Take transakcije so uničile Continental Shares družbo, kjer je bil Ingalls direktor. -o- Maschke in tovariši oproščeni. Pol milijona še vedno manjka v blagajni. Dobili boste poceni in zanesljivo. -o-- Skupna seja Soc. klub št. 21 vabi vse člane klubov št. 49, 23, 28 in fit. Javni shod V petek, ob 8. uri zvečer s( -1 vrši javni shod v mali gledališk i d v o r a n i mestnega avditorija 1J Glavni govornik bo Jos. Darovi demokratov Pred kratkim so imeli demokrati 5. in 29. varde piknik v Puritas Springs. Župan in mestni načelnik: Dr. Dinko Puc, l.r. V Texasu so začela goreti žitna polja, plantaže bombaža v obsežnosti več milj in petrolejski vrelci. Nato je prišel kratek oddih, za časa katerega so Radžisraki sporočili, da dajejo rok štiriindvajsetih ur; ce ''ta preteče, bo ves New York uničen. In Zedinjene države so premagane plačale. V. Was it at the Crusaders or the Modern Knights affair ? Many people said they did and yet the Eastern Stars get together and say that, "though they did have a good time it doesn't make anyone feel better to look on the fun that is past, but to prepare themselves for the fun that is coming." And yet we wonder if our impatient public, who has already spent so many enjoyable-evenings with the Eastern Stars, will wait until the 26 of October. This date, which is something over a week distant, will be the crowning achievement of all the other affairs held by this up and coming organization. The committees are hard at work to make it a success. Admission has been reduced to 15 cents, fhe refreshments, also have been considered and will be sold to fit the purse of the most economically-pressed man present. Njene oči so bile živahne, razumne in malo melanholične. "Nič; same nezanimive stvari." "Katera blaznica?" Kdo more to bolje storiti kot časopis? Odpotujem ob šestih z vlakom v Provins." Napravili , mi boste čast in veselje in kosili z menoj. Tu so Escandra poznali in mu dobro stregli: sestavil je okusen obed in mlada dama mu je delala vso čast. Ko je bil led popolnoma prebit, je začela Germaine govoriti. VI. "S to skromno službo sem zadovoljna. Živim s svojo materjo. Ko sem bila še čisto majhna, sem izgubila očeta. Moja plača in mala pokojnina zadostujeta, da živimo srečno." Jtmmmmmmmrnmma—ML ITALIAN @LINE PRESA! MOŠT! GROZDJE! Jos. Minnie Nachtigal fanned eight and Walked four, and did very good Work in the box, though it is said the Juniors just didn't' have the breaks. In the first frame, Teenie Lokar, catching for the green shirts, scored on a wild pitch after getting a single. Kromar doubled and scored as he beat the ball home after Frank Berlin pulled in Carrish's high fly. The Holy Name scored when A1 Ferlin singled in the v%st and came home on Ku-tftel's double. The Stars were handed a goose egg in the second, while the Juniors tied the score. Mickey Krall singled, but was later caught off the bag by John Nagy, smart Star first haseman. "Chicago" Ivancic singled, and later scored as Baltus got out at first, Gulic to Nagy. Lokar flied to Krall in the third frame and Kromar was tossed out at first when he hounced to Nachtigal. John Nagy, heavy hitting lefthander, doubled and scored as Doug Carrish crashed a three-bagger, froug later scored on a wild Pitch. The Holy Names failed to the third and allowed only one Star to make the route in the first half of the fourth. Nachtigal succeeded in placing himself on third' after singling. Krall was looked upon to score his teammate, but made the final out. "Picky" Kasunic, Holy Name Secondbaseman, shined during the fifth inning in a try to Score with a hard slide for home, but Teenie Lokar retrieved the fumbled ball and succeeded in getting him out. Both teams were handed goose eggs on the score sheet for this frame. Red Gulic again showed his Prowess with the bat, by slamming a long homer in the sixth. ROSA Congratulations to the new president and cabinet of the Essdeezee! This column joins their many well-wishers in extending the newly elected officers wishes for a successful term. May your incumbency be as fruitful as the campaign! In all the hand-shaking and back-slapping attendant the successful completion of the gubernatorial race it is well not to forget the voters who made it as interesting and successful as