In vse, kar mu škodi, prepoveduje ljubezen do bližnjega. This means that it will also be time for SLOVENIAN SCHOOL. If you have a child in Kindergarten or older in English school, he/she is eligible to enroll in Slovenian School. Be proud of your culture and heritage! As descendants of our small Slovenian nation, let's make it possible for our children to become acquainted with their ancestral homeland and learn Slovenian. One day they will thank you for having the foresight and the interest in sending them to Slovenian school, as many already have done. We all feel the need to offer our children extra curricular activities in sports, music, dance, etc. Don't you think that it is just as important to offer them the opportunity to broaden their intellect by learning the language of their parent or grandparents? We urge you to think about it and send your children to SLOVENIAN SCHOOL! Our programs are easily comprehended. They are geared towards the ability of the children. They are made along the lines of the ones we use in English schools so that they can be easily followed and understood. Our level one program is geared towards children who do not speak any Slovenian. Accordingly, they concentrate on vocabulary building by listening to stories, tapes, videos, games and conversation, etc. - with no formal reading and writing, to prepare them for level 2 where they will be eased into reading and writing in Slovenian only when they are ready for it. Registration for SLOVENIAN SCHOOL was already on September 6, 2014 in the classroom behind the upper hall. Although our goal is to teach the children to read, write and speak Slovenian, more importantly, it is to instil into them a Slovenian identity, a feeling of love and pride towards their Slovenian roots and their cultural heritage, which your own parents worked so hard to maintain. Because our Slovenian School is a part of the Slovenian community, it also gives the children a sense of belonging. It is a place where they make lasting friendships. Our children are the guarantee for the continuance of our Slovenian identity. It is important that we work together to keep their interest alive. We, on our part, are striving to make it interesting for them. Since the summer of 2000 and generally every 4 years, we organize an excursion of Slovenia for our students, to give them the opportunity to see and experience Slovenia, first hand. The last four excursions were unforgettable for the children, a great success, so we look forward to organizing another one down the road. In turn, dear parents, you must do your part as well! Please give SLOVENIAN SCHOOL your full consideration and register your children on September 6th. If you have friends, who are of Slovenian background and this notice does not reach them, please tell them and encourage them to send their children to our school. If you are uncertain about enrolling your children in Slovenian School, please feel free to visit our school and see its set up, observe our classes and talk to the teachers. The Head-Teacher, Sandy Allen, can also be reached at (905) 548-0889. Be proud that you are Slovenian and give your children the same opportunity! We look forward to seeing you at REGISTRATION on SEPTEMBER 6, at 10:00 A.M. 23rd SUNDAY IN OT (September 7) First Reading Ezekiel 33:7-9 Like a true sentinel, Ezekiel warns against those who threaten the well-being of the community by their wrongdoing. Response: O that today you would listen to the voice of the Lord. Do not harden your hearts! Second Reading Romans 13:8-10 All the commandments are summarised in one: you must love your neighbour as yourself. Gospel Matthew 18:15-20 To correct a brother or sister, it may in the end be necessary to involve the community, but Christ himself is with that community in their deliberations. "Love is the one thing that cannot hurt your neighbour Illustration Wherever there's a gathering of people - a small gathering, like a family or a football team; or a big one, like a university or a church - there will almost inevitably be disagreements, misunderstandings and fallings-out from time to time. That they occur is no cause for alarm; what happens next may well be. On the one hand, differences of opinion or viewpoint can lead to brooding and bitterness, and in the case of nation states even to armed conflict. On the other hand, they may result in healing, in helpful discussions, in the airing of grievances. There can be little doubt which is the wise and which the foolish course of action to take. In Winston Churchill's famous quip, "to jaw-jaw is always better than to war-war". Gospel Teaching Today's readings centre on how best to address the problems that arise within the local church, in particular on the issue of brotherly or sisterly correction. This is clearly a delicate and often thankless task, and yet there are times when it has to be done. Ezekiel, whom we heard in our first reading, insists that just as a sentry is duty-bound to warn of approaching danger, so he, the prophet, must warn those who persist in wickedness of the consequence of their actions. If his language sometimes seems harsh, it's because the issue is so serious. Indeed, in some ways Ezekiel's words foreshadow Jesus' own teaching, as presented to us in today's Gospel. There he reminds us that we have a familial duty to do what we can when a brother's or sister's behaviour causes offence, especially when it is a threat to the well-being of the community. The first step is to deal with the matter privately and informally, in the hope that it will result in a peaceful settlement. It is far better to have the courage to speak with wrongdoers face to face than to gossip about them behind their back. If that fails, stage two is to get the assistance of a couple of others; it will be more difficult to reject the advice of two or three people than that of one. Finally, as a last resort, the matter may have to be brought to the community; and should wrongdoers persist in their waywardness, then they're cutting themselves off from that community. This may have to be officially acknowledged. However, excommunication should be rare, and should be used not as a punishment but rather as encouragement to the wrongdoer to return to the fold. If, as the Gospel puts it, such a person is to be treated "like a pagan or a tax collector", that does not mean that the community are to wash their hands of him or her. On the contrary, just as pa- gans and tax collectors were a special focus of Jesus' ministry, so Jesus teaches us to include them in the community's mission also. Application The second reading puts things into perspective: Paul teaches us that "Love is the one thing that cannot hurt your neighbour." Christian correction makes sense only when it is done in the spirit of love. To correct with love means that we don't set out simply to win an argument; we don't descend to sarcasm; we are deeply conscious of our own weakness and sinfulness; we do what we are called to do, aware that the Lord alone knows hearts and can change them. Loving others may be relatively easy when it's a matter of being generous and compassionate towards them. But there is another, deeper and more costly love: there may be times when we are called to practise the love that cares enough to confront, to challenge and even to oppose. Genuine love refuses to collude with wrongdoing through silence, though there may be situations where wisdom dictates that, for the time being at least, silence is the best policy. Whenever we have courage to oppose what is evil we are involved in the Church's task of binding and loosing - binding the evil forces that oppress people, loosing the bonds that prevent them from living the fullness of life in God's kingdom. The Christian is called to love enough to speak uncomfortable truths at times - but always in humility and love. The final words of today's Gospel apply not only to communal prayer but also to every honest attempt to restore peace and harmony within the community: "where two or three meet in my name", Jesus promises, "I shall be there with them."
