LXXXVII Doma in po svetu - PREGLED NAJVAŽNEJŠIH DOGODKOV - 250 vojakov in 8 članov posadke našlo smrt v letalski nesreči blizu letališča Gander v Kanadi — Namenjeni domov za božič GANDER, Kan. — Včeraj je treščilo na tla blizu mednarodnega letališča v tem mestecu letalo DC-8, last čarterske letalske družbe Arrow. Na letalu je bilo 250 vojakov ZDA in 8 članov posadke. Kmalu po vzletu iz letališča so kontrolorji poletov izgubili stik z letalom, ki je menda doseglo 1000 čevljev višine in potem iz še nepojasnjenega vzroka padlo na tla. Vsi na letalu so bili takoj mrtvi. Letalska družba Arrow je v zadnjih letih imela precej težav z inšpektorji Federalne letalske agencije, ker so bila letala slabo vzdrževana. Po včerajšnji nesreči se je javil neki letalski mehanik s Floride, ki je pred meseci popravljal ponesrečeno letalo. Dejal je, da je bilo letalo v slabem mehaničnem stanju in da so bile težave predvsem z motorji. Uradna preiskava o vzroku nesreče pa je Še v začetni fazi. Vojaki na letalu so pripadali 101. letalski padalski diviziji, ki ima sicer slovito bojno preteklost. Pravkar so bili končali 6 mesecev na Sinajskem polotoku, kjer so bili del mednarodne vojaške enote, katera pomaga ohraniti mir na tem spornem ozemlju. Uslužbenci na letališču vedo povedati, da so bili vojaki zelo veselo razpoloženi, ko so kupovali božična darila za svojce. Pentagon trdi, da ni nič znanega, kar bi kazalo na kakšno sabotažo. Očividci pravijo, da letalo ni eksplodiralo v zraku, ampak pri padcu na zemljo. Letos je bilo najnevarnejše leto za civil-n° letalsko industrijo doslej. V številnih nesrečah potniških letal je bilo ubitih 1948 ljudi. Prejšnje rekordno leto je bilo 1974, ko je bilo ubitih 1299 ljudi. Predstavniki civilne letalske industrije poudarjajo, da so poleti letaš kljub številnim nesrečam dvakrat varnejši kot so bili pred 10 leti. Kongresniki zavrnili zakonski osnutek o reformi zveznega davčnega sistema — Republikanski voditelji iščejo kompromis WASHINGTON, D.C. — Predstavniki Reaganove administracije se pogajajo z vodilnimi republikanskimi in demokratskimi kongresniki v želji, da bi dosegli kompromisno rešitev o zakonskem osnutku za reformo zveznega davčnega sistema. Preteklo sredo Je spodnji dom zavrnil tako demokratski kot rePublikanski zakonski osnutek. Republikanski kongresniki so v ogromni večini glasovali proti kljub temu, da jim je predsednik eagan svetoval, naj glasujejo za demokratski načrt. Demokratski poslanci so potem zavrnili republikanski načrt. Demokrati so pripravljeni na ponovno 8 asovanje, zahtevajo pa od Reagana, da jim ^naprej zagotovi, da bo za demokratski dav-ni načrt glasovalo najmanj 50 republikan-s 'h kongresnikov. Tega Reagan ne more jtariti. Mnogi kongresniki, ki sicer želijo re-°rmo davčnega sistema, menijo, da ako ne ° mogoče najti kompromisne formule do jta etka prihodnjega tedna, ne bo mogoče °seči nobene temeljite reforme tudi v Pr‘hodnjih letih. Reagan sicer nasprotuje demokratske-u ^rtu. Računa pa, da bodo pomanjklji-°sti zakonskega osnutka odpravili republi-anski senatorji in da tako bo končno odo-rar*13 C?av^na ref°rma, ki jo bo mogel podpi-hrhlNje80Va te^ava Je v tem, da mu obrnejo et prav republikanski kongresniki. Državni sekretar George P. Shultz povedal NATO zaveznikom, da jim bodo ZDA odobrile manj vojaške podpore v bodoče BRUSELJ, Bel. — Na sestanku zunanjih ministrov 15 NATO držav, je državni sekretar George Shultz dejal, da bodo ZDA v bodoče najbrž prisiljene omejevati obseg vojaške podpore, ki jo pošiljajo svojim zaveznikom v okviru NATO. Do tega bo prišlo zaradi prizadevanja v ZDA, da bi zmanjšali ogromen proračunski primanjkljaj, je pojasnil Shultz. Po vsej verjetnosti bo zvezni kongres odobril in predsednik Reagan podpisal zakon, po katerem bo zvezna vlada prisiljena odpraviti proračunski primanjkljaj do leta 1991. Močno bo prizadet tudi proračun obrambnega tajništva, je rekel Shultz. Prihodnji teden bo Shultz obiskal nekatere druge evropske dežele, med njimi tudi Jugoslavijo, Madžarsko in Romunijo. ZDA namreč vidijo v teh državah sicer komunistične režime, a take, ki imajo sorazmerno neodvisno stališče napram Sovjetski zvezi. Filipinska opozicija le strnila svoje vrste — Aquino in Laurel bosta skupaj kandidirala zoper predsednika Ferdinanda Marcosa BATANGAS, Fi. — Corazon Aquino, ki bo kandidirala proti predsedniku Ferdinandu Marcosu na izrednih volitvah 7. februarja 1986, je rekla včeraj na zborovanju volivcev v tem mestu, da bo branila pravice vseh tistih, ki so bili preganjani od Marcoso-vega režima. Ne gre za maščevanje, je dejala 52-letna Aquinova, ampak za povrnitev k demokratičnim principom. Izrazila je svojo zaskrbljenost, da volitve ne bodo svobodne, ker bodo volitve organizirali in izvedli Mar-cosovi privrženci. Opozicijski krogi so veseli, ker seje bivši sen. Salvador Laurel odločil, da bo kandidiral za mesto podpredsednika države in ne za predsednika. Tako bosta Aquinova in Lai el kandidirala skupaj in bo demokratična opozicija enotna. Opazovalci filipinskih razmer še vedno menijo, da bo Marcos zmagal na volitvah. - Kratke vesti - San Francisco, Kalif. — Včeraj je Jerry Whitworth, ki je obtožen vohunjenja za ZSSR v vohunski mreži Johna Walkerja, rekel, da je nedolžen. Vendar Walker sedaj sodeluje s preiskovalci, ki trdijo, da je Whitworth izdal najbolj tajne ameriške šifre sovjetskim agentom in bil za svoje neprecenljive usluge prejel kar $322,000. No. 95 Friday, December 13, 1985 ®a^gg£*>83 Čakajo nas težke preizkušnje (Ta članek je izšel v septembrski številki Celovškega zvona in bit ponatisnjen v Naši luči. Članek potrjuje zaskrbljenost samih Slovencev v domovini o njihovem vedno bolj ogroženem položaju v okviru današnje Jugoslavije. Ur.) V zadnjem času se tudi Slovenci v Jugoslaviji soočamo z izbruhi nestrpnosti do nas kot naroda. V mučnem spominu nam je ostal izgred na javni debati jezikovnega razsodišča (protislovenske izjave v sami Ljubljani srbskega pisca Bulato-viča — op. ur. AD) ter spremljajoča publiciteta v tiražnem jugoslovanskem tisku. Potem smo doživeli zaporo državne meje, se pravi izolacijo od slovenskega zamejstva. Lahko bi še govorili javnih sondiranjih jugoslovanskih unitarističnih tendenc (= o javnem poizvedovanju glede jugoslovanskih teženj po enotnosti) in precej razširjenega mnenja med jugoslovanskimi priseljenci v Sloveniji, da »čez petdeset let tu ne bo nobenega Slovenca več«... ... tu imamo