it was. To them the S. D. Z. owes a vote of thanks; their hard work made the election of these officers possible. Many thanks, folks, we hope you enjoyed it. Permit our fancy to stray, we shall try to imagine the first cabinet meeting called by His Excellency, the new president: Mr. Perat (pounding gavel gavel on the table): "Er-ah, ladies and gentlemen, by the power invested in me as president of the nation of Essdeezee, I now convene the cabinet in its first regular session. As ladies and gentlemen and members of this cabinet, you will conduct." Mr. Lah Jr. (enthusiastically): "Hear! hear!" Mr. Kogoj (jabs Mr. Lah in the ribs and whispers fiercely): "Shut up, you ninny, this isn't a baseball meeting." Mr. Perat (blushes and clears his throat): "As I was saying, you will conduct yourselves as such, working always for the best interest—" Mr. Gornik (springs from his chair in great excitement): "Interest! That reminds me . •. . Mr. President (omniously), 1 wish to report that the treasury is in a deplorable state. As secretary of the treasury I demand an immediate moratorium on all outstanding debts. I want a collection order on all accounts receivable, I want—" Mr. Perat (beginning to look wild-eyed, beats a tatoo on the table): "Please, please! allow me to finish. (Squares his shoulders and continues reading)—working always for the best interest of the great state of Essdeezee. In our work we shall undoubtedly encounter "Picky" Kasunic made a nice double play when he pulled in Gulic's grounder, forced Mah out at second, and threw the ball to first in time to catch Red. Birchie Kromar pulled a similar play as he gathered in a grasscutter by Baltus, forced "Picky" put at second, and passed the ball to Nagy before Baltus could get*there. In the ninth, with two out and Kushlan on base, Birchie Kromar walloped the ball down the third base line for a home run, scoring Kushlan ahead of him. The Holy Name team tried hard to score, but failed as Red Gulic and the infield tightened up, making it hard to get the ball through. Hitting honors went to Kromar, Carrish and Nagy for the Stars, with Kumel and Krall doing the best for the Holy Name Juniors. R. H. E. By YANCY YINCHELL Hello everybody, ye ol' scribe is back again and ready for this week's chat about everything in general and nothing in particular, or as Shakespere's immortal work has it: "Much Ado About Nothing." While waiting for. a street car, this scribbler overheard a rather interesting discussion about advertisement. The advertising man was doing his utmost to impress into his listener's mind that the success of almost any business enterprise is based wholy upon advertising. To illustrate his point of argument he asked his acquaintance as to what a hen does when it lays an egg, or what does a rooster do when he awakes in the morning. This aroused his acquaintance's curi-ousity and he asked what does the hen or tlje rooster have to do with advertising? The advertising man said, that it is simple: the hen cackles when she lays an egg to let the farmer know of her deed, and the rooster crows when he awakens to let his master know that he is up. So you see advertising is an old game. Just then my street car came and my lesson in advertising was concluded. The reason this little dittie came to my mind is caused by the absence of advertising for a recent dance and it's subsequent ill effects. Come on, you publicity committees, get going. First I want to apologize to the Comets for not attending their Masquerade Dance. To tell the truth, I didn't hear the rooster crow. The winners of the costume prizes at the Comet's Masquerade Dance were Frances Polk and Rudolph Ma'cek of the Magic City Juniors from out in them hills of Barberton. Congratulations, Frances and Rudy. Congratulations, Eastern Stars! Your recent feat of defeating the Holy Name Club proved you worthy of the Inter-lodge Class B title. You boys brought home the bacon in a style that only real champs could. You may be assured that the S. D. Z. is proud and happy that one of its lodges won this title. Congratulations Mary Milner, for your fine work in the recent campaign for new members. The oil man celebrated his (?) birthday Oct. 10. When asked what he thought of the weather, "Popeye" said