Abstract
The article  presents  Scopoli's  manustript  Icones  Fungorum  Carnioliae,  the  unpublished  icons  
of fungi to Scopoli's  first  edition  of Flora  Carniolica  (1760),  kept in the  National  Museum of  
Natural  History  (Muséum National  d'Histoire  Naturelle)  in Paris.  It consists  of 47 oil  plates  of  
small  folio  format,  bound  in a book. On this  plates  189 fungi  are  depicted  in astonishing  detail  
and in vivid colours  by  unknown  painter  Thomas Hörmann.  To most pictures  Scopoli's  hand  
written  comments  (to  the  first  edition  of  Flora  Carniolica)  are  added.  The work  is of  considerable  
taxonomic  importance.  With  Icones  fungorum  we do  not  only  get  insight  into  the  taxonomy  of  the  
described  fungal  species but  also  insight  in the  fungal  classification  and  systematics  adopted  by 
Scopoli in the first edition of Flora.

Izvleček
Članek  predstavlja  rokopis Podobe kranjskih  gob,  neobjavljene  podobe gob  k  prvi izdaji 
Kranjske  flore  (1760),  ki  ga hranijo  v  prirodoslovnem  muzeju v  Parizu.  Delo sestavlja  47  olj  
na platnu  v majhnem  folio  formatu,  ki  so vezana  v obliki knjige. Na teh  oljih  je predstavljeno  
189 podob gob, ki jih je z veliko  natančnostjo  in v živih barvah  naslikal  neznani  slikar  Thomas  
HÖrmann.  K podobam  so dodani  Scopolijevi  lastnoročni  komentarji,  ki se nanašajo  na opisane  
glive v prvi izdaji Flore.  Delo  je  taksonomsko  pomembno, saj s  podobami dobimo vpogled  v 
mnoge  vrste  gliv  iz prve  izdaje  Flore  kakor  tudi  vpogled  v način  klasifikacije  gliv,  ki jo je Scopoli  
uporabil v prvi izdaji Kranjske flore.

Introduction
It is  astonishing  how modest  is  our  knowledge  of the  life  of Joannes  Antonius  Scopoli,  one  
of the  greatest  naturalists  of his time,  who  spent  sixteen  years,  from  1754 to  1769, working  as a 
physician  of  the  mercury  mines in Idria  in Slovenia  and  exploring  the  nature  in the  noblest  sense 
of  the  word  leaving  behind  the  work  of  natural  history  of  immense value,  the  scope  and  breadth  of  
which  exceed  the  limits  of  imagination.  Partly  so, because  he was personally  a very  modest  person  
and spoke about himself only by rare occasions.
Very modest  is  also  his known  material  legacy,  correspondence  and manuscripts.  Leaving  
Idrija  for  his next  post  in Schemnitz  in 1769, he took  all  of his important  documents  with  him. 
What  remained  in Idria  of  his material  legacy  should  have  been sent  in the  time  period  1809-1813 
to  the  unknown  addressee  in Jena  by the  farmacist  Carl  Freyer,  Scopoli’s  successor  in Idria  (Voss 
1884 on  p. 16). Unknown  is also  the  fate  of  his collections.  They are  being considered  mostly  to  be 
lost.  Therefore,  any  newly  discovered  manuscript  or  part  of  his material  legacy  is of  even greater  
importance for understanding his work and a way of his thinking.
In  recent  years, two  manuscripts  of Scopoli,  being  practically  unknown  to wider public,  
were discovered.  The first  was the manuscript  entitled  »Icones Fungorum  Carnioliae,  qui  in 
Flora  Carniolica  numerantur  Edit.  1760 Viennae«, (in further  text  Icones fungorum),  which  is 
deposited  in the  botanical  library  of  the  department  of  cryptogamy  (Manuscrits  de la  Bibliothèque  
de Botanique  -  Cryptogamie )  of the  National  Museum of Natural  History  (Muséum National  
d'Histoire Naturelle) in Paris with the signature Ms CRY 220.
The second  is  the  manuscript  entitled  »Icones  Lichenum  Carnioliae,  qui in Flora  Carniolica  
numerantur  Edit. 1760  Viennae« (in further  text  Icones lichenum),  which  is  deposited  in the  
botanical  library  of the National  Museum  of Natural  History  in  Vienna (Naturhistorisches  
Museum Wien) with  the  signature  Bibl. botanica  musei palat.  Vindob.  K 6/51. Icones  fungorum  
were  shortly  described  soon  after  their  discovery  in Proteus  (Piltaver 1995) and  Icones  lichenum  
two years later also in Proteus, both in slovenian language only ( Piltaver 1997).
On the  solemn  occasion  of the  300
th
 anniversary  of birth  of Joannes  Antonius  Sopoli  (1723 – 
1788), the  author  aims to  take  a closer  look  to  Icones  fungorum  in order  to  present  them  to  wider  
public.
Flora Carniolica
Less  than  six  years  after  his arrival  in Idria,  Scopoli  published  his first  fundamental  floristic  
work,  Flora Carniolica (Scopoli 1760), further  as Flora.  Flora  is written  using Linnaean  genera  as 
well  but  retaining  old  pre-linnaean  nomenclature  for  species names.  Although  very  rich  in original  
information,  this  work  is,  as many older  works  written  in pre-linnaean  manner,  suffering  from  
the  lack  of  the  assignation  of  the  studied  organisms  to  their  modern  specific  names (Andrietti & 
Polidori 2019). This problem  is even more  pronounced  in cryptogams  than  in phanerogams.  In 
Flora  215 fungal  taxa  are  described,  of  which  (in order  of  description)  122 from  the  genus  Agaricus, 
32 from  the  genus Boletus, 4 from  the  genus Phallus, 21 from  the  genus Elvela, 2 from  the  genus 
Peziza, 12 from the genus  Clavaria, 11 from the genus  Lycoperdon and 11 from the genus  Mucor.
In the  second  edition  of  Flora  (Scopoli 1772), modern  Linnaean  nomenclature  is used.  Scopoli  
cites  many taxa  from  the  first  edition  in the  second  edition  of Flora,  from  where  we can  deduce  
some modern  names  for  old  description  in Flora,  many  other  taxa  remain  an  unsolved  puzzle.  With  
the  help  of  Icones  fungorum,  we do  not  only  get  a good  insight  into  the  taxonomy  of  the  described  
fungal  species in the  Flora  but  also  in the  fungal  classification  and  systematics  adopted  by Scopoli.

