Zdaj pa občuti neko toploto pri srcu, kadar pride mimo. It shows 38 percent of our farms have electric refrigerators, 12% electric ranges, 43% washing machines, 27% electric water systems, 10% electric water heaters, 7% electric sewing machines, 25% vacuum cleaners. West Coast farmers have the largest proportion, southern farms the lowest. The survey also shows which appliances are most popular in each region. AN interesting resume of legis-** lative activities of the current session from January 6 to May 31, 1948 shows, among other items, that 983 measures have been introduced in the Senate, 2,344 in the House. Senate Committees have reported 280 Senate and 300 House bills, 25 Senate and 16 House Joint Resolutions, 9 Senate and 17 House Concurrent Resolu- tions, and 44 simple resolutions, while House Committees have reported 183 Senate and 609 House bills, 3 Senate and 36 House Joint Resolutions, 4 Senate and 12 House Concurrent Resolutions and 80 simple resolutions. T'HE House is now well along with its appropriation measures and the drive is on to complete action on these and other “must” bills in the hope of adjourning June 19, prior to the party conventions. The Senate is also moving along rapidly. A FTER many months of study, ** the recent report of a Ways and Means Sub-committee on the Social Security program has resulted in the approval of a bill by the full committee which would extend coverage to some 8,600,000 additional workers. Included are employees of state and local governments, participation depending upon the approval Qf those governments. Coverage would also be available under this bill to certain employees of TVA, and those working in agricultural and horticultural organizations, American-owned international air carriers, farm loan and farm credit institutions, processing activities, and other non-profit organizations excluded under the present law. This bill makes no provision for increase in benefits, nor does it require additional taxes for Social Security purposes prior to the automatic increase in 1950. The comprehensive study which has been made will undoubtedly continue to be used as a basis for extending and improving the Social Security program. Barberton H. N. Refugee Scouts Express Thanks To St. Mary’s Cub Scouts A letter received by Jimmy Debevec of 1068 E. 174 St., a pupil of St. Mary’s School, tells how much the refugee soouts in Austria appreciated the packages, filled with goodies, which St. Mary’s Scouts sent them. The letter, which was written in Slovenian, reads: Spittal, May 30, 1948 Dear Jimmy: Thank you and the rest of the Cub Scouts, for the packages which we received a short time We were happy as we divided and ate everything that could be eaten at once. But whatever has to be cooked, we .saved for our camping'trip, which we hope will be soon. We are still going to school ^so on Sundays we go on short outings only and we can just about wait for our camping trip. One. thing worries us, though! We get very little food in the camp, and there isn’t much in the stores and even that you can get only with ration cards. Besides that neither we nor our parents have much money as we have been away from home three years and had to leave everything behind. There isn’t much chance to earn money. In our family of four, only my daddy earns a little money. I am 15 years old. So I cannot earn any money because I have to go to school. Once more I thank you for the package* which certainly helped us a lot. ,Il makes us very happy if anyone in America remebers us and sends us something. LOJZE (LOUIS) STARMAN, D. P. Camp B 9/9, Spittal a. d. Drau, Austria, Europe z' Envy of the World The history of the world, since recorded time began, has been blackened at regular and frequent intervals by terrible famines. Counties« millions haive died miserably from hunger. And those cataclysms were not confined to long past, primitive times. In the last quarter century starvation has stalked through China, Russia, and other nations. Yet, in the United States, we have never had a famine. Some may say short-sightedly that this is because we are blessed with an abundance of resources. But other countries, where the standard of living is abysmally low compared with ours, ha've great resources also.' Some may think it is because we work harder. Yet in the hunger-ridden nations the average man and woman work much longer hours, and perform a great deal more manual labor, than does the average American. The basic reason for our abundance lies elsewhere It has been in a theory of government that encourages every man to do his utmost and reap the rewards that has stimulated voluntary, individual enterprise and that, finally, has given every man the right to compete with any other in his chosen field. We see hpw this system works on every hand. As a simple example, every American can walk into a store and buy all the meat he wants—something that is impossible inmost other countries. Free enterprise is responsible for putting that meat in the butcher’s showcase—for turning steers, hogs and other animals into cuts that are ready for consumption. To meet the needs of the country, a great packing industry has been developed to bridge the gap between the livestock producer and our homes. It performs a 'vital service at a cost which is almost unbelievably small. So it goes, in every field of enterprise. Free people, working in a free economy, have made the American standard of living the envy of the world. RECALLS FIRST DAYS OF HOLY NAME IN LETTER TO SOCIETY (Editor’s Note. — A few months ago a column appeared in the American Home describing the formation of the Holy Name Society of St. Vitus.. This column was compiled by Frank Zupančič, present treasurer, who was more than amply rewarded for his literary efforts in receiving a most interesting and sincere letter from Father Bonaventure Bandi, O..S.B. Father Bandi at present is at the Benedictine Abbey School in Canon City, Colorado. As was mentioned in the column, Father Bandi was one of the original organizers and in fact was secretary and editor in the first year. We therefore reprint the letter, know-'ing that it will be read with great interest.) Dear Frank: Some time ago I read your article in the Ameriška Domovina which related some of the early activities of the St. Vitus Holy Name Society. I enjoyed it thoroughly because i brought back some wonderful mem ories of wholesome activities by which I personally have profited ever sinefc. Those firstf days of the Holy Name Society were trying days because was something really new and far different from the societies in existence at. the time,. But if it hadn't been for the grand cooperation of the other societies on the whole and the steady push from Monsignor Ponikvar, we would not have surmounted the individual obstacles confronting us in the form of finances, memberships, meeting rooms, and personal antagonists. But it was done because those men felt the need of just such an organization. That need has proved itself ov'er and over time and again. The steady growth of the Holy Name Society with the exception of the devastating war years is ample proof that it was blessed by God from its very inception. It has put into practice the papal appeals that Catholic Action be stressed for the salvation of souls; and Catholic Action interpreted by Holy Namers means everything that will foster growth in the parish. I am firmly convinced that my own activities with ray fellow members at St. Vitus has helped me to the altar. It was because I spent so many hours with the “gang” in the basement of the parish house, that I now spend | more hours with boys, who, pray God, ‘ will go back home to their parishes {8:00 P.
