He subsequently went on to meet with Cardinal Secretary of State Tarcisio Bcrtonc S.D.B. The prime minister expressed the Slovenian nation’s recognition for the concern shown it by the Holy See ever since its independence, and he invited the Holy Father to visit Slovenia in 2009, for the occasion of the Year of Young People, and for the closure of the National Eucharist Congress. Prime Minister Jansa also outlined the priorities and principal initiatives for the forthcoming six-month Slovenian presidency of the European Union, from January to June, 2008. In this context, the Cardinal Secretary of State expressed his hope that the six-month Slovenian presidency may bring positive results and, in particular, peace and stability in the region of southeastern Europe. Finally, a number of bilateral questions were addressed, such as the process of restoring ecclesiastical property nationalized under the communist regime, and the prospects for creating a military ordinariate. Slovenians Elect Turk President Ljubljana, Nov. 11 - Slovenian voters have, by an overwhelming majority, olected the former senior UN diplomat Dr. Danilo Turk the new president of Slovenia. Tiirk, 55, received more than two-thirds of the vote against the EU parliamentarian Loj-2e Peterle in Sunday’s run-oH for the largely ceremonial Post. For Dr. Tiirk the voters avc made it clear they want a new course for Slovenia, while his success is the result of the efforts of all those involved in his campaign. In his acceptance speech on Sunday, Tiirk said he would work to be a uniter. Peterle conceded to Dr. Tiirk immediately after learning of the results of the exit polls, which gave Turk nearly 70% of the vote. Representatives from the City of Cleveland, Cleveland’s Foreign Consular Corps as well as many people from the American Slovenian community were entertained by Cleveland musicians Stan Mejac and Joe Štepec. In his remarks Dr. Žigon mentioned the upcoming Slovenian presidency to the European Union in 2008 and recapped many of the social and cultural projects handled by the consulate office in Cleveland. Attendees were treated to the opening of the Move Movement art exhibit which will be on display in the Galleria until Dec. 30. The exhibit is a collection of artwork of 24 internationally renowned Slovenian painters, sculptors, graphic artists and photographers, all members of the Fine Arts Society of Ljubljana. This remarkable display of contemporary fine art is a unique opportunity for the American public to gain insight to several unique Slovenian art forms. -Phil Hrvatin St. Nicholas Special to Slovenians Historically St. Nicholas was a Bishop in the City of Smyrna in Asia Minor in the Fourth Century. Legend tells how he helped three young maidens, whose poor father could not afford dowries, by throwing money through the window into the house during the night. He was especially good to the youngsters and known for his gifts to the children. Slovenians have a special admiration for good old St. Nicholas or “Sveti Miklavž” and so he became one of the most popular saints. He is traditionally pictured dressed as a Bishop. In one hand is a Bishop’s Cane, in the other Golden Apples. This symbolizes the book of all the names of children who have been good throughout the whole year, and eligible for gifts. On St. Nicholas Eve, children place containers such as straw baskets, plates, and even boots to hold the gifts he brings. But, before his arrival, Lucifer and his company of devils go from house to house rattling chains and making other horrible sounds scaring the children who were bad during the year. Parents told the children for days before St. Nicholas’ arrival to be good or else the devils would take them away. To equalize the effect of their medieval devilish appearance, there are always angels with St. Nicholas. They are his helpers and reassure the children that everything is all right. Meanwhile, the tradition of celebrating St. Nicholas Day is also popular with the Greater Cleveland Slovenian Community. The pupils of both the Slovenian parish schools - St. Vitus and St. Mary usually present a short play with dancing and music in Slovenian preceding his arrival. And so, this centuries-old tradition, with its origin in medieval passion plays, is still alive in American, among children of the Slovenian community. --August B. No. 30 December 6, 2007 My Son Mike’ by RUDY FLIS You have read about my daughters in past articles, but I can’t remember the last time I mentioned one of my sons. What you are about to read is about my eldest son, Mike’s 50th birthday party, put on by his sister Mary, the sister God blessed our family with while her 2'/2-year-old brother Mike prayed fervently for a dog. Now he tells his sister God did grant his wish. Present at the birthday party were Mike’s three closest friends, who shared a common bond, “Love of cars.” They were with their wives. Mike’s buddies’ wives listened in disbelief as he told of his visits to car dealerships to talk with salesmen who were not busy and had enough time to tell of a car’s features. If Mike got lucky, the salesman would let him sit in a sports car or a Ford Mustang before he got scooted out of the showroom. One wife, in disbelief asked, “Why would you want to “just sit in a car?” Read on. When Mike was a high school senior, and his jalopy was kaput for a day or two, he jumped on his old bike and headed to a sports car dealership and hid his bike by the back of the building so it would be out of sight as he spoke with the salesman about one or two cars on the floor. After the salesman answered his questions, he Thirty-five is when you finally get your head together and your body starts falling apart. --Bob Mills 50th Birthday asked Mike, “By the way isn’t that your bike parked behind our building?” Then he said to Mike, “Go ahead and sit in the car for a few minutes,” which lit up a young car enthusiast’s day like you wouldn’t believe. Mike was bom the same year the Ford Edsel, thus his love of the Ford Edsel, of which he has two, and the reason he spent many, many of his free hours combing junkyards throughout this part of Ohio, for spare parts for his Edsel. He and his friends had an abundance of laughs as Mike related story after story about experiences he had as he pursued his first love, the automobile. Mike did save business cards from salesmen that spent time with him in their showrooms, and when he bought his Mustang, it was from one of them. When Mike sold the Mustang GT, I used a VCR camcorder to get the last farewell as he pulled away from our home for the last time in his Mustang GT. When he went to look at the last farewell later, it had been replaced by pictures of my daughter spreading strudel dough across the table. Don’t know how that happened, and I thought Mike might not speak with me ever again. Mike’s love with cars did not prevent him from a family as he is blessed with a wife and three children, none of whom share his love of cars. - Happy 50th, Mike. Cleveland Slovenian Skiers & Boarders Cleveland Slovenian Ski Club is entering its second season of existence. This year we are organizing two bus trips to the skiing community. The first trip is a one day ski trip to Holiday Valley, in Elicottville, NY on Saturday, January 12, 2008. Cost is $75.00 which includes round trip deluxe motor coach to Holiday Valley and an 8-hour full access lift pass. The cost for children between ages of 6 - 11 is $65.00. Non-skiers/non-boarders, and all children 5 and under, have the option of paying $35.00 for round trip bus fare only. Children 5 and under ski for free. Ski/board rentals are available at Holiday Valley for an additional charge. (Cost of ski rental starts at $22 for adults, $ 18 for ages 11 and under. Cost of a snow board rental is $28 for