tudi poskus dejanskega, se pravi upravnega posega v tkivo naše kulturne substance (= jedra); tu so pro-slula programska jedra, ki nam Slovencem že na osnovnošolski stopnji dejansko jemljejo našo kulturno avtonomijo in s tem tudi odločilni instrumentarij za sistematično vzgojo slovenske zavesti. Ob tem pač lahko le ugotovimo, da se nam je povrnilo stanje narodne ogroženosti. V narodnih bojih prejšnjega in tega stoletja so se odločilne bitke odigravale na polju šolstva: z ljudsko prosveto in ne s topovi smo Slovenci zajezili prodor germanskega etničnega (= narodnostnega) mostišča na Sredozemlje. Če smo se Slovenci pridružili Jugoslaviji in s tem stopili v tako imenovano bratsko sožitje z drugimi narodi te države, smo v največji meri soodgovorni za naš položaj v tej državi. Kar zadeva naše slovenske predstave o tem sožitju, jih je mogoče strniti v ugotovitev, da smo se pridružili Jugoslaviji zato, da bi ohranili narodno samobitnost — da bi se zavarovali pred germanizacijo in latinizacijo — in jo tudi razvili v kulturni, gospodarski in politični organizem... V največ primerih se tudi v Jugoslaviji, pred drugimi narodi, vedemo kot manjšina. Veljava našega slovenskega jezika, najvidnejšega znamenja naše samobitnosti, je v naših očeh majhna, in pripravljeni smo ga čisto samobitno zatajiti tudi takrat, ko tega od nas nihče ne terja. Nismo še doživeli, da bi slovenski politični predstavnik, tudi kadar zastopa samo Slovenijo, v čisto reprezentativnem, v naprej pripravljenem nastopu, jugoslovanski javnosti spregovoril v slovenščini. Skoraj da ni poslovnega sestanka, razen tistih s čisto slovenskimi udeleženci, na katerih bi slovenščina sploh imela kakšno veljavo. Pa čeprav večkrat mi, kot razvitejši, dajemo znanje, tehnologijo — in predvsem denar. Tudi to, kar dajemo, dajemo kot podložniki. Predstavniki drugih narodov v Jugoslaviji, zlasti pa funkcionarji v zveznih telesih, v javnosti ali osebnih stikih poznajo le »asimiliranega« (= prilagojenega) Slovenca in so se na takega tudi navadili. V njihovih očeh Slovenec tudi mora biti Zaključek dela za Spominski sklad dr. G. Rožmana EUCLID, O. - Ob letošnjem Zahvalnem dnevu se je odbor za »Spominski sklad škofa dr. Gregorija Rožmana« sestal na svoji zadnji seji in sklenil zaključiti svoje delo. Pred 18 meseci se je maloštevilen Slomškov krožek pri Mariji Vnebovzeti v Collin-woodu odločil izvesti veliko delo. Odločil se je sprejeti ponudbo Mohorjeve družbe v Celovcu, da opremi v dijaškem domu Sv. Modesta, ki je bil še v gradnji, knjižnico, ki naj bi bila posvečena spominu velikemu slovenskemu škofu dr. Gregoriju Rožmanu. Novoizvoljeni odbor, v katerem je bilo 13 članov in članic, se je z vso vnemo oprijel dela in kot marljive čebelice pričel z denarno nabirko. Istočasno smo tudi iskali umetnika, ki bi za knjižnico izdelal umetniški škofov portret, ker smo želeli, da Rožmanovo knjižnico krasi škofova slika. Presenetljivo hitro, brez zaprek je napredovala denarna nabirka. Izdelava zahtevne umetniške slike pa je potekala počasi. Priznani ameriški umetnik, prof. Joseph Cintron je posvetil temu delu veliko pozornosti in mnogo napora. Krasna umetnina je prišla iz umetnikovih rok. Razstavljena je bila v mpsecu maju v treh slovenskih cerkvah in sicer pri Sv. Vidu, pri Mariji Vnebovzeti in pri Sv. Lovrencu v Nev-burgu. In končno je krasila oltar v katedrali sv. Janeza ob priliki žalne spominske proslave za pomorjene domobrance in druge žrtve revolucije ob 40-letnici teh dogodkov. Po srečni poti preko morja je bila 20. aprila 1985 slika umeščena in blagoslovljena v Modestovem domu v Celovcu ob veliki slovesnosti, katere se je udeležilo do 70 koroških in zamejskih duhovnikov. Na zaključni seji smo se odborniki počutili v svojih srcih srečni, ker smo uspešno izpeljali naše delo. In to z vašo pomočjo, velikodušni slovenski darovalci, ki ste iz ljubezni do nepozabnega škofa radi darovali za njegov spomenik na Koroškem. Naj vam bo vse to bogato poplačano! Prisrčna zahvala izrekam Slomškovemu krožku v Collin-woodu, dalje odboru, ki je z veliko marljivostjo organiziral in izpeljal nabiralno akcijo, vsem, ki so nam kakorkoli pomagali, in tudi umetniku, ki je brezhibno izdelal škofov portret. Vida in fari Marije Zahvala Slov. šole pri Mariji Vnebovzeti CLEVELAND, O. - Bilo je 1. decembra, ko smo imeli pri Mariji Vnebovzeti prav lepo miklavževanje. Otroci so lepo podali kratko igrico »Na nebeški tehtnici«. Za šest fantičev so v skrbeh tako parklji kot angeli. Že kaže, da bodo grehi težji od dobrih del, ko se angel spomni še na materino srce, ki vedno prosi le vse dobro, in zmaga je na angelski strani. Hvala vam, otroci, za to lepo popoldne! Sv. Miklavž je pršel v lepem spremstvu malih in velikih angelov, a tudi rogači so se potrudili in skrbno držali spremstvo. Za prikaz vsega tega smo iskreno hvaležni g. Rudiju Knezu, ki z veliko potrpežljivostjo uči in pili našo mladež. Bog Vas ohrani pri zdravju še mnogo let, je naša iskrena želja! Hvaležni smo vsem staršem, ki so pripravili in pospravili dvorano, pomagali v kuhinji. Vnebovzete, ki sta bili pokroviteljici tega dela in sta nam s svojim vodstvom bili vseskozi v oporo. Advent — pričakovanje in priprava na božič Vsako leto me malo pred božičem pokliče po telefonu neka gospa in mi pove, kako odveč ji je božični praznik. »Nič nimam od božiča, samo veliko dela, pogrnjeno mizo in nekaj daril, to je pa tudi vse. Nobenega veselja nimam pri tem. Sdmo garanje! Na koncu moram pa še hliniti, da je to nekaj na moč slovesnega, ko v resnici komaj čakam, da je vse skupaj že mimo.