Well Performed Fantje Concert by Stane J. Kuhar Despite a hot and humid evening at the St. Clair Slovenian National Home on Saturday, Sept. 9, the cool breeze and sounds of the Julian Alps were heard by a large audience attending the annual Fantje Na Vasi concert. This year’s show was the 12th concert presented by Fantje Na Vasi. The selection cf songs featured Slovenian and American folksongs. The evening began with the singing of the “Star Spangled Banner.” The first Slovenian song was “Naprej!” Four additional songs were sung. The seventh and eighths were in Latin in honor of the first recognized writer from Slovenia, Jacob Petelin Gallus. The first Latin song was composed in the Cathedral of St. Mark in Venice, Italy. Although Gallus traveled to many places in Europe his heart and soul was with Slovenia. 1 he last two songs from the first set honored the Lojze Slak Ensemble. The second set of songs began with the religious song, “Bog in Slovenci.” A tribute to America’s Old West was presented with two popular tunes: “Oh, Susanna” and “Bill Bailey Won’t You Please Come Home.” The next song, in terms of timing and beat, was this writer’s favorite. It was entitled, “Marko Skače.” You could feel the influence of the Belokranjski (White March Region - lower portion of Slovenia by the Croatian border) in this particular song. The next song contained a partial solo by John Sršen, director of Fantje na Vasi. The last song contained a variety of tunes from Lojze Slak. Fantje na Vasi was accom-paned by the well-known ensemble, Alpine Sextet. Fantje Na Vasi consists of the following: (first tenor) Peter Dragar, John Sršen, and John Žakelj; (second tenor) Mike Dolinar, Tony Hauptman, Klemen Hren, Steve Režonja, and Tom Štepec; (baritone) Miran Dolinar, Mark Jakomin, Paul Lavriša, John Semen, and lom Sršen; and (bass) Mark Celestina Bart Slak, Tom Slak, and John Tominc. A well performed concert by Fantje Na Vasi was enjoyed by all who attended this annual Slovenian cultural program. Slovenski Oktet, Ultimate Singing Group, Performs The world respected and renowned singing group, Slovenski Oktet, will perform in northeast Ohio on September 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Shore Cultural Center, 291 E. 222 St., Euclid, Ohio. Co-sponsoring this important cultural event is the locally established Slovenian singing men’s group, Fantje Na Vasi (meaning Men From The Village), and Columbia Artist Management Inc., based in New York. Slovenski Oktet, meaning Slovenian Mastersingers (to be specific, eight master singers), is a Slovenian men’s singing group organized in 1951. Slovenski Oktet has performed in approximately 2,500 engagements around the world. Besides the United States, they have visited the remaining North America, South America, Europe, Australia, and Asia. Slovenski Oktet normally performs four different singing styles from various eras. The styles range from Elizabethan and Madrigal selections; Baroque and Classical; Romantic; and international folk songs from a multitude of countries. Slovenski Oktet also has included American Spirituals among their selections. Slovenski Oktet made their first American tour during the 1986-87 season. They visited the midwest, northwest, and west coast during a nine-week period. Despite the current turmoil occurring in Yugoslavia, the one area that the government has not yet destroyed is .the love of culture by the Slovenians. This love is most noted in the capital city of Slovenia, Ljubljana. An established opera house, three symphony orchestras, plus other instrumental and vocal ensembles are located in Ljubljana. Music, in particular singing, has developed into a refined and distinct form of art for the Slovenian people. For a Slovenian, singing is the soul of the Slovenian culture as it expresses both religious and secular feelings about themselves in this often troubled