Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The Jam will start at 7 p.m. in the Eddie Kenik Room (annex). Sandwiches and refreshments will be available. Admission is $2 at the door. Secured parking will be provided. For your listening and dancing pleasure the Jam Session will feature various popular musicians from the Cleveland area as well as out of town guests. Joseph is currently a student at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where he studies with Gregory Rulkerson. He will be assisted by fellow Oberlin pianist Chien-Lin Lu and St. Mary’s organist, Edward Ferazzoli. Other guest performers include Allison Lint, Caroline Curatolo, and Eric Tan-nenbaum, all of whom study at the Oberlin Conservatory. Joseph will be playing works by Saint-Saens, Brahms, Svendson, Buono, and Britten. A reception will be held in the St. Mary’s auditorium after the concert. Two all-time great selections chosen are Barking Dog Polka and Roses of Love Waltz which will be performed and given permanent recognition. Nine individuals will be placed on the Trustees Honor Roll including Penn-Ohio’s Johnny Krizancic and Pennsylvania’s Bobby Zgonc. Cleveland’s Frank Culkar; three charter trustees - Joey Tomsick, Joe Valencie, Denny Bucar; and the late Joe and Millie Wojtila and Jenny Zaman. Annual Award category winners of the Crystal Trophy will be presented for Button Box individual and group; best vocalist; musician and sidemen; the coveted band; a Recording of the Year, as well as Support-Promotion and Cultural Awards. Special presenters will include some of the well known all-time Lifetime Achievers in this 20th anniversary year for the Polka Foundation. The Meet the Winners Dance is held downtown at the Marriott Hotel, 127 Public Square, Saturday evening, Nov. 24, beginning with Bishop Pevec’s Polka Mass at 6 p.m., and the Dance-Reception to follow with Don Wojtila; the all star Lifetime Achievers special band under Fred Ziwich’s direction; and Joe Grkman’s Grkmania. Pogačar Talks About Slov. Translations The Slovenian-American Heritage Foundation invites all to attend the fifth talk in their 2007 Lecture Series. The Foundation is extremely pleased that Professor Timothy Pogačar, Ph.d. will conduct an interactive discussion on the challenges of translating Slovenian literary works into the English Language. The program, which is free and open to the public, will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 20th at 7 p.m. in the Lower Hall of the Slovenian Society Home, 20713 Recher Avenue in Euclid. Whortleberries, wine cellars, and pigtail pottage. English language renditions of Slovene works of literature, with examples from the collection Slovenski književnik akademiki (2004; English-language edition, 2007). Recommendations on how best to translate select passages will be welcome from those who attend. Knowledge of Slovenian not required. Timothy Pogačar, Ph.D., has been Chair of the Department of German, Russian & East Asian Languages at Bowling Green State University since 1998. Professor Pogačar received his Ph.D. in Slavic Languages & Literatures from the University of Kansas in 1985, a M.A. in Russian Language & Literature from the University of Kansas in 1981, and a B.S. in Russian, Spanish & Linguistics from Georgetown University in 1979. He served as president of the Xi of Ohio Phi Beta Kappa chapter and since 1996 has been the editor of Slovene Studies: Journal of the Society for Slovene Studies. (Photo by TONY GRDINA) Rep. Kenny Yuko Inducted Into M.S. Hall of Fame The National Multiple Sclerosis Society on Thursday, Oct. 25 inducted State Representative Kenny Yuko (D-Richmond Hts. Ohio) into its Hall of Fame in recognition of his efforts to raise awareness about the disease. A multiple sclerosis (M.S.) patient himself, Rep. Yuko was honored by the M.S. community as a powerful advocate and role model in support of its cause. During the 126"' General Assembly, Rep. Yuko successfully championed a bill that designated March as “Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month.” He also introduced a stem cell research bill, which did not pass but was lauded by the M.S. Society as an important and necessary piece of legislation that might one day help scientists find a cure for the disease. In addition to his legislative work for the cause, Rep. Yuko participates in the M.S. walk every year and organized a team of walkers in 2006 to help raise money. “I’ll do anything I possibly can to raise awareness about M.S.,” Rep. Yuko said. “I want folks to understand the importance of investing in stem cell research and other experimental treatments. A lot of people with M.S., all they have is hope. Doctors and scientists need absolute access to technology and equipment so they can eradicate this devastating disease and give M.S. patients something to be hopeful about.” Rep. Fall of 1958. _________________ (Continued from last issue) by BOB LESKOVEC (Conclusion) In the 1960s, while I was still at WCLV, another one of our St. Joe’s Radio Club buddies (and later JCU student) Ted Alexander (K8VPL) was starting out as the Chief Engineer at WELW, and later served in similar capacities at many stations, eventually at WDOK and WRMR, for example, completely rebuilding the 850-AM plant with a new building, 50-k-W transmitter, and antenna system in 1999. Many people who know of Ted as a well-known Cleveland on-air radio and TV voice-over talent (currently heard on TV-19/43) have no idea he is an accomplished broadcast engineer professional as well, and one of the very few people left in the country who is totally adept at troubleshooting complex multi-tower AM radio broadcast antenna systems. He still takes care of the “polka station” WELW-1330 AM for Tony Petkovšek and Ray Somich. Everybody knows his voice as the guy who has done all those Arslanian Brothers carpet cleaning commercials for so many years. Bob Kozar (K8NXF) also got his M.S. in Physics (married Adele Gomik) and moved on to a long career with NASA becoming a Senior Project Director at Plum Brook. In 2003 he was appointed Executive Liaison to NASA’s Glenn Research Center. Now retired from NASA, he is Interim Director of Research Development for the College of Engineering at the University of Toledo. Tony Bacevice (WA8FYW) got a BSEE and then a Master’s in Biomedical Engineering from CWRU, and then worked his way through medical school while a power engineer for CEI. He is now an OB-GYN and currently produces a medical radio show back on WCLV. Joe Marsey had a very successful career working as an engineer for GTE and a succession of telephone companies and retired early. Dave Mazi went into the Navy, later got an MSEE from Cleveland State, worked on many advanced military weapons projects, and retired from Raytheon. Fred Imm also went into the Navy and later had a lifelong career in electronics and