adults and $24 for ages 11 and under.) Bus departs at 6 a.m. from the Lakeland Community College parking lot near 306 in Mentor, OH. On Nov. 7 the members of St. Anne’s Lodge enjoyed the pastry by Anne Tomsick, date and nut cake and the extra treat (nut horns) given to our members by Stefani Zamlen who resides in the St. Vitus Village where we hold our monthly meetings. All the pastry was thoroughly enjoyed by all the members. It was the icing on the meeting. Nov. 6 Jimmy Kozel celebrated his day. Congrats from family and all his friends. I was one of a group at the Slovene Home for the Aged assisting Jean Križman in her Christmas tree mailing. We had a fun group, stuffing, scaling and labeling envelopes. I am a poll worker for many years and this election all the Paper work was “something elsc.” Need I say more? This past month mother and son passed away, Jolan and Tony Baznik. I missed the Thanksgiving polka affair at the Marriott downtown due to illness, but I did attend the Awards program on Saturday, which was so wonderful. It was the greatest I’ve seen in quite a few years. The awards affair was spectacular. The house polka band was heard from tree tops to all house tops in the Euclid area. A very enthusiastic and appreciative audience from coast to coast after their weekend at the Marriott, which I’m sure they enjoyed all the award recipients who were very gracious and happy to receive their awards and accolades. The #1 song “Roses of Love,” was very delightful as sung by Cecilia Dolgan and Christine Hibbs. The posthumously award to Gaylord Klančnik was very heartwarming. His wife and children accepted the award. So many talented musicians have come and gone, but they will not be forgotten. Their music and talent will go on forever. God be with Gaylord. Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Dick Flaisman, presented by Jack Flaisman. Ray Somich, Master of Ceremonies, with special guest Paul Wilcox, past host of Polka Varieties, came all the way from Florida for this occasion. The Friends of the Slovenian Home on St. Clair had their annual brunch on Sunday, Nov. 25, and it was excellent. As you approached the hall, the aroma was very inviting. There was a great variety of food. Mmm good. Tony Hiti gave a visual and narration on the progress of the museum and parking lot. The donations are very gratifying. All my love and prayers. —Emilee XOX Zarja Concert a Success As I begin this article, looking out to our backyard, I see roses in bloom, green grass, trees still with a lot of leaves, and a temperature in the mid-50s. This is not normal for the second week of November, but as the old adage says, “Stick around, it’ll change.” Well, to get to the point, Zarja’s concert performance on Oct. 28lh was a success despite the fact there were three other Slovenian functions on the same date. Due to illness, my wife and I could not attend, but the performance was well received by approximately 200 persons in attendance. The en- tire Zaija Chorus has a good feeling, to know their rehearsals, “many rehearsals” were appreciated. The group will meet for our Annual Meeting in January, then will take a little time off, until we start rehearsals for our Saturday, April 26 performance. So, until we meet again, Zaija members wish a Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous Holiday season to all. Edward Pevec.____________________________________ On a sunny but cool autumn day, Nov. 18, approximately 400 people attended Sunday Mass to officially mark the 75lh Diamond Anniversary Observance for the completion and dedication of St. Vitus Church on Lausche Avenue in Cleveland. Retired Auxiliary Bishop A. Edward Pevec, Ph.D., former pastor of St. Vitus was the main celebrant. The Mass was con-celebrated with Father Joseph P. Boznar, pastor, and Father Victor Cimperman, retired and residing at St. Vitus Village. In his homily, Bishop Pevec stated that “Such names as Fathers Hribar Ponikvar and Baznik link the zealous and energetic Father Boznar to a marvelous era that witnessed a deep faith of Slovenian parishioners in the face of many trials, hardships, and poverty. It wasn’t easy in those early days and it isn’t easy these days. So often, witnessing to what we believe demands courage and sacrifice.” Current St. Vitus Church was officially completed and dedicated on Nov. 20, 1932 with Father Bartholomew J. Ponikvar as pastor. At the conclusion of Mass, an estimated 300 parish volunteers and benefactors converged on the parish auditorium to enjoy fellowship and a well prepared brunch under the direction of Joe Tavčar and his work crew. Fr. Cimperman began the proceedings with an opening invocation. the brunch consisted of fresh fruit, orange juice and coffee, warm muffins and croissants, followed by sausage and ham, Slovenian style potatoes, and scrambled eggs. The meal was served within 15-to-20 minutes. Mary Petelin, chairperson, pastoral council, was then requested to the podium and she gave a general summary of the direction of the parish. She noted that the continuing development of spirituality and the current ongoing cluster plan process that will affect all parishes in the diocese of Cleveland were the two primary tasks of the pastoral council. She requested the continuing prayers and support of the parishioners and not to fear the present or future. Stane Kuhar then gave a short summary of the work of the parish finance council. He noted that the annual parish financial statement had been completed with appropriate reviews by parish finance and pastoral councils as well as an approved review by the finance office of the diocese of Cleveland. This statement will now be ready for mailing in a summary format to all registered parishioners and benefactors. Mr. Kuhar thanked those in attendance for their personal commitment and material support to continue the work of the parish into the future as has been the case for 114 uninterrupted years. Fr. Boznar was then called to the podium. He spoke of his gratitude to those in attendance as well as those who could not attend, for the continuing prayers, personal commitments and sacrifices of so many parishioners and benefactors who have enabled the parish to continue to do good work in the immediate and far-reaching community. Fr. Boznar noted that the clergy continually needs to know that the work performed by the many priests, religious, and lay workers is not performed in isolation and that having so many people willing to support his ministry was very reassuring to him. Fr. Boznar then moved toward recognizing the many volunteers who throughout the course of the year give their time for the betterment and benefit of the parish; and by extension the broader community in northeast Ohio. He noted that volunteers arc the heart and soul of a parish. He stated that no amount of money or material support could ever replace the spirit of cooperation and sense of community that volunteers bring and provide. The first honoree to be called forward was Marija Cugelj. Mrs. Cugclj has been long associated with St. Vitus Parish through her work in the Altar and Rosary Society, Lira Choir, benefit dinners, annual parish summer and fall festivals and picnics, baking of krofe, and so many other parish events. Due to a slight illness, Mrs. Cugelj was not able to be present. Maria Hebcbrand, her daughter, accepted the award on her behalf. The second honoree called forward was Bernadette Ovsenik. Bernie has for the past two decades been the primary force toward decorating the Nativity Creche and Nativity scenery with family and friends, as well as at Easter time. She has also served as an officer on the parent board of the parish Slovenian Language School, served on the parish pastoral council, volunteered at annual parish summer and fall festivals and