Program bo vseboval pesmi v zboru, dUetu, sekstetu s tenorsko solo. Z možem sva namreč šla "movie", kjer sva videla film "Wake Island", ki pokazuje, kako so naši ameriški pomorščaki vztrajali do konca proti krvoločnemu Japoncu. . Končno je kongres izvolil stalni odbor, Ameriški slovenski svat, v katerem so zastopsne vse nsše glsvne organizacije. Ta odbor pojde zdaj na delo in dolžnost nss vseh je, da mu zaupamo in ga moralno ter gmotno podpiramott Bratje in sestre, to jo, ju* odbor — odbor vseh ameriških Slovencev. Korsksjmo z njim! Sploh je bil on ustanovitelj tega društva in zvest član jednote 34 let. Prve seje društva so se vršile v njegovem stanovanju. Zapušča žalujočo ženo, tri sinove in tri hčere. Ralph Jerman. Eno leto ameriške vojne Dne 8. decembra je poteklo leto dni, kar so Združene držav*} napovedale vojno Jsponski, Nemčiji in Italiji — to ja drugi dan po razbojniškem napadu na Pearl Harbor na Havajih in na Filipine. Eno leto je preteklo ln v tem času je bil Pearl Harbor najmanj petkratno maščevsn. V prvem letu svoje vojne se je Amerika bojevsla v glavnem z Japonsko in v treh velikih pomorskih bit kah — na Koraljnem morju, pri Midwayju in pri Solomonlh — so bili Jsponci strahovito tepenl; izgubili so čez sto bojnih ladij in čez 500 bojnih leUl. Njena največja preizkušnja in njene največje zmage še le pridejo najbrle v drugem letu njene vojne. Amerika lahko zre v bodočnost z največjim zaupanjem v svojo nepremagljivo moč. Amerika bo zmagala! Amerika bo zmagala z Anglijo. Rusijo in Kitajsko vred. • f ' John Slobodnlk. 408 Vojna je naša - stric Sam smo mi! The question asked here last week regarding our martyred people in their homeland, "Are we big enough to understand this grave situation and to act accordingly?" has been answered positively and affirmatively by the 521 delegates assembled at the First Slovene National Congress in Cleveland on December 5 and 8. 4 The 521 delegates representing all shades of opinion answered the call and performed their national duty with honor! They have met on common ground with a single purpose in mind: to launch an effective political action for the liberation and uni-» «cation of all Slovenia within the framework of a democratic and federated Jugoslavia. This united action was the reault of the spirit which pervaded the assembly throughout the two-day session, a spirit in which personal beliefs and prejudices were laid aside, the realization that only in this way could the main objective be attained. On this exemplary score the delegates of the SNC deserve hearty commendation and congratulation. The work accomplished at the Congress testifies eloquently, that in times such as these, when the very existence of Slovenia is at stake—we are big enough to understand the grave situation and to act accordingly! That when we see our own house in flames we act as one to extinguish the fire lest it destroys our home! That in time of such danger we will use every honest means at our disposal to save it and rebuild its damaged parts! With the positive results achieved at the Congress we have demostrated conclusively that we arc one with the rest of the civilized nations and that our demands are justified politically as well *s culturally and socially. • • • - As expected, the delegates created a permanent organization under the name of the Slovene National Council, for the purpose of carrying out the decisions and will of the Congress. To be sure, the real and actual task lies ahead—a task which can be performed only with the genuine cooperation of all its executive officers elected by the Congress and with the wholehearted backing of all our people in America. Only in this way can the will of the delegates be put into operation. In short, with the creation of the permanent body the real work has only begun. What is needed now is the moral and material support of all, and it is the duty of each and every American of Slovene extraction and birth to help promote our new political action vigorously, knowing that our united efforts are in the interest of our enslaved people In their homeland! • • • Today the Slovenes do not stand alone. Along with the Croats and Serbs they are fighting the oppressors of the enslaved nations. In Slovenia there is hardly a village where the sound of the firing squad has not been followed b> the awful silence of death. The bestialities committed by the Italian and German soldiery must not go unpunished, and the atrocities committed by the Gestapo call for retributions. The Slovenes in America are resolute and united, determined to fight for the rights of their brothers so that after the war they will be repaid for their suffering at least by gaining freedom and the complete unification of their nation. Toward this end the