area of the world. Question: 1 have heard that vitamin A can prevent cancer. Is this true? Answer: Scientific studies have shown that laboratory animals given diets without enough vitamin A generally are more susceptible to cancer when exposed to cancer-causing chemicals. Increasing their vitamin A intake appears to protect them from developing cancers in most, but not all, cases. Whether a lack of vitamin A in human diets increases our risk for certain types of cancer is unknown, however. Since vitamin A’s protective influence against cancer is not established, increasing vitamin A intake with supplements is not recommended. Instead, the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society recommend eating a well-balanced daily diet that includes foods rich in vitamn A, such as green and yellow vegetables, and fruits. According to the Office of the Auditor, $23.3 million was withheld from citizens in Cuyahoga County (Greater Cleveland) for their 1988 Federal Income Taxes. This does not include social security and other trust funds. Of that $23.3 million $52% will be spent on the miltary, only 8% will go to health care, 2% to education and 2% to housing. The U.S. exports more arms than anyone else, but we are 19th in preventing babies from dying in their first year. The 1989 U.S. Defense Budget is $300 billion. We are told that “national security” requires us to continue to invest heavily in the military. But to be a truly secure nation, we must also invest in its people. Perfect... the dinner... “A Julia Zalar Super”, the music... delightful, and all of this was enjoyed by a group of over 500 friendly persons. As I moved about, greeting and chatting with friends, meeting new ones, 1 witnessed a number of reunions. Some had not seen each other as far back as their old school days. Imagine all of the things they talked about. Expressions often heard that day were, “What a wonderful picnic,” or “What a wonderful get-together,” and many promised to be back again next year. If you are one of those who -missed out this year, plan to make it to next year’s celebration. I was proud of our St. Clair attendance at the picnic, and prouder yet of our August meeting attendance, which in-cidently was on the day after the great picnic. There was no noticeable decrease in attendance. Our guest speaker was Dr. Alvin Rottman, medical director of the St. Clair Health i Center. His topic was “Preventive Medicine” or “Keeping Healthy People Healthy.” By compiling a patient’s historical file, physical examination, the recording of this data, and individual consultation, and recording each following visit’s findings, the doctor can evaluate the patient’s condition and progress. Dr. Rottman made us aware of the fact that although we may be in good health now, we do need the attention and advise of a qualified physician to help us stay healthy. Should you be in need of a qualified physician, I am sure Dr. Rottman will welcome you at the St. Clair Health Center, 6407 St. Clair Ave., in the Slovenian National Home Building. We thank Dr. Rottman for his interesting and informative talk. On August 28 we received the sad news of the death of Pauline Mohorčič who joined our club in April of this year. On the following day, Aug. 29 came the sad news of the death of Jennie Vidmar, at age 91. Jehnie will be most sadly miss- ed by her devoted husband, Mike Vidmar. It was only death that ended their 67 years of devoted married life together. We extend our sympathy to both families, and may both Pauline and Jennie rest in peace. I received a note from Rose Grmsek telling me that she is now residing in the St. Clair Place Apartments, 1380 E. 13th St., Cleveland 44113. 