Že starozavezni