summer parish picnics, and was for many years heavily involved in the Slovenian dance group Kres. The third individual honored was David Fink. David has been the longest serving reader/lcctor/commentator of the parish. He is also engaged in this work during Holy Week and willingly serves the parish in other capacities as requested. Due to his work schedule at a local hospital, David was not present, but Fr. Boznar said he will give this award to David at a 4 p.m. Saturday Mass. The fourth person called forward was Mario Percic. When Mario retired approximately 11 years ago from a local health care institution, he came to the parish house and made known to Fr. Boznar that he would be willing and able to serve the parish as a volunteer for seniors and the homebound. In addition to his work in Senior Ministry at the parish, Mario has volunteered through the parish St. Vincent de Paul Society, been a member of the Legion of Mary, a volunteer at parish summer and fall festivals as well as the annual parish picnics, served as a volunteer at the parish Slovenian Language School when his children were students there, and in the general community, and is treasurer of Slovenska Pristava. During the building process of St. Vitus Village he was a key volunteer, coming once or twice a week for over a year with other volunteers, to ensure the integrity of supplies and other matters necessary to successfully complete the building of St. Vitus Village. The brunch was concluded with closing remarks and benediction by Auxiliary Bishop A. Edward Pcvec. A personal note of thanks to the volunteers who helped set-up the previous day as well as those who helped clean-up after the brunch. The event concluded around 2 p.m. As a gift from unknown sources, our Cleveland Browns football team came back in a miraculous manner and beat the Baltimore Ravens in overtime; a nice way to end the day. Kennick 5 July 28, 1896-Dec. 4,1983 It has been 24 years since our father died. We would like to share with you some things about him. William Joseph Kennick was born in Cleveland on July 28, 1896, and was raised on East 63rd Street. He was a very honest boy, and also a very intelligent, studious, diligent, and inquisitive boy. He studied hard, most often in the kitchen with poor lighting and full of people. After graduating from St. Vitus School, he was the first from the neighborhood to find his way to East High School. He then went on to the University of Michigan, Harvard Law School, and Ohio State University, earning his B.A., M.A., and LL.B. degrees. It appears he was the first from the neighborhood to earn a law degree, although soon after, several of his friends did the same. He experienced that the then recent 1890s immigrant status of the Slovenians put them at a disadvantage in the broader society and he couldn’t bear to see anyone from the Slovenian neighborhood hoodwinked or taken advantage of in any way. One of the reasons that he went to law school was to be in a position to better “protect the interests of the Slovenians,” which he then did in a number of ways. He became a lawyer and economist, and was a 23rd Ward Councilman. At the time of the East Ohio Gas Company fire in October of 1944, his own house and most of the houses on and around East 63 rd Street were burned to the ground. The fourth East Ohio Gas Company gas tank had been constructed of different materials and in a different shape than the previous three, and it was the first tank to go, spewing its destruction, flames everywhere, destroying homes and neighborhood, injuring many and killing people. Following the fire William Kcnnick felt many Slovenians were not adequately compensated for the damages they had suffered, and he helped a number of people successfully increase their claims. The video of the fire put out by the East Ohio Gas Company talks eloquently about how some of the children of the employees of the company received scholarships to college. If you listen to and study that video carefully, it appears that none of the children receiving scholarships for college were Slovenian, although it is the Slovenians who had endured the greatest losses of every kind. A further indignity occurred when the American Red Cross, which had given people blankets and other items immediately following the fire, sent bills to a number of people some months later for the items given. Our father represented these people, making the Red Cross drop these inappropriate charges. Always mindful of the Slovenians as a group, William J. Kennick worked to have the nationality groups of Cleveland fairly represented as school teachers in their own ethnic districts, as well as across other school districts. He also worked toward the achievement of fair disclosure and open record laws in employment practice, so that a job applicant would have access to what was written in his or her records. He worked hard and successfully represented two claimants who were unfairly terminated from employment in the steel mill and another company, at the beginning of what now appears to be a major trend in which companies dump employees in their later employment years so as not to have to pay pension and other retirement costs. William Joseph Kennick loved books. He had a lot of knowledge. Part of his career involved university teaching. He also had a job in the 1950s as an attorney for the State of Ohio Unemployment Bureau during the Lausche administration. Now more than a century after the Slovenian immigration to the United States, we are very proud and strengthened by the legacy of our father. William Joseph Kennick was a very intelligent, honest, preserving, and prescient person who was not easily deterred, knew right from wrong, and lived accordingly. He loved his Slovenian heritage. But he was also the consummate patriot, and he loved the United States. (Photo by PHIL HRVATIN) Next CityMusic Concert Dec. 12 CityMusic Cleveland, a quality 32 piece chamber orchestra performing in northeast Ohio, will have the second of four concerts for its 2007-2008 season from Dec. 11-16 in the Greater Cleveland area. The second concert is titled, “Fire and Ice.” CityMusic Cleveland will perform in St. Vitus Church, 6029 Lausche Avenue, Cleveland on Dec. 12 at 7 p m. the guest conductor will be Julian Kuerti with harp soloist Megan Levin. The series of four concerts is part of a series of events to highlight the Diamond Jubilee of the completion and dedication of St. Vitus Church. Julian Kuerti was appointed assistant conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra by James Levine in February. He has conducted extensively in Europe, North and South America, performing with orchestras as the Toronto Symphony, National Symphony Orchestra Washington, Berliner Symphoniker, and the Budapest Festival Orchestra. For Greater Cleveland audiences, Mr. Kuerti’s grandfather and parents lived in the Hungarian community of Cleveland. His father was the renowned pianist Anton Kuerti. Julian began his conducting studies in 2000 at the University of Toronto when he was accepted as a student at the Pierre Monteux School for Conductors in Maine. In 2001 Mr. Kuerti won the position of Apprentice Conductor with Boris Brott and Canada’s National Academy Orchestra. After a year as assistant conductor with Canada’s foremost training orchestra, Julian moved to Germany to complete his education. He finished his studies in 2005 with Lutz Kohler at the University of the Arts Berlin. There will be no admission charge for the Dec. 12 concert at St. Vitus but free-will offerings will be accepted. After the concert, light food and refreshments will be provided in the parish auditorium. Secured parking will be available. Peter is the son of Alex and Fran Krek and grandson of the late Dr. Miha Krek, who served as Royal