JOHN GRABNAR ORKESTRA OkrepčiJa in dobra zabava Files of Motor Vehicles Mechanized Columbus, O., August 14. — "Vital information on Ohio's more than four million licensed drivers is now at our very fingertips," disclosed the Department of Highway Saftey today, "with the completion of the initial phase of a gigantic mechanization project. Heretofore up-to-date records on licensed drivers have been kept by old filing methods," the Department said, "but now complete facts on all drivers in every one of Ohio's 88 counties are no further from us than the tabulating machine. The program's initial phase—codifying these facts in a "Master Work File"—will enable the Department's Bureau of Motor Vehicles to pin-point and analyze information in a miraculously short time." "Mechanization has been an objective of ours for a long time," said U. C. Felty, Director of the Highway Safety Department and C. E. Nofer, Acting Registrar of the Bureau in a joint statement. "Although actual work on the project began in November, 1955, we have looked toward achieving this goal since the dawn of the electronic age." First important use of the Master "Work" File will unfold September 4 when drivers whose licenses are up for renewal arq notified through the mail. Nofer CHICAGO. ILL. Weekends call Deerfield 1578; weekdays LOngbeach 1-8410 has called a meeting tomorrow at Bureau headquarters in Columbus of all Deputy Registrars in the State to brief them on the new system of issuing driver's licensee, and to review the specially prepared instruction manual on the entire program, Drivers whose licenses are about to expire will fill in the form received in the mail and present it "for conditioning" to the local Deputy Registrar. The operator and chauffeur license forms also have been revised and will allow space for the permanent license number — consisting of the initial of the last name followed by 12 numerical digits. All information on the license has been coded on the Master "Work" Card-File at the Bureau and includes name, address, license number and physical description. Additional information coded on the "Work" card is type of license, and whether the individual has had driver training. "The coding system is the very heart of the tremendous methanization project," stated Director Felty, of the Department. "It will enable us to find out practically anything we wish to know statistically about the driving public in the state." Carl J. Martin, Chief of the Drivers License Division of the Bureau revealed that—at the request of Director Felty—he is now in the process of breaking down the "Work" file into age groups. The breakdown, when completed will show how many drivers of different age categories there are in Ohio. "Any number of breakdowns are possible," said Martin. "Eventually, for example, we could discover how many drivers have had driver training, and the number of drivers in each county — a statistical analysis not possible under the old system."
