St. Gregory the Great Slovenian Church 16/47 Številka - Number / Leto - Year 17.4.2011 CVETNA NEDELJA PALM SUNDAY OF THE LORD'S PASSION Fr. Kljub zaostre nosti dogodkov je zelo umirjeno in trezno. Pisatelj ni hotel biti časnikar, ki mu gre za poceni učinke. Vedel je, da je resnica najbolj prepričljiva takrat, kadar priča sama zase. Pred nami se vrstijo predstavniki raznih poklicev in stanov: mogočniki, sodniki, duhovniki, voditelji strank, bogataši, izobraženci, dvorjani, meščani, vojaki, ljudstvo, hlapci, dekle, moški, posamezniki in množica. Opisani dogodki so že davno minili, vendar pa se vrstijo pred nami še danes. Vsi smo zajeti v pripoved o Jezusovem trpljenju. Kaj, ko bi v njej našli sebe in ocenili lastno vlogo? Jezus je hotel, da je njegovo življenje doseglo vrhunec v trpljenju in njegovo trpljenje vrhunec na križu. Zakaj? Temu vprašanju ne bomo prišli nikoli do dna. Naprej smo uredili razsvetljavo, nato nove slike in prenovili okvirje, tapecirali klopi, sedaj smo dodali še oblogo, kjer so sedeži. Mizarska dela sta opravila Kolman Mes in njegov sin Thomas. Pobarvala sta Mirko Kolmanič in Mirko Zorko. Delo in material so mojstri darovali za cerkev. Iskrena hvala vsem. Cerkev je lepo urejena in v načrtih imajo dograditi dvigalo za invalide in starejše. s Sunday's Readings PASSION (PALM) SUNDAY Gospelfor the Procession Matthew 21:1-11 Jesus enters Jerusalem, acclaimed as the Son of David, but within a few days the crowd will be shouting for his death. First Reading Isaiah 50:4-7 Jesus is the Suffering Servant, beloved of God and despised by those who do not see him as their promised salvation. Second Reading Philippians 2:6-11 Jesus' greatness was in his humility and self-emptying. Even though he was God, he became fully human in order to show us the way to his Father. Gospel Matthew 26:14 - 27:66 Jesus shows himself to be a very different king from the one that the crowd had anticipated. "Now there was at that time a notorious prisoner whose name was Barabbas. So when the crowd gathered, Pilate said to them, 'Which do you want me to release for you: Barabbas or Jesus who is called Christ?'" Illustration Imagine the scene: a woman is shopping in a marketplace. "I'll give you a good price!" With these words, the trader offers an item that is hopelessly overpriced... and he knows it. It is only the unsuspecting, the ignorant and the foolish who will be caught out. He'll start by demanding far more than the item is worth. The customer will retaliate by undercutting the item's cost, again to a ridiculous degree. It's worth far more. The trader pretends to be shocked and complains that his wife and children would starve if he were to accept the offer. The discussion swings backwards and forwards, with the trader progressively lowering his price and the customer raising hers. At a certain stage, one or other will demand, "What is your best price?" The response, "That is my best price!" leads to more discussion, but the end is close. A deal is struck. Both complain loud and long that they have been cheated, while both privately rejoice in having won the contest. Gospel Teaching Pilate knew the crowd was accustomed to haggling over the cost of goods and services. It is a system that Jesus and the apostles would have used on a daily basis. The difference was that, in this case, Pilate was prepared to trade human lives. In exchange for Jesus he offered a notorious criminal, Barabbas. Pilate was a skilled operator, a successful politician. He knew how to make a trade-off. He knew the reputation of this man Barabbas, so he didn't expect the crowd to choose him. He was fully aware that the chief priests and elders had acted out of sheer jealousy in bringing Jesus before him, but he thought that he could keep the people relatively happy and at the same time stay out of trouble with Caesar. He was, in effect, saying, "I'll give you a good price!" When Pilate displayed Jesus, he showed the crowd someone that even he thought would gen- erate a feeling of pity. Yet the mob was still dissatisfied. Stirred up by the chief priests, they were not only prepared to accept that Barabbas should be freed instead of Jesus. Further negotiation was necessary. They made their demands: "Let him be crucified!" Pilate tried the tradesman's trick. He couldn't claim poverty, but he still made one last appeal to their better nature: "Why? What harm has he done?" The crowd was unmoved. This was the moment when, as in any bargaining process, the potential buyer declares, "That is my best offer. Take it or leave it!" At this point Pilate washed his hands of the whole business. Both sides could go away thinking they had a reasonable deal. The high priest would probably regret having Barabbas on his hands, but at least Jesus would be out of the way; so Caiaphas thought he had struck a good bargain and had beaten Pilate. However, Pilate also thought he had had the last word. He set a sign on the cross: "This is Jesus, the King of the Jews." Pilate and Caiaphas in effect struck a deal and, as a result, Jesus was tortured, degraded and crucified. They also dehumanised Barabbas, of whom we hear nothing more. Barabbas was as disposable as Jesus. Their dignity and rights were unimportant except as points in a trading dispute. Application Caiaphas wanted to eliminate Jesus as a problem. Pilate wanted to keep Caiaphas and the Jewish leaders quiet, and to avoid getting mixed up in their interminable religious disputes. At the same time he wanted to keep the people happy, and so to avoid the sort of popular unrest that might have got the governor into trouble if it had come to the attention of Caesar. Between them, Pilate and Caiaphas treated both Jesus and Barabbas as disposable commodities. They bargained over human life as if it were something that could be readily traded in exchange for transitory political ends. "God made flowers. People called them weeds." Have I ever failed to recognise the loveliness that God planted inside someone else, perhaps discounting his or her true value in my eagerness to satisfy my own aims? easter triduum_ The Mass of chrism in our Diocese is celebration on Monday of Holy Week at the Cathedral 7:00 p.m. everyone is invited to the celebration. Through his Paschal Mystery, the Lord Jesus redeemed the human race and gave perfect glory to the Father. By dying, Christ destroyed our death; by rising, he restored our life. For this reason, the Easter Triduum, when we celebrate the suffering, death and resurrection of our Lord, is the high point of the liturgical year. The Easter solemnity is to the year what Sunday is to the week. The celebration of the Easter Triduum opens with the evening Mass of the Lord's Supper, reaches its climax in the Easter vigil, and closes with Evening Prayer II on Easter Sunday. GOOD FRIDAY -The Church of God fasts today and tomorrow to honour the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare to share more deeply in the joy of his resurrection. Good Friday is a universal day of fasting and abstinence from meat. The Celebration of the Lord's Passion is normally celebrated around 3 p.m.. HOLY SATURDAY - the people of God remain in recollection at the tomb of the Lord, meditation on his sufferings and death, refraining from celebration the Eucharist until the night. During the solemn vigil service, a night of prayer which looks forward to the celebration of the Lord's resurrection, mourning gives way to the joys of Eastertide, which we will celebrate for the next fifty days. Easter Vigil is to be considered the »mother of all vigils« During this night the people of god keep watch as they await the resurrection of the Lord and celebrate it in the sacraments of initiation.