Slovene National Council created at the Cleveland convention is committed to work. The executive committee of the Slovene National Council (SNC), elected by acclamation, includes the following: Etbin Kristan, President; Marie Prisland, 1st Vice President; Janko N. Rogelj, 2nd Vice President; Kazimlr Zakrajlek, Secretary; Joie Zalar, Treasurer; Mlrko Kuhel, Recording Secretary. Other executive officers, whose duties will be determined later, are the following: Vincent Cainkar, Frank Zalts, J. J. Oman, Leo Jurjevec and Dr. F. J. Kern. In addition, a committee of forty has been elected according to districts and the editors of all our papers have been named as honorary members of the SNC. It has been some time since I have written an article, so here goes. I am stationed for the present out here where they grow sugar ration cards right in their back yards. Pineapples, bananas and other tropical fruits a)e as plentiful as oranges in Cslifornia. I am not permitted to say on what island I am stationed, but I can say it is a beautiful place. I know many mothers worry about their sons wh<^re in the service. Every soldier, marine and sailor is ready to do his psrt for Uncle Sam. Until sctusl combat duty calls, there are a great number of us more fortunate members of the service who are getting a thrill ust by enjoying the new jcenery as we move along. I know there are many of you folks that would surely trade places with me to be out her#. We have one grim reminder that we are in combat zone. Every night we have blackouts all over .the island. I am sure most of you can understand how inconvenient it makes everything. I want to thank the SNPJ for the complete service I am getting on the Prosveta, which has been s regular visitor here and appreciated a lot. I would like to see more Young American articles in the paper. I know that most of you are very busy on defense work, but a few lines won't take long to write, so let's hear from the Young Americans Lodge 964. I mot my first SNPJ member since I have been in the service. He Larry Dernovsek from Sheldon, Wisconsin. He was transferred into my battery and is already a well known member of the outfit. You lads and lassies up there in Wisconsin, can be proud of him. I read your article, Hay Travnik. think you will go places if you keep that frame of mind. There really isn't anything to it if you try to get along. I also received a card from Mike Kumer. Mike, as all of you probubly know, is out to get a pa ft* of silver wings. Lota of luck and happy landings. If you should happen to get a chance to fly over Tokyo, drop an extra bomb for the Young Americans. Rudy Grum is also well on his way to get a pair silver wings. Same wishes to you, Rudy. The boys in all services look up to the fliers, not just because they ly overhead, but as long as our boys are overhead we fe^l pretty safe. It Is you folks back home that are making the morale of the boys high out here by the splendid wuy you all are turning out war material. We can't lose thia war with that kind of backing. Only free people will team up the way the Americans have In this emergency. Every plane, gun, ship, and bomb toeing built is surely bringing this war to a speedy and successful conclusion for the Allies.' Before 1 close this article I want to wish each and every one a very Merry Christmas and a Moat Happy New Year. I am hoping that we will sll be home for next Chrlstmaa to expreHtt our greetings in person. Aloha to all! Sgt LEON HOSTNIK. 36114321 Nqtr* 2nd Bn »3rd CA (aa) A. P. The only accepted excuse for being absent will be those working or those on the sick list. The usual card party following our meetings will be dropped until- the January meeting. It is reported that we have Sis. Jos. Urbas and Sis. Mary Gassar on the sick list; Sis. Jos. Urbas is doing nicely at the Philadelphia Hospital. We find Sis. She tells me that ahe spends every day of the week with her "Youths of America". Cicde. and would spend eight days were it posible. The futur^ of the coming year depends on this meeting and I hope that the members that possibly can attend, do so. Due to the great defense works and dimout regulations the social functions of our lodge have been discontinued to a great extent. News Notes When Mrs. Tratar didn't get any answers to her phone calls to Boston, it was believed that % her son Rudie Tratar who is an Ensign in the Navy, might have been one of the victims who perished in the Cocoanut Grove night club fire. Only when she rpceived a telegram that same evening explaining how he, Rudie, was one of the officers who helped in the rescue work, and that he was all right, was she assured that her boy was safe. Nice work, Rudie. The Veronians are proud of you, you who has just .completed six ^months of hard work at the Harward University, from which you graduated. During the month of November two important things happened which will be of a great benefit to bur Veronians. Golden Eagles GIRARD, OHIO.