Miss Frances Bogovich was hostess to the guests on Sunday. Madames Krek and Furlan gave a vivid picture of the prevailing conditions in Jugoslavia and told of their many experiences during the surprise attack by the Nazis. Madame Krek's last residence in Jugoslavia was in Belgrade where her husband was Minister of State before the outbreak of the war. She related many incidents that confronted her and her six year old son, Alesh, while fleeing from the enemy lines. Madame Furlan traveled with her husband, son and daughter. But her son, Boris, 20 years old, stayed in Jugoslavia. They also told of their many experiences in Africa and many other places where they had to wait for connections to continue their journey. Although their destination was America, they did not know just where they would have to establish their home. Everything depended on transportation facilities and that made their traveling a journey of worry and hardships. They are very happy in America and for them war will not end too soon if the day should be tomorrow because they have faced the sufferings and know the cruelty the folks in Europe must bear. The attendance at this benefit performance was very good. Th^ program went off very smoothly and the participants on the program did an excellent job and are to be congratulated. The dance in the evening also brought many young folks together and everyone had an enjoyable evening. Madames Krek and Furlan were presented with lapel watches as a remembrance from their Slovene friends and a token of appreciation for accepting the invitation. On Monday, Mrs. J. W. Mally entertained with a tea party at her Mentor home. The guests returned to New York on Wednesday morning. The first 1942 Orel Outing will be held Sunday, June 7. On his suggestion, the State Council at Then decided to simultaneously attack Ljudevit from three points. In the spring of 820, practically the entire vast empire of the Franks arose in arms to crush the heroic Slovene duke. Three mammoth armies, composed of Franks, Bavarians, Saxons, and Italians, began their march towards the Sava River against the united Slovenes, Croats and Serbs. One army advanced from Italy along the old Roman road across Hruščica and Ljubljana. This army could get nowhere because Ljudevit's soldiers successfully prevented its crossing the Alpine slopes. The northern division marched along the Danube into upper Panonia with intention of striking into Croatian territory by way of thd Drava River. This army consistently was held back from crossing the Drava River by Ljudevit's adherents. The third division, movingi across Carinthia, fared the best. Three times they met Ljudevit's army, and on each occasion vastly superior numbers settled in the Frank's favor. Ljudevit was forced to retreat, and the Franks crossed the Drava River to overrun Croatia. This opened the way for the other two divisions. Ljudevit retreated to an impregnable fortification at Si- sak, whilst his followers scat-tered and hid in the forests and swamps. The armies ctf the j Franks now freely looted the country of the Slovenes and the Croats. The Carnialians and Carinthians were again forced to acknowledge Count Baldric as their ruler and the Franks as their over lords. In spite of all the victories, the Franks did not achieve complete success, because' Ljudevit's power was not completely crushed. The following year (821) the Franks again laid plans to subdue the southern Slavs, by sending another three armies into the lands of the Slavs for the express purpose of plundering and pillaging, expecting that by this means they could completely quell their rebellious spirits. Ljudevit was fully aware of these intentions and, s^nce he saw that it was foolhardy to meet the enemies in the open, he now began to build fortifi-j cations into which his adher-! ents could retire in times of invasions. A number of these fortifications had no more vthan been built when the three armies of the Franks appeared on the scene, j They pillaged and looted for a while, but left tin a short time, feeling that this invasion was not as successful as it I was expected to be. Their leaders reported to their State Council and the emperor, that | they were unable to defeat Ljudevit because he refused to come out of his fortifications. In the next year, namely 822, another Frank army, the tenth in number, was recruited in Italy. Ljudevit could have remained in his stronghold, but feeling that his people had suffered excessively from the enemy's looting, he decided to avert another such catastrophe by leaving his headquarters at Sisak and fleeing to the Dalmatian Serbs. Following a personal dispute, he left this seclusion and went to an uncle of Borno, where he was treacherously assassinated. The Franks now had little or no difficulty in subduing the rebels because o flack of proper leadership. This rebellion of the Slovenes and Croats had its sad repercussions. They now lost their native princes and rulers, in whose stead the Franks placed German counts throughout Carinthia and Croatia. The German nobility now permanently established itself in the Slovene lands where Slovene independence died for over one thousand years, being revived only after the last World War when most of the Slovenes became a part of Yugoslavia. 600,000 of them were ruthlessly and unwillingly given to Italy by an unjust and totally blinded and bias commission, a like number of Slovenes in Styria and Carinthia shared the same fate falling to despotic and cruel Austria* It is these unfortunate Slovenes who are now sacrificing all, for the time they will again be liberated and be joined with their brethern in Yugoslavia. As in the distant centuries, it was to be the mission of Rome to unite the entire world with its rule and insure a universal peace, since it would embrace all humanity, formulated in a firm unity under one powerful master: From Dante on, there lives in every Italian the consciousness of this mission, and every Italian thinks that he must fulfill this testament and impose upon the world a Roman peace. For us Coastland Slovenes and Croats, the illusion of the poet has become a reality. Rome began to heap its mission upon us.
