped being topped, one of which was the men’s Doubles score of 1174 established last year, and the other two individual high single games of 246 and 230 for men and vvomen, respectively. Dominating the tournament play were the SPAR- TAN bowlers from Cleveland, who returned home with trophies and cash prizes emblematic of cham¬ pionships in the Five-man and Five-woman Team and Doubles events, setting three new marks in acquiring 1940 title to them. The Five-man Team champions, JOE MOŽE, FRANK KONČAN, EDVVARD and STANLEY CENTA, AND ANTHONY BOLKA, bowled superbly, crashing the maples for a new three year record of 2784, vvhile last year’s winners, the UTO- PIANS, with a total of 2652, had to be content with runners-up honors. The Five-woman Team champions, for the second consecutive year, led by STELLA ZA¬ BUKOVEC and ANTONIA ŽAGAR, repeaters for the women’s Doubles title, amassed the surprising total of 2260, more than 300 pins higher than the previous high. The HOOSIER PALS entry in this division took second plače with a 2150 score. No new records were established in the Men’s Doubles event where LUDWIG BATIS and AN- THONY BOLKA collaborated to displace the former two-time champs, AL MAREN and M ATT LEVAR of the BALKANS, but in the women’s division, a 992 score vvas posted for ANTONIA ŽAGAR and STELLA ZABUKOVEC, bettering the previous high by 122 pins and giving the same combination the honor of copping the title tvvice in a row. In the runners-up position is a HOOSIER PALS duet, LEONA (Turk) SCHOOLY and ELLEN BARNES, who bowled 877, higher by seven pins than the old mark. In the men’s Singles event, the number of out- standing scores were few, for only JOHN POUHE of the Chicago VICTORIANS was able to break through last year’s high of 594 with a record break- ing series of 622, winning the crown over FELIX BLAZ1CH of the Indianapolis DANICA LODGE by a margin of 39 pins. On the other hand, the vvomen entries in the same event shovved exceptional form as they forced ANNA VOLKER of the HOOSIER PALS, 1940 SSPZ Singles Champ, to extend herself to a record total of 516, and MARY LENKO of the BAL¬ KANS, the runner-up, to a 510 score. Due to the large number of teams bovvling on Sunday, 32 in ali, the final and official All-events and High Single Game vvinners and their respective scores are not available for publication in this issue of the Napredek, but will be reported by the Committee in the follovving issue, along with a complete list of scores, as well as cash prizes avvarded to teams and individuals. Trophies and cash prizes for All-events and High Single Games which have not been avvarded because of incomplete scores, have by this time been forvvarded to their proper destinations. Ali bovvlers and rooters are complimented on the fine sportsmanship displayed throughout the tour¬ nament, and but for the slovving up of events on the opening day, due entirely to unforseen circumstances, the VICTORIAN TOURNAMENT COMITTEE can be proud of the fact that the day affair vvas completed with little or no confusion and to the satisfaetion of nearly ali wl]o attended. Perhaps, no part of the tournament vvas more exciting or thrilling than the Five-man and Five-vvoman Team events of the final day. Every seat in the stands back of the bovvlers and every inch of space in the aisles were crovvded vvith spectators. There vvas cheering and yelling galore, not just for Lodge favorites, but for anyone who happened to make a good hit. That vvas the špirit ali the way through. The attendance at the “Kegler’s Welcome Dance” at the spacious Masonic Temple vvas quite large, especially, in the lovver hali vvhere the crovvd vvas so thick at times one could hardly move around. There, as during the banquet late Sunday afternoon when more than 250 people enjoyed a several course dinner, the špirit of the SSPZ vvas rampant. Critical eyes are follovving you! Not so long ago I observed a clever advertisment which ap¬ peared as follows: A character sketch of an attraetive girl with a huge pair of glaring eyes, a vvinsome smile, and the harsh words “Critical eyes are follow- ing you,” were attached to the ad. Incidentally, I had been ne\v at my work and was too con- cerned about doing as well as I possibly could rather than letting people disrupt my work. But those words seemed to haunt me as I greeted the peo¬ ple. I felt a tense strain when I walked to another counter or when I hustled to fill an order. I’d quickly look to see if they were “poking fun at me” to their neighbors. But much to my surprise, they had found some- thing more important 4o view and chat over than “poor little defenseless me.” The window display of the newest Spring garments and such attraeted their attention. For a few mo- ments those thoughts faded away. In the meantime I was k e p t occupied doing little things, until a certain lassie kept my mind and feet moving. “Oh, where did you find that crazy hair style? Good gosh, the long nails; like claws!” Of course other people looked and criti- cized. As I recalled the critical remarks of some people, I be¬ gan to wonder, “Does every total stranger express , his personal opinion directly to you or does it reach me through the third party ?” One day, while in town wait- ing for my car, I, too, appeared inwardly critical. As I stood on the busy Street of Pittsburgh I thoughtlessly criticized every other person that hastened by. Either clothes, looks and ac- tions, attraeted me. In the meantime I overcame my silly, but natural circum¬ stances and came to one defin- ite conclusion, be it a poor one or not too misleading. Be you an ignorant, intelligent or any other sort of person, you will be criticized and you wi 11 criticize. But again, beware of critical Sygan Hill, Pa. — Gee, I feel lost here! Maybe I’d better go home w i t h my scribbling thrash. But say, I’d better write a few lines for our Vrtec page before I’m ready to be admitted into the adult department, hadn’t I? I’ve attempted to write quite often, but just couldn’t find any particular subject I liked well enough to scribble about. Since we boys will get into mushball practice soon, that subject is quite suitable, isn’t it? Plans are nicely being laid down. We’ve got a niče coopera- tive group of boys. Have you a team in your lo- cality? We’d like to challenge any team, be you in the begin- ners or champs class of Juniors. I can truly say we have felt the grand feeling of beginner’s play and lučk as well as winning glories. I can also say ifs fun | practicing, playing, winning, losing and meeting some grand boys of different localities. Ifs grand to b^a good šport and to associate with good sports.