—With the coming of the New Year we find many new developments in the world affairs which are* of much interest to us. In Jugoslavia we hear of resistance to the Axis by the Jugoslavs. In. this fighting by Slovenes, Serbs and Croatian« many lives arc lost and this brings nearer to us the thought that with all the suffering and loss of lives by the Jugoslavs and all others who arc fighting oppression by the Axis should be in our minds as we give our support to the Slovene National Congress. When this article appears, officers who will lead this group, will be chosen to let us be united and make certain that Slovenes in Europe may look forward to our fullest support. During the month of Dec. the SNPJ lodges of the United States and Canada will be electing new leaders for the coming year. The road ahead is not as smooth as it has been the last few years, and we must work harder to keep our lodges intact. DECEMBER 9 PHOSVETA Our Front By Louis • By Without a doubt, the past weekend will mark the actual turning Lnt in the history of our people in 5ns country. For it waa on December 5 and 6 at the first Slovene National Congrea» in Cleveland that the eroundwork for a real united front was laid in the interest of our enslaved people in the old country.* Th<- .positive results accomplished by the 521 delegates who have assembled at the Congresa show very convincingly that we are aware of the grave situation in Slovenia. Accordingly, they have adopted a workable program which commands our attention. All of the delegates understood that the tragedy of Our homeland calls for an immediate action in order to bring about the ultimate liberation and unification of Slovenia and of all its component parts—Primor je, Koroéko, Stajersko and Prekmurje. All the States where our people live were represented at the Congress, as were all our organizations md institutions. Naturally, all shades of beliefs and opinions were represented, but all agreed to act in unison for the main objective: to help our people in a time when they need our help most. It is to the credit of all concerned that their deliberations and decisions reached a conclusion which promises to bear abundant fruit, provided that we do not permit any obstacles in the future to mar our common objective. However, directly before us lies the problem of executing the deci sions adopted by the Congress. These constitute the real work which re quires the united support of all in order that they may become effec tive. The executive board headed by Etbin Kristan, our political au thority and veteran journalist, will need the cooperation of each ope of us. That Kristan enjoys the respect and recognition of all our people, was shown by the fact that he was chosen unanimously by the convention which greeted his election with an ovation. This was my first visit in Cleve land in six years, and I must say that I found my old and new friends in the same old spirit which is so typical of our people in the metropolis. Owing to the brief time I had at my disposal, it was impossible to visit any one as most of my time was taken up by the work in con nection with the Congress. To be sure, my brief but pleasant stay there brought back memories of the year I spent in our metropolis in the mid-twenties. The SNH on St Clair remains the main center of attraction, and this time it was the mecca for more than 500 delegates who came from all parts of the country. History of Coneordettes Drill Team Almost four years ago, on March 29, 1939, a group of young ladles gathered together to discuss the possibilities of organizing a drill team. At that time, the main objective was to furnish an added attraction for membership gains in the newly organized Juvenile Circle, Concordlan Jr». The drill team was organized and within a year, the Concordian Jrs. gained many new members, and Interest In the team grew by leaps and bounds. So great was the interest that an attempt was made to organize a team of boys and girls, but for various reusons, this proved to be unsuccessful. Finally eighteen girls were appointed as members of the 'Coneordettes," and all plunged into work. Officers were elected, rules and regulations were set up, and time was spent studying and rehearsing. Still more time was spent on formations, building up our treasury, and making uniforms. At last, with ell this behind us, we cam to our first exhibition. We will always look back on this as our firat great achievement. The occasion was the first Natioryil SSPZ Juvenile Festival held on May 20, 1940, in