nucleonics with the local steel companies. These are only a few examples of the successful and interesting careers that we were able to get into. Out of all this, I realized I could not think of any member that went into “rocket science” simply because of the Sputnik experience, but perhaps in spite of it. Sputnik was just a passing fancy to us. Clearly it was the overall St. Joe’s High School Radio Club environment that gave us a can-do attitude and made us interested in so many things, and taught us anything was possible. I think many of the kids today need something like that as well. In 1997, for the 35th anniversary of WCLV, Bob Conrad graciously sponsored a big reunion “picnic meeting” that I organized for the Society of Broadcast Engineers, and I invited all the old engi- neers who had worked there, including Jim Arcaro, SJ’69. That was when I finally got to actually meet Joe Zelle in person for the first time. Later, we drove to Kane, Pennsylvania to visit WLMI, owned by Chuck Crouse, a radio announcer we had known from WERE. Chuck came over to WCLV to fill in the next two years for Tony Bianchi who had received his army “draft” papers literally just a few days before he was supposed to start work at WCLV. During our drive, I finally learned all about Joe’s most interesting adventures in broadcasting, all the people we knew in common in the Slovenian community, including my mother, Agnes, and all the trouble he had in trying to pursue his college degrees, moving around first in military and later working in different cities. Joe had also attended John Carroll and was apparently there many of the times when I was there, but our paths never crossed. After that we kept in touch mostly by e-mail or ham radio. With the 50th anniversary of Sputnik, I visited Joe this past Labor Day, so we could compare story details about Sputnik. He is doing quite well for being 95-years-old, but unfortunately his vision and hearing are quite poor now. He can’t read your letters, or hear you on the phone, but he would appreciate visitors at his home in Euclid, where he has a live-in foreign-exchange student at Cleveland State University to keep an eye on him. After all these years, none of us can find any remnant of the original Sputnik recordings, and a search of the internet indicates few others in the world can as well. So, we are hoping some old radio club member had the presence of mind to take them home and save them. We are looking for all our old members of the St. Joe’s High Radio Club which lasted from 1951 to 1975, and not just the ones from the Sputnik adventure, and hope to have a big reunion in 2008. Leon Bibb was kind enough to have Ed and me on his WEWS-TV-5 Kaleidoscope program on Sept. 30th to help us get the word out. In spite of all the Cleveland Indians hoopla and tight demands on the news breaking loose on Oct. 4th, Dick Russ at WKYC TV-3 made it a point to include us and Joe Zelle in a special segment about the Anniversary of Sputnik he produced for the 6 and 7 p.m. news that day. Currently, that story is still available on their website, and can be viewed via a link from our website at SJHRC.ORG. The second concert is titled, “Fire and Ice.” CityMusic Cleveland will perform in St. Vitus Church, 6029 Lausche Avenue, Cleveland on Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. the guest conductor will be Julian Kuerti with harp soloist Megan Levin. The series of four concerts is part of a series of events to highlight the Diamond Jubilee of the completion and dedication of St. Vitus Church. Julian Kuerti was appointed assistant conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra by James Levine in February. He has conducted extensively in Europe, North and South America, performing with orchestras as the Toronto Symphony, National Symphony Orchestra Washington, Berliner Symphoniker, and the Budapest Festival Orchestra. For Greater Cleveland audiences, Mr. Kuerti’s grandfather and parents lived in the Hungarian community of Cleveland. His father was the renowned pianist Anton Kuerti. Julian began his conducting studies in 2000 at the University of Toronto when he was accepted as a student at the Pierre Monteux School for Conductors in Maine. In 2001 Mr. Kuerti won the position of Apprentice Conductor with Boris Brott and Canada’s National Academy Orchestra. After a year as assistant conductor with Canada’s foremost training orchestra, Julian moved to Germany to complete his education. He finished his studies in 2005 with Lutz Kohler at the University of the Arts Berlin. There will be no admission charge for the Dec. 12 concert at St. Vitus but free-will offerings will be accepted. For further information contact the parish rectory at (216) 361-1444. —Stane Kuhar Drug-free, inexpensive turkeys can be grown It Can Be Done Here we report on the production of 42 consecutive flocks of turkey hens on an Ontario farm in Canada, which perhaps can be used as evidence to show that such production can indeed be achieved. A total of 469,317 hens were raised on drug-free commercial diets over a period of 3.5 years with little increase in the cost of production. No anticoccidials or antibiotics were used in foods or water over this production period. For coccidio-sis control, a turkey coccidi-osis vaccine was used. All hens were supplied according to availability by local or U.S. hatcheries over the 3.5 year period. They were not beak trimmed but were declawed and were vaccinated against coccidio-sis on day one. All hens were raised to 11 weeks of age and usually shipped in two lots, one day apart. Ontario data available on over three million hens raised for about the same average age (77 days), the liveability was averaged 96.11 percent over these 3.5 years with a feed conversion of 2.10 and hens weighing on average 4.93 kg. When the cost of performance were compared between these two values, the drug-free hens cost only averaged 5.5 cents per hen, or roughly 1 cent per kg. raised. During the 3.5 years in the drug-free farm, no significant health problems that required veterinary treat- ment, including coccidiosis, were ever observed. We’d like to report that several readers contacted us and donated or lent their records long enough to permit transfer. We’d like to express our appreciation to those kind people. George Brentar 11 On Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2007 Patrolman George M. Brentar, badge #93, a 22-year veteran of the Euclid Police Department assigned to the Traffic Unit, lost his life while in the performance of his duties. Ptl. Brentar was attempting to catch up to a speeder on North Lakeland Boulevard when his car (#32) hydroplaned on the rain slick roadway, spun around and hit a pole. The patrol car burst into flames and fellow police officers and firefighters from three different departments could do nothing as the flames were