Deputy Prime Minister of the Yugoslav Government in London. Dr. Miha Krek continued working on behalf of the Slovenian people whenever he could and was instrumental in the resettlement of refugees. Much of the city of Cleveland and the surrounding areas were covered and criteria narrowed down to finding something within reasonable distance of the foundry Louie worked at, Hill Acme Foundry on W. 65th near Lake Erie. They eventually connected with Conrad Realty on the west side of Cleveland and Mr. Conrad took it upon himself to overcome all the issues mentioned. After a few more weeks of looking at Mr. Conrad’s houses he came up with the answer: two houses on one lot, both of which needed repair and remodeling, in the Old Brooklyn neighborhood southwest of downtown Cleveland, near the upcoming city of Parma. In order to finance the new house Mr. Conrad worked out a deal with a bank he had an interest in and Louie and Rose were required to buy about $400 worth of stock in the bank. Although this transaction sounds a little shady it really wasn’t because everyone involved was dealing honestly. In fact, eight or ten years later the bank was sold and Louie and Rose doubled their investment. So in June of 1951 Louie and Rose and son Lou... and Vi and Laddie and their two children, Ronnie and Eileen moved to 3815 and 3817 Schiller Avenue, after 25 years of living at 6205 Whittier Avenue. Louie still had to take two buses to get to work, but from a different direction. As the 1950s began, so did living on Schiller Ave. Fortunately, Louie enjoyed working on their “new” house(s). There was a lot of work to do. In fact, from the time they moved into the house until they left it, there was always another project going on. Louie’s family lived in the front house at 3815 Schiller, and Vi’s family lived in the back house at 3817. The two houses were offset (not in line with each other) so they both faced the street. At first most of Louie’s efforts went into the front house because that’s where he lived and it was easy to pick up and leave off on a project as time permitted. The house was well built out of clay tile covered with stucco on the lower half and wood frame covered with shingles on the top half. The stucco cracked and needed substantial repair because it pealed off the clay tile. The roof shingles were old and needed to be replaced. 3815 Schiller as the oldest house in the neighborhood and had been built before electric lighting was available. It had gas lines in the walls where gas lighting had existed and the overhead light fixtures which were added in many of the rooms had no light switches, just pull chains. Gas lines had to be removed and light switches installed. The furnace was an old coal furnace that had been converted to a gas burner with heating ducts to the first floor only. A new furnace and second floor heating ducts needed to be installed. Drain tiles around the house were faulty and whenever it rained the basement got wet. This led to the need to repair the outer drain tiles and install additional drain tiles in the basement floor. The basement was limited in size because large ledges around the inside perimeter were left in place when the house was built. Louie removed the ledges and built new footings and concrete block walls under the existing footings to support the house. Even the basement stairway needed substantial work since it was never completed and consisted of exposed wall studs. The entire house required redecorating and much of that work was left to Rose and son Lou. The walls had wallpaper that needed to be removed before painting could be done. The woodwork was a very dark stain and needed to be painted white. The floors needed to be re-sanded and varnished. The back porch had no roof which allowed the flooring to rot because of bad weather. Louie tried repairing it but found that to be an endless attempt, so he tore down the entire porch, poured new footings and built an enclosed porch with windows all around and a roof over the top. Oh yes, although the front porch had a roof, the floor had been neglected for such a long time that the middle of it was deteriorating, so Louie went ahead and replaced the entire porch floor. There was a double garage behind 3815 and next to 3817. This garage was solidly built out of the same clay tile as the houses, but that’s where the stability ended. The roof needed to be replaced and the dirt floor needed concrete, all of which Louie accomplished within the first two years of being there. The drive was concrete from the street to the back of 3815 but gravel beyond that. Of course, the gravel was well buried into the ground which left a dirt drive in front of, and inside the garage. Louie got a couple of Italian fellows he worked with to come over and lay a concrete drive one weekend. He himself laid the concrete floor in the garage, with the help of Rose, Louie, and Mrs. Stone from next door. 3817 Schiller, where Vi and her family lived needed a lot of work also. It had been a small bam converted to living quarters. It, too, was built out of clay tile but covered entirely with shingles. Like 3815, it also needed a new roof, and both houses required a coat of paint. Having been a converted bam, 3817 had low ceilings and not much living space. The lower floor had a living room across the front and a kitchen/dining area across the back. The second floor had four bedrooms and no closets. The two bedrooms across the back of the house were intended to be closets since they were narrow and under the roof with low angular ceilings. The two front bedrooms also had angular ceilings but they had separate dormers raising up the center of each room. The basement was very small but large enough to hold a furnace and hot water heater. The ceiling beams in the basement were sufficient to hold up the floor above but looked like they had been literally broken off to fit the basement. There was a small, drafty enclosed back porch off the kitchen that was used to store a few things. In order to give Vi a laundry room Louie tore off the front end of this porch and extended it forward, insulating and finishing it into a nice little room with a space heater. He did a remarkable job with this in that it ended up looking just like another part of the house. Slovenia, an Alpine nation of 2 million that joined the EU in 2004, had an unemployment rate in September of 7.2 percent, the lowest since the country gained in-j dependence in 1991. The government’s Institute for Macroeconomic Analysis and Development said in October that, “Among those who found work in the nine-months of 2007, the number of people with lower education was higher than last year.” The program, financed by the European Social Fund and the Slovenian government, is intended to promote entrepreneurship and help people and businesses adapt to the changing economy in the period 2007-2013. (Photo bv Jim Debevec) ADVENT Advent is a holy time, the time of concentration, meditation and preparation for the birth of Christ. The activities which disturb the concentration ceased in Slovenia at Advent. There were times when marriages were not celebrated and some people abstained from food. In church a special morning Mass was celebrated named Zomice (Svita nice) the Early Mass. Families gathered together to pray the Joyous part of the Rosary and to sing the Advent songs especially Vi Oblaki (You, the Clouds) by Janez Traven, Kedaj Zveličar Prišel Bos (When Are You Coming, Savior?) by Angelik Hribar, etc. Slovenians spent Advent in preparing for Christmas and collecting materials for making the Nativity set. In Slovenian churches and in private homes the Advent Wreath is quite new and in the last few decades prepared with greenery and candles. ST. NICHOLAS On the Eve of St. Nicholas (6th December), the