1 am sure that Rose will still attend our meetings and other events. Marge Kaus tells us that Anna Mocilnikar, once a resident of our area, and now living in Warren, Pa., was recently hospitalized and had necessary leg amputation. Although we find ourselves in the soft landing camp, we will resist using that tired phrase. Instead, we will refer to our “gentle touch down” forecast.. The question of when the expansion will begin to slow down is no longer essential, because it has already begun. As mentioned at the outset, the debate currently evolves around whether the economy will be able to avoid a recession - we think it will. Before we present our argument for a soft landing, oops, we mean a gentle touch down, let’s first examine why the expansion stumbled in the first place. The expansion began to show signs of slowing as the year began: consumer demand was lethargic, especially the demand for housing and automobiles, employment growth slowed by 30% from March through June, industrial production declined in three of the last five quarters, corporate profits shrunk, and the index of leading economic indicators fell in three of the past four months. There were plenty of reasons for the sluggishness. First, there was the steady climb in interest rates that began in March of 1988 and continued through March of this year. The climb in interest rates was a by-product of the Fed’s efforts to slow the expansion to a less inflationary pace. We are now observing the results of their restrictive policy. A second, and more recent, factor has been the surge in inflation from March through May. Higher price levels eroded consumer purchasing power, evidence of which was found in a $23 billion decline in expenditures for nondurable goods in that three-month period. Third, has been the appreciation of the dollar which rose as much as 20% (depending on the foreign currency one looks at) from January to late June when it reached its 1989-high. The stronger dollar is beginning to have a detrimental effect on factory orders for exports and on export production. Having presented the causes of the economy’s current lethargy, what will keep it expanding through the hard times ahead? Our gentle touch down forecast is based on three key requirements: -a decline in inflation, continue^ lean inventory levels, and an ‘‘easier ” monetary policy. The first requirement for keeping the expansion in motion is for inflation to soften in the second half of 1989. Price, levels must decline so that real disposable income can expand enough to keep the consumer spending. This requirement is critical given that consumer expenditures comprise roughly 65% of real GNP. Inflation has already showed signs of softening, now that higher food and energy prices have worked their way through th^, economy. Besides the auto industry, where inventory levels are high, business iventories remain at comfortable levels. As long as inventories remain under control, a correction later in the year is unlikely. Such a correction would most likely result in significant production cutbacks and employee layoffs, both of which could lead to a recession. A third requirement for avoiding a recession is an accommodative monetary policy. The Fed has already taken steps to lower interest rates, but they remain cautious because inflation has not been totally subdued. Consequently, the degree to which the Fed eases hinges on the degree to which inflation subsides. If inflation refuses to go away, the Fed will be unable to ease to the proportion necessary to keep the economy afloat. Daniel Pavšek Ameritrust Bank Speedy Recovery Msgr. Louis B. He was born on Feb. 22, 1904 in Yugoslavia and came to the United States in 1919. Tony was the operator of the former Sedmak Moving and Storage Company located in Cleveland from 1928 until he retired in 1974. He moved to Andover, Ohio where he resided for the last 15 years surrounded by a loving family. His name is being placed on the Ellis Island Immigrant Memorial Wall. Tony was married to Frances (nee Kužnik) for 62 years. He was the father