Cleveland, Ohio. (SSPZ merged with SNPJ September, 1941.) The darkened hall, the momentary hush, the appearance of Uie Coneordettes, claid in red, white, and blue, the Intricate marching formations, the changing colors of the spotlight, the strains of Repass Band March playod by Pecon's orchestra, the applause, and the proud I^ok on the feces of members, parents, and friends will never be forgotten. The national SNPJ Day celebration held in Cleveland, Ohio, over Labor dav weekend, 1942, was the Hcene of our last exhibition. At that time, the SNPJ juveniles pre-sented "Victory Is Ours," a program with a cast of local and out-of-town talent In tune with the limes, the Coneordettes, colorfully garbed in red, white, and blue, presented "Marching to Victory," a patriotic formation ending in "V" for victory and climaxed by the Star Spangled MUSE, PA—All members of the SNPJ lodge 517 of Muse. WEDNESDAY, PMSMBKR g A Resolution SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF —Th* following resolution was read anrf unanimously adopted at the jUc, Slav Victory Meeting, held flovem" ber 29. 1942, in the Esgles Hall 2: Francisco, Calif. The meeting' ^ addressed by Dr. Ivan Subasic Governor of Crostia, and other speakers, and was presided over bv Dr. John F. Slavich, Mayor of oa/ land. Calif. WHEREAS, we firmly believe in th* principles of Self-determination ttnd abolishment of the rule oI force ss proclaimed in the Atlantic Charter, and consider the Four Freedoms of President Roosevelt as essentia! prerequisite to enable each nation and each individual to enjoy a reasonable measure of security and happiness; and WHEREAS, these principles have been challenged by the Axis powers, who are determined to conquer the world and institute their own rule of brutal force and human slavery; and WHEREAS, the people of the United States of America and the people Of Jugoslavia are united with the other freedom-loving nations of the world in their endeavor to crush the Axis military machine and to liberate all subjugated countries, including Jugoslavia; therefore be it RESOLVED, that we Americans of Jugoslav birth and extraction, residing in the San Francisco Bay area, pledge our wholehearted and unqualified support to the country of our adoption, the United States of America, in its vigorous and successful prosecution of the war and in its endeavor to establish a just and democratic peace; and be it further RESOLVED, that we Americans of Serbian, Croatian and Slovene extraction will furnish whatever aid we can to the despoiled people of Jugoslavia as well as to other nations who have become victims of the Fascist aggression; and be it further RESOLVED, that at the conclusion of this war all the South Slav peoples be enabled to unite on the basis of equality in a truly democratic state and thst, united among themselves, they should strive for the closest collsborstlon with Russia and all other Slav nations of Europe. In behalf of the Jugoslav Victory Committee, as sponsor of this meeting, J. L, Kerpan, Chairman, Peter Obad, Secretary. MATT SPOLER. PHOSVETA This Was "Radical" 100 Years Ago! Dr. Andrew Reminds Us of the First Law Regulating Working Hours; Crowning Victory Came Undqr uNew Deal" , Anniversaries are important events. They serve as a sort of yardstick, and, among other thing* may be used to determine whether the great movements in which we are interested are marching forward or beating s retreat. Dr. John B. Andrews, who for many year* has been the director of the American Association for Labor Legislation, fearing Labor might overlook one of these anniversaries—and an extremely important one—generously sent us the following reminder: "America's first direct protective labor law was enacted just 100 years ago. It was in 1842 that Massachusetts, after a number of discouraging efforts to secure limited education for employed children, finally adopted legislation prohibiting the employment of children in manufacturing establishments for more than 10 hours a day, if they were under 12 years of age. "This 'radical' pioneer step was taken after years of agitation. It came in response to a petition signed by three bold citizens of Fall River. They pointed out that children of tender age were being employed in factories for a number of hours which must be permanently injurious to their health and inconsistent with the education which is essential to their welfare.' "Public opinion a century ago generally approved the Msun-to-sun'1 system of labor. Opposition to the 10-hour movement Was much more formidsble than the opposition presented decades later to the eight-hour movement. As one writer stated: "The stern New - England spirit lad invested industrious habits— the habit of working continuously