children were all well behaved, frightened by the visit of Miklavž (St. Nicholas) and his companion angels and the hudiči (devils). At first, the bells are heard from the road, then the ringing of chains are heard. Children keep close to their mothers. Their fathers usually wait at the door. The angels carry a big book with the names of well-behaved children, and also those who were naughty. The angels carry the presents and the devils jump and hop around the house. Miklavž is dressed in a long coat (bishop’s coat), has a bishop’s hat on his head, white gloves and in his left hand is a long, gilded bishop’s stick. From the book he reads the names of the children who were good and praises them while naughty ones are told to be better. The children are asked questions from the Catechism and to say prayers. For the diligent children there are usually presents such as walnuts, biscuits (in the shape of angels and devils) or similar, but for the naughty there is only Miklavževa siba (a stick), often decorated with ribbon. Sometimes devils put naughty children into a basket and carry them for a while. STATUE OF MARY A very old custom is also known in Slovenia as Marijo Nosijo (carrying of a statue of Mary). The custom reminds us of the travels of the pregnant Mary and Joseph, combined with the celebration of the Nine Days of Christmas. The statue of Mary is spent each night with a different family, being honored each evening with the home devotions (praying of the Rosary, litanies, and singing of hymns). JASLICE Every Slovenian home had a special place in the house where the cross was put throughout the year. In the month of May the statue of Mary was put in that special place and at Christmas this was also the site for jaslice. In some parts of Slovenia the wheat is sown in a small dish and put in the special jaslice place. Throughout Advent the moss, bark, small pretty stones, twigs and branches of fir trees are gathered, followed by the making of the simple stable with a straw covered roof, painting of the figures of Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, together with shepherds, oxen and donkeys, sheep, shepherds, dogs, camels and the Three Kings. The first jaslice was prepared by Jesuits in 1560 at Coimbra (Portugal). The first church in Slovenia to have jaslice was St. Jakob in Ljubljana in 1644, and the chronicle describes the figures as being very tall. In later years the figures were painted on boards or were made of paper. Maksim Gaspari: jaslice (Nativity set) The first written account of jaslice by A. Praprotnik in a private home comes from 1848. He states that Slovenians put jaslice in a triangular form in a comer of the house, with the town of Bethlehem on a little hill, and below the stable STALICA. The figures of Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus are in the Slovenian nativity set placed in the stable and not in the caves as in most countries. The figures were sometimes made of wood, wax or paper, sometimes painted pottery. The important part of Slovenian jaslice is the linen cloth (sometimes molded from wood and hand painted). There is no home in Slovenia without jaslice and the Slovenians living in other countries still keep the tradition very much alive. Under the Christmas tree today in Slovenian homes is placed the jaslice, prepared on Christmas eve. In Slovenia a small fir tree was hung in the BOHKOV KOT (God’s little comer) of every house. The tree was not decorated, and neither was the small fir tree that was sometimes put on a fence. The fir tree was named KRISPAN. The Božično drevesce (the Christmas tree) was unknown in Slovenia until the First World War. CHRISTMAS EVE Preparations for Christmas Eve continue with the cleaning of the house and the surroundings. Christmas Eve has a different name according to the region of Slovenia. Special cake (or more cakes) BOŽIČNIK are baked, also called POPPRTNIK. The Christmas cake was put on a table, covered with a white cloth and the family gathered for meals at another, less prominent place. At the Morning Mass people collected blessed water to take home for the evening blessing of their homes at the time of the Three Holy Evenings (Christmas Eve, New Years Eve, and before the Feast of the Epiphany). The table with Božičnik was blessed and not to be touched or used until the Feast of the Epiphany. The first Holy Evening -Christmas Eve begins at dusk. The bells begin to ring. In the homes the blessing of the house and surrounding buildings with holy water begins, followed by incense burning. The whole family follows praying on the way. After the blessing, the family sits at the table for a simple meal. Waiting for Christ’s birth follows with the singing of songs, Christmas carols and readings from the bible. MIDNIGHT MASS-POLNOCNICA The whole family usually goes to Midnight Mass except one member who stays as a guardian of the house. The bells toll and the church is well lit in the wintry night. Many Christmas songs are sung. In Slovenia more than 80 Christmas songs are known, most of them unique. After the return from Mass the family has a warm meal, most of the time KOLINE, the black pudding sausages are served. There were no presents on Christmas Eve in Slovenia, except sometimes an orange for the whole family, walnuts and hazelnuts or dried apples. Some Slovenian Christmas songs - carols - date back to the 15lh century, with the ENO DETE JE ROJENO (The One Baby is Bom) being the oldest known Slovenian Christmas song. The later traditional Slovenian Christmas carols are sung every Christmas, CHRISTMAS DAY Christmas Day is the holiest day of the year and people do not work around their homes. In some regions of Slovenia, visitors on Christmas Day means a bad omen. The Christmas Day is for the family. Wishing each other Merry Christmas was done after Mass, and then people went to their homes, to celebrate the Birth of Jesus in their hearts and welcome Him into their families. People never went visiting oh Christmas Day, not even neighbors. There was a celebration meal at noon. V ta namen je bila proti koncu novembra organizirana konferenca v mestu Annapolisu, na kateri je bilo prisotnih predstavnikov 44 držav sveta. Med povabljenimi je bila tudi Slovenija, to izrecno zato, ker bo s 1. januarjem prevzela predsedovanju Evropski uniji. Slovenijo je predstavljal zunanji minister Dimitrij Rupel, ki je že poglavitno govoril v imenu EU, čeprav še neuradno. Rupel je dejal, da prevladuje v EU veselje, da bo proces iskanje miru med poglavitnimi mednarodnimi točkami za časa prve polovice 2008 in da bo EU storila vse, kar zmore, v tem iskanju. Cilj je doseči obsežno soglasje o miru na Srednjem vzhodu, v prvi vrsti s kompromisno in vsestransko enakopravno rešitvijo izraelsko-pa-lestinskega vprašanja. Po udeležbi v Annapolisu se je Rupel vrnil v Evropo, kjer je spremljal premiera Janeza Janše na uradnem obisku Rima in Vatikana. Kot predsednica Evropske unije bo Slovenija v njenem imenu angažirana v reševanju kosovskega problema Sredi novembra je premier Janez Janša dal daljši intervju uglednemu in vplivnemu mednarodnemu listu Financial Times. Beseda je tekla predvsem o perečem problemu statusa pokrajine Kosovo. Združeni narodi so dali Beogradu in Prištini, kosovski prestolnici, do 10. decembra, da dosežeta kompromisno rešitev glede dokončnega statusa province. Težava je v tem, da albanska večina na Kosovu oz. njeno vodstvo želi neodvisnost od Srbije, to pa je nesprejemljivo za srbsko vodstvo in ni pričakovati, da bo omenjeni kompromis dosežen. To bo huda ovira za ZN, kajti je Rusija že dala vedeti, da bo vetirala vsakršno akcijo Varnostnega sveta ZN, ki bi dal Kosovu status neodvisnosti, celotne ali pogojne. Spričo tega je Janša dejal, da bo EU zavzela vodilno vlogo v reševanju Kosova in to s tem, da bo