— A- Pogodba o prodaji ameriških žitaric Kitajski dosežena WASHINGTON, D.C. meriški in kitajski pogajalci so dosegli pogodbo o prodaji ameriških žitaric Kitajski za naslednja leta. Poročilo razodeva tudi, kako naš State Department to zadevo prikriva.” Čeprav listina omenja številne primere omejevanja človekovih pravic drugod, pa komisija povsem prezre take kršitve v Jugoslaviji. Med informativnim sestankom s časnikarji v State Departmentu ob petletnici helsinškega dogovora sta bili zastopniku našega zunanjega ministrstva postavljeni dve vprašanji. Vsega torej 507. Enega poznejših obsojencev, belgijskega državljana!, so agenti jugoslovanske politične policije ugrabili v Romuniji, drugega v Švici, tretjega z vlaka na poti z Zahodne Nemčije v Italijo. Cevca ogledali škofijski dvorec, stolnico in bogoslovno knjižnico. Škof Lenič in prof. Nisem mogel verjeti. Strmel sem in vzdihoval: “Usmiljenje, Gospod, usmiljenje! U- ____________________________________________________ boga mati! DAVE HROVAT, CHAMPION DIVER Diver Dave Hrovat of Men-tor-on-the-Lake placed in three events in the 14th annual National AAU Junior Olympic Games at the University of Santa Clara of California Aug. 9-16. It was another success for the very successful 14-year-old. Hrovat, 5 feet tall and 100 pounds — starting diving when he was 7 years old. “I started watching my older brother, Steve, dive and I got interested in it,” Dave said. Hrovat dives for the University Diving Club in Hunting Valley. In 1979, Hrovat finished ninth in the 14-year-old and under age group on the IOmeter platform at the Nationals at Woodlands, Tex. That same year he took the Ohio State three-meter springboard championship. In Santa Clara, Cal., at the AAU Junior Olympic Games he finished a very impressive third on the 10-meter platform, ninth in the 1-meter springboard and 15th in the 3-meter springboard. To qualify for this meet Hrovat won both spripgboard events at the Region 2 AAU Age Group Junior Olympics at Brandermill Country Club at Richmond, Va., July 16-18. Hrovat said his third place finish at Santa Clara in the 10-meter platform was his biggest thrill of his career. “I was really pleased with my performance. That’s the highest finish for me in any national,” he said. The road to success hasn’t been easy. There’s a lot of hard work that goes into it. “Right now, I’ve been off for six weeks, but I’m still working out for next year,” Hrovat said. He started his regu- lar five-days-a-week, double sessions at the end of September. “I usually dive from 7 to 9:30 a.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Dave says to keep in shape he runs a mile daily and lifts weights to strengthen the legs and upper chest. “My coach, Jeff Arnold, wanted me to work out with the weights,” he said. Arnold also has his divers work out on a trampoline. One of Dave’s biggest fans is his mother, Beverly Hrovat. “We all try to go to the meets,” she said. These meets are quite expensive for the family because. the Hrovats must pick up the tabs. “The traveling is expensive. I have no idea how much it has cost us, and ^’d hate to put a price tag on it,” she said. Dave attends Mentor Shore Junior High and Mentor High the following year. After high school, he would like to attend college. “I would like to go to Ohio State Univer-' sity because it has one of the best diving teams around,” he said. “I’m trying for a scholarship.” Dave’s diving dreams don’t end after college either. “I want to go to the Olympics,” he said. But, for now, his visions of Olympic gold medals will have to wait. “I’m pleased with my diving career so far. Sometimes you get tired of all the training, but the meets are a lot of fun,”' he said. The young Slovenian is the son of Ronald Hrovat of Mentor who played the saxophone in the Novak band. He is the grandson of Joseph and Jennie Hrovat of Larchmont Ave., Cleveland and grandnephew of Marie Powell of Euclid. -------------o—----- New Subscribers Katherine Loknar, Joliet, 111. — Daily Antonette Koshinz, Scottsdale, Arizona — Friday Angela Gradišek, Herminie, Pa. — Friday Happy Reading! Terri Lavrisha, Secretary -— --o------— Memo: From Madeline SUCCESSFUL CONCERT By JIM DEBEVEC Culture in the Greater Cleveland area took 90 paces forward with the performance of the Slovenian Philharmonic of Ljubljana, Yugoslavia Thursday, Oct. 23 at Severance Hall, home of the Cleveland Orchestra. Over 1800 persons attended the prestigious event, which was the first concert here for the orchestra. Proceeds for the night go to the Slovene Home for the Aged on Neff Road. The 8:00 concert began with about half the orchestra playing. “Water Music” by George Frederick Handel. Kostadin Kirkov, solo violin, did well in a dialogue between violin and the rest of the strings in “Inventiones ferales by Uroš Krek. This somber funeral music is somewhat of a modern piece of music; listening to it is similar to viewing a modem work of art. “Concerts for Two Trumpets” by Antonio Vivaldi featured two trumpets on either side of the conductor playing harmony. This was enjoyed immensely by the splendidly dressed audience. The youthful (36) Uroš Lajovic expertly led the full compliment of 90 musicians in the performance of Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8 in G minor, Op. 88. The orchestra members were under complete control of the conductor and seemed to be w'ell disciplined under his firm command. After the concert, everyone was invited to Milan Kapel’s Charterhouse in Euclid for a social with members of the orchestra. A gathering of 300 was expected but close to a thousand crowded together in the spacious pool-lounge area of the motel in Euclid. The beautiful and exquisite setting wTas perfect for the reception which lasted until the wee hours \of this morning. Among the dignitaries present at the concert were Cleveland Mayor George Voino-vich, Judge August Pryatel, Euclid Mayor Anthony Giun-ta, Monsignor Louis B. Baznik, and Father Frank Kosem of the Chancery. To name all the magnificant dignitaries present would require printing 1800 names. Such cull urai events should be staged more often. That the U.S. Department of Education and ail state and local school boards and private and religious school administrations introduce holocaust studies in all : school systems, that such studies emphasize all victims of the Nazi holocaust and that all said studies examine root causes of the genesis of the Nazi rise to power. 4. In order to promote Slavic American activities and to inform the general public of our programs, achievements, and concerns, the following resolution is presented: To establish a national committee on publicity to advance the cause of the Slavic Americans and that groups submit all affairs pertinent to our group to the major newspapers and other forms of the media and to the fraternal and religious publications of this nation. 5. That we support the people of Poland, and especially the workers in their struggle to achieve a measure of human rights. Our president returned. We had a splendid meeting with nearly 50 persons. A great deal was accomplished. We are busy making plans for our Show and Dinner Dance in February. We shall refer to this dance for several coming months to remind all winter visitors to try and make plans to come here in Feb. We want it to be a great success. Hermine Race will handle the show as I have mentioned before. During an extensive tour a few years back she acquired 33 native outfits of different countries she visited. They are beautiful and will be modeled by members. The big event will take place at the country club in Pompano Beach, Fla. Crystal Lake to be exact. Do plan on this all you travelers from Chicago, Cleveland, New York, and Penna. This invitation is also extended to Slovenians in Samsula as well as on the West Coast.