of Betty DiNar-do, Marjorie Stacy, Allan A. (dec.), Raymond J., Barbara Bullis and Shirley Meyers. Mati Terezija se nahaja v kalkutski bolnišnici po srčnem infarktu, ki jo je zadela 8. septembra, kardiolog K.K. Sinha pa pravi, da je njeno stanje resno. Zdravniki so ji dali vsa ustrezna zdravila, vendar je Mati Terezija alergična do nekaterih najbolj učinkovitih. Nastala je visoka temperatura, zdravniki so pa ugotovili, da je ena njenih glavnih žil zamašena. Indijski zdravniški ekipi pomagata tudi svetovno znana specialista, kardiolog dr. Vincenzo Bi-lotta iz Rima in dr. George Lombardi iz univerze Cornell v New Yorku, ki je specialist za nalezljive bolezni in skuša ukrepati zoper visoko temperaturo, ki jo ima Mater Terezija. Kolumbijske oblasti priprle dva trgovca z Mamili, za katerih izročitev prosijo ZDA — Danes štirje bombni atentati v mestu Bogota BOGOTA, Kol. — Včeraj so kolumbijske oblasti sporočile, da jim je uspelo aretirati dva člana mreže trgovcev z mamili. Bernardo Pelaez Roldan in Guillermo Bueno Delgado sta dobra znanca ameriških proti-mamilskih organov in sta oba iskana v ZDA, k» so Kolumbijo zaprosile za njih izročitev. Prihodnji hai^ SC b° v Moskvi pričelo zasedanje cen-va ne®a komiteja, ki bo posvečenoobravna-narodnostnemu problemu v ZSSR. »Emigriranje« vzhodnonemških državljanov čez madžarsko mejo v Avstrijo se nadaljuje BUDIMPEŠTA, Mad. — Kljub protestom, ki prihajajo iz Vzhodnega Berlina, madžarske oblasti zatrjujejo, da ne bodo začele ovirati, kaj šele ustaviti emigriranje vzhodnonemških državljanov v Avstrijo. Madžarska je »suspendirala« pogodbo ž Vzhodno Nemčijo, po kateri bi bili Madžari prisiljeni takšne pobege na Zahod ustaviti ter v potne liste tistih Vzhodnih Nemcev, ki so skušali pobegniti na Zahod, to dejstvo zabeležiti. Takšne pogodbe so stvar preteklosti, pravijo Madžari. V zadnjih dneh se je upočasnil val Vzhodnih Nemcev, ki pridejo iz Madžarske v Avstrijo in nato nadaljujejo pot v Zahodno Nemčijo. Ko so Madžari prvič odprli svojo mejo pretekli teden, je več kot 10.000 Vzhodnih Nemcev drvelo čeznjo. V zadnjih dneh pa pride v Avstrijo okrog 100 beguncev na uro. Opazovalci vzhodnoevropskih razmer pa pravijo, da mnogi Vzhodni Nemci še vedno letujejo v Bolgariji in Romuniji in da bo mnogo teh prišlo v Madžarsko in nato v Avstrijo. Kot kaže, Vzhodni Nemci še vedno dobivajo vizume od njih vlade za prihod v Madžarsko. Po zadnjih vesteh, je našlo zatočišče v ZRN do 13.000 Vzhodnih Nemcev. Zahodnonemška vlada sprejema Vzhodne Nemce, ki so večinoma mladi in poklicno kvalificirani delavci. Z redkimi izjemami so prišleki zasuti s ponudbami za zaposlitev. Mnogi med begunci pravijo, da sicer niso imeli osebnih gmotnih težav v Vzhodni Nemčiji, čutili so pa potrebo za svobodo in za boljšo bodočnost za njih otroke. Bushova vlada bo podvojila pošiljke hrane Poljski v 1. 1990 — Pritiski na Busha, naj vendar več stori za novo poljsko vlado WASHINGTON, D.C. — Včeraj je predsednik Bush dejal, da bodo ZDA prihodnje leto podvojile vrednost pošiljk hrane Poljski. Letošnje pošiljke so v vrednosti 50 milijonov dolarjev, tako bodo 1. 1990 povišane na 100 milijonov. Bush je ykrepal pod močnim pritiskom kongresnikov in senatorjev. Fiskalno leto 1990 za ameriško vlado pričenja že s 1. oktobrom letos, tako bodo Poljaki začeli hrano dobivati kmalu. Pošiljke bodo dobrodošle, kajti utegne biti letošnja zima za Poljake upoštevajoč katastrofalnih gospodarskih razmer izredno težka. Zvezni kongres močno podpira povečevanje ameriške pomoči Poljski. Dejstvo je, da razpoloženje do Poljske in njene nove vlade radodarnejše od Bushevega. Tako je demokratski sen. Patrick Leahy, ki načeljuje odboru za agrikulturo, predlagal celo 2.500 milijonov dolarjev pomoči za Poljake. Pošiljke hrane bodo vključevale meso (svinjsko in govejo), koruza, maslo, riž itd. Pretekli torek je zaprisegla nova poljska vlada pod vodstvom T. Mazowieckega. Bushova