Unknown Icones fungorum
Scopoli  does  not  mention  Icones  fungorum  in any  of  his writings  nor  is this  manuscript  known  
to  any  of  his biographers.  The  only  reference  of  Icones  can  be found  in Taxonomic  literature,  ed. 2, 
(TL2)  vol.  5  (Stafleau & Cowa n  1985),  where  two  further  related  references  are  mentioned.  
The first  is  the  report  from  the  meeting  of Botanical  Society  of France  (Société  Botanique  de 
France)  in 1870, where  abbé Chaboisseau  presented  in detail  the  original  manuscript  of Scopoli  
entitled  Icones  Fungorum  Carnioliae,  he had  acquired  in a public  auction  (Chaboisseau  1870). 
The second  is  the  article  in La bibliofilia  (1956),  with  the  report  of the  exhibition  of recently  
acquired  works,  among  them  also  Icones  fungorum,  by the  National  Museum of  Natural  History  
(Muséum National  d'Histoire  Naturelle)  in Paris.  This was seemingly  the  only  occasion,  by which  
Icones  fungorum  were  displayed  to  wider  public.  Today,  this  beautiful  work  is deposited  among  
the  collections  of  the  National  Museum of  Natural  History  in Paris,  where  the  author  has  had  the  
privilege to see and to study it during his stay to the Museum in january 1995.
Icones fungorum description
This work  consists  of  47 oil  plates  of  small  folio  format  (240 x 330 mm) with  paintings  of  fungi  
by  Thomas Hörmann,  who is  signed on the  2nd, 35th,  46th  and  47th  plate:  Thomas Hörmann  
pinxit in Idria.  The back side of each  canvas  is  glued  with  white  thin  paper. At the  beginning  
of plates  and  at  the  end  some paper  sheats  are  added.  All  this  is bound  in a form  of a book with  
wooden cover with cold stamped pigskin binding of XIV. or XV. century.

Much  of  a history  of  this  work  is evident  from  accompanioning  scriptures:  On the  back  side of  
the cover the text of the article by  Chaboisseau (1870) is added.
The oldest  is the  dedication  on  the  back side of  the  second  page by Scopoli  himself:  »Maecenati  
optimo D  D  Alfonso  Comiti Castiglioni,  Fungos Carniolicos  Benefitiorum  aeternum  memor.  
Joannes  Scopoli,  15. 8obris 1784« (Fig.  2). Scopoli  obviously  donate  this  work  to  to  the  count  
Alfonso  Castiglioni  as an expression  of gratitute  for  the  financial  support  in publishing  his late  
work Deliciae Florae et Faunae Insubricae ( Scopoli 1784).

