VVSlAill Slovenska župnija sv. Gregorija Velikega | St. Gregory the Great Slovenian Church 17/50 Številka - Number / Leto - Year 27. 4. 2014 2. VELIKONOČNA - BELA NEDELJA Nedelja Božjega usmiljenja 2nd SUNDAY OF EASTER Divine Mercy Fr. To vidimo v evangeliju, ko Kristus nenadoma »stopi v sredo mednje « in jim podari moč za razkrajanje zla: »Katerim grehe odpustite, so jim odpuščeni«. Zatem apostoli zaman pripovedujejo Tomažu o svojem izkustvu. On hoče vse videti in otipati. FISH FRY was a great success and the Slovenian School teachers would like to thank all the parents and students who worked at the event and those who helped with the set up on Thursday night. We would also like to thank all the parishioners, who came and enjoyed some fish and chips, supporting and helping the Slovenian School fundraiser. Hvala. 2nd Sunday of Easter Response: Give thanks to the Lord for he is good; his steadfast love endures forever. First Reading Acts 2:42-47 The first Christian community continues to grow, united in mind and heart. Second Reading 1 Peter 1:3-9 The resurrection of Jesus fills us with a joy that is indescribable. Gospel John 20:19-31 The risen Lord appears to the apostles and gives them the gift of the Holy Spirit. "Faithful to the teaching of the apostles, to the brotherhood, to the breaking of bread." Illustration According to research, most people believe in the paranormal in one form or another. Seventy -four per cent of Americans claim to have had a paranormal experience of some kind, and more than two-thirds of Americans accept the existence of ghosts, visitors from outer space, astrology and other such phenomena. The history of TV and film is awash with shows that reveal our fascination with the mysterious and the unexplained: TV shows such as The Twilight Zone, Tales from the Darkside and Supernatural, and movies such as The Twilight Saga series. In the TV series The X-Files, FBI agents Mulder and Scully investigate marginalised, unsolved cases involving paranormal phenomena - the so-called X-files. Mulder believes in the existence of aliens and the paranormal while Scully is the rational sceptic, who uses scientific 136 | VESTNIK 2014 V" \ 'JLI logic to disprove Mulder's theories. The tag line from the series states: "The truth is out there." But what counts as truth? Why do some people believe and others doubt? What does it mean to believe anyway? Gospel Teaching It's easy to cast today's Gospel as a kind of X-file - a case of the paranormal that flies in the face of rational scientific explanation. We could perhaps paint Thomas as the Scully figure - the doubter, the rationalist, the unbeliever - with the other apostles as naive Mulder-type figures, desperate to believe at any cost. Modern-day critics would like to reduce the resurrection to another X-file - something any rational person would dismiss, on a par with belief in ghosts and UFOs. However, a closer look at today's readings will show that there's something much deeper at work here. In the Gospel the disciples are grieving and frightened, huddled behind locked doors. Into that fear and sadness steps Jesus - and his presence drives out their fear and replaces it with peace and joy. More than that, he brings a mission. He commissions the disciples to continue his work of transforming the world, just as he has transformed their lives. And Jesus empowers them to do this - giving them the same Holy Spirit with which he himself was empowered at his baptism, at the start of his ministry. Their mission is to continue the work of Christ in reconciling the world to God - removing the barrier between God and humanity, through the forgiveness of sins and the healing of broken relationships. Far from being an X-file - an easily dismissed paranormal event - this experience of the risen Christ is life changing and world changing. The whole episode with Thomas and his disbelief highlights the essential element in this experience - a personal relationship with the risen Lord. As Thomas meets the wounded Christ, he recognises that this is the same Jesus he knew before the crucifixion - this is his friend, his Master. And Thomas goes further, to make a huge leap of faith - this is his Lord and God. Application Every Sunday at Mass we proclaim the Creed - the "I believe". The word "creed" comes from the Latin word credo, meaning "I believe"; and the word "believe" derives ultimately from a word related to "love". When we pray the Creed, when we say we believe, we are making a statement about the person we love, the person in whom we trust, the one to whom we have given our hearts -just as Thomas did. "The truth is out there." For the Christian, the truth of the resurrection will never be proved or disproved by scientific reasoning or historical data, but by the effects of that truth in our world and in our personal lives. The first reading gives an indication of some of those effects: a faithfulness to the teaching of the apostles, to the community, to the breaking of bread, to prayer. A faithfulness, in other words, to the person of Jesus now living among his people. And we express this faithful- ness in a Christ-like generosity and caring for others - in, for example, the sharing of food and possessions. Perhaps most importantly, the real hallmarks of the risen Jesus are the peace and joy, the healing and reconciliation that his Spirit brings into people's lives - driving out fear and sadness, overcoming the death-dealing power of sin. This ministry of hope and reconciliation is the mission of the Christian community, the task Christ has empowered us for. This is the real sign of the resurrection, the truth that we are called to live out and embody, for the healing and salvation of the world. We remember ... ZAHVALA ob pogrebu Franca Pelcarja Our eternal gratitude goes out to Father Drago and to all who attended the visitation and funeral for our father and husband, Franc Pelcar. Your presence not only provided a feeling of comfort to our family but also a source of strength during this trying time. We thank you for taking the time from your busy schedules to come and share in the remembrance of our father Franc Pelcar. Your kind words, beautful flowers, donations, and all those who prepared baked goods, helped us withstand this time of sorrow with great strenght and courage. Although this is a time of grief for all of us, we found solace and warmth in knowing how much he was loved and respected by all his friends and acquaintances. Franc was called by God to join him peacefully and quickly on April 14. We know that many of his friends who have already joined God in heaven, have been waiting for him to come play cards and enjoy some vino. Our heartfelt thanks to all of you. May he rest in peace.