too intense to get close to help. Ptl. Brentar is the first police officer to die in the line of duty in the history of the Euclid Police Department. News of Ptl. Brentar’s death hit all members of the Euclid Police Department like a ton of bricks. From the dispatchers, secretaries, corrections officers, records personnel, volunteers and auxiliary police officers, we all grieved in our own way and we also recall the fond memories of his time with his police family. The funeral was held on Monday, Oct. 15 at St. Bede the Venerable Catholic Church in Mentor with several priests and deacons in attendance. The church was filled to capacity with Ptl. Brentar’s family, friends and his police family gathered to say goodbye at the funeral Mass. As the hearse pulled up to the church, there were over 1,000 police officers lined up at attention in the parking lot to pay their respects to Ptl. Brentar. There was a feeling of grief and sadness throughout the funeral Mass. Chief James Repicky delivered a very moving eulogy in tribute to Ptl. Brentar’s life. In his remarks. Chief Repicky touched on Ptl. Brentar’s great love for his family and his job. At the conclusion of Chief Repicky’s remarks and as a farewell tribute to a great police officer. Chief Repicky said these words: “Patrol Officer George M. Brentar Badge #93 Car #32 10-42” (Code 10-42 in police ter-uiinology means: END OF watch or end of tour.) At the conclusion of the funeral Mass, the thousand or so police officers went ahead of the funeral procession to All Souls Cemetery to prepare a final police salute to Ptl. Brentar. As I was riding in the funeral procession with my fellow correc- tions officers, I had an opportunity to reflect on my memories of working with Ptl. Brentar. George was always a consummate professional. He always helped me out in my capacity as a commander/shift supervisor at The Euclid City Jail. When he brought in a prisoner, he stayed with us at the jail until we were all safe and the prisoner was secured so that my corrections officers could do their job. He was always ready to help out when asked and even if you didn’t ask, he was there anyway. When he saw that I was stressed out and tired in my dealings with inmates, George always used to say, “Vic, slow down; don’t let them get to you; it’s not worth it. It will all be okay.” And that was one of the themes of Chief Repicky’s remarks in his eulogy at the funeral Mass. It was George’s favorite words, “Slow down,” “take the time to spend with your family; take a vacation; fill your days with what life has to offer.” In my personal life, I have always believed and tried to take the time to spend with family, friends. Greet one another in a courteous way, say good morning, thank you, goodbye, help one another in times of need. Shake hands with one another, lead by example - you will always be rewarded in the end. And as Chief Repicky stated, “You never know when life’s journey will come to an end.” The entire day and in fact the entire week was filled with such a wide range of emotions, from sadness and grief on the loss of a member of the police family, all the way to pride and friendship to be a member of the Euclid Police family. Words cannot accurately describe what I witnessed that day. At the front entrance to All Souls Cemetery were two Hook-n-Ladder fire trucks with their ladders extended and in the center was a large U.S. flag hanging in the air between the two ladders, a greeting to Ptl. Brentar’s hearse as it entered the cemetery. At the gravesite, Ptl. Brentar was given a final farewell by his brothers in blue, a salute in unison, a 21-gun salute by the Euclid Police Rifle Squad, and at the conclusion all civilian and sworn members of the Euclid Police Department had an opportunity to file past his casket with a rose or simply to touch the casket to say goodbye one final time. Ptl. Brentar, you will be missed by us all. May you rest in peace, George. Brentar Delivered by Chief James Repicky at Funeral Mass, Monday, Oct. 15, 2007 On Thursday, Oct 11, I was asked by Linda, George’s wife, to say a few words on George’s behalf. At this time I am honored to do so. Our hearts are broken today. We have lost a member of our family - and we lost him way too soon. George Brentar had two great loves in his life: his family and his job. Family was always first. His wife and the kids were George’s main priority and the love of his life. There was never any doubt about that. Linda, Erica, and Michael, words cannot express our deep sorrow for your loss. To George’s mom, Carol, his brothers, Greg and Torry, and sisters Karen and Janet, we join our heartfelt sadness to yours. George was important to many people. He was the neighborhood coach. He would gather all the local kids together for football games, and the basketball hoop in the yard was constantly in use. “Sports are important,” George would say. He was a man of action and few words. George was bom, raised and spent his entire life working in the City of Euclid. He truly loved the City and was dedicated to service. He was highly respected by both his coworkers and supervisors, but that doesn’t say nearly enough. How do you wrap 22 years of service into a few minutes? How do you summarize George’s life? In many ways George embodied what it meant to be a good police officer. He was extremely hardworking and thorough in everything he did. Over the years he received numerous letters from his supervisors commending him on his performance, and he was nominated three times for Officer of the Year. The dictionary defines “integrity” as adherence to moral principles. George had integrity. He once told me his father said to him, “If you can get out of bed, you can go to work.” George never called in sick. That was his work ethic. He truly loved his job. Not long ago he received the ‘Exceptional Service Award” for catching a bank robber. George saw the suspect, a man half his age, and said to himself, “I’m not letting him get away from me.” And he didn’t. George chased down and caught the man. He was good at being a police officer. He liked it, and it showed. George spent last year working our Traffic Division where he excelled. A major part of his day was spent trying to get speeding motorists to slow down. The roads need to be safe for all. It’s tragic, and ironic, that we lost him this way. But, knowing George, I have to believe that he has a message for all of us, and I believe it would be this SLOWDOWN. SLOW DOWN - take the time to spend with your children. They grow up fast -don’t miss it. TT t seems to me that I I missed a few pilgrimages JLthis year. Last year the journeys - pilgrimages --made a marked high point for me. Now, I have been inspired to make up these rewarding experiences with the opportunities at hand. Our church of St. Mary of Assumption in Cleveland, • and many other parishes around