On the  first  page of  the  inner  cover  in the  centre,  there  is the  Exlibris  of  Dr.  Rene Maire  (1878-
1949), french  botanist  and  mycologist  (Fig. 3). On the  upper right  there  is an imprint:  »Dr  René 
Maire, Faculté de Sciences, Alger 1922«. René Maire obviously acquired this work in 1922.
In the  left  upper corner  of the  Exlibris,  dedication  of Madamme  Maire  is written:  « Ce livre  
offert  par  Monsieur  Maire  Membre de l'Institut  du Museum d'Histoire  Naturelle  a été  remis par  
Madamme  René Maire  en Souvenir  du  désir  exprimé  par  son  mari.  S. Maire,  Alger  le  6 Décembre  
1949«. Obviously  this  work  was  donated  to  the  Museum  by madamme  Maire  as the  expression  of  
her husband's last wish. He died on 24
th
 of November 1949.
Painter Thomas Hörmann
Icones  fungorum  are  undoubtedly  bringing  more  light  to  the  mycological  work  of  Scopoli  but  
raise  also  many  questions,  which  remains  to  be answered  in  the  future.  The  first  one  is undoubtedly,  
who  was  Thomas  Hörmann,  the  painter  of  the  Icones  fungorum.  It  was  not  possible  to  obtain  any  
biographical  data  about  him at  all  even after  inquiring  the  National  galery  in Ljubljana.  However,  
the  collaboration  with  dr.  Sonja  Rozman  from  the  National  galery  of Slovenia  has brought  new  
discovery,  Icones lichenum  from  the  same oeuvre  of this painter,  which  are kept, as already  
mentioned, in the Natural history museum in Vienna.
Oil plates
The colour  background  of all  47  oil  plates  looks  quite  uniform  and was probably  prepared  
well  before  actual  painting  of  fungi  and  consists  of  dark  sea blue  coloured  background  (Methuen  
25F3-6, 24F3-6) with  cca  4 mm wide  golden  edge.  The  first  plate  (Fig. 1) holds  the  title,  ornamented  
in a form  of a schield:  »Icones  Fungorum  Carnioliǣ,  qui in Flora  Carniolica  numerantur.  Edit.  
1760 Viennǣ«.  
On  following  46 plates  189 figures  of  fungi,  arranged  taxonomically  to  genera  are  depicted.  There  
are  28 numbered  plates  representing  the  genus  Agaricus, 5 plates  with  Boletus, 1 plate  with  Phallus, 
1 plate with  Mucor, 5 plates with  Elvela, 4 plates with  Clavaria and 2 plates with  Lycoperdon.
Fungi  are  depicted  in astonishing  detail  in vivid natural  colours  in approximately  natural  size 
in the  order  they  were  collected.  Each  plate  holds  one to  six portraits  of fungi.  The back side of  
each  oil  canvas  is glued  with  very  thin  paper  (apparently  of  the  same quality  as in Flora).  On these  
pages we can  find  Scopoli's  comments  to  every  depicted  fungus  in reference  to  the  descriptions  
int  the  Flora  (Scopoli 1760), written  in ink by  Scopoli  himself  (Fig. 4). At one place  only,  by 
Agaricus  Tab. III Fig. I, there  is one  comment  written  by Scopoli  in pencil  referring  to  the  second  
edition  of Flora  carniolica  (Scopoli 1772), which  was obviously  added  years  later.  Comments  
on the  left  (on back side of the  previous  canvass)  correspond  to  fungi  depicted  on the  plates  on  
the  right  side. At  the  end,  index on four  pages, entitled  »Index  Iconum  Fungorum  pront  in Flora  
Carniolica  numerantur«  is added,  where  Scopoli  matches  icons  with  fungal  descriptions  in flora  
in sistematic  order  (further  mentioned  as Index). He clearly  states  which  depicted  taxon  match  
exactly  or match  only  approximatively  (huic proximus) with  desription  in flora  or even is  not  
named  in the  flora  (species aliae  in Flora  non  nominata).  Index  transcription  is added  at  the  end  of  
the gallery on page 254.
Certain  number  of figures  is marked  with  a small  piece of white  paper, glued  at  upper right  
corner  with  red  coloured  sealing  wax, on which  an unknown  ennumeration  can  be partly  seen, 
which does not correspond to any known source.