podprla pogojno neodvisnost za Kosovo, a le pod pogojem, da bo albanska večina v provinci sprejela določeno mednarodno nadzorstvo in tudi garancije pravic srbske manjšine. Zadeva Kosovo je v prvi vrsti problem Evrope oz. EU, manj pa Združenih narodov, je poudaril Janša, priznal pa je, da bo pot težka. Na kongresu Slovenske ljudske stranke izvolili novega predsednika: Bojana Šrota Na programskem in volilnem kongresu Slovenske ljudske stranke, ki je bil 17. novembra, je prišlo do zamenjave na vrhu SLS. Dosedanji večletni predsednik stranke Janez Podobnik ni kandidiral za ponovno izvolitev, namesto njega je bil izvoljen celjski župan Bojan Šrot. Znano je sicer, da je bil Podobnik pod močnim Šrotovim pritiskom in to zaradi nazadovanje stranke v zadnjih letih. Šrot je tudi bil edini kandidat, zanj je glasovalo 211 od vseh skupaj 212 delegatov kongresa. Protesti zaradi nazadovanja plač v času rastoče inflacije Sredi novembra je bil v Ljubljani velik protest, ko so delavci od svojih delodajalcev zahtevali zvišanje plač. Nekateri analitiki so bili mnenja, da so protesti naperjeni proti Janševi vladi, vendar je prevladovalo mnenje, da so bili delavci jezni predvsem nad delodajalci. Svojo vlogo igra tudi vedno močnejši evro in rastoča inflacija, dejstvo pa je, da Slovenija v istem času dosega najvišjo gospodarsko rast v svoji zgodovini. Premier Janša je dejal, da takšne demonstracije ne bodo imele učinka in se nobeno podjetje ne bo ustrašilo. Cilj delavcev naj bi bila specifična podjetja, zoper katera bi imeli konkretne zahteve, torej klasični dvoboj delavci-delodajalci na lokalni ravni. JANŠEVA VLADA DOBILA ZAUPNICO V PARLAMENTU - Med posledicami predsedniških volitev II. novembra, na katerih je bil izvoljen za naslednika sedanjega predsednika Slovenije Janeza Drnovška 55-letni dr. Danilo Turk, predstavnika leve opcije, je bil naval napadov na vlado Janeza Janše. Tako je Janša sam omenil •nežnost odstopa svoje vlade, kar bi pa bilo težko pričakovati tik pred slovenskim Predsedovanjem Evropski unji. Janša je dal pobudo za glasovanje o svoji vladi v Parlamentu, o zaupnici pač. Sledila je precej burna debata, med katero je premier sam govoril (foto zgoraj), glasovanje pa je pokazalo, da je vladna koalicya še trdna in da bo po vsej verjetnosti ostala na oblasti do prihodnjih parlamentarnih volitev, ki bodo •norale biti po ustavi najkasneje jeseni 2008. Dovolite, da se tudi tokrat, že tretjič, ob koncu koledarskega leta in ob bližajočih se praznikih obrnem na vas s krajšim razmišljanjem in “poročilom o delu”. Slovenija bo 26. decembra praznovala že 17. rojstni dan, oziroma dan, na katerega so bili leta 1990 javno objavljeni uradni izidi plebiscita o samostojnosti Slovenije. Rojakinje in rojaki v domovini so takrat dali zeleno luč slovenski oblasti za pripravo vsega potrebnega za popolno politično osamosvojitev, ki smo jo dočakali šest mesecev pozneje, 25. junija 1991. Ker je bila za tak zgodovinski podvig potrebna izjemna enotnost slovenskega naroda, se ta dan imenuje Dan samostojnosti in enotnosti Republike Slovenije. Vse naše takratno početje bi ne imelo pravega smisla in učinka, če prizadevanjem za samostojnost ne bi sledilo tudi mednarodno priznanje. Tega smo dočakali večinoma v začetku leta 1992 in pri odločitvi posamičnih držav za priznanje je veliko vlogo igralo tudi javno mnenje. Pri prepričevanju vodstva države, naj prizna obstoj Slovenije, ste blesteli rojaki v tujini. Za to se vam še enkrat zahvaljujem - in se vam bom tudi v prihodnje, saj besed zahvale za tako veliko podporo ni nikoli preveč. Po vstopu na mednarodna politična tla se je pot Slovenije dvigala strmo navzgor in v letu 2008 vstopamo kot enakopravni člani Nata, Evropske unije in Schengen-skega viznega sporazuma. Še več, Slovenija je kot 13. država po vrsti in prva od novih članic EU prevzela eno najmočnejših denarnih valut na svetu - Evro, v prvi polovici prihodnjega leta pa bo (spet kot prva od novink) predsedovala EU. To pomeni, da bo predstavljala in usklajevala politiko skoraj 500 milijonov Evropejcev, ki živijo v 27 državah in govorijo vsaj 22 različnih jezikov. Kar je velika odgovornost, pa tudi zgodovinska priložnost za dvig ugleda v mednarodni skupnosti. ❖ Izjemno razgibano dogajanje v domovini se odraža tudi pri delu Generalnega konzulata v Clevelandu. V oktobru in novembru smo organizirali volitve predsednika Slovenije - volilna udeležba je bila med največjimi zunaj meja Slovenije, saj je v prvem krogu volilo 137, v drugem pa 141 volilk in volilcev. Večina clevelandskih volilcev je sicer glasovala za Lojzeta Peterleta, vendar pa je tega premagal Danilo Turk, ki se bo v predsedniško pisarno vselil 23. decembra letos. Zelo se je povečalo povpraševanje v zvezi z odškodninami za povojno begunstvo in poboje, zato smo organizirali posvet, ki se ga je v Clevelandu udeležilo okoli 80, v Le-montu (Chicago) pa okoli 35 ljudi. Dobro obiskan je bil tudi posvet, na katerem sem pojasnjeval, kako naj se organizacije prijavijo za sredstva Urada Vlade RS za Slovence po svetu. Večkrat sem obiskal ameriške ustanove, diplomatske kolege iz drugih držav in seveda slovenske rojake v Chicagu in Le-montu ter v nekaterih drugih zveznih državah, ki spadajo pod pristojnost GK Cleveland. Nasploh se je povečalo število konzularnih opravil. Tako smo letos (do 26. novembra) zabeležili skupno okoli 2.000 različnih opravil, od tega najmanj 140 samo v zvezi z odškodninami (mnogo telefonskih pogovorov in osebnih nasvetov pa niti ni zabeleženih), 310 overitev (notarizacij) podpisov, fotokopij itd. (lani vsega skupaj 190), itd. PrijateFs Pharmacy St. Clair & E. 68 St. 361-4212 IZDAJAMO TUDI ZDRAVILA ZA RAČUN POMOČI DRŽAVE OHIO - AID FOR THE AGED PRESCIPTIONS Generalni konzulat je sicer sodeloval pri organizaciji pevke Bernarde Fink Inzko, Trobilnega kvinteta in ansambla Slovenske vojske, klavirskega dua Gorišek-Lazar, samostojno pripravil koncert klasične glasbe z branjem poezije in umetnostno razstavo v Slovenskem narodnem domu (razstava se je preselila še v dvorano župnije Marije Vne-bovzete), organiziral slovesno dvigovanje slovenske zastave pred Lausche-tovo stavbo v središču mesta, praznovanje ob dnevu državnosti 25. junija (v sodelovanju z Belokranjskim klubom. Muzejem Polke, Slovensko pristavo in Slovensko mladinsko skupino), organiziral postavitev razstave in nastop folklorne skupine Kres v clevelandski mestni hiši v okviru novembrskih Dnevov kulture Vzhodne Evrope, sodeloval pri zagonu novega Slovenskega smučarskega kluba (ki je februarja že organiziral prvi zelo uspešni smučarski izlet, načrtuje pa še nove), ter pri vzpostavitvi spletne strani Cleveland-slovenian.com, ki prav tako že več mesecev izpolnjuje svoje poslanstvo, itd. Letos je GK poskrbel za izvedbo prve konvencije predstavnikov Slovencev iz ZDA, katere "ponovitev” je bila v drugi polovici novembra. Posebne omembe je vredna us- tanovitev Združenja slovenskih poslovnežev in strokovnjakov, v okviru katerega je potekalo šest večjih sestankov po posamičnih sekcijah, v načrtu pa je tudi velik sprejem za vse s pomembnim govornikom iz vrste uspešnih rojakov. Največja pozornost pa velja ustanavljanju Slovenskega muzeja in arhiva (SMA) ter Centra za slovenske študije (CSŠ). Oba projekta sta zelo zahtevna, zato se sprva odvijata na videz razmeroma počasi, pa vendar se vse odvija v skladu z zastavljenimi načrti. SMA je v času pisanja tega besedila tik pred uradno registracijo, sprejetjem statuta, podpisom pisma o nameri s Slovenskim narodnim domom ter razpisom za polovično zaposlitev vodje, prihajajo pa tudi že prve pošiljke arhivskega in muzejskega gradiva ter celo finančne obljube. Center za slovenske študije, ki bo uradno in fizično domoval v prostorih Clevelandske državne univerze, bo prav tako predvidoma v nekaj mesecih polovično zaposlil izvršnega direktorja, ki bo usklajeval gostovanja