the country, as I found out on the internet, have a weekly devotions, a day or a half a day a week. Our parish decided to have this beautiful visitation to the Eucharistic Christ every Thursday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. This good news has been a well-kept secret, because only a few parishioners respond to this beautiful opportunity of Eucharistic devotion. Why Eucharistic devotion? We need to pray for the reparation for our sins and the sins of the world. Reparation to the Sacred Heart offended in the Blessed Sacrament. We need silence and silence is the depth of our prayer. We can’t neglect the prayers and the rosary and we need to learn more of the life of Christ. The children should, become familiar with the message of Fatima. Our Lord can bring us an ever-deeper understanding of the love of God and the endurance that comes from Christ. All of us are invited to adore Christ. You are not too young or too old to make a simple things in life that make it all worthwhile. SLOW DOWN - take a family vacation. These times, and their memories, will enrich and fulfill your lives. SLOW DOWN - fill your days with what life has to offer. You never know when the journey will come to an end. To the Brentar family, words seem horribly inadequate in expressing our gratitude to you for sharing this truly remarkable man with us. We have been blessed to have known George. We all can learn to know, to serve and to love God better every day, if we do not waste any time and make every moment that we have, the business of love. (4-serving size each) Jell-O Vanilla Flavor Instant Pudding & Pie Filling 1 tsp. ground cinnamon Vi tsp. ground ginger V* tsp. ground cloves MIX cream cheese, 1 Tbsp. milk and the sugar in large bowl until well blended. Gently stir in half of the whipped topping. Spread onto bottom of crust. POUR 1 cup milk into large bowl. Add pumpkin, dry pudding mixes and spices. Beat with wire whisk 2 min. or until well blended. Here are some tips to help you choose one: • Avoid flimsy disposable roasters that can be unsafe and environmentally unfriendly. Instead, choose a Granite Ware roaster, which is very inexpensive, environmentally safe and will last a lifetime. Choose a heavy roaster that is designed to accommodate the weight of a turkey.______ • Porcelain-on-steel roasters provide an even heat distribution for uniformly cooked, beautiful turkeys. This is a favorite of both Eddie and Kevin. It uses the white sauce recipe in the original cookbook (below). Ingredients: 1 or 2 heads of cauliflower Salt & pepper 1 or 2 slices of bread, cubed Parmesan cheese White sauce (recipe below, medium); for 1 head, use 2 C of milk; for 2 heads use 3 to 4 C Directions: Cut cauliflower into small pieces and par-boil. Drain, Layer cauliflower pieces in a large casserole dish, cubed bread and sprinkle with parmesan, then pour some white sauce over it. Repeat until all cauliflower and white sauce are used up, or until the casserole is full. Sprinkle more parmesan over the top. Bake at 350° for about an hour. WHITE SAUCE Ingredients Milk Flour Butter Thin 1C IT IT Medium 1C 2T 2T Thick 1C 3-4 T 2-3T Directions Melt butter and blend flour to make a smooth roux. And what an honor we had hosting top musicians from Slovenia who are serving in the Slovenian Army and also a couple of police officers-musicians. The performance of Brass Band Quintet was excellent starting the event with fanfare composition and then with both national anthems. The hall was full and the people were overwhelmed with the performance of the musicians and could not stop rewarding them with applause. Our Consul General Dr. Zvone Žigon greeted the crowd after the anthems. He was very instrumental in bringing the group of entertainers to Slovenska Pristava, and we thank him and the band for making our day. The brass band was entertaining with a variety of songs including the theme from the Pink Panther movie for more than half an hour. Since we planned to hang the picture of the late Senator Frank Lausche donated by Judge Ronald Šuster, we asked the judge to tell the audience important life achievements of the senator. The judge did a very fine job of telling the people about Lausche’s sterling qualities. After the judge finished his talk, James Debevec surprised us again. The Frances and Jane S. Lausche Foundation donated $20,000 for tables and chairs for the lodge. Unbelievable. James and Madeline Debevec with John Urbancich are in charge of the fund. A sincere thank you to all three of you for helping Slovenska Pristava once again. After this pleasant surprise we placed the picture in the entrance vestibule. Our favorite Council General Dr. Zvone Žigon, with his lovely wife, Irena, joined us for this little ceremony. By no means was this the end of the evening. Our Slovenian Band, meanwhile, got ready and started to play for dancing. The dance floor was immediately full of enthusiastic dancing couples. The musicians kept playing and the two singers, Kati and Matjaž were just awesome. We could not believe our eyes and ears that an army band guys can be such good entertainers. It took a while before they quit. Well, this party was not over yet. Now our Pristava musicians took over. Stan Teskač with his usual help and female vocalists Vida and Justi entertained again for another hour. These guys are great, too, and as usual they performed for free again. Thank you for once more for helping Slovenska Pristava. Since this was a Sunday night, we could not stay too late, but it seemed to me that the Slovenian Army Band guys really liked our company and just could not part from Pristava. Dalje je bilo sporočeno, čeprav še vedno neuradno, da je bila volilna udeležba 55,94-odstotna. Glasovalo naj bi torej 962.304 vo-lilcev. To je nekaj manj kot v prvem krogu, ko je bila volilna udeležba tudi nizka, vendar kakih 57 odstotkov. S protikandidatom Peterletom, ki je novemu predsedniku že bil čestital, sta se tudi že rokovala. Predstavniki strank (SDS, NSi, SLS), ki so podpirale Peterleta, so nad njegovim izredno obsežno izgubo izrazili presenečenje, levičarske stranke, ki so se zavzemale za Turkom, so pa rekle, da so volilni izid kar pričakovale. Slovenska tiskovna agencija (STA) je poročala, da so politični analitiki bolj ali manj. pričakovali izid. Precej zgovoren je bil Miro Kline s Fakultete za družbene vede (FDV). Dejal je, da je izid volitev logična posledi- ca trenutnega razmerja sil na trgu političnih idej v Sloveniji. Predavatelj na FDV Matevž Tomšič je pa poudaril, da je Peterle ostal na približno enakem odstotku javne podpore v drugem krogu volitev, kakor ga je imel v prvem krogu. Največja volilna udeležba je bila v volilni enoti Ljubljana Center (61,8%), sledijo volilna enota Ljubljana-Bežigrad (61,26), volilna enota Kranj (58,37), volilna enota Novo mesto (57,53), Celje (56,84) in Postojna (56,49). Najmanjša