« Pred leti mi je — zdaj že pokojni — sobrat rekel: »Veš, vsako leto težje praznujem božič. Res je, da je čas danes drugačen, kot je bil včasih. Zakaj so včasih laže praznovali? Zadnja leta smo v veselo pripravo na božič privedli adventni venec, saj česa drugega tako ne poznamo več. Naše slovensko pričakovanje božiča smo zamenjali s tujim. Advent v slovenski hiši je bil povezan z zornicami. Skozi ves advent se je svoje čase zbirala fara zjutraj pri maši. Po vaseh so hodili farani z baklami v cerkev. V cerkvi so imeli potem mašo pa rožni venec in kratek nagovor. Vsa ta duhovna priprava, to vsakdanje, mesec dni trajajoče srečevanje s skrivnostjo, je uglaševalo dušo na praznično obhajanje božiča. Lepo, lepo romantično — boste zmajevali z glavo. Vendar pa to ni več mogoče! Zjutraj moramo zgodaj na delo, popoldan, ko smo že utrujeni, pa nas čakajo doma še druge skrbi in — če se le da — še dodatno delo, če hočemo zadostiti vsem željam naših skromnih otrok, ki so tako ubogi, da brez radia sploh ne morejo več živeti, zvečer pa morajo biti ob televizorju na tekočem z vsemi nadebudnimi idoli, le za večerno molitev potem seveda nimajo več časa pa tudi smisla ne. Zato pa je tako pomembno, da dajemo za božič ustrezno bogata darila, saj sicer božiča sploh ne bi bilo! Zelo, zelo smo Te ljubili, solzne naše so oči, Te nikdar ne bomo pozabili, prav do konca naših dni. Lepo okrašena jelka (smrečica), dovolj lučic in bogatih okraskov, spodaj pa zavitki; tekmovanje, kdo bo dal več. Jaslice pod »jelko« — redka izjema... Potem se pa še čudimo, če nas božič nič več ne prevzame! Odstranili smo jaslice in postavili jelko! Malo pa le pretiravate, gospod župnik, se vam ne zni? Če nič drugega ne, pri polnočnici smo bili redno, dokler je še bila. Samo vi duhovniki ste nam božič ukradli, odpravili ste polnočnico, potem pa pravite, da ne znamo več praznovati božiča! Saj bi šli radi k polnočnici, a je marsikje ni več. Na sam božič se moramo pa vendarle tudi malo spočiti in obiskati kakšnega znanca. Seveda bomo poskusili stopiti tudi malo v cerkev; pogledali bomo jaslice. Veste, najlepše so pri frančiškanih v Ljubljani. Kaj vse imajo tam, okoli pa teče voda in goni mlinčke, pa koliko ovac! Res, enkratno! Tako lepo, da votlino s Kristusom komaj še lahko odkriješ! Pa smo tam! Kristusa komaj še vidimo. Že pesnik pred tristo leti je napisal: »In če je to Dete (Kristus) tisočkrat rojeno, če ni za tč, je vse zgubljeno!« Zame? Kaj pa naj mi to dete da? Dva prosta dneva, pa še plačana. V resnici pa pomeni to Dete srečanje božjega s človeškim. Z Njim vstopa Bog vidno v svet. Nebogljen, čaka človeške ljubezni, da jo potem dvigne in na novo poveže z Bogom. Govori nam o resnični skrbi za ubogega človeka, da bi mu razodel pot odrešitve in da bi usmeril naše življenje na pot k večnosti. Zaradi Kristusa se naše življenje podaljšuje v večnost, naša človeška nebogljenost pa povezuje z božjo navzočnostjo med nami. Misijonski odsek New York poroča NEW YORK, N.Y. - Misijonski odsek New York se vsem prav lepo zahvaljuje, da smo zopet lepo uspeli na naši prireditvi. Prebitek znaša $1,580. Vsem, ki ste sodelovali, pomagali, darovali darila v denarju in dobitkah, prispevali domače pecivo, ali pa se udeležili in pokazali, da naše misijonarje podpirate, izrekamo prav iskren Bog plačaj! Ko se v današnjem času gode res pretresljivi dogodki, nas vse prevzame in nam da misliti. Preveč smo bili usmerjeni na teku po denarju in smo še; tako ni več časa, da bi brali, mislili in niti, da bi molili. Ko je slovenskemu farmarju smrt iztrgala ženo v najlepših letih, je šele ugotovil, da ni imel nikdar časa ne za cerkev, ne za Boga. Tistim, ki ste zapuščeni, osamljeni, svetujem: Zamislite si, da ste v veliki cerkvi, da pojejo Marijine pesmi, da imajo V Čakajo nas težke preizkušnje (Nadaljevanje s str. 2) asimiliran. In če tudi v sami Sloveniji pri osebnih stikih vidi le »asimiliranega Slovenca«, se začne spraševati, če Slovenec še ni asimiliran popolnoma in kakšen je sploh še smisel slovenskih posebnosti. Slovenec se kaže kot nekaj prehodnega. Na vsakem sejmu sredi Ljubljane samo slovenska podjetja opremljajo eksponate s slovenskimi napisi, drugi pa vsak po svoje, kakor se komu zahoče. Na katerem drugem mednarodnem sejmišču je kdo videl kaj takega? Če se ob tem spomnimo še znamenite bohinjske proslave (na kateri je Stane Dolanc, sedaj slovenski predstavnik v najvišjem jugoslovanskem vladnem telesu, predsedstvu SFRJ, govoril v srbohrvaščini, op. ur. AD), ni moč tajiti, da je nekaj hudo narobe z našim čutom za nacionalno dostojanstvo pri slovenski politični in gospodarski oblasti. Slovenščina nima suverene veljave; nima sija nedotakljivosti, ki je lastna jezikom suverenih narodov. Skoraj nič se ne zavedamo, lahko pa že občutimo, in kmalu bomo občutili še bolj, kako nevaren je za nas vse položaj, v katerega smo se pustili zediniti pravzaprav prostovoljno. Ali je spričo tega kaj čudnega, če je na jugoslovanskem zboru prosvetnih delavcev sprejet z žvižgi? Natanko tako kot v Trstu, kot v Celovcu. Peter Handke je izkazal najgloblje poznavanje slovenskih manjšinskih razmer, ko je pred časom preprosto ugotovil: »V Avstriji živi slovenska manjšina, okrog sto tisoč ljudi, kar je četrtina prebivalcev Koroške. Toda, ker so preplašeni in bojazljivi, si ne upajo javno izrekati svojega slovenstva... To se upa kakih deset tisoč ljudi...« V mnogih vplivnih krogih v Jugoslaviji se širi prepričanje, da je moč vse nemajhne težave te države, vso njeno krizo odpraviti s pogromom zoper »moteče« posebnosti, torej s popolnim poenotenjem. V takih očeh se kažemo kot nekakšna državna bolezen, ki jo je mogoče odpraviti, ukiniti. S svojim malodušnim vedenjem se tako nastavljamo za hvaležno tarčo kakega unitarnega jugo-fašizma, oziroma za en sam vzrok vseh težav in družbenega razkroja; sprejemamo vlogo nekakšnega »židovskega bacila« v kakšnem prihodnjem scenariju. Kako tragična je bila zmota nemških Židov, da se bodo z asimilacijo zavarovali pred pogromi! Ne da se dovolj močno poudariti, kako nevarno je naše manjšinsko malodušje. Slovenci sodimo med tiste narode, ki si še niso izborili razmer za organski politični, gospodarski in kulturni razvoj. To je danes povsem očitno. Vse to nas še čaka; poslovimo se od iluzij, da nam kateri koli način sožitja, naj bo še tako dobro mišljen ali zastavljen, to jamči že sam od sebe, po svoji naravi. Najprej moramo sami doumeti, da se z veljavo slovenščine v Jugoslaviji — pa tudi v naši zamejski soseščini — širi in utrjuje duh, ki ga ta jezik po svoji naravi nosi s seboj: duh narodne enakopravnosti, — in duh zaupanja. Brez tega ne more biti nikakršne demokracije in nikakršne človeka vredne prihodnosti. Čakajo nas težke preizkušnje. pete Marijine litanije. Začnite peti, pojte naglas, odpojte vse odpeve! Lažje vam bo in še bolj zdravi boste! Le zakaj se pete litanije Marijine ne pojejo velikokrat? Zopet premalo časa? Slovenskim župnijam pa svetujem: Pripeljite vsak dvakrat na leto iz slovenske šole otroke v cerkev, da skupno počistijo cerkev in župnišče. Otroci se bodo radi spominjali, kako so skupno vsi delali. Le zakaj bi moral biti v veliki cerkvi samo eden, če pa je v fari toliko mladine? Kako, da so naši predniki lahko toliko napravili za slovensko skupnost? Koncert je bil v kapeli