it's great for his dry cleaning business. As a Democrat, Frank Oblak is addressed as Mr. Frank Jo-hanas Oblak. DAY Sodja, Podpadec Twins on Afternoon Program Otto Tekautz and his band will furnish the music for the dancers, attending the monster 5. D. Z. Day celebration at the Slovenian National Home, Nov 6, 1932. The popular local band will hold sway in the evening in the upstairs hall, where the youthful followers of the terpischor-ian art will have their fill, while the equally popular Jackie Zorc, ace accordianist, and his boys will play Slovenian dance music downstairs. This, according to a decision, made by the Central Committee at its meeting last Friday evening. At the same time, the committee made tentative plan? for the afternoon's program. According to the arrangement, the afternoon's entertainment will feature the showing of moving pictures taken at the S. D. Z. Olympics and a presentation of trophies to the winners of the meet and in the recent Essdeezee Elecetion Campaign. Joe Sodja, banjoist, now booked to appear on the RKO circuit, will display his wares at the program, aš will the Podpadec Twins, premier Slovenian dancers, who are booked to show in the same act as Sodja. Their appearance at the S. D. Z. celebration, however, depends upon their leaving for Buffalo where they join the RKO act. Others who are slated to show in the afternoon's presentation are Miss Lebar, tap dancing Comet, and the versatile Modern Knights quartet. Admission for the afternoon's program is 25 cents. A similar charge will be made for the evening dancing. Those purchasing tickets for' the afternoon, may stay for evening's dancing without paying another 25 cents, however. This V That By SOPHIE KLEMEN Comets, No. 54 SDZ Congratulations to the Eastern Stars ball team who won the championship Sunday, by winning two games out of a series of three. Sunday's score was 9 to 2 in favor of the Eastern Stars, the Holy Name team were the losers. Have you purchased your ticket for the dance to be given by the Slovenian Mutual Benefit Association at Slovenian National Home, Sunday, Nov. 6? If not, you better hurry! Admission is pnly 25 cents for the dance, and for another 25 cents you will be able to enjoy an afternoon show, movie pictures of S. D. Z. Olympic Day, S.D.Z. parade etc., and speeches given by various members of the S. D. Z., and it is on this day also that the prizes will be awarded the winners of the Essdeezee campaign which closed not long ago. The Comets hope Fay Debenjak has fully recovered from her recent illness, and will soon be able to attend the meetings again. The Magic City Juniors attended the Comets dance Saturday, Oct. 15, and also stayed until the following Sunday to attend the Eastern Stars baseball game at Gordon Park. The masquerade prizes at the Comets dance were received by the following: Miss Frances Polk, Barberton, Ohio, won the first prize, a table lamp; Rudy Macek,, also ol Barberton, and a member of Magic City Juniors, was awarded the coffee percolator;, as second prize; a wall picture was the third prize and was won by Edward Skully, member of Eastern Stars, and Stanley Koželj, another Eastern Star member, received a set of drinking glasses for the fo.urth prize. We wonder where Joe Muzic was the night of our dance. You surely missed a good time, Joe, and by the way, j your friend was in town for the occasion. Don't forget the Eastern Stars Hallowe'en social Wednesday, Oct. 26, at the Slovenian Home, Holmes Ave. The S. D. Z. supreme board are even going as far as buying a piano for the singing club that will soon be organized by the S. D. Z. fellow members. The Modern Crusaders have something up their sleeves. They claim they are working very dillingently and without a doubt will have something new arid different for their anniversary affair which will take place in January. How about a Victory Dance, Eastern Star's? Now that the cup is in the bag, after winning the last game, the boys need a special celebration. Did you folks, by any chance, notice the green candy suckers the Eastern Stars were eating at the game last Sunday ? They were right there with the colors and spirit! ———o--— Godic Runs Gas Station If you would like to know what the G's mean, go to the