Seveda je Jezus za to najprej poskrbel sam, saj je Jezus s svojim božjim naukom »sekal« v mišljenje, navade in osebna prepricanja številnih sodobnikov; še posebej tistih, ki so imeli zaradi osebnostnih, dru-žbenih in verskih zahtev in koristi že tocno doloceno in izdelano mišljenje in prakso. Tisto pac, ki jim je zagotavljala nepravicen in neupravicen privilegiran družbeni in socialni status. Toda tistega, ki so ga že dolgo lovili, je potrebno za vselej zasaciti in onemogociti. Se ve, kako. Dokonc-no, seveda. In za to je samo eno sredstvo. Likvidacija. Gre do križa. Procession: Mark 11:1-10 Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem First reading Isaiah 50:4-7 The true disciple doesn’t abandon God despite opposition and so, in turn, is not abandoned by God. Second reading Philippians 2:6-11 Jesus did not exploit his equality with God. Gospel Mark 14:1-15:47 An unnamed woman ignores convention and anoints Jesus’ feet with expensive perfume and her tears. “She has done what she could.” Illustration It's Palm Sunday. People knew that Jesus understood the hardship and injustice they experienced from their Roman overlords and from the rigid legalism and contempt of the Temple authorities. As he entered Jerusalem, the city of David, they called him the “son of David” who was “blessed in the name of the Lord”. The scribes and Pharisees were unhappy to see Jesus. Scared lest his popularity spark an uprising against the Romans, they worried that people might reject their own authority. They also resented his condemnation of their behav-iour: The scribes and Pharisees saw Jesus on Palm Sunday and plotted his death. Simon invited Jesus to his home as a topic of conversation between himself and his guests. He didn’t care that Jesus was hot, tired, dusty and deserved respect. The unnamed woman, seeing their bad manners, grabbed her best perfume with which to anoint Jesus. She hadn’t expected to burst into tears, hadn’t thought to carry a tow-el, and so she dried his feet with her hair. She did-n’t care what others might say. Jesus understood and accepted her: that was all that mattered. Gospel reading Today’s Gospel readings show two sides of the same story. As Jesus rode a donkey into Jerusa-lem, the ordinary people celebrated his presence among them whilst, in the background, the au-thorities criticised and plotted. True, within a few days, because the scribes and Pharisees were ex-perts at manipulating crowds, some would call for Jesus’ crucifixion. In Simon’s house, an unnamed woman anoint-ed Jesus’ feet with expensive perfume, washing them with her tears and drying them with her hair. Meanwhile, the “more important” people condemned both her lifestyle and her behaviour. Both stories describe “them and us” situations. When Jesus rode a donkey into Jerusalem, the scribes and Pharisees condemned the actions of those who welcomed him. When the woman washed Jesus’ feet with her tears, she was scorned because of her extravagance and because of the spec-tacle she had made in “polite society”. Jesus was criti-cised for ignoring convention and letting the woman touch him. He hadn't stopped her actions which had also highlighted Simon’s disrespect in not washing the feet of a guest. The fragrance of her perfume would linger inside the house for several days, reminding Simon of his social sin of neglecting a visitor. Application A customer in a jewellery shop looked at a crucifix. “Other people might reject him,” she said, “but I wouldn't. If I’d seen Jesus, I would have followed him.” She sounded like Peter, who declared, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you” – and then denied Jesus three times. Yet Peter eventually walked his own Way of the Cross. Was the woman truly Jesus’ unswervingly faithful, lifelong disciple? Only she and God know the answer. Steve’s daily prayer had become that of the Good Thief: “Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Serving out his life sentence, Steve de-clared, “If I’d known God, I wouldn’t have committed my crimes. I’m so sorry for what happened.” Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus initially stayed hidden, scared of other people’s reactions. Yet when they recognised the truth of Jesus, they were unafraid and remained faithful to their deaths. Did other Jewish leaders imitate their example? The crowd who welcomed Jesus on Palm Sunday included some people who, several days later, would call for his death, but there were also faithful followers to whom Jesus meant everything and would later prove it by paying the ultimate price. Did those who called “Crucify him!” later bitterly regret their words? When the unnamed woman anointed Jesus, she ignored the wagging tongues. Her heart was his forev-er, regardless of the consequences. It takes courage to make new beginnings and to move beyond the letter of the law to embrace its God-given spirit. Jesus showed us the possibilities. Where do I stand? Otroci so to soboto v Slovenski šoli delali butarice za cvet-no nedeljo. Celebrating St. Joseph’s Feast Day has been a long standing tradition in Slovenia and in Canada, as he is the patron saint of our society. As we celebrate this special day, we extend a happy name day to all the Joseph’s and Joe’s, Josephine’s and Josie’s, Joze, Jos-ko, Jozica. The feast of St. Joseph is celebrated on March 19. We try to celebrate this feast on the Sunday that is closest to the actual feast day. This year, our banquet fell on March 17, which is the annual celebration of St. Patrick. In honour of St. Patrick, we added some green colours to our tables. As well this year, our banquet fell into the middle of Lent. Traditionally, we always enjoyed music during our banquets. This year, as we are in the Lent season, we will not be playing our polka and folk music, how-ever Fr. Drago provided more lighter background mu-sic. We will also enjoy viewing pictures from our activi-ties since our last banquet. Our gathering today will include a nice meal, being together with family and friends to enjoy celebrating the feast of St. Joseph. We will have some very nice ladies coming around during dessert to sell some 50/50 tickets. 1 for $5, 3 for $10 or the St. Joseph Special 10 tickets for $20. All profits from this banquet will go back to St. Gregory the Great. We kindly ask that you please sup-port our church. On behalf of the Slovenian Society of St. Joseph, we thank everyone who helped us make this a suc-cessful banquet. I would like to first thank our cook Nancy, her staff and serving crew for providing us a nice traditional lunch. We are grateful for Nancy’s 3 kids who volunteered Saturday to help set up the tables, chairs and all the table settings for our lunch. Our hard working bartenders, Tom Miklavcic, Adam Novak and Frank Skerl made sure no guests were thirsty. Thank you Frances Scarcelli and Amanda Purdon for volunteering to sell 50/50 raffle tickets. A special thank you to our little helper “Brayden” who helped us with the door prizes and provided eve-ryone with some fun and laughter. We are grateful to Dutchman Florist (Stoney Creek) who donated all the spring flower arrangements for our door prizes. As well, thanks to Rosie Sustersic who donated a bottle of wine towards our door prizes. Thank you to Alexandra Novak who prepared all the vases with flowers for our tables. Our 50/50 draw collected a total of $960, which was $10 more than 2023. The winning ticket was picked by Fr. Drago for a prize of $480. The 50/50 winner was Rob Jagatic, who generously donated $100 back to the church. In total, $580 was raised for St. Gregory the Great as well as the $303 profit from the bar. Our banquet concluded with each table participat-ing in a game to win the chance to take home the flow-ers as the vases were passed around the table until a final winner was announced while holding the flowers in their hand. We would not be able to continue doing what we do without the St. Joseph Society Board which include Dan Demsar, Frank Novak and Milan Ferletic. The Board tries to do their best to keep our traditions going as long as our members and community support us. Thank you, Fr. Drago, for taking the time to prepare the slide show for us to enjoy and all your dedicated work to help with our banquet, as well as all the sup-port and spiritual leadership that you provide to our parish, groups and other clubs that surround St. Grego-ry the Great. A final thanks to everyone who came to our annual banquet to celebrate the Feast of St. Joseph and we hope to see everyone again next year. – Peter Novak St. Joseph's Banquet - March 17th, 2024 “HE CAME TO PROCLAIM PEACE!” is the theme of this year’s Holy Land Collection on Good Friday, March 29, 2024. Father Bob Mokry, O.F.M., the Commissary of the Holy Land in Canada, has written a letter encouraging Catholics to be especially generous this year. “We know, of course, that money cannot assure peace, but it can provide a measure of compassionate help for many Christians who wait in faith during these difficult times for the peace and justice that Christ proclaimed.” Pope Saint Paul VI recognized these difficulties fifty years ago and inaugurated the annual Holy Land collection in dioceses and parishes throughout the world so that the pastoral, edu-cational and social ministries of the Church in the Holy Land, and its care of the holy places would continue for the benefit of Christians everywhere. May this year’s appeal show the generous support of our Canadian Church for our brothers and sisters in the Holy Land. Heart to Heart - M. Rev.