vlada zelo želi, da bi Mazowiecki uspel, v Beli hiši so pa v skrbeh, da bi ne iz-gledalo, da se ZDA vmešujejo v poljske notranje zadeve. Komunistična partija na Poljskem je dala vedeti, da bo nasprotovala zapiranju nerentabilnih podjetij in množično odpuščanje delavcev. Voditelj Solidarnosti Lech Walesa namerava potovati po Poljski in prositi Poljake, naj odobrijo novi vladi dovolj časa, da izvede nujno potrebne reforme, ki pa ne morejo imeti takojšnjega učinka. Na Poljskem v zadnjih desetletjih je namreč tradicija izgredov, ko pride do povišanja cen hrane in življenjskih potrebščin in tudi, ko hrane primanjkuje. Dne 27. avgusta je bila namreč pomembna prireditev na čast Jakobu Aljažu. O njej piše na zelo zanimiv način Gril. Ur. Spominske prireditve 100. obletnice prihoda Jakoba Aljaža, triglavskega župnika, povezane z odkritjem njegovega spomenika, se je na Dovjem udeležilo več tisoč ljudi. Začela se je z mašo za pokojnega župnika Aljaža, ki jo je na prostem ob župnišču vodit nddškof in metropolit dr. Alojzij Šuštar, nadaljevala s proslavo ob odkritju Aljaževega spomenika, na kateri je govoril dr. Matjaž Kmecl, član predsedstva CK ZKS, končala pa s srečanjem ob dnevu triglavskega harodnega parka v Mojstrani. Organizatorji prireditve, v posebnem prireditvenem odboru so bili člani planinskega društva, turističnega društva, . župnijskega urada in drugi, so se zelo potrudili in skupaj pripravili prireditev, ki lahko služi za zgled, ko gre za slavja, na katerih se srečajo civilni in cerkveni interest!. Lepo urejen grob dovškega župnika, ki počiva v zavetju župnijske cerkve, in lepo zasnovana Aljaževa spominska soba v župnišču, so že od zgodnjega jutra oblegali planinci. Na široko odprta vrata v župnišča pričajo, da tudi danes živijo v njem ljudje Aljaževega kova, odprtih rok in velikega srca. Umito nebo in prijazno sonce sta po svoje dopolnila praznično razpoloženje približno 2500 ljudi, ki so se zbrali k maši na prostoru ob župnišču. »Bog daj dober dan«, so bile pomenjlive besede župnika Franca Urbanije, ko je nadškof Šuštar skupaj z duhovniki pristopil k oltarju. »Današnjo spominsko slovesnost začenjamo z mašo, ki jo je tu dolga leta opravljal župnik Aljaž in iz nje črpal moč za svoje veliko kulturno, planinsko in duhovniško delo«. V nagovoru med mašo je nadškof Šuštar dejal, da je spomenik Aljažu zunanje znamenje naše hvaležnosti in spomina, ki bo opozarjal mimoidoče planince, kaj je storil za slovenski narod in kam mu je kazal pot. Hvaležni smo Bogu za ta lepi del slovenske zemlje, hvaležni pa tudi Jakobu Aljažu za vse, kar je storil na verskem, kulturnem, planinskem in glasbenem področju. Nadškof se je zahvalil tudi vsem tistim, ki so Aljaževo dediščino ohranili živo, domačemu župniku, planinskemu in turističnemu društvu, prireditvenemu odboru. »Ponosni smo lahko na delo, ki so ga opravile izredne osebnosti, ena takšnih je bil tudi župnik Aljaž,« je nadaljeval Šuštar. Aljaž je bil izreden človek v svoji delavnosti, podjetnosti, pogumu, vztrajnosti, v ljubezni do slovenskega naroda in njegove kulture. Moč za vse to je črpal iz svoje vere v božjo navzočnost. »Zato je hotel povsod, kjerkoli je ljudem * odkrival lepote stvarstva in jih vabil v višine, dati tudi Bogu prostor. Njegova želja je bila, da bi bila zraven planinskih domov tudi kapela, da bi imel tudi Bog svoj domovinski pro- SAN FRANCISCO, Kalif. - V petek, 18. avgusta, je bila v Stocktonu v cerkvi Sv. Luka pogrebna maša za pok. našega prijatelja, 88-letnega slovenskega duhovnika msgr. Leona Kristanca. Pridigal je tamošnji župnik Konrad Gruber. Maševal je stocktonski škof Donald Montrose in z njim še tudi 16 duhovnikov, med njimi msgr. dr. Martin Starc, msgr. Alojzij Žitko, župnika Mirko Kozina iz Oaklanda in John Mihovilo-vich iz San Francisca. Prišel je tudi naš organist Aleš Šimenc, sorodnik pok. Kristanca. Mnogo prijateljev se je udeležilo sv. maše in nato pogreba na pokopališču San Joaquin v Stocktonu. Na dan pred cerkvenim godu papeža Leona Velikega seje 12. aprila 1901 Kristanče-vim v šenčurski fari pri Kranju na Gorenjskem rodil zdrav fantek, ki ga je tamkajšnji kaplan Frančišek Traven krstil za Leona. Ob istem krstnem kamnu je v decembru 1. 