samostana sv. Jožefa na Layton Blvd. v južnem delu mesta. Kapela je sicer ena najlepših cerkva v Milwaukeeju in po akustiki ter močnimi orglami zelo primerna za koncerte. Pobudnik za koncert pa je bil prof. glasbe na tej univerzi in pevovodja slovenskega pevskega zbora Gallus, dr. Leo Muškatevec. Poleg zbora Gallus, ki je zelo napredoval od lani, sta sodelovala tudi zbor iz fare Sv. Janeza v Greenfieldu (pevo-vodkinja Mici Bergant) in Slovenska pesem iz Chicaga. Ta zbor vodi p. dr. Vendelin Špendov in šteje 50 pevcev in pevk. Spored pesmi in imena skla-datljev sta napovedovala v slovenščini Vlado Kralj, v angleščini pa Izabela Kralj-Bambi-čeva. Gallusov zbor je zapel 6 pesmi, zbor sv. Janeza 5, Slovenska pesem pa dve pesmi in kantato Turki na Slevici s solistoma Nandi Puc in Branko Magajne. Po koncertu je sledilo presenečenje: Na osnovi že omenjenega Jelenčevega sklada in po posredovanju prof. Muška-tevca je bila podeljena lepa plaketa neumornemu pevovodju in skladatelju, frančiškanskemu patru dr. Vendelinu Špendovu. Plaketo je izročil prof. Muškatevec. O življenjski poti p. dr. Špendova je govoril župnik pri Sv. Janezu p. Lovrenc Grom. Ta opis prilagam temu spisu. Po slovesnosti izročitve plakete so na koru vsi trije zbori zapeli dve p. Špendovi sklad- bi. Bila je najmogočnejša točka izrednega koncertnega večera. Dodal bi rad čisto osebno, da sta naredila na mene najgloblji vtis pesem »Ko zarja zlati nam gore«, ki gane srce in privabi solze, in pa kantata »Turki na Slevici«. Nisem poklican, da bi ocenjeval pesmi, kar sem pa zapisal, sem povedal iz srca. Menim, da dr. Špendov spada med najboljše slovenske mojstre, med take kot sta bila na primer F. Kimovec in p. Hugolin Sattner. Iskrene čestitke, p. dr. Špendov, in Bog Vas živi! Kratek življenjepis p. dr. Vendelina Špendova Rojen je bil 1. oktobra 1921 kot prvi od sedmih otrok v družini Antona in Ivane Špendov. V mašnika, člana frančiškanskega reda je bil posvečen 1947. leta, bogoslovje je študiral v Rimu na frančiškanski papeški univerzi Antonianum. Leta 1950. je bil dodeljen župniji sv. Štefana v Chicagu kot organist in duhovni pomočnik. V letih 1968 do 1974 ga najdemo v Rimu in Ljubljani, kjer je bil ravnatelj kora frančiškanski cerkvi. Od 1980. leta je župnik pri Sv. Štefanu v Chicagu. Oče p. Vendelina je bil organist v domači cerkvi polnih sedemdeset let. Zato ni čudno, da si je sin vedno prizadeval, da bi se čimbolj izobrazil v glasbi. To znanje si je pridobil na višji glasbeni šoli univerze DePaul v Chicagu, kjer je dosegel naslov »M.A.« iz glasbe, s specializacijo v kompoziciji in orglah. Na papeški glasbeni univerzi v Rimu pa je doktoriral ter pripravil disertacijo z naslovom »Slovenska orgelska glasba«. Vseskozi se je p. dr. Vendelin glasbeno udejstvoval kot organist, pevovodja in skladatelj. Z zbori je skozi leta prirejal koncerte, nastopil z njimi na televiziji in na radijskih oddajah ter na različnih prireditvah mednarodnega oziroma mednarodnostnega značaja. Odkar je pri Sv. Štefanu v Chicagu župnik, je vodstvo cerkvenega zbora izročil mlajši moči — Janezu Arkotu, sam pa še vodi zbor »Slovenska pesem«, s katerim prireja kon- certe in gostovanja. S tem / >-rom petdesetih glasov predstavlja slovensko pesem in kulturo tako rojakom kot tuje-rodcem. Na programih so narodne in umetne slovenske skladbe. V tisku so izšle naslednje skla/dbe p. dr. Špendova: »6 Marijinih pesmi«, 1958; »Marija, Mati«, 1970. Več skladb pa je priobčenih \ Ave Maria (Lemont, 111.) in v različnih letnikih Cerkveni glasbenik (Ljubljana). (Op. ur. — Naštetih je več drugih skladb, vendar seznam ni strokovno pripravljen in zato jih ne bom objavil. Ako bi lahko dobil pravo bibliografijo dr. Rozina Oh, zopet ta sneg Letos je predvsem v vzhodnih predelih naše dežele sneg precej dolgo prizanašal, je pa kar dobro zasipal zahodne in severnozahodne pokrajine, celo nekatere južne države so letos izjemoma že bile pokrite z belo odejo. Vse bi bilo lepo, če ne bi bilo treba snega odmetavati na pločniku pred hišo in iz dohodov v hišo. Mladi ljudje gredo že zgodaj na delo, starejši so pa doma. Vajeni dela, se težko vzdržijo, da ne bi vzeli v roke lopato in odmetali sneg izpred hiše. Toda za marsikaterega starejšega človeka - moškega ali žensko - je ta vnema za delo že postala usodna. Mnogi se zgrudijo kar pri odmetavanju snega, še več pa jih omahne, ko pridejo v hišo na toplo. Odmetavanje snega postaja nevarno že za ljudi, ki so prekoračili 50 let starosti in se z leti povečuje. Čez 60 let starosti je že močno odsvetovano, čez 65 let starosti pa je tveganje že smrtno nevarno. Naj več seveda zavisi od telesnega zdravja, posebno od srca, in koliko se človek redno giblje pri vsakdanjih opravkih. Bolj kdo v miru preživlja svoja stara leta in kar obsedi pred televižnom, potem pa kar naenkrat prekine dolgotrajno telesno mirovanje z odmetavanjem težkega snega, večja je nevarnost, da mu srce odpove zaradi nenavaj enega napora. Zato je odmetavanje snega nevarno predvsem upokojencem, ki so se že odvadili težkega dela. Zdravniki pa dajejo nekaj splošnih nasvetov za vse, ki se pač ne morejo izogniti odmetavanju snega brez ozira, ali so še vmlajših letih in za starejše ljudi. Oblecite bolj lahko toplo obleko, da se more telesna toplota polagoma zračiti, ko se pri delu preveč ogrejete. Zavarujte si glavo in ušesa, ker prav pri glavi uhaja največ telesne toplote. Nikakor ne začnite odmetavati snega eno uro po jedi - kosilu ali večerji. Polni želodec zahteva več krvnega obtoka in tako obteži srce, ki je že itak obremenjeno zaradi težkega dela pri odmetavanju snega. It began with a Mass at St. Mary Church on Holmes Ave. whose pastor and staunch supporter of the Bishop. Next was a large group of men, women and children all dressed in our Slovenian National costumes. One young mother held an infant in arms, also dressed in the national outfit. Then followed over a dozen priests from our neighboring parishes attired in their priestly robes. In breath-taking splendor behind this colorful procession came Abbot Jerome Koval of St. Benedictine Abbey, the main celebrant. Rev. Father Jerome Turins spoke on the life and hardships of Bishop Baraga which I’m sure touched many hearts. Even though the Mass was in English, Slovenian singing prevailed. The choir was in excellent form. After Mass those with dinner reservations went to the Slovenian Home. Many were disappointed because