E. 165th St. and St. Clair Ave., across from Novinc field, where Greenie Godic has taken full charge of a gasoline station. "Get Gas At Greenie Godic" is the slogan of the S. D. Z. motorists in Collinwood. Greenie -is the husky left-field for the Eastern Star Class B champions, and, also pitcher in minor games. WINS BET Mr. Frank Marzlikar, an ardent, booster of the Eastern Star baseball team, is wearing a broad smile these days. The cause of it is that he won a very large bet from a supporter of the Holy Names, who bowed to the Stars last Sunday for the Class B championship. The bet was a ton of grapes, which will be canned in the most popular way. The ball players are exceptionally happy because they expect a certain amount. of commission. Mr. Marzlikar is the proprietor of the Marzlikar Shoe Repairing shop, located at St. Clair Ave., a few feet east of Holmes Ave. and is the father of Frank Marzlikar Jr., vice president of the Eastern Stars and manager of its baseball team. (Where are you, Joe, let's hear from- you.) The Blue Moon Orchestra is now an enlarged dance band and is engaged by several dance spots of this city. It is now called Fred Hiekle's Dance Band. There will be an Interlodge bowling and basketball meeting at the St. Clair Bathhouse Monday evening at 8 o'clock. The boys have previously proven themselves good entertainers and should again be capable of showing all who attend their affair Saturday a good time. The music for this occasion, which is being held in the school hall, E. 156th St. and Holmes Ave., will be furnished by the well-known Brancel Rhythm Rioters. The dance begins at 8 o'clock. Saturday night the Community Welfare Club makes its greatest bid for funds with which to carry on its welfare work so indispensable to this community. We say indispensable—yet upon the success of Saturday's affair depends the continuance of the organization's philanthropic work. There are no more funds. Without them, you realize, the noteworthy efforts of this group must come to a halt. Today the demands of the community's needy and distressed upon this organization for support are greater than ever. The Community Welfare Club can not and must not falter in its march against poverty and starvation. Bleak days, cold nights, fireless stoves, empty cupboards, barren floors and broken hearts and bodies have no place in our community, yet the Welfare Club represents the only organized avenue of escape from these dire conditions for countless of our own people. And the Community Welfare Club is without founds! It is our common duty to see that such is not the case when the third annual charity bail comes to a conclusion Sunday morning. Our attendance at the affair—a George Washington Bicentennial celebration—will go a long way toward helping a needy family through the darkness of the coming winter. But perhaps we're creating the wrong impression. Your attendance must not be taken in the light of a charitable deed alone. You're going to have a great time—in fact, one of the best times you've ever had. Annually the charity ball has been one of the outstanding successes of the community's social season. This year the elaborate preparations guarantee an even greater affair. As has been the practice in the past, the charity ball will be a mask affair, though admittance will not be confined to masked parties only. You don't have to mask to attend, but you'll have more fun if you do and you will have an added opportunity of winning one of the numerous prizes being offered for the best costumes and as door prizes. The'ball is being tied in with the . national celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of George Washington and for this reason Colonial costumes vHU be very much in evidence. The bicentennial motif will be further expressed in the prize minuet dance contest. The music? That will be under the capable direction of Dr. William J. Lausche, who will lead an 11-piece band through the fast fox trots and dreaming waltzes. Nuff said? The grand march at 11 o'clock will open up two hours of hilarious fun-rnaking and frolicking. The drawing of door prizes will take place at midnight, followed by a monster confetti carnival, the high spot of a night of unsurpassed entertainment. And, of