slovenskih raziskovalcev, profesorjev in študentov na več univerzah v ZDA. Kako z veseljem vsepovsod pomagaš! Kar moreš, z dobro voljo vedno brž storiš in z Dragico, sinovoma se zdaj že vnukov veseliš. Tvoji sorodniki, rojaki, prijatelji in Pristavski upokojenci PAVLE BORŠTNIK “OČITNA Poznani slovenski pisatelj Drago Jančar je konec oktobra letos v Sobotni prilogi Dela objavil članek “Zelo očitna krava". Pod tem nenavadnim naslovom je podal eno najostrejših, pa tudi najbolj žalostnih analiz trenutnega političnega razpoloženja v Sloveniji. Ustavil se je namreč ob neki informativni brošuri, ki naj bi predstavila Slovenijo ostalim članicam Evropske zveze. Kdo je avtor brošure, ni Jasno, po Sloveniji pa jo menda propagira predvsem evropska poslanka dr. Romana Jordan Cizej. Po idejah te brošure so glavni junaki slovenske zgodovine: Marija Terezija, France Prešeren in “ljubljeni” maršal Josip Broz Tito. Jančar nato citira podobne brošure drugih srednjeevropskih narodov Komentar KRAVA” - Čehov, Slovakov, Madžarov in Polljakov -, ki vse brez izjeme govorijo tudi o prehodu iz komunizma v demokracijo, pa o težkih posledicah, ki jih je tem državam prinesla pretekla komunistična diktatura. Slovenska brošura tega prehoda sploh ne omenja in dela vtis, da se je vse zgodilo na nek zelo demokratičen način ter da v Sloveniji še danes prevladuje isto ozračje, kot pod komunistično diktaturo. Žalostno pri vsem tem je, seveda, da to najbrž drži. Zato je povsem u-pravičeno vprašanje: kje je bilo slovensko kulturno ministrstvo in, ne nazadnje, tudi zunanje ministrstvo, odnostno - sama vlada Janeza Janše, ko je ta brošura zagledala luč sveta? Jančar sam navaja vsaj delno razlago tega razpo- loženja: Ljudje, ki so do-raščali v povojnih letih in kasneje v samoupravnem socializmu, so se navadili, da je bilo za vse poskrbljeno in da so preživljali razmeroma brezskrbno mladost. Da je bila prav ta socialistična brezskrbnost eden poglavitnih razlogov, zakaj je slednjič vse zagrmelo, jim seveda ni nihče povedal. Zdaj, ko se tej generaciji bliža starost, pa se spominja dobrih, starih časov, ko jim je vladal naš “junak, Josip Broz”... Jančar zaključuje takole, da kjer ljudje tako mislijo, demokracija res ne more polno živeti. Očitno zdaj neka nova generacija raste brez vednosti o razliki med komunizmom in demokracijo. Očitno ne pozna vzrokov za razpad Jugoslavije. Očitno tega tudi šolski učbeniki ne poznajo. (Te nove generacije) imajo demokracijo očitno za “sistem, v katerem se kregajo politiki", slovenska država pa jim je nekaj, kar je po naključju padlo z nekega drevesa, polnega zrelih in gnilih sadežev. Gre torej za “skrivenčeno resnico”, ki lahko hitro postane laž, pa čeprav je očitna, kot je lahko očitna neka krava... Tako Jančar. Nas, ki Slovenijo opazujemo preko oceana, njegove misli prav nič ne presenečajo. Vsem, ki smo kdaj obiskali Slovenijo, je bilo očitno to nenavadno vzdušje, ko so še vedno veljale norme starega, komunističnega sistema, ali pa so vsaj služile kot model neke standardne ureditve in merilo, po katerem je bila presojena učinkovitost nove slovenske oblasti. Vsa tista melanholična obsedenost z vsem, kar jim je nekoč predstavljal socializem in njegov ljubljeni vodja, pa jim učinkovito ubija tudi vsako politično domiselnost. Ta jalovost sega tudi v same vrhove današnje državne uprave. Vse srednjeevropske države so izvedle lustracijo ostankov komunističnih režimov in potegnile črto pod medvojnim dogajanjem, Slovenija pa še vedno menca na mestu in niti sedanja vlada, ki naj bi bila demokratična, ne najde korajže, da bi udarila po mizi: Postojte vendar, ta burka je stara že 60 let! In stare ženice hodijo jokat in molit tja nekam v grmovje Kočevskega Roga, za pokoj in mir ljudem iz neke daljne dobe, ko je nad tistem “rajem pod Triglavom” gospodarilo satansko zlo... Slovenci v tujini prižigamo lučke pred slovenske podobe. Mi za Slovenijo nismo izgubljeni. Je Slovenija, ki se ne more ali noče otresti stare miselnosti, izgubljena za nas? ■ Dr. Zvone Žigon (nadaljevanje s str. 20) čeval slovenščino na več univerzah in nudil različne oblike poučevanja vsem zainteresiranim, v načrtu pa so tudi gostovanja izmenjujočih se predavateljev različnih strok na temo Slovenije in regije, v kateri se Slovenija nahaja- Zelo odmevna sta bila še dva dogodka - “oživitev” “Slovenke”, lesene skulpture, ki je pred leti krasila županovo pisarno in smo jo skupaj s svetnikoma J. Cimpermanom in M. Polenškom vnovič podarili sedanjemu županu, ter prvi maraton slovenskega veleposlanika v ZDA Samuela Žbogarja. Ta je tekel za žrtve min v Bosni in Hercegovini in ob spremljajočih prireditvah na dan pred maratonom se je samo zavoljo Clevelanda v dobrodelnem fondu nabralo za okoli 12.000 dolarjev. Vse našteto ne bi bilo mogoče brez odličnega sodelovanja moje pomočnice Johance Bajc in v delu leta tudi Lise Ovsenik, pa seveda brez pomoči in podpore moje soproge Irene. Vsekakor pa velja ogromen HVALA tudi vsem predstavnikom slovenskih organizacij in posameznikom, s katerimi smo na številnih večernih sestankih kovali in uresničevali načrte, in vsem, ki leto za letom in dan za dnem preko številnih žrtvovanih ur svojega prostega časa uresničujete svojo ljubezen do Slovenije! Volitve in Slovenci po svetu Volilno pravico ima v večini držav po svetu vsak državljan države, čeprav živi ali se je celo rodi! v drugi državi in je morda dobi! državljanstvo po starših. Stanka Gregorič danes živi v Mariboru. Pred tem je bila 28 let v Avstraliji novinarka in urednica, dejavna v tamkajšnji slovenski skupnosti. ❖ Ta posebnost torej ni simptomatična le za Slovenijo. Je tako prav ali ne, ne bom presojala. O slovenskem volilnem zakonu - novem ali starem - tudi ne, ker sem premalo pravno podkovana in premalo o tem obveščena. Strah pred izseljenci? Dotaknila se bom le tistega strašnega strahu levičarjev v Sloveniji, ki se bojijo volilnih glasov Slovencev po svetu, ter medijskega vika in krika, ker naj bi volila tudi “sovražna emigracija”, ki se je treba bati. Pa se ob tem vprašam, kje so in kje so bili do sedaj varuhi človekovih pravic v Sloveniji. In vprašam se, čemu tak strah. Da se jih bojijo “stari kadri", med njimi tudi stari komunisti, je jasno, saj so prav ti (povojna oblast komunistov, oznov-cev, udbovcev) lepo število ljudi pognali po svetu in jih oropali vsega, kar so si kadar koli ustvarili s težkim delom. Ne, ne, niso bili vsi belogardisti oziroma domobranci ali kolaboranti - kot jim danes tako očitajoče pripisujejo. Če so že bili, potem jih lahko po svetu danes preštejemo le še na prste dveh rok, saj je večina že pomrla. In kdo so potem še živeči, ki so odšli po svetu iz ekonomskih ali čisto avanturističnih razlogov, predvsem pa mlajši? So tudi ti osovraženi? Še danes se na primer v Avstralijo preseli iz Slovenije letno od 100 do 130 družin. Bodo tudi te satanizirane in obarvane belo ali celo s kolabo-rantskim predznakom? V BLAG SPOMIN 2. Le maloštevilnim je bil vrnjen del premoženja po denacionalizacijskem zakonu, in še to v simbolični obliki, nekateri pa nimajo denarja niti za odvetnike. V njihove domove so se po drugi svetovni vojni naselili partijski voditelji oziroma tisti, ki so z njimi simpatizirali. In ne samo naselili, pobrali so jim vse premoženje -od zlata do umetniških slik in drugih dragocenosti -, v svet so bili pognani zaradi včasih tudi izmišljenega “satanicum politicum”, kot je nekoč dejal naš pesnik Oton Župančič. Nujnost boljšega poznavanja Za boljše poznavanje izseljencev bi morali poskrbeti predvsem v Sloveniji. Vse premalo resnic se v Sloveniji sliši in ve o rojakih po svetu. Pred kratkim je bil poleg Urada za Slovence v zamejstvu in po svetu. Komisije državnega zbora za Slovence v tujini. Svetovnega slovenskega kongresa, Slovenske izseljenske matice, Slovenije v svetu, vsi obstajajo že več let, ustanovljen vladni svet za Slovence v