from morning till night with only time for meals—with the sacred character of a moral, if not a religious, precept.' "But despite obstacles, there were ndependent individuals who persisted in pointing out the evils of child labor. One religious leader sent a letter to a workingmen's convention in 1834, declaring: 'I would ay the most severe restrictions on parents selling their children as slsves to our large manufacturing institutions, and employing boys and girls of the tender age of nine and ten years to work in the noisy and confined and unwholesome atmosphere—from 12 to 14 hours per day.' "Gradually through persistent agitation, one step after another was taken to shorten the hours of labor until, in 1938, the Congress of the United States crowned all these oentury-long efforts with the adoption ef the Fair Labor Standard Act. "This law, abolishing child labor, and fixing a basic 40-hour week with a minimum rate of pay, did not come without many decades of preparation and persistent effort against stubborn obstacles of ignorance and greed."—Labor. The Medical Crisis In more than 300 war production areas the shortage of doctors has 1 reached such proportions that "ordinary day by day hazards of sickness and accident cannot be dealt with," declares the New York Physicians Forum in an open letter to Psul V. McNutt, Chairman of the War Man-| power Commission and other government officials. The Forum is composed of 180 prominent New York physicians. "TW lack of doctors M industrial workers constitutes a very grsve peril to the whole national war effort ," the Forum states. "Let an epidemic start in one of these 'tensely populated sreas and there is no knowing where it will sprcsd or when it may stop." A year ago the President crested the Procurement and Assignment Service to supervise the procurement of medical personnel to meet military and civilian needs. But according to the Physicians Forum, the PAS "has neither procured nor assigned." 4 Its cumbersome procedures snd decentralised set-up proved unable to obtain the doctors needed by the srmed forces. "The Army, in order to get the doctors it needed, had to step in snd do its own recruiting, while war industry ... has been left to fend for itself. Up to the present time, some 35,000 physicians have been obtained for the armed forces by the armed forces," (not by PAS), "while few if sny have been assigned to industrial sress by the Procurement snd Assignment Service." The Army recruiting teams endeavored to get as many doctors as possible .into uniform, regsrdless of dvilisn needs in the communities where the doctors were recruited, A Senate Subcommitteee on Msh Power found that some states, which had too few doctors to begin with, hsve oversupplied the Army beyond the quota originally set for them by the PAS, while others with plenty of doctors have filled less than half their quotas. The lack of sny rations! plan for utilizing medical msn-power is further emphasized by reports that the srmed forces refuse to sccept the services of Negro physicisns. According to Dr. Michael M. Davis, Director of the Committee on Resesrch in Medical Economics, prompt action is needed to correlate military and civilian needs. He sd-vocates that a central agency be established. Unlike the PAS, this sgency, he says, should not be controlled exclusively by medical men but should also include representatives of labor, farmers, industry, etc. Dr. Dsvis believes civilian needs might be met in critical areas by (1) authorizing the U. S. Public Health 8crvice to "commission" doctor« for service to civillsns; (2) cooperation by industrisl management and organised labor to bring needed doetors with substsntisl salaries or guarantees of minimum income for the djuratJon, us at the Kaiser shipyards; (3) encouraging the establishment of doctors in new practices by pacing their moving expenses and perhaps guaranteeing income for a certain period. The N. Y. Physicians Forum also proposes that the U. S. Public Heaun Service commission medical officers for civilian practice in selected areas und send U»ums of doctors to care for the populations of endangered aress. The Forum points out thst "since the problem transcends state lines," it must be handled by a Federal sgency which can cut across such terriers as state liccnsc requirement». Chairman McNutt of the Manpower Commission told the Industrial Hygiene Foundation last week, "Ws eannot continue to permit conditions in some wsr-boom sress where thorc Is only one doctor to 5,000 to 7.000 people." He said that rationing of medicsl service msy be needed. The pace of public demand for action on the home medicsl front is thus accelerating. As Bresd 8c Butter has pointed out, the job is to got the right number of the