course, members of the club will serve delicious refreshments throughout the course of the evening, the evening. Admission? Only 75 cents. What more could one want? Seventy-five cents for charity and a large evening for yourself. You can't afford to miss this opportunity! -t-O- 23D DEMOCRATS MEET List of Prizes Given at Benefit Ball With the third annual charity ball just around the corner, all who are planning on attending will no doubt be interested in the complete lis: of cos-:urne and door prizes to be awarded at the frolic. FRANK TRUDEN IS GRANTED LEAVE OF ABSENCE BY SCOUTS STARS BEAT HOLY NAME JRS. TO WIN INTERLODGE CUP Kromar, Carish and Gulic Star at Bat for Champions When the Eastern Stars took a 9 to 2 game from the Holy Name Juniors last Sunday at Gordon Park, they upset the dope bucket and captured the Class B Interlodge title from the heavily favored Juniors. This was the third tilt of the championship series, with each team having one win. Again it was Red Gulic, Eastern Star hurler, who produced the biggest thorn as he struck out 10 opponents and held them scoreless during the last seven frames. He also collected a homer and a single to sparkle at the plate. Fielding gems were provided by Birchy Kromar and Kasunich in the eighth and ninth innings as they started vital double plays to kill off Holy Name rallies. Kromar also starred with the willow as he garnered a homer, a triple and a double. Carrish and Nagy came in for their share of batting the Stars to the title, while Kumel and Krall did best for the victims. Minnie Nachtigal, the losing mounds-man, was touched for a dozen hits, while he fanned eight Starmen. His team committed three errors. The Juniors could tally only twice despite their barrage of nine hits. SERIESOFDANCES OPENS AT MERVAR'S DANCE TO BE GIVEN WEDNESDAY EVENING BY SCOUT MOTHERS Mr. Frank A. Truden, assistant scoutmaster and executive secretary of the Silver Fox Tribe, local Boy Scout group, has been granted an indefinite leave of absence from these duties by the tribe committee and scoutmaster, it was announced at the Boy Scout Civic Night meeting last Friday evening. YOUNG LADIES SODALITY TO STAGE PARTY OCT. 29 A great deal of the future service and help which the Scout Mothers' Auxiliary of Silver Fox Tribe may give depends upon the success of the Hallowe'en card party and dance, which they are holding on Wednesday evening, Oct. 26, at Mervar's Hall. The Rainbow Melody Aces will furnish the music for dancing, and there will be cards for those who prefer that pastime. All proceeds will revert to the mothers' auxiliary, and the first need to be met will be a troop flag. The local scouts have an American flag, but lack an organization standard. This need has been felt many times, especially in public functions, that the local scout leaders appealed to the scout mothers for aid. Admission tickets are now on sale and can be procured from all scout mothers, officers of the scout troop and older scouts. In order to complete final arrangements for the party, the Scout Mothers' Auxiliary will hold an important meeting on Friday, Oct. 21, at 8:30 p. m., at the St. Clair Bathhouse. The third base coach reached out for the runner as he was on his way home and proceeded to send him back. Umpire Schmiedl, like 99 per cent of the average fans would have done, immediately waved Santilli out. Rule books were consulted any they substantiated the umpire's judgment. It was a tired but happy group of athletes that wended their way homeward after the game last Sunday, and glad, too, that it was all over. Congratulations, Yankees! -0- BIRTHDAY PARTY Miss Frances Hegler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Hegler, 765 E. 236th St., was the honored guest at« a party celebrating her 19th birthday last Saturday evening. COLLINTODSOKOLS RESUME GYMNASTICS NEWS OF EUCLID By MADAM X The Rev. A. L. Bombach turned out to be a very surprised pastor on the evening of Sunday, Oct. 9, when he saw throngs pouring into the St. Christine's auditorium. The event was the guild's popularity ball. Everyone present must have thought that Old Man Depression was gone and forgotten! Oftentimes during the day you will notice Mr. Frank Lach Jr., clad in a white uniform, rushing