only 400 tickets were sold — months in advance. Dinner was family style prepared by Woman of the Year of all the Slovenian Homes, Mrs. Julie Zalar. She has a wonderful crew of workers who serve so willingly and graciously on any request. Master of Ceremonies was Father Victor Tome who enlightened people unfamiliar with the reasons for observing Bishop Baraga Day. He also expressed his sincere thanks to all in attendance for making this day so special. His big surprise to all of us was his announcement that he will send a check for $5,000 to the Baraga Cause donated mostly by his parishioners and other benefactors. A thunderous applause filled the auditorium. Mentioned also by Father Tome was the untiring efforts of Mrs. Frances Novak, a St. Vitus Church parishioner who went door to door and by telephone seeking donations. Her efforts netted $1,787 for Baraga’s Cause. She also was given a big round of applause and her pastor, Rev. Joseph Boznar, beamed with pride. Visiting priest Rev. Fr. France Codec spoke in Slovenian. He is from Slovenia, Yugoslavia. Other speakers were Fr. Bruening, former assistant at St. Vitus (not a Slovenian but very dedicated to the Baraga Cause), and Frank J. Lausche and Joseph Vrtačnik at St. Mary Church on Baraga Sunday. Senator Frank Lausche. Last on the roster was his Excellency, Abbot Koval who warmly greeted all and spoke briefly on Baraga’s canonization possibilities. He led the group in singing Happy Birthday to Sen. Lausche. Entertainment was provided by Mr. Rudolph Knez and his choir. Thus ended a most memorable day thanks to Rev. Victor Tome. His time and dedication as the Shepherd of his St. Mary’s flock can never be measured nor equaled. Our Blessed Mother, the patron of his church must love him very much. Four Slovene Franciscans Served in US This past summer four young Franciscan Friars came to America from Slovenia. One was an ordained priest, the other three are students in Theology preparing for the priesthood. Father Christian Gostechnik came to St. Stephen’s Church in Chicago. He is now doing parish work there while also helping at pilgrimages and other services in nearby Le-mont. Besides these activities Fr. Christian is also taking a psychology course at Loyola University in Chicago. Friar Miran Plohl was assigned to St. John the Evangelist Church in Greenfield (Milwaukee), Wisconsin; Friar David Srumpf to St. Joseph’s Parish in Joliet; Friar Tone Gorjup to St. Cyril’s Church in New York City. The young Franciscan students spent the summer learning and using English, assisting in parish activities and becoming accustomed to American ways and people. Since all these cities have a significant number of Slovenian-speaking people, these young friars were able to offer a Franciscan-Slovene witness and presence to people of their own nationality, some of whom have been in the United States for decades, others came after World War II, in the early ’50s. All reports indicate this program met with success in all the parishes. The three student-friars returned to their studies in Ljubljana in August and September. It is hoped we can expect some of these Franciscans and others to come to our shores as ordained priests to carry on the work of the Church in Slovene-American communities. This would be a case of history repeating itself. It was soon after the turn of this century that the first Slovene Franciscans came to work among Slovene immigrants in this country, assuring them of service and ministry in a language they could understand. The Holy Family Society of the U.S.A., a society founded by Slovenes in Joliet, Illinois, over 70 years ago is spearheading an effort to cover expenses of bringing the young Franciscans here. Fr. Lawrence Grom, O.F.M., pastor of St. John the Evangelist parish in Greenfield, Wisconsin, is the Spiritual Director of the Society, which handles life and health insurance for thousands of Catholics in America. When Father Lawrence proposed the program a year ago, the Society initiated a fund and asked him to administer it. In 1985 the fund took care of a number of major expenses in the project. The society helped cover travel, study expenses and health insurance costs of the young friars with the aid of some local groups. The Slovene League in Joliet helped finance David’s summer; St. Cyril’s parish people covered transportation costs for Tone. The Society fund paid for travel costs and most other expenses for Miran in Milwaukee and Father Christian in Chicago. Father Lawrence and the Holy Family Society believe that vocations and the education of seminarians should be the concern of all the faithful. While the effort so far has been small, they hope it will con- tinue next year with the young friars returning and perhaps ordained Franciscans helping in parishes here in our country. The Society was very happy that the young seminarians were so enthusiastically received and accepted and that the Joliet Slovene League and the St. Cyril parishioners did aid financially. They are hoping that other organizations, national, regional, local and individuals who are concerned about the shortage of priests and religious, will begin to offer their moral and financial support. Election after election he has demonstrated a popularity no other Ohioan has ever achieved. I am often asked what sort of a boss was Frank? A few insights can be gleaned from his approach to problems or challenges and some personal vignette of the Lausche years as remembered by my wife, Eleanor, and me. As a result the Health and Welfare Departments received the bulk of the accumulated savings. Humaneness typifies our honoree . . . and when the East Ohio tragedy struck this very area he stopped all politicking — during a campaign, no less. People came first! Political and fiscal reform were followed by gigantic struggles against an unfair utility rate structure and unfair oil depletion allowances. Strip mining of coal in southeastern Ohio left scars and still another reform followed. The Department of Natural Resources was created. Ohio natural resources were managed, not exploited. Large tracts of land were acquired for forests, wildlife development, parks and water impoundments. The nationally acclaimed Plant Ohio Green was proclaimed and implemented. A DAY AT THE OFFICE Lausche’s day always began early, often with a breakfast at the mansion for