1899. bil krščen Leonov rojak Jože Jagodic, njegov bodoči najboljši prijatelj, poznejši tajnik in kancler škofijskega ordinariata v Ljubljani in nato od papeža Pija XII. imenovan kot delegat za oskrbovanje jugoslovanskih beguncev po svetu. Po dovršitvi osnovne šole in gimnazije se je Leon vpisal v ljubljansko bogoslovje. Ob koncu prvega letnika (1922) ga je njegov prijatelj in rojak Jože Jagodic naprosil za »druga« ob novomašniškem slavju v začetku julija v domači fari Šenčur. Tisto leto je ljubljanski škof Jeglič posvetil v duhovnike 47 diakonov z Gorenjskega, Dolenjskega in Notranjskega, med njimi tudi dr. Josipa Turka, ki je študiral v Rimu (brat prvega slovenskega župnika naše fare Rojstva Gospodovega v San Franciscu). Ko so novomašniki odhajali iz Ljubljane na svoje domove, se je novomašnik Jagodic pripeljal z vlakom do Kranja, kjer ga je s kočijo in parom konj slovesno čakal na kolodvoru presrečni Leon; z njim je bil njegov brat Franc kot »kočijaž«. Ob prihodu v domačo vas jih je čakala družba mladih fantov na pestro okrašenih kolesih. Trg pred farno cerkvijo v Šenčurju je bil okrašen z mlaji, zastavami in venci. Za tako priliko dekleta preču-jejo več noči, saj hočejo naplesti po več sto metrov svežih vencev; vmes pa veselo prepevajo. Množica ljudi z duhovniki je veselo sprejela novoma-šnika med slovesnim pritrkavanjem zvonov. Leon je zvesto in s ponosom spremljal slavljenca, saj so mu ob tem uhajale misli na njegovo lastno bodoče novomašniško slavje. Po veselem sprejemu se je pa naslednji dan že začel za novomašnika in Leona ter voznika Franceta zelo naporen teden osebno povabiti sorodnike, nekatere znance in bližnje duhovnike na novomašno slavje. S »koleseljnom« (avtomobili so bili takrat zelo redki) so prevozili v vročini in prahu skoraj vso Gorenjsko. Na dan nove maše je Leon imel rediteljsko skrb ob pogostitvi nad sto svatov na prostem, kjer je oče pripravil mize in klopi. »Neposlušni« gostje so spravili mladega bogoslovca Leona do solz, ker so rajši stali ob novomašniku, namesto da bi pravočasno posedli. S posebno marljivostjo je Leon nadaljeval svoj študij na ljubljanski teološki fakulteti, ki je bila vedno dobro zasedena ter zaradi izvrstnih profesorjev zelo čislana in upoštevana. Podeljevala je tudi akademske stopnje. Od njene u-stanovitve 1. 1919 do 1. 1945 je nil njej promoviralo 34 bogoslovcev in duhovnikov iz raznih škofij in redovnih družb za doktorje bogoslovja. (Gl. Jagodic, Mojega življenja tek.) Trije izmed profesorjev te fakultete so bili imenovani za škofe: profesor za zgodovino staroslovenskega slovstva dr. Josip Srebrnič je bil imenovan za škofa na otoku Krk (1929); profesor moralne teologije dr. Josip Ujčič za beograjskega nadškofa (1936); o cerkvenem štor, kamor se zbirajo ljudje v prijateljstvu in hvaležnosti.« Izredni ljudje so za nas velika obveznost, je nadaljeval nadškof, Ohraniti moramo njihovo dediščino nepokvarjeno in jo izročiti kasnejšim rodovom. Ob spominu na Aljaža stojimo pred trojno nalogo: 1. Ohraniti stvarstvo pred zastrupljenjem in uničenjem. 2. Ohraniti resnično prijateljstvo in dobroto do vsakega človeka, a to najprej v iskreni ljubezni do slovenskega naroda. 