through the streets of Euclid in his Chevrolet coupe. He certainly is following his dad's trade. The popularity queen of St. Christine's Parish—Miss Stephie Stefancic —is a very active young lady in all undertakings, and is a member of various dramatic clubs. .She played the leading role in a drama which was presented on the stage of the Slovenian National Auditorium last Sunday evening. Whenever it comes- to sports, Miss Mary Boyance can't be missed. She is especially thrilled over a good football game and is now making plans to see the Notre Dame-Navy game in the Stadium. Mr. Ludwig Medved is a beginner in the art of dancing, and is not bad at all. He is seen often on the floor of St. Christine's auditorium. Keep it up, Lud, you're doing fine. The Collinwood Sokols again take up their active gymnastic work after two months'' suspension. Classes were resumed last Monday evening under the direction of Mike Urac, but future classes will be under the capable, instruction of Sokol Frank Jereb. The girls' group will also be under the supervision of Mr. Jereb, who will be assisted by Miss Louise Komin. Boys and girls of Collinwood and vicinity are urged to join these classes. Youngsters from 6 years on will be admitted. The schedules for instruction are every Monday and Thursday evening from 6 to 9 o'clock at the Slovenian Workingmen's Home, Waterloo Rd. as Ray Fulton Stars Relief Role Pitcher Displaying the same vindictive spirit and intestinal fortitude that featured their play throughout the elimination series, "Buddy" Bodnar's Haber Auto Wreckers annexed the Class B sandlot baseball championship last Sunday at Gordon Park by edging Tommy Grib-ons' Brazis Bros., 5 to 4. It was the Habers' second victory in the two-out-of-three titular series that the two nines staged for the class tiara. The Habers copped the first, 8 to 2, and Gribbons' charges captured the second fiasco by a 5 to 4 score. More than 8,000 fans, most *>f them congregated to witness the dethronement of the mighty Brazis, who were last year's champions, cheered wildly as the Habers, for seven innings as docile as the proverbial March lambs before Pitcher Slavik's slants, suddenly and without warning leaped into life and pushed across five tallies to win. The belated rally was one of the most spectacular ever enacted here on the city's sandlots. Going into the last half of the eighth inning, the Brazis possessed a 4 to 0 lead. Wesley Sliter, first man up for the Wreckers, drew a base on balls. Three successive singles and a sacrifice followed, knotting the count at 4-all and putting Howie Berndt on third base with the winning marker. That marked the exodus of Slavik, who up until that frame had yielded just two hits. Baffa was nominated for relief duty by Gribbons. Danny Pavlovic, at bat for the Wreckers, caught his first pitch on the barrel of his bat and laced out a long fly to Zupančič that enabled Berndt to score run No. 5. Koren fanned to erd the inning. Ray Fulton, who had replaced Lefty Zak on the mound after the latter had been nicked for five hits and four runs in the first four innings, ihen staved off the Brazis' last feeble bid for victory in their half of the ninth. The Habers' feat was all the more complimentary and glamorous because before the elimination series the outfit wasn't even conceded an outside chance of crashing through to the finals. On the eve of the series, their lineup was strengthened considerably with the acquisition of Tony Koren, slugging first sacker, and Bill Cassidy, fleet-footed fly chaser. With the two additions, the Habers became infused with the desire to win ball games and were transformed from a mediocre nine into a fighting, rip-snorting ball club. After that they were not to be repulsed. Victories over the Shamrocks, Naso Beauty Shoppes (twice), Bartuneks and the Detroit-W-117th Merchants.qualified them for the series with the defending crown bearers, the Brazis Bros. What happened then has already been chronicled in the annals of the city's sandlots. -o- CLUB HOLDS MEETING The Jugoslav (Slovene) Club will hold a special meeting at the home of Miss Mildred Milavec, 1001 E. 71st St., Monday night at 8 o'clock. We are offering our congratulations to the champs—the Eastern Stars!