certain directors depending on the problem under consideration. Then down to the Statehouse, a look at the mail followed by dictation of letters and official papers. Requests from youth groups for appearances uniformly met with approval! Before and after lunch, numerous appointments and during spring months many high school seniors, visiting the statehouse, were personally greeted. The Governor had great fun addressing these eager boys and girls and directing their choice of a “governor and his cabinet”. DAYS TO REMEMBER But certain days were not so pleasant. I remember particularly the Spring Street Penitentiary riot which occurred on the Friday before one of Frank’s most hard fought elections. I was privileged to accompany the Governor that night. He listened to Warden Alvis, gave instructions and then stayed on the scene most of the night until the uprising was quelled. Early Saturday morning, without a moment of sleep, the Governor headed for Cleveland tp, the traditional City Club debate. Despite the riot, the lack of rest and a feared political opponent, the presentation went off smoothly. Frank never won bigger as Governor. His fierce independence transcended political, management and labor connections. Other days and nights which I shall never forget were those when a convicted murderer, where a jury did not recommend mercy, and execution in the electric chair. . . These proved a terrific strain on the chief executive. The lights burned late because this conscientious official read the volumnious record. This is a compassionate man, a sincere person, a decent citizen. Frank, I don’t know whether or not the Pryatels and the Moulton, the Corrigans, Lokars, Thomases, Thompsons, and Lochers were ever able to be of real help to you, but I do know that your high principles and dedication and senses of values gave all of us the ability to better face the challenges which confronted us! Frank Secretary As we approach the closing days of the year, the officers and members of the St. Clair Pensioners Club expresses their thanks and appreciation to the editors and staff of the American Home for their support by acceptance and printing of our monthly submitted articles. We know this publicity has brought our Club to the attention of the readers of the American Home and has, in some degree, helped the Club in its growth. I next must comment on the continued wonderful attendance at our meetings throughout the year with a record setting attendance of 102 at the November meet. A pleasant surprise for the members was the appearance of our newly elected councilman of Ward 13, Gus Frangos. After his introduction, Gus spoke briefly, thanking the residents of the area for their confidence and support during his campaign. As our new councilman, he urged all to jot down the phone number of his office, which is located in the area at 67th and St. Clair. Feel free to contact him with your problems. Frangos said, “f may not be able to solve all of the problems, but you can be sure I will try my best.” The date of the Christmas Dinner for members is Thursday, Dec. 19 at the St. Clair National Home hall. ANTHONY AMBROŽ# Toronto Christmas — an Ethnic Experience Harrisburg, Pa. — The holiday season will take on a festive glow again this year in Pennsylvania with the sixth annual “Christmas ... An Ethnic Experience” program. The Governor’s Heritage Affairs Advisory Commission and the State Museum of Pennsylvania, acting as cosponsors, have finalized all plans and are prepared to entertain and enchant all those in attendance. The exhibit opens December 8 at the State Museum of Pennsylvania. Governor Dick Thornburgh will take part in the opening ceremony which is scheduled for Dec. 15 at 12:30 P-m. in the museum auditorium. Ethnic performers from various parts of the Com-nionwealth will be on hand to entertain for the opening ceremony and on Dec. 22. The exhibit closes Jan. 11. Twenty-six decorated trees w*ll grace the Loggia gallery, the largest exhibition in the history of the program. Each tree will represent a different ethnic community and be decorated in a manner that depicts the culture and traditions of that group. Many hours of hard work, on the part of all groups involved, 8o into making this program a colorful, festive, and entertaining holiday event that should not be missed. You’ll need: Stamp pad: felt pen with a fine tip; notepaper Press your finger on the stamp pad and then on notepaper. By using fingers and thumb, and by rolling the finger, you can r^ake a variety of shapes and sizes of prints. • Now use your imagination to decorate the fingerprints. What do they look like? Pussy willows? Butterflies? Kittens? Use the felt pen to add stalks to pussy willows, stems to flowers, tail and ears to cats, or to outline butterfly wings. • One-color designs are very attractive, but you can print notepaper in more than one color if you have stamp pads and pens in different colors. Crack English walnuts so that the two halves of the shells come apart. Take out the nutmeats. Put a small gift in each shell—a thimble in Mother’s, a shiny penny in Daddy’s, a ring in Sister’s. Recipe 1 BREAKFAST CHRISTMAS TREE Packaged crescent rolls let you create this festive, eyecatching treat fast. Preheat oven to 375°F. Slice 2 packages refrigerated crescent rolls (do not unroll) into 11 equal pieces and flatten. On ungreased cookie sheet arrange 10 pieces in a triangle to form tree. Use last piece as trunk. Combine 2 tablespoons melted butter or margarine, 3 tablespoons sugar and 1 teaspoon grated orange peel; brush over dough. Bake 20 minutes. Meanwhile, cream 2 ounces cream cheese with 1 cup sifted confectioners’ sugar and 2 tablespoons orange juice. Brush over baked rolls and sprinkle with red and green decorating sugar. HARVEST WREATH SALAD 1 package (12 oz.) cranberries, coarsely chopped 1/2 cup sugar Dressing: 1/4 cup lime juice 1 teaspoon sugar 2 teaspoons DiJon mustard 3/4 teaspoon salt 2/3 cup olive oil 3 large Granny Smith or other tart green apples, cored and cut into small pieces 2 large red apples, cored and cut into small pieces 1/2 cup diced celery 1/2 cup thinly sliced green onions 1 head Boston lettuce 11/2 cups toasted walnuts* 1 tablespoon grated lime peel In medium bowl combine cranberries and sugar; toss well. Cover and refrigerate 6 hours or overnight. Dressing: In small bowl combine