volilna udeležba je bila v volilni enoti Maribor, kjer je glasovalo le 51,81 odstotka volilcev. V svojem komentarju za STA je prof. Kline rekel, da je bil rezultat volitev povsem v skladu z napovedmi: “Iz rezultatov te tekme za predsednika se bodo dobri politični strategi zagotovo nekaj naučili. Kot izhodišče vsakega načrtovanja kampanje ali političnega delovanja je nujno potrebno upoštevati klimo v volilnem telesu. Iz vsega dogajanja in rezultatov raziskav javnega mnenja je več kot očitno, da gre za dolgoročen zasuk v smeri proti levici,” je dejal Kline, ki je dodal, da izid volitev za predsednika Slovenije nikakor ne pomeni, da je možno napovedati rezultat parlamentarnih volitvah, ki bodo jeseni 2008. “S svojim delovanjem lahko obe strani vplivata na takšen trend. Pri tem je kristalno jasno, da je sedaj v prednosti levica, zato morajo biti ukrepi in delovanje desnega bloka toliko bolj premišljeni ter verjetno tudi bolj radikalno drugačni,” meni Kline. ZMAGOVALEC IN PORAŽENEC - Fotografija zgoraj je nastala po prvem krogu predsedniških volitev 21. oktobra, ko je že bilo znano, da se bosta v drugem, končnem krogu pomerila Danilo Turk (levo) in Lojze Peterle in sicer na volitvah 11. novembra. Na teh volitvah je z ogromno večino zmagal Turk, ki bo zaprisegel za novega predsednika Slovenije 23. decembra letos, s tem pa postal tretji predsednik v zgodovini neodvisne Slovenije, po Milanu Kučanu in Janezu Drnovšku. BERNARDA FINK INZKO ... Dragim prijateljem in znancem v Clevelandu! Mesec dni je potekel, odkar sem bila pri vas v Clevelandu, in nekaj dni. odkar smo odpeli-odigrali zadnjo 2. Mahlerjevo simfonijo v Musikvereinu na Dunaju, kot zaključek dolge in uspešne turneje odličnega Clevelandskega orkestra. Na tale način bi vam hotela še enkrat izraziti mojo globoko hvaležnost za tako presenetljivo topel sprejem! Med vami sem začutila bratsko vzdušje, ki je mogoče, kadar srca bijejo za iste vrednote lepega in resničnega. Občudujem vašo zvestobo domovini in ljubezen do naraščaja in bodočnosti, ki vas spodbuja k fleksibilnosti in kreativnosti. Ko stojim na odrih po svetu želim opevati božjo dobroto in vračati v pomnoženi obliki talente, ki mi jih je Stvarnik dal. Prisrčen pozdrav! - Bernarda Fink Inzko Bernarda Fink nastopila v slovitem Carnegie Hallu s Clevelandskim orkestrom NEW YORK, NY - V letošnji koncertni sezoni je dvorana Carnegie Hall gostila Clevelandski simfonični orkester. Ta orkester je slaven in ima bogato tradicijo. Dirigenti, ki so doslej vodili orkester. so sama znana imena svetovnega slovesa. V New Yorku je orkester koncertiral tri dni. Pri zadnjem koncertu, ki je bil v četrtek, 18. oktobra, je na njem nastopila nam že dobro znana mezzosopranistka Bernarda Fink. Na sporedu je bila 2. simfonija Gustava Mahlerja "Vstajenje". Vlogo je imela tudi sopranistka M. Hartelius. (Op. ur. AD: Ponovitev pro- grama 11. in 13. oktobra v Clevelandu.) Skladbo sestavlja pet stavkov in vsak stavek je skladba zase. Bernarda Fink je nastopila v četrtem stavku z meditativ- nim napevom "Urlicht". Z bogatim, mehkim in žametastim glasom in v koralnem duhu je začela peti svoj spev. Podajanje po nemški vokalni tradiciji je bilo tako lepo, da je poslušalce prevzelo in ravno ta pesnitev, ki jo je odpela ob koncu četrtega stavka, je bila uvod v “Vstajenje”. Zadnji stavek se je začel bučno, a vse se je utišalo, ko je začel peti zbor. Ta je pel tiho in slovesno. Ravno ta del simfonije, ta koral, je bil morda najlepši del skladbe. Glasnost se je stopnjevala do trenutka glasbene “eksplozije”, ki je naznanila “vstajenje”. Ravno tako tudi solistki, ki sta v tem delu "dialogirali” tako med seboj kot tudi z zborom. Doživetje je bilo enkratno. Ob koncu je dvorana nagradila orkester, zbor in pevki s stoječimi ovacijami. Koncerta se je udeležilo lepo število Slovencev in Slovenk. Po koncertu je bil sprejem za Bernardo, ki je prišla s hčerko, v stanovanju dr. Cirila Godca., ki živi oddaljen le kak mestni blok od koncertne dvorane. Naj dodam, da dr. Godec živi na 69. nadstropju stolpnice in tako ima prelep pogled na mesto, posebno ponoči, ko je razsvetljeno. Sergej Delak Generalni konzulat Republike Slovenije v Clevelandu SPOROČA da je rok za vlaganje zahtev upravičenih oseb na podlagi Zakona o popravi krivic odpravljen. Rok za vlaganje zahtev za odškodnine je sedaj neomejen, torej 31. 12. 2007 ni več omejitev. Kljub temu pa priporočamo. da vloge vložite čimprei. saj so postopki dolgo-grajni. V tej zvezi še dopolnilo informacije za potomce upravičencev: 1. - v primeru, da je v družini več otrok in je njihov oče (ali mati) umrl v ZDA, lahko vloži zahtevo samo eden od otrok, odškodnina pa se bo dodelila šele potem ko bo pristojno okrajno sodišče izdalo sklep o dedovanju vsem dedičem. 2. - v primeru, da je v družini več otrok in je bil njihov oče po vojni ubit. pa ima vsak od otrok pravico neposredno zahtevati priznanje statusa svojca žrtve, in vsak od otrok je upravičen do odškodnine po po vojni pobitem očetu (ali materi). Čeprav smo vsem, ki so nas po tem vprašali, to že pojasnili, pa ponovno obveščamo tudi, da v primeru zahtev za tovrstne odškodnine prevodi dokumentov v angleščini, nemščini ali italijanščini niso potrebni. Gregorija Rožmana Dragi romarji, tu stojimo na kraju, kjer se naše življenje dotika večnosti. Tu se človek lažje zave, kam se naša zemska pota nenehno iztekajo. Romarji smo na čudoviti poti življenja, na poti. na katero nas je postavila božja previdnost. Svet je ta kraj, božja njiva, kjer počivajo naši duhovniki-patri frančiškani. ki so posvetili svoje življenje Bogu v njegovo slavo in dobrobit rojakov. Tu pod križem, na katerem je razpet božji Sin, je grob našega pokojnega duhovnega pastirja dr. Gregorija Rožmana, ki se je odzval vabilu Njega, ki je iskal delavcev za svoj vinograd. Ko je dr. Gregorij Rožman leta 1929 sprejel škofovsko službo, je bila, kot sam pravi v enem izmed pisem, “...moja duša zavita v vihar temnih slutenj”. Zato je izbral škofovsko geslo: crucis pon-dus - teža križa in plačilo. "Tedaj sem Bogu daroval tudi sledeče. Naj umr-jem v zaničevanju ali pozabljenju. naj bo moj grob neznan, naj me zgodovina še tako črno in kritično slika in naj moje ime čisto izgine, da se nikdar in nikjer ne omenja več - samo da bi kraljestvo božje raslo, se utrjevala v dušah, samo da bi se čim več duš zveličalo, samo da bi božja čast rasla in se večala. Gospod, sprejmi to žrtvino, če je Tebi všeč in če služi Tvoji časti in zveličanju duš. In če bi zdaj Gospod sprejel to mojo žrtvico? Če bi me prijel za besedo, ali naj se pritožujem? Ali ne morem le reči hvala Ti, sveti Gospod, da se po-služiš mene nevrednega za Tvoje svete cilje? Hvalimo Gospoda za vse. prav za vse!" Vihar temnih slutenj se je res razbesnel in potegnil v svoj uničujoči vrtinec tudi naš slovenski narod. Poleg tega, da je tujec uničeval slovenski narod, ga razseljeval in potujčeval, se je začela tudi komunistična