Beseda »evharistija« prihaja iz grščine in pomeni »zahvala«. Zato Cerkev obhajanje mašne daritve imenuje »evharistija«, ker se je Jezus pri zadnji večerji, preden je razlomil kruh in punudil kerlih, najprej zahvalil Bogu. Cerkev to nadaljuje. 28. NEDELJA V današnjem evangeliju Jezus opozori, da je pomembno in tudi MED LETOM dolžnost, da se zahvalimo. Ko prispe v neko vas, mu pride naproti deset gobavcev, ki se od daleč ustavijo. Gobavec je po njihovi veri nečist in se ZAHVALNA nikomur ne sme približati. Stara zaveza jim predpisuje, da morajo, kadar se približa kak človek, kričati: »Nečist, nečist« (3 Mz 13,45).