3. Ne pozabiti, da je tisti, ki nam vse daje, Bog, naš stvarnik. »Aljažev spomenik ob cesti nas bo spominjal, da smo na poti v višave, k luči, k širšim obzorjem, da vidimo v daljave, da vidimo tudi svoj zadnji cilj. Zato je danes dan hvaležnosti, veselja in obveznosti,« je svoj nagovor končal nadškof Šuštar. Proslava, povezana z odkritjem spomenika Jakobu Aljažu, se je odvijala na prostoru ob spomeniku, ob magistralni cesti Jesenice —Rateče, nad križiščem s cesto proti Mojstrani. Trimetrski kip, ulit iz brona, predstavlja Aljaža z dvignjeno desnico in pogledom, uprtim v dolino Vrat in proti vrhu Triglava. Več kot 4000 ljudi seje po maši zbralo okoli spomenika in prireditvenega prostora. Med Častnimi gosti so bili nadškof Šuštar, domači župnik Urbanija, dekan radovljiške dekanije Martin Erklavec in še nekateri drugi duhov- (dalje na str. 7) -J Msgr. Leon Kristanc: iz bogoslovskih let pravu je predaval bivši profesor celovškega bogoslovja dr. Gregorij Rožman, imenovan za ljubljanskega škofa v letu 1929. Za častnega doktorja te fakultete je bil pozneje imenovan ljubljanski nadškof Anton Vovk. Leto 1918/19 je bilo v I. letniku kar 53 bogoslovcev, v poznejših letih pa nekaj manj. Dobro znani in spoštovani so bili fakultetni profesorji: vodja semenišča in profesor mora-like, strogi Ignacij Nadrah; blagi dr. Josip Demšar je predaval o vzgojnih načelih in ka-tehetiki; dr. Aleš Ušeničnik psihologijo in sociologijo; sloveči stolni pridigar dr. Mihael (dalje na str. 7) Denarna nabirka zeio lepo uspela EASTLAKE, O. - V nedeljo, 10. septembra, je bila tudi na slovenski oddaji, ki jo vodi Tony Petkovšek ob sodelovanju Joeyja Tomsicka in Dušana Maršiča denarna nabirka za podporo te radijske postaje, ki je obnovila »narodnostne« oddaje letos meseca julija. Zaradi odsotnosti Joeyja Tomsicka, je njegovo mesto zasedel John Pestotnik, predsednik Slovenskega radijskega kluba. Med slovensko uro je poslalo lepo število poslušalcev svoje prispevke, tako da je bila nabirka za to uro $2.240. Skupno so vse narodnostne oddaje nabrale okrog 10 tisoč dolarjev. Najlepše se zahvaljujemo vsem darovalcem in upamo, da bodo pridobili še svoje znance in prijatelje, da bodo vestno poslušali vsako nedeljo med 12. in 1. uro pop. to od-* dajo. Ob tej priliki vas opozarjamo na koncert Slovenskega okteta, ki bo v velikem avditoriju v Euclid Civic Center na 291 E. 222 St. ob 7.30 zvečer in. sicer v soboto, 23. septembra. Leonu Kristancu (nadaljevanje s str. 6) Opeka je predaval o cerkveni retoriki; profesor Franc Gri-vee in dr. Andrej Snoj sta razlagala sv. pismo nove zaveze; dr. Matija Slavič staro zavezo, grški tekst in hebrejščino; dr. Gregorij Žerjav je bil strokovnjak v sirščini in arabščini; dr. Lambert Erlich v veroslovju; talentirani filozof, specialist v cerkveni diplomatiki (v vedi za branje in tolmačenje starih li-stin), dr. Josip Turk je razlagal cerkveno zgodovino (1. 1930 je izšla v Grobljah njego-Va knjiga »Cerkvena zgodovina); podrobno je proučeval zadetek samostanov v Sloveniji; dr. Gregorij Rožman je predaval cerkveno pravo; mestni zdravnik dr. Anton Brecelj je Predaval o zdravju in družinskem življenju; priljubljeni Stanko Premrl je bil potreben Za cerkveno glasbo. Kristančev Pfijatelj Jože Jagodic je postal doktor bogoslovja, škofijski tajnik in kancler. V tajništvu 11111 je v Ljubljani nekaj let polagal naš sedanji msgr. Lojze Žitko (zdaj v pokoju v Oaklandu). (Zanimalo me je šolanje g. distanca, saj je pel novo ^ašo istega leta (1925) kot sem Jf!z z zrelostno maturo končala jabljansko državno učitelji-Sce- Poznala sem pa tudi več njegovih profesorjev, ki so ho-‘ ‘ Predavat na sestanke naše ‘ ženske dijaške zveze.) ®°gu vdan je bil rod tistih rrtiadih duhovnikov, sovrstnikov g. Kristanca, in starejših duhovnikov še iz Jegličeve Šole. Mnogi od njih so veliko Pretrpeli kot dušni pastirji, Prejeli tudi krono mučeništva. G- Kristanc je služboval kot kaplan v Višnji gori in v Ribni-p'- L. 1939 je postal župnik v režganju. Med Hitlerjevo °kupacijo je bil pregnan iz !