lime juice, sugar, mustard and salt. Whisk in oil in a slow, steady stream until dressing is slightly thickened. In medium bowl combine green and red apples, celery and green onions. Pour on dressing; toss well. Cover and refrigerate 1 to 2 hours. Separate lettuce leaves and arrange on large serving platter. Toss walnuts with apple mixture. Arrange around outer rim of platter. Spoon cranberries in center. Sprinkle lime peel on salad. It was the largest pilgrimage thus far. The fact it was a beautiful autumn day, sunny but cool, undoubtedly helped to swell the ranks of worshippers. Seven bus loads from Cleveland’s four Slovenian parishes and Barberton, and Lorain as well as individual cars brought friends together from as far away as Toronto in Canada and Detroit and Milwaukee in the U.S. Services were held in the new fine modern structure, an open-air church not far from the original church of Our Lady. The Rev. Bishop Edward Pevec, Auxiliary Bishop of Cleveland, was the celebrant of the holy sacrifice of the Mass. He was assisted by the Rev. Fortunat Zorman, OFM, of Lemont. He delivered the sermon, saying we must forgive our enemies, even those of the revolution in Slovenia. We must not forget, though, all of our Slovenian brothers and sisters, some of them dearly related, who sacrificed their lives in a revolution. In the afternoon the entire entourage made the Stations of the Cross in the open wooded area. Leading the procession was Father Fortunat Zorman. Others priests present were the Rev. Paul Krajnik of Lorain, and Rev. Franc Godec of Slovenia who was staying at St. Mary’s in Collinwood during his brief sojourn in the U.S. Many old time Friends met from far away places. We saw Rudi Knez, Prof. Janez Grum, Ottmar Mausar of Toronto, Mr. and Mrs. Anton Oblak, Lojze Bajc, Jože Melaher, Mr. and Mrs. John Petrič. The newly-elected president of the Borci, Ciril Prezelj, was also in attendance. The special memorial services for the victims of the revolution in Slovenia, especially for the 12,000 slaughtered guard- smen, were concluded with Benediction. Although the pilgrimage was a sad event on one of the last beautiful autumn Sundays, the event ended on a happy note of hope and forgiveness for the future of our Slovenian nation. And as she was doing her daily housework, she sang. She didn’t realize the song she was singing had never been sung before. She had composed it. Quickly she recorded that melody and on a reel to reel tape recorder. That was the beginning of her song writing career that has spanned 20 years with many, many songs written and words put to music since. Her writing style is modern as today and as old as yesterday. I’m talking about music to worship our Lord, to give Jesus Christ praise. To glorify him through our lives. Reproduced here is her first song, “The Old Fashioned Gospel Way.” The song calls us as creations of our Lord to return to the way our fathers and mothers and grandparents worshipped long ago, to trust, not change, to walk with Jesus through this life and to praise him. Šuster (D-Euclid) announces the introduction of House Bill 758 which seeks to protect one of Ohio’s largest service industries and safeguard the consumer. The intent is to shield the travel industry from those who may be unscrupulous in arranging travel and attendant services and the consumer who may fall prey. “House Bill 758 is an excellent piece of legislation,” said Representative Šuster. “The regulations proposed by this bill would more closely guard the ranks of the travel industry, enhancing its credibility and protecting the rights of the consumer.” House Bill 758 retains the distinction between “travel agency” and “tour promoter” implicit in previous regulation, although the latter is changed to “seller of travel,” a term synonymous with its function in the industry. The proposed legislation would define “travel agency” as any person who is an officially appointed agent of the airlines reporting corporation or the international airlines travel agent network for the sale of tickets. “Seller of travel” means any person selling transportation costing more than $50 per person and which may include transfers to and from an airport or other point of arrival, lodging with or without meals, sightseeing at one or more destinations, and any other services provided in connection with transporting passengers and their baggage. House Bill 758 solicits travel arrangement business to register with the Secretary of State. This provision protects the consumer by requiring such organization to disclose a principal business address, the name and address of an owner or chief executive and. operating officers, and other names under which the busines operates and additional locations. In order to register, a travel agent or seller of travel must be bonded or guaranteed by a letter of credit for $50,000. Those currently registered in the State will not have to reregister, unless prior federal authorization has expired. However, House Bill 758 mandates that both pay a Cl0.00 annual renewal fee. “House Bill 758 would allow a consumer to void a contract with a travel business that is not properly registered. Dripping it into hot oil to make a spiral shape cake. Fry both sides. Dust w/powd. sugar. * * * There are many different ways to make apple strudel. Here's one that's good. QUICK APPLE STRUDEL 2 cups sifted flour 3 tsp baking pwd. 1 tsp salt 2 Tbsp. sugar 4 Tbsp shortening 1/2 cups and 1 tsp milk Filling: 2 cups chopped apples 1/2 tsp cinnamon 2 tsp tapioca or corn starch Mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and shortening just like for a pie crust. Then add the milk and knead it in so the dough becomes soft and easy to handle. Roll out the dough on a floured surface and spread with soft butter and then the apple filling. Roll gently and brush the top with some milk. Sprinkle with sugar and bake in a 400 degree oven for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees and bake for another 20 minutes. While still warm, sprinkle with confectioners sugar and nuts. LAZY MAN CHICKEN DINNER 1 cup any biscuit mix 1 teas, paprika 2 teas, salt 1/4 cup oleo 1/4 teas, pepper 1 cut up frying chicken (or equivalent legs and breast) Preheat oven to 425. Melt oleo in 9x13x2 pan or any oblong near that size. Mix dry ingredients in a paper bag and put in pieces of chicken. Shake to coat thoroughly. Lay chicken skin side down in single layers in hot oleo. Bake uncovered for 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours. 1 have used this method for at least 20 years or more. Grease an 8-inch square baking pan. In mediumsized bowl, cream butter and brown sugar; add almond extract. In another medium-sized bowl, combine flour, baking powder and oats. Add dry ingredients to creamed mixture; mix until crumbly. Reserve 1 cup mixture. Firmly pat remaining mixture into prepared pan. Spread with cherry preserves to within 1/4-inch border of edge. Top with reserved crumbs; pat down lightly. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, or until lightly browned. Cool in pan. Cut into 1 1/2 x 2-inch bars. HAM AND BROCCOLI CASSEROLE 4 cups cubed cooked ham 2 packages (10 ounces each) frozen chopped broccoli, thawed 2 cups pre-cooked rice (right from the box) 2 cans condensed cream of chicken soup 11/2 cup milk 4 tablespoons margarine, melted 1 jar (8-ounce) cheese whiz 1/2 cup chopped onion 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce Combine and mix together all ingredients in a casserole. Bake, uncovered, at 350 degrees un-til bubbly, about 45 minutes. Serves 8. WALNUT PIE Servings: Makes one 8- or 9-inch pie. Preparation time: about 20 minutes. Last Friday morning, Dec. 6 we printed and mailed a 12-page edition of the American Home newspaper. Some were distributed by delivery persons in the St. Clair area, Collinwood, Nottingham, and Euclid. The rest, as usual were mailed. They were taken to the Main Post Office in Cleveland at 11:30 a.m. As of this writing on Wednesday, no one has received last Friday’s paper. The Post Office claims they are not in Cleveland, they are not at any branches and they have no idea where the Ameriška Domovinas have gone. We have received hundreds of complaints and our phones are constantly ringing from our customers complaining they have not received their papers. We have been unable to do our regular work of securing our yearly Christmas advertisements because we have been only answering the telephone all day long. If you have not received your Dec. 6 (last Friday) paper yet, please call your local post office and complain and then call the main post office and complain. If you don’t complain to them, they will not make sure the paper is processed as it should be. Because we publish more than once a week, our paper by Post Office regulations, is supposed to have the highest priority and travel first class and be delivered in the Cleveland area the next day. We are trying our best to put out a paper twice a week and we expect the Post Office to do their job of distributing it to our subscribers. This past February we purchased a mailing computer so all labels are CLEAR, and they are self-sticking so they are legible and they will not fall off. It is more expensive to do the mailing this way, but we feel it is worth it so our customers will have the best chance of receiving their paper as soon as possible. A Post Office supervisor told us the Jewish News always comes on time because they bitterly complain when it is not delivered the next day. If we want to receive the services we are paying for, we must register our complaints and not be afraid to speak out. The squeaky wheel gets the oil. If each customer complains, believe me, the Post Office will try their darndest to make sure the paper goes through if only because they won’t have to listen to our griping. If the paper does not come through by this week, we will reprint it and mail it again. Madeline feels we are being discriminated against because it is in Slovenian on the front page and there might be someone who thinks, “These people won’t even know the difference if we dump the papers in the garbage or play a good joke on them and send the entire shipment to Detroit so it’ll take a couple of weeks before they (Continued on page 10) I I i I I f f | f s J.F. Sušnik in s'noV^jj f if if i 15 States, Canada at Thanksgiving Event By Tony Petkovšek Even though it’s been happening every T hanksgiving for almost a quarter of a century, it is still an amazing thing to witness the Thanksgiving Polka Party extravaganza from start to finish in terms of the enthusiasm from those in attendance . and the tremendous crew of about 100 volunteers working in con-juncton with the Cleveland Slovenian Radio Club committee. While all three major television news programs gave ample coverage, TV-3 was on the scene “live” at 6 p.m. at the opening as hundreds stormed the doors and filled the upper arena-like hall to near capacity within a half hour. The event was held at St. Joseph High Auditorium at E. 185th Street and Lake Shore Boulevard. There were young and old, People from at least 15 States and Canada, and bands revolving in three areas. Every known musician in the Slovenian music field from Tankovic on down was sprinkled in the throngs plus the distinguished 90 year-old °rmer mayor, governor, and senator Frank Lausche, mak-•ng his first appearance at the gathering, gave a stirring Patriotic brief address. A new ook written by Professor Ed °betz of Kent State Universi-titled, “Ohio’s Lincoln, tank J. Lausche”, is due out V the end of the year. The state of Minnesota was fluted by the cities of eveland and Euclid and the tate of Ohio. The dance and show on the °hday night, November 28, was the climax of a whole Weekend of special polka ^'tts at area Slovenian 0nies and tavern-testaurants. There were about a dozen locations going strong including the Holidome of the Holiday Inn Wickliffe which had daily jam sessions and a well attended Polka Mass on Saturday, November 30, celebrated by Father Balasko and music featuring Johnny Krizancic of “Zivala Brača” fame. Picture the first such event in 1963, a one band dance at the Slovenian Home on St. Clair Avenue, when they said it would never work on Thanksgiving since it was a family day and also it was the week President Kennedy was assassinated. Now picture what it will be like when next year, 1986, marks the 25th anniversary of Cleveland and America’s longest running daily polka and ethnic radio program currently broadcast on WELW-AM, NBN cable, and WCPN-FM. With the right kind of weather as we’ve had for the past 24 years and the per-sistance of the polka public, it could very likely be a real blockbuster!