right doctors in the right places. Want a "Neediest Scandal" In introducing this proposal, Sir William says that prior to the wsr "want in Britain was s needless scandal due to no one taking the trouble to prevent it" Admitting that this wsr is costing a lot of money, he ssys the argument "that the British in the futurs must be permanently poor because they will have spent their fsthers' savings, is defeatism without reason and against reason." In a word, Sir William maintsins that poverty is a "preventable disease," and that it is sacrilege to call it "God's will." The lsbor movement all over the world hss been saying that for a long, long time. The labor movement will also applaud his statement that "the object of a government, in peace or war, should be, not the glory of rulers or rsce, but the happiness of the common man." U. S. and Canada Exchange Notes and Beveridge Offers "Security Program" Which Isn't Even "Pink" Two documents, says Labor, offering blueprints for a better world after the war, were made public lest Tuesday. In Washington, Secretsry of State Cordell Hull, acting for the United States, snd Leighton McCarthy, Canads's Minister to this country, exchanges notes. That's the diplomats' wsy of putting it. As s matter of fact, on behalf of their respective governments they agreed that Canada snd the United States would "co-operate in formulating s program, open to participation by all other countries of like mind, directed st the expansion of production, employment snd the cxchsnge end consumption of goods which sre the materiel foundation of the liberty snd welfsre of all people." Of course, that has to do primarily with the removal of trade barriers of all kinds, and it's s move in direction of Secretary Hull's dresm of s world at peace, with sll nstions free to exchange their products without unreasonsble restrictions. Much-Debated Beveridge Plan The other document attracted much more attention. It was Sir William Beverldge'a report on economic reforma for post-wsr Britain. British Tories have been very nervous over this report They are confident that some malign influence has changed the scholarly Sir Williams and that he is intent on compelling John Bull to embrace Communism. * 1 There is nothing in the report to justify thst kind of hysteria, but, nevertheless, many of the Tories sre prepsring to oppose it in Parliament. As a matter of faCt, all Sir William proposes is a broad extension of the principle of socialt security-old age pensions, unemployment lnsursnce, msternlty benefits, aid for poor children and s heslth system wbich would gusrsntec everyone decent medicsl csre. Three-Way Contributions Employers would contribute from 55 to 80 cents a week for each employe. Workers would add from 80 cents to $1 a week. The government would take csre of approxi-rnatelv one-third of the total cost, or about $1,500.000,000. That looks big. but, as a matter of fact, the government is putting up about $800,000,000 now. The cost to insursd persons would go up from s bout $800.000,000 to $1,800,000,000, and the employers' shsre would be boosted from less than $400,000,000 to about $600,-000,000. Of course, those increases would mske It possible to grsnt more llb- Scrape That Beard WPB hss crscked down on the manufacture of razors and restricted the productio| of blades. No more ssfety razors will be produced except for military and lend-lease needs. Previously their production had been restricted to 70% of the 1940 output. Straight razors will be turned out in smaller quantities until January 1 when output stops for the duration of the war. Factories will make commando knives instead. Both kinds of raaors are available in the stores and will be for s long time, since millions of men sre entering the armed services thus cutting down civllisn demand. Safety razor blades for civilian use have been restricted to about 80% of the record breaking 1941 output. With less civilians using blades, the supply will be sdsquste during 1943. You might try getting more ehsves out of your blsdes. Wet your beard thoroughly and wash with soap and water. Follow this with two or three minutes of vigorous lathering. Then shave diagonally across the face so as to give a partly slicing stroke. Try honing double-edged blades against the inside of a smooth tumbler. Wet the tumbler, press ths blade against the glass, and move it back and forth. This will sdd sp-preciably to the life of most blsdus. Some stores sell speclsl curved glssses thst mske ths operation easier. If you do nothing elss, try to sdd one more shave to the number you get out of each blade. Most men hsve gotten into the habit of discarding a blade after s certain number of shsves without seeing whether they can get more out of it.