zamejstvu in po svetu. Na prvem ustanovnem srečanju je avstralski predstavnik Florjan Auser predlagal kot prioritetno nalogo sveta širjenje vedenja o Slovencih, ki živijo zunaj Slovenije, predvsem v čezmorskih državah. Ob tem se sprašujem, ali se vse omenjene institucije in društva dovolj trudijo, da bi predstavili izseljence tudi v Sloveniji. In če se ozrem nazaj v jugoslovanska leta: izseljenci so v Slovenijo nosili devize, tuje pokojnine (še danes) vlagali v slovenske banke, kupovali slovenske izdelke, ki jih je bilo mogoče nabaviti v trgovinah po skoraj vseh celinah in se tam dobijo še danes, gmotno so pomagali sorodnikom, da so si zgradili boljše hiše ... Sovražno razsojajo o pravicah in dolžnostih slovenskih izseljencev in se ne zavedajo ali nočejo vedeti, da pripadniki nekega naroda ne izginejo z odra zgodovine, čeprav živijo na drugem koncu sveta. Pavle Borštnik o knjigi Slovenski eksodus 1945 Jože Rant, Mecenska založba, Buenos Aires 2007 PERRY, O. - Pod tem naslovom je v Buenos Airesu, Argentina, pred nedavnim izšla 350 strani obsegajoča knjiga, katere avtor, dr. Jože Rant, je tik pred izidom za rakom umrl. Knjiga je bila napisana s specifičnim namenom, da bi mladim ali mlajšim slovenskim izseljencem razložila zgodbo njihovih staršev in starih staršev: zakaj so zapustili domovino, zakaj se ne vračajo vanjo po vseh teh letih, in zakaj jih domovina ne sprejema s kakšnim pretiranim navdušenjem, če se le vrnejo. Vse te tri glavne namene je knjiga brez dvoma dosegla in najbrž presegla. Iz prvotne enostavne misli, se je namreč rodilo obširno, domala znanstveno delo, napisano na osnovi številnih podatkov in upoštevajoč najnovejše vire in njihove podatke. S tem je bila ustvarjena zelo skoncentrirana podoba slovenske protirevolucije in njene končne usode. Avtor je svojo namero izpolnil brez dvoma z velikim naporom in vztrajanjem. Rezultat, katerega sicer ni doživel, pa je vsekakor občudovanja vreden in to z različnih vidikov. Ne najmanjši je v priloženih fotografijah. Nekatere, zlasti iz Ljubljane, so doslej nepoznane in dostojno predstavljajo prestolnico zdaj neodvisne Slovenije: druge so dokumentarnega značaja in ostajajo priče tragedije, ki je zajela slovenski narod ob koncu druge svetovne vojne. Rant je delo napisal, seveda, z zornega kota svoje politične stranke in filozofije. To dejstvo tu in tam morda zadene v drugače uglašene štrune, vendar nikjer do neke kričeče disonance, ki bi zahtevala korekturo ali celo preklic. Zasluži pa knjiga neko znanstveno, strokovno oceno, ker samo s tem bo avtor v resnici poplačan za trud, ki ga je vložil v njeno uresničitev. Dejstvo, da ga ni več med nami, te dolžnosti, ali potrebe ne preklicuje, temveč jo kvečjemu še poglablja. Posebej je treba omeniti, da je knjiga istočasno izšla tudi v angleškem in španskem prevodu. Prvega je oskrbel Jerry Zupan, drugega pa prof. Maria Rosa Rapisarda. O kvaliteti prevoda, zlasti španskega, bo moral spregovoriti nekdo drug. Kumse Dne 18. novembra je umrla 83 let stara Margaret J. Kumse, rojena Slota, vdova po Johnu, mati č.g. Janeza, župnika fare Marije Vnebov-zete, Rebecce Ambrosic, Joyce Kumse, Cindy Zven-sky in že pok. Martyja, 10-krat stara mati, sestra Pau- la, Veronice Freidt in Rite Patrick, nekaj bratov in sestra je že pok. Pogreb je bil 21. novembra s sv. mašo v cerkvi Prince of Peace v Barbertonu, kjer je pokojna živela vse življenje, mašo pa je daroval njen isn č.g. Janez. Žalujoči: hčerki FRANCES in MARTINA ŠTEPEC sin MARK, zet ANTON vnuki, vnukinje, pravnuki in pravnukinje ter ostalo sorodstvo V BLAG SPOMIN in ZAHVALA Z žalostjo v srcu naznanjamo, da je po večmesečni težki bolezni, previden z zakramenti sv. vere naš nebeški Oče poklical v našo večno domovino našega dragega, ljubečega, dobrega in skrbnega moža, očeta, starega očeta, brata in strica Pokojni Vinko je bil sin dobrih in vernih staršev Jakoba in Ivanke Vrhovnik, ki so ga z ljubeznijo vzgojila v dobrega in vernega človeka. Ker je po svoji vesti odklanjal zločinsko komunistično oblast, se je ob koncu druge svetovne vojne z 10-tiso-či odločil in zapustil rodno domovino in se podal meseca maja 1945 v neznano, mrzlo tujino, najprej na Vetrinjsko polje in nato v D.P. taborišče v Spital, Avstrija. Po posredovanju dobrih slovenskih rojakov je v začetku leta 1950 prišel v ZDA, v Cleveland, Ohio. Ker je bil izučen mesarski pomočnik, se je zaposlil v grocerijski trgovini Ivec. Po nekaj letih sta s svakom Frank Urankarjem odprla lastno groce-rijsko trgovino na Shawnee Ave. Zadnjih 25 let pred upokojitvijo pa je bil zaposlen pri Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Dept. Po upokojitvi se je družina preselila v Madison, Ohio, kjer so si uredili v naravi lep in prijeten dom, ki je bil vedno odprt vsem prijateljem in rojakom ob vsakem času. Vinko je bil vedno in najprvo dober in ljubeč mož ženi Mary, ljubeč in skrben družinski oče. Družina mu je bila vedno prva skrb. Poleg tega pa je vedno še našel čas za našo slovensko skupnost. Vinko je bil zadnji še živeči ustanovni član Slovenske pristave, Iger je bil vsa leta odbornik in zelo delaven in to še posebej pri olepšavi Pristave. Ves čas je bil odbornik, podpredsednik Kluba pristavskih upokojencev, aktiven član Misijonske Znamkarske Akcije. Ves čas od prihoda v Ameriko je bil član fare Marije Vnebovzete v Collinwoodu, Ohio, kjer je bil tudi član Društva Najsvetejšega Imena. Bil je član Društva SPB Tabor, član Društva Srca Jezusovega KSKJ, član Baragove zveze in sta se z ženo Mary udeleževala romanja v Baragovo deželo, kakor tudi številnih drugih romanj. Vinkova zasluga je, da so Pristavski upokojenci začeli s popularnimi vsakoletnimi kolinami. To je zelo skromen opis Vinkovih zavzetosti in aktivnosti za dobrobit naše slovenske skupnosti. Vedno je vse delo opravljal z veliko mero dobre volje. Na tem mestu se želimo zahvaliti vsem, ki so nam v Vinkotovi bolezni bili v pomoč in tolažbo. Najprvo naša iskrena zahvala č.g. župniku Marije Vnebovzete Johnu Kumše za obiske in opravljene sv. maše. Zelo smo hvaležni duhovnikom za obiske in somaševanje za našega Vinkota; ti so sledeči: g. Jože Božnar, g. Viktor Cimperman, g. Edward Jerše, župnik Brezmadežnega Spočetja g. Donnelly, g. Urbanija, diakoni Bob Swarch, David Kushner in Thomas Huperth. Vnebovzete za molitve v pogrebnem zavodu, za udeležbo pri sv. maši in za darove za sv. maše rajnega Vinkota. Najlepša hvala Radijski družini Edija Mejača, oddaji Toneta Ovsenika, za ganljivo sporočilo o smrti našega dragega Vinka. Naša hvaležna zahvala Pristavskim upokojencem za tako številen obisk in molitve v pogrebnem zavodu, za udeležbo pri maši in spremljavo na pokopališče Vernih duš. Naša topla zahvala organistu in pevkam in pevcem pri pogrebni sv. maši. Hvaležni smo osebju Hospice of the Western Reserve za številne obiske in lepo oskrbo za časa Vinkotove bolezni. Naša iskrena in topla zahvala vsem, ki ste darovali vence, za sv. maše ali za druge dobre namene v spomin Vinkota. Naša topla zahvala ge. Julki Zalar in vsem njenim pomočnicam za okusno in dobro pogrebščino, kakor tudi vsem drugim dobrini ženam za podarjeno pecivo. Vsem se za dobroto in simpatije ob času naše velike izgube dobrega moža in očeta najlepše zahvaljujemo in naj vam Bog vašo dobroto obilno poplača. Zahvala gre pogrebnemu zavodu Žele za lepo pripravljen in voden pogreb. Hvala članom družine, ki so z ljubeznijo do očeta in starega očeta nosili krsto na božje njivo. Ti so bili: sinova John in Lojze, vnuki Brian, John ml., Christopher in Jeremy. Vsem, za katere smo imeli naslove, smo poslali zahvalne kartice. Če kdo ni prejel naše zahvale, prosimo, sprejmite to našo zahvalo kot posebej pjim namenjena. In naj vam vsem Bog obilno poplača. Dragi naš Vinko, s tvojim odhodom v Večnost je nastala velika žalost in praznina. Hvala ti za vso tvojo ljubezen in dobroto, ki smo jo bili v življenju deležni.