>nemškega« dela Slovenije in Prišel v tim. »Ljubljansko °krajino«. Šel je pomagat haremu župniku Krumpetru r' Sv. Gregoriju na Dolenj- skem. sk^° Z*°mu dalije L 1943 je p uPaj z drugimi bežal pred anizanskem zasledovanju ter Za časa turjaških dogodkov ljer,Va* na Igu. Od g~ at je pri mašnem povzdi-anju ni mogel več dvigniti, eta 1945 je s tisoči drugih beguncev prišel na Koroško v Britansko cono ter tam pomagal v taboriščih v dušnem pastirstvu in odrskih prireditvah. Šel je še dalje — v Ameriško cono na Tirolskem, kjer je deloval v dušnem pastirstvu v bolnici in tudi pomagal slovenskim beguncem ob vstopu v svobodno Ameriško cono ter dalje čez Atlantik. Jože Jagodic (znan po imenu »kancler« Jagodic) je takrat tudi že bil na Tirolskem, v Tristachu. V februarju 1946 je prejel iz Vatikana dekret: papež Pij XII. ga je imenoval za Narodnega delegata za versko in moralno pomoč beguncem. V tej odgovorni novi službi mu je Leon Kristanc preskrbel dobrega, zanesljivega slovenskega šoferja, ki je vozil svoj avto (Franc Škvarča), kar je omogočilo g. delegatu obiskavati nešteta taborišča preko Evrope; za tajnika mu je svetoval prof. dr. Martina Starca, ki je po izselitvi v Ameriko bil sprejet za kaplana v Oaklandu, premeščen v Stockton in nato v župnijo Sv. Andreja. Poleg skrbi in odgovornosti kot župnik, je na priporočilo stock-tonskega škofa, prijatelja Slovencev (Merlin Guilfoyle) bil tudi počaščen: dobil je naslov monsignor. Da se vrnem nazaj v begunska leta: V svojem novem poslanstvu in razdelitvi prostranega ozemlja v teritorije, je delegat Jagodic določil Kristanca za dekana Vzhodne . Tirolske, Koroške in Štajerske v Ameriški coni. Ko so se 1. 1949 begunci morali izseliti iz taborišč, je odšel tudi g. Kristanc in bil sprejet v Kalifornijo. V juniju 1950 so se v Lemontu zbrali srebrno-mašniki: čč. gg. Franc Jeraša, Leon Kristanc, frančiškan msgr. Aleksander Urankar, misijonar Jože Godina in »škofov kaplan« Julij Slap-šak. Ob istem času so se za svoje slavje zbrali tudi novo-mašniki: trije begunski bogoslovci z ljubljanske fakultete — p. Inocenc Ferjan, p. Basilij Valentin in p. Alfonz Ferenc; ter trije ameriški slovenski bogoslovci, namreč gg. Edvard Pevec, Frank Malavašič in p. Thomas Skubitz. Mnogo, mnogo so si imeli povedati. G. Kristanc je rad obujal spomine na to srečanje, ko je kot kaplan deloval v raznih župnijah, bil imenovan za župnika in tudi prejel čast monsi-gnorja. Zadnje njegovo bivali- šče je bilo v Stocktonu. Ko je stopil v pokoj (nekoliko tudi že poprej) si je kratil čas z izrezovanjem lesenih kipičkov. Zaslovel je po izdelavi krasnih jaslic. Vedno je rad čital in pisal. Zadnjih deset let pa so mu oči naglo pešale. Ni mogel več čitati. Sameval je v domu onemoglih v Stocktonu. Maks Simončič (dolga leta dopisnik v AD) ga je pridno obiskoval, dokler tudi sam ni opešal. Msgr. dr. Martin Starc mu je prinašal duhovno tolažbo. Drugi slovenski prijatelji so tudi že onemogli ali pomrli, mlajši pa imajo svoje skrbi. Ob njegovem pogrebu ni bilo slovenskega petja, slovenskega »Zbogom!« Naj bo dragemu sorojaku duhovniku s prelepe slovenske Gorenjske ta-le dopis tu ob obali Tihega oceana v prisrčno zahvalo za mnoge žrtve, ki jih je prestal v dobrobit Slovencem in v čast božjemu Odrešeniku. Naj ga Bog sprejme v kraj večnega veselja. Angela Gospodaric Nekoč plavo Jadransko morje Alge, ki so se letos v začetku turistične sezone množično pojavile na italijanski strani Jadranskega morja, tudi dalmatinski strani niso prizanesle. Povzročile so mnogo skrbi turističnim ustanovam in nejevolje pri letoviščarjih, so pa lahko tudi »blagoslov«. Vsaj tako meni italijanski nadškof Ersi-lio Tonini. Ta sodobna nadloga bo postala blagoslov v primeru, če se bomo ljudje začeli bolj spoštljivo obnašati do okolja in spoštovati njegove naravne zakonitosti. Jadransko morje mora biti vsem ljudem, ki letujejo ali živijo ob njem, vir zdravja, o-krepitve in počitka, ne pa, kot se dogaja, za nekatere vir bogatenja, za druge ugodje in poceni zabava. To morje spada k evropskim zakladom. Veliko škode je že narejeno, saj so ga politiki in znanstveniki začeli prepozno reševati. Zaradi mnogih nudističnih plaž je bilo med okoliškim prebivalstvom tudi precej pohuj-ševanja. kemr"0,našni,