ICONES FUNGORUM CARNIOLIAE, neobjavljene podobe gliv k prvi izdaji Kranjske flore (1760)
Materials and methods
Shortly  after  the  visit  to  MHN in  1995, small  format  (Leica)  copies  of  colour  plates  were  obtained  
by the  National  and  University  Library  in Ljubljana.  From  this  source  a digitised  copy was made  
and  used as a source  for  this  publication.  It  is worth  mentioning  that  for  the  purpose  of study  of  
Scopoli's  mycological  work,  extended  field  work  in Idria's  closer  and wider  surroundings  was 
being made  during  the  years  1999 to  2011 with  special  emphasis to  the  collection  sites,  mentioned  
in Flora  explicitely  by local  name.  This work  was organised  in close  collaboration  and  support  of  
the  Idrija  Municipal  Museum. Although  the  results  of the  field  inventory  have  not  yet  been fully  
evaluated, they proved to be extremely usefull in the interpretation of the depicted fungi.
Discussion
First  of all,  it  is astonishing  to  have  in hands  oil  plates  of fungi  from  mid XVIII

 century.  At  
that  time colour  reproduction  in printing  was limited  to  hand  colorated  paper prints  of copper  
plates.  Looking  back to  these  times, Scopoli  could  not  possibly expect  that  this  paintings  could  
reach  wider  public  in foreseeable  future.  At  the  other  hand,  oil  paintings  are  costly  and  take  time.  
We can  only  admire  how  much  attention  he  devoted  to  the  preparation  of  these  depictions  of  fungi,  
which  were  clearly  particulary  close  to  him. He devoted  special  attention  to  Agarics,  as we can  
also  read  in the  closing  paragraph  for  Agaricus  on page 39 in Flora  (translated  from  latin  with  
some help of Google translate):  
»These are the Agarics,  which  I  have carefully  collected,  often  examined, and almost  all  
expressed  in vivid colors.  Before  divided  them,  I first  marvelled  at  the  incredible  quantity,  then,  
setting  aside my  doubts,  I  selected  certain  ones, examined them again, and finally  arranged  
them  in such  a way that  each  species could  be easily  recognized  by all;  there  will  still  be those  
who  reject  this  order.  But  who  could  please  all  mortals?  In the  meantime  I undertook  the  most  
numerous  and  difficult  labors  to  give a clearer  account  of  the  natural  history  of  the  Agarics,  which,  
if I had  really  accomplished,  competent  and  fair  judges would  appreciate.«  /Hi sunt  agarici,  quos 
sedulo collectos, saepius examinatos, vivis coloribus fere omnes expressos habeo. Hos antequam  
dividerem, obstupui primo incredibilem  copiam,  dein  dubiis  sepositis,  certos  elegi, denuo  
examinavi,  ac  demum ita  ordinavi,  ut  species quaelibet  ab omnibus facile  adgnosci  queat;  erunt  
tamen,  qui hunc  Ordinem  reprobabunt.  Sed quis  Mortalium  omnibus placere  potuit?  Interim  
labores  suscepi plurimos  &  difficillimos  ut  Agaricorum  historiam  clariorem  darem,  quod num  
vere praestiterim, idonei & aequi Judices aestiment./
Although  Icones  lichenum  and  Icones  fungorum  belong  to  the  same opus both  in appearance,  
design and  size, they  differ  significantly  in the  way they  were  depicted.  The lichen  portraits  on  
the  canvasses  are  depicted  exactly  in order,  described  in Flora.  The painter  had to  have type  
specimens from  Scopoli's  herbarium  collection  on  the  table  in front  of  him on  one  hand  and  Flora  
in the other in order to paint them this way.  
Portraits  of fungi were painted  as  they were collected,  they do not follow  systematical  
arrangement  but  the  time  of  collection.  On the  canvas  of  the  genus  Phallus  we can  see that  the  first  
of the  portraits  depicts  a stinkhorn  (Phallus impudicus), which  appears  arround  Idrija  from  hot  
summer  days to  early  autumn.  The second  and  the  third  figure  represents  two  species of  morels,  
Morchela conica and Morchella esculenta sensu lato,  which  appear  from  April  to  May. From  this  
we can  deduce  that  the  Icones  fungorum  were  painted  from  summer  1760 to  the  following  spring.  
As Flora  was published  between  June 15 and  July  21, 1760 (Stafleau & Cowa n, 1985), it  could  
well fit the hypothesis. Scopoli's comments could be written later.

Many fungal  species can  be recognised  from  figures  at  first  glance.  Some can  be recognised  
only  to more experienced  mycologists  being familiar  with  local  mycota.  Several  will  remain  
unnamed  and  deserve  further  study.  It  is by no means the  author's  intention  to  comment  Icones  
fungorum  in  this article  in  terms  of modern  names, but to present  the images  to the wider  
mycological  community  and  leave  commenting  to  more  experienced  taxonomists.  In this  manner  
short  comments  in the  explanatory  table  should  be understood  only  as hints  or  ideas toward  most  
appropriate answers.