revolucija, ki je izrabila nesrečni čas okupacije, da je v svoje mreže zajela marsikoga, ki si ni bil svest, kaj se skriva pod “osvobodilno fronto”. Veliko (pa) jih je spoznalo, da z OF nekaj ni v redu! saj pobijajo naše lastne slovenske brate. Naš škof dr. Gregorij Rožman je dobro poznal okrožnico papeža Pija XI. iz leta 1935 Divini Re-demptoris, o brezbožnem komunizmu. On sam in ves ostali svet a je tudi vedel, kako dosledno je bila v Sovjetski zvezi pre-ganjena vera, kako je bilo porušenih nešteto cerkva, kako je bila onemogočena vsaka verska vzgoja in preganjanje ter pobijanje verujočih. Poučen tako o naravi komunizma, ne bi bil dober pastir svojih vernikov, če jih ne bi začel svariti pred grozečo nevarnostjo komunizma. Podobna svarila obstajajo že v svetem pismu stare zaveze: Ogibaj se slabe družbe. JOŽETA RANTA Slovenski eksodus leta 1945 Dr. Jože Rant ni doživel izdaje svoje nove in zadnje knjige. Po težki bolezni je 23. avgusta 2007 umrl v Buenos Airesu in je tam pokopan. Koliko truda je vložil v to svoje zadnje delo, Slovenski eksodus leta 1945, jasno razvidno na 352 straneh z mnogimi opombami pod črto in z obsežnim seznamom virov in fotografij. Vključuje tudi seznam v knjigi navedenih kratic. Prav na začetku pa najdemo dve strani s posnetkom Križanega iz Kočevskega Roga. Na recto strani so vrstice iz Ps. 107. 6-7 “Vpili so h Gospodu v svojih stiskah...” nato pa sledi možnost za vpis kdo komu podarja knjigo, na verso strani pa za navedbo “žrtve vojne in revolucije v naši družini”. Ker bo knjiga dosegljiva tudi v španskem in angleškem jeziku, je avtor dodal slovenski izdaji poleg slovenskega tudi kratek povzetek v teh dveh jezikih. Prevode sta pripravila prof. Maria Rosa Rapisarda (Resumen) in Jerry Zupan (Summary). Izdelavo platnic pa je oblikovala Monika Urbanija Koprivnikar. V Zahvali dr. Rant zapiše, da je zamisel za to delo prišla od Rudija Kolariča iz Clevelanda, Ohio, ki je vse tri izdaje tudi finančno omogočil. Za vzpodbudo in pomoč pa se zahvaljuje tudi svojim kolegom v gimnazijah v begunskih taboriščih Pegge-tzu in v Spitalu v Avstriji in navaja njihova imena: Srečko Gaser. Ivan Hauptman. Zalka Hirsche-gger Likozar, dr. France Jeglič, dr. Tine Meršol in Marjan Loboda. Knjiga nima ne osebnega ne stvarnega kazala, kar je razumljivo že po branju nekaj strani, ker bi bilo kazalo izredno obsežno. Namesto kazala avtor uporablja “mastne črke” (bold), s katerimi v besedilu "označuje skrajšane vire" in s tem olajšuje iskanje podrobnosti v posameznih poglavjih. Uvodna beseda in 'Vprašanje...in Odgovor’ Rantove Uvodne besede so bile že v celoti objavljene v Ameriški Domovini (July 12. 2007. str. 16). kakor tudi skoraj celo 1. poglavje "Vprašanje...in Odgovor” (July 12. 2007, str. 16 in nadaljevanja 19. in 26 julija). Ti izvlečki iz knjige so bili najprej objavljeni v Buenos Airesu v Meddob-ju. Letnik XL, štev. 3-4. K temu dodamo še dr. Kantovo osmrtnico z življenjepisom, ki jo je pos- redoval Rantov sošolec Marjan Loboda in je bila objavljena v Ameriški Domovini 6. septembra 2007. str. 16-17. Namen knjige je večstranski. Prvi namen, kako pojasniti potomcem v zdomstvu, zakaj so njihovi starši ali stari starši zapustili Slovenijo maja 1945. leta. Drugi namen je istoveten z mnogimi avtorji iste teme. seznaniti druge narodnosti “kaj se je dogajalo v Sloveniji med 2. svetovno vojno in po njej”. Tretji pa opisuje naselitve, prilagoditve, in uspehe tistih, ki so našli nove domovine drugje po svetu in o njihovi zvestobi slovenstvu. V uvodu avtor dr. Rant zapiše, da “V pričujočem spisu ... ne gre za dosežke kakega izvirnega raziskovanja ... in še manj za nova zgodovinska odkritja. Gre samo za ... kratek zapis, sestavljen na podlagi v Virih navedenih del”. Kako dr. Rant doseže začrtane cilje? Z izbiro virov, z opombami pod črto, z mnogimi fotografijami, in z osebnimi pripombami. Viri Na katera dela se je naslonil pri pisanju Slovenski eksodus leta 1945 povzamemo iz seznama navedenih virov. Teh je skupno 148. V veliki večini so viri v slovenščini z izjemo osmih v angleščini, štirih v španščini, dveh v nemščini in enega v francoskem jeziku; virov v slovenskem jeziku je torej 133. Nekatera od teh del so bila prevedena v slovenščino iz drugih jezikov, avtor pa vključuje le bibliografske podatke slovenskih izdaj. V glavnem periodika (članki v revijah in časopisih) ni vključena, kar je pri obsežnosti celotne vsebine povsem razmulji-vo. V pomoč bralkam in bralcem v Uvodu opredeli glavne avtorje virov po svetovnem nazoru in z vključitvijo nekaterih imen. Govor je o režimskih, protirevolucionarnih, in strokovnih zgodovinarjih, kakor tudi d “nekdanjih pripadnikih OF oz. KPS”. Opombe pod črto V sedemnajstih poglavjih je skupno 1020 opomb pod črto. Vsako poglavje začenja s številko 1., kar omogoča hitrejši dostop do vsebine posameznih poglavij. Skupno število tisoč dvajset opomb dokazuje avtorjev namen vključiti vse vire. ki so mu bili dostopni. Čeprav opozarja v Uvodu, da ne piše znanstvene razprave o temi izraženi v naslovu, v opombah pogosto izrazi svoje misli in mnenja o gradivu, ki ga vključuje. Bogata izbira fotografij Med stranmi 30 in 31 najdemo 47 barvnih posnetkov ali fotografij, med temi pet zemljevidov, ena stran s posnetki štirih najpomembnejših slovenskih zgodovinskih mejnikov. ostale fotografije pa predstavljajo lepote Slovenije. Med temi lepotami pa se bosta vsak bralec in bralka za nekaj trenutkov gotovo ustavila pri št. 17: “Množična morišča v Sloveniji po narodnosti” (Ferenc 2005, 113). Bogato slikovno gradivo najdemo na koncu vsakega poglavja. Že samo pregled tega gradiva nakaže celotni potek dogajanj Eksodusa*, vseh njegovih posledic, kakor tudi življenja 1945 begunskih skupnosti v novih domovinah. Iz Vsebine Kazalo na začetnih straneh knjige v glavnem razdeli sedemnajst poglavij v tri dele. Prvi del, po uvodnih besedah, se osredotoči na leto 1945 in vse do povojnih pobojev. To so poglavja 1—13. Drugi del vključuje poglavja 14—16. “Življenje in delovanje v begunskih taboriščih": “V svobodnem svetu”; “Delo za ... svo-(DALJE na str. 18) Dr. Jože Rant oktobra 2006 s sinom Pablom Dr. JOŽE RANT (16. februar 1931 - 23. avgust 2007) Dr. Jože Rant je bil avtor nove knjige, ki ponuja pregled zgodovine slovenske politične emigracije. Knjiga v slovenskem jeziku je že na razpolago pri Slovenski pisarni v Clevelandu, v kratkem bo izšel tudi prevod v angleščini. Sledeči članek je bil objavljen v reviji “Moja Slovenija” oktobra letos in je posredovan v celoti. Ur. AD ❖ Daleč od domovine, v daljni Argentini, je prenehalo biti srce teologa, filozofa - predvsem pa nepozabnega prijatelja in zavednega Slovenca, dr. Jožeta Ranta. Strla ga je zahrbtna bolezen, ki se ji je upiral z velikim življenjskim optimizmom in upanjem. Številnim Slovencem v Argentini, v Sloveniji in po svetu pa bo ostal še dolgo v spominu - predvsem kot pisec številnih “Pisem uredniku”, v katerih je grajal in opozarjal na napake, sem ter tja pa koga tudi pohvalil, če si je to resnično zaslužil. Vedno pa je bil pripravljen pomagati - ko je šlo za delo v skupnosti, pomoč pri uredniškem delu, predavanjih ... le v skrajni sili je ‘ kdaj odklonil svoje sodelovanje. Žal so mnogi to njegovo delavnost tudi izkoriščali. Dr. Jože Rant je bil dobesedno vržen v tuji svet. Ob koncu vojne je celotna Rantova družina delila begunsko usodo -najprej v begunskih taboriščih v Peggezu in kas- neje v Spittalu, leta 1948 pa so se preselili v Argentino. Tu se je odločil za študij teologije na slovenskem semenišču v San Luisu in bil posvečen v duhovnika leta 1956 v Androgueju. Nato je študij nadaljeval na teološki fakulteti jezuitskega “Co-legio Maximo San Jose” v San Miguelu - doktoriral je iz moralne teologije (1960). V kasnejših letih je dosegel še magisterij (1975) in doktorat iz filozofije (1991). Čeprav je opravljal številne cerkvene in profesorske službe, ki so ga dnevno zaposlovale po skoraj ves dan, je ob tem še vedno našel čas tudi za študij, predvsem za sprotno spremljanje znanstvenih dosežkov (zlasti filozofskih) v Argentini, v svetu ter v Sloveniji. Mnogi smo se spraševali, kje vendar najde čas za vse te aktivnosti? Toda ni bil le znanstvenik, ki bi večino časa prebil v zatohli sobi sredi knjig in papirjev - našel je tudi čas za sprehode, za pripravo asade, celo za kakšno potovanje po prostrani Argentini (še letos Spomladi si je ogledal skrajni jug te raznolike dežele in nam s poti poslal številne nepozab-* ne fotografije in na tej poti pretrpel tudi težko prometno nesrečo, ki se je vseeno srečno končala). Tretji del vključuje sedemnajsto poglavje, pogled nazaj “Po šestdesetih letih”. O Avtorju Dr. Rant poudarja v Uvodu, da ta knjiga ni izvirno raziskovanje niti ne kakšnih zapisov novih zgodovinskih odkritij, prav tam pa tudi zapiše: “...da skuša knjiga popisati dogodke tako, kot so se dogajali, to se pravi, predmetno (objektivno)". K temu pa še doda svoje prepričanje z besedami: “Možno ... je več razlag: toda samo ena se približuje resničnosti in s tem resnici”. Sedemnajsto poglavje je možno razložiti kot avtorjeve zaključne misli na to tragično dobo slovenske zgodovine in kot odgovor k prvotnemu namenu knjige, kako pojasniti potomcem dogodke leta 1945 z vsemi posledicami. V Eksodusu 1945 avtor predstavi skrbno študijo vključenih virov kakor tudi svojih osebnih pogledov na to polpreteklo dobo. Zaključne besede Vse trpljenje združeno z Eksodus 1945 in s še težjimi posledicami, je povsem jasno izraženo na obrazu slovenske matere, katere skrb je brez dvoma razvidna na njenem obrazu in z njenim pogledom nekam v neznano... Vsem, ki bodo vzeli knjigo v roko, bo že sa- mo pogled na to begunsko mater na naslovni strani ovitka nakazalo tragično vsebino Rantove knjige. Gledano nazaj, po več kot šestdesetih letih, ostaja potrjeno, kar je dr. Janez Rotar zapisal v delnem naslovu ene prvih knjig o Vetrinjski tragediji, da so vsa dejanja okrog Eksodus 1945 in kar je sledilo. Mora in bolečina slovenskega naroda. dr. Metod M. Milač Syracuse, New York Dr. Jože Rant (nadaljevanje s str. 17) Po letu 1975, ko je izstopil iz cerkvene službe in se poročil (leta 1977 se mu je rodil sin Pablo) - se je strokovno vse bolj posvečal organizaciji univerzitetnega študija in praktično to delo opravljal tudi še po tem, ko se je uradno upokojil (leta 1995). Po razpadu prvega zakona je končno našel oporo in razumevanje ob drugi ženi, njegovi nekdanji učenki Mariji Rosi (ki jo je ljubeče klical -Maruča). Za pokojnim dr. Jožetom Rantom je ostal tudi obsežen bibliografski opus (žal je večina del v španščini) - več strokovnih razprav, študij in predavanj, ki so jih objavile univerze, kjer je predaval. Nekaj svojih del je izdal tudi v samozaložbi - predvsem s področja filozofye znanosti, antropologije in etike. Nekaj zadnjih let se je posvečal predvsem študiju zgodovine slovenske politične emigracije. Zagotovo je njegovo najobsežnejšo delo “Zbornik dela v zvestobi in ljubezni: 1948—1998” - bogat jubilejni zbornik ob 50-letnici društva “Zedinjena Slovenija” (ki ima prek 800 strani velikega formata in je tudi bogato ilustriran). Leta 2003 pa je uredil in za tisk pripravil še delo pokojnega brata Pavleta “To sem bil: prispevek k zgodovini slovenske politične emigracije”. Žal pa ni dočakal izida svoje zadnje knjige, kratkega pregleda zgodovine slovenske politične emigracije (SPE), ki naj bi bila namenjena predvsem potomcem - drugi in tretji generaciji SPE-ja. Poleg slovenske izdaje naj bi bila knjiga prevedena še v angleščino in španščino. V enem svojih zadnjih pisem pa mi je med drugim omenil: “Veš, da sem se res spravil na pisanje spominov v slovenščini? A bodo bolj osebni, ker mi manjka dokumentov in dopisovanja. (...) Bo pa tudi trajalo...” Vsi skupaj lahko le obžalujemo, da mu je smrt, sredi tega pomembnega dela, iz rok iztrgala pero... Dr. Rozina Švent V BLAG SPOMIN OB 1. MATTHEW Vnukinji: MIRIAM, BRITTANY Sestra: Joži. mož: Rudi ter sorodniki v Kanadi in Sloveniji Na volitvah za predsednika Slovenije v nedeljo. 21. oktobra, se je uresničila predvsem tista napoved javnomnenjskih raziskav in političnih analitikov. da bo razlika v glasovih, ki jih bodo prejeli trije najpomembnejši kandidati, majhna. Prav so imeli tudi tisti, ki so napovedovali porast glasov za Zmaga Jelinči-ča-Plemenitega. Zmagal ni nihče od sedmih kandidatov, zato bo potreben drugi krog volitev, ki bodo v (to) nedeljo, 11. novembra. Vanj sta bila izvoljena Lojze Peterle, ki je v prvem krogu prejel 28,54% glasov. Na drugem mestu je Danilo Turk. ki je zbral približno 24,52% glasov, tesno za petami pa mu je sledil Mitja Gaspari s 24,15% glasov. Razlika med njima je bila manj kot 4.000 glasov. Na četrto mesto se je uvrstil Zmago Jelinčič-Premeniti s skoraj 20% glasov. Darko Kranjc je zbral dobra dva odstotka. Elena Pečarič skoraj en odstotek, Monika Piberl pa okoli pol odstotka gla-slov. Lojze Peterle, ki je prej začel volilno kampanjo, je zanjo porabil veliko denarja in bil deležen močne podpore svojega volilnega štaba in drugih sodelavcev, je prejel kar okoli 15 odstotkov manj glasov, kot so napovedovali. V pripravah na drugi krog se bo moral zelo potruditi in si zagotoviti učinkovito podporo strank, ki ga podpirajo,, da bo nemara lahko izvoljen za najpomembnejšo osebnost slovenske države. Sicer pa bodo uradne izide prvega kroga volitev objavili šele 29. ali 30. oktobra, ko bodo prispeli volilni izidi slovenskih državljanov, ki žive v tujini. Pri tem pa se je hudo zapletlo. Državna volilna komisija je namreč v tujino poslala zelo veliko število, menda okoli 50.000, neizpolnjenih glasovnic, pri čemer pa nimajo zanesljivih podatkov o številu in naslovih naših rojakov v tujini, ki imajo volilno pravico. V praksi je bilo mogoče, da so volilci lahko glasovali dvakrat, po pošti in pri slovenskih di-plomatsko-konzularnih predstavništvih. Neki slovenski državljan v Zagrebu je povedal, da je dobil kar tri glasovnice in bi zato lahko kar trikrat volil. Mitja Gaspari je zaradi omenjenih zapletov dejal, da bo o veljavnosti volitev morda moralo odločati oz. razsojati celo sodišče. V Sloveniji je za te volitve bilo nad milijon 720 tisoč volilnih upravičencev. Volilna udeležba pa je bila zgolj okoli 57-odstotna. Gregorija Rožmana. Doma vedo predvsem to, kar jih je učila uradna komunistična zgodovina, ki hoče uničiti versko, predvsem katoliško vzgojo. Zato tudi danes ne ovr-žejo sodbe vojaškega sodišča, ki je sodilo škofa Gregorija Rožmana kot izdajalca slovenskega naroda, to kljub vsej njegovi dobroti do vsakogar. V to obsodbo smo tako rekoč vključeni vsi verniki, ki še nosimo v srcu vero v našega nebeškega Očeta in njegovega Sina Jezusa Kristusa. Moderni človek, poln napuha, si domišlja, da je napreden, če odklanja in zavrača Boga, ker se hoče sam predstaviti za vsemogočnega in da je vse odvisno samo od njega. Domišljavost pa ga zapelje v zle naklepe, da bi podredil človeka sebi, zato uporablja vse zvijače: laži. obrekovanja, kriva pričevanja in sodbe. A glejte, vse to in podobno se je dogajalo pred 2000 leti. Po svetem pismu poznamo Njega, ki je učil in oznanjal blago-vest božjega kraljestva: ljubezen, dobroto, hvaležnost Bogu za vse njegove darove. Ozdravljal je bolnike, slepe, hrome, gluhoneme, izganjal zle duhove itd. in ko je šel v Jeruzalem, ga je množica pozdravljala: “Slava Sinu Davidovemu!" - kmalu za tem pa je nahujskana množica kričala: “Križaj ga, križaj ga!” Ob grobu našega duhovnega pastirja, škofa Gregorija Rožmana, mislimo na vso težo križa, ki ga je nosil v izredno težkih časih našega slovenskega naroda. Tu ob grobu prosimo Večnega, da po njegovem težkem križu in neštetih žrtvah ozdravi našo slovensko narodno dušo in izžene zle duhove iz človeških src, da bi mogli zopet zaživeti v bratski ljubezni in medsebojnem spoštovanju. Na nagradni natečaj se lahko prijavijo kandidatke in kandidati iz Republike Slovenije in tujine. Predmet nagradnega natečaja so uspešno zagovarjana diplomska, magistrska in doktorska dela na kateri koli univerzi v Sloveniji ali zunaj nje, ki obravnavajo tematike slovenskih skupnosti zunaj meja RS. Na natečaj Urad lahko kandidirajo tudi dela. ki kandidirajo na drugih podobnih natečajih. Upoštevana bodo dela zagovarjana v obdobju od 01.11.2006 do 31.10.2007. Nagrajena bodo tri dela za področje zamejstva in tri dela za področja izseljenstva, in sicer prvi nagradi za vsako od področij v višini 800 evrov ter po dve nagradi v višini 600 evrov. Na predlog strokovne komisije se Urad lahko odloči tudi o večjem številu nagrad v eni od kategorij, vendar skupno število nagrad ne sme presegati skupnega števila razpisanih nagrad (6) in fonda (4.000) evrov. Jan Martinček, Slovak po rodu, je predstojnik Kijevske skupnosti in vzgojitelj bogoslovcev. Skrbi tudi za novo nastajajočo župnijo. G. Tomaž Mavrič, ki ga dobro poznate, je vzgojitelj novincev. Ker letos ni noviciata, se še bolj zavzema za vodstvo Vincencije-ve konference in dobrodelnosti. G. Robert Puzia, doma s Poljske, pa je profesor filozofije v semenišču, kjer študirajo naši in drugi bogoslovci. Bogoslovci stanujejo v Kijevu, na predavanja pa se vsak dan vozijo v 40 km oddaljeno mesto Vorzel. Vladik Bismak je v 6. letniku in bo kmalu diakon. Septembra letos je izrekel večne zaobljube. Vladik Kučak, Jure Spak in Kolja Dobra so v 5. letniku. Saša Lukač obiskuje 2. letnik, najštevilnejši pa je L letnik, saj so kam kar štirje fantje: Vasja Zinič, Jerzy Gavluk. Sergij Pavlis in Sergej Selkovi. Ker Ukrajina še nima dovolj svojih profesorjev, v semenišču predavajo tudi profesorji s Poljske in so nekateri predmeti v poljščini. Da bi mogli slediti predavanjem, gredo bogoslovci pred začetkom študija na tečaj jezika v Krakov. Pred letom dni je svoje delovanje začela Vincencijeva konferenca, v kateri se pod vodstvom lazaristov zbirajo laiki in bogoslovci, ki bi radi delovali na področju dobrodelnosti. Člani te skupine enkrat tedensko obiskujejo brezdomce na železniški postaji in na drugih krajih ter jim delijo sendviče in čaj. Pogosto se zgodi, da je treba oskrbeti kakšno gnojno rano ali težko bolnemu človeku pomagati v bolnišnico. Seveda se brezdomcev v bolnišnicah branijo. Lažje uspemo, če človeku omogočimo, da se prej umije in preobleče, potem pa pokličemo prvo pomoč. Sodelujemo tudi s centrom socialne rehabilitacije brezdomcev, ter s centrom, ki ga vodijo protestanti. Samo s skupnim prizadevanjem lahko ljudem pomagamo. Velik izziv za nas so tudi otroci-sirote, okuženi z Aidsom. V eni izmed kijevskih bolnišnic imajo posebno sobo za nje, vendar primanjkuje osobje, ki bi jih negovalo. Po večini so še dojenčki stari od nekaj dni do dveh let. Pogosto se dogaja, da jih matere-narkomanke pustijo kar v porodišnici, od tam jih pripeljejo v bolnišnico ter pozneje v internat. Tem otrokom se prostovoljci iz konference posvečajo vsako soboto. Nadomeščajo jim mamo in očeta. Pomagamo tudi starejšim in bolnim ljudem po njihovih stanovanjih. Za nami je zelo lepa izkušnja pri pravoslavnem bolniku in njegovi ženi. Med nami so se spletle iskrene, prijateljske vezi. Oba sta bila do nas katoličanov zelo odprta. Oba sta želela prejeti zakramente iz rok katoliškega duhovnika. Ko je mož umrl, se je žena v veliki hvaležnosti pridružila konferenci, da bi tudi sama pomagala tistim, ki potrebujejo človeško pomoč. Srečujemo se tudi z družinami z več otroki. Tam so pogosto problemi zelo kompleksni. Primanjkuje hrane, obleke, posteljnine, dobre vzgoje, družbe sovrstnikov, vere... Starši se v življenju ne znajdejo, si ne znajo urediti, da bi sprejeli vse udobnosti, ki jih država nudi številnejšim družinam. Hvala Bogu, da je v konferenci kakšna pravnica, ki ve, kako se lotiti teh reči na pravem mestu. V Kijevu živiva dve Marijini sestri: s. Jožica Sterle in s Maria Meško. Lazaristi so našo Družbo povabili k sodelovanju na dobrodelnem področju. V dveh letih, odkar smo skupaj, smo poskusili odgovoriti na izzive, ki nam jih prinaša življenje. Vedno znova smo potrjeni v prepričanju, da se s sodelovanjem doseže veliko več kot s samostojnimi projekti. Tudi me dve se udeležujeva srečanj konference, skupaj z lazaristi in laiki obiskujeva ljudi in skušava pomagati. Doma pa vodiva kuharski in šiviljski tečaj za dekleta iz revnejših družin. Vsi skupaj smo prepričani, da nas je sem pripeljala božja Previdnost, ki nas spremlja in bla- goslavlja. Srečevanja z ljudmi so tisto najlepše, kar naše dneve naredi polne in lepe. Ljudi v Ukrajini je zelo zaznamovala diktatura komunističnega režima, vendar v njih ni mogla ubiti želje po Bogu in po vsem, kar je božjega. In če lahko komu pomagamo, da bi Gospoda bolj spoznali in se mu odprli, potem naše prizadevanje ni zaman. Ničesar pa ne bi mogli narediti, če nas ne bi duhovno in materialno podpiralo toliko skupin, med katerimi ste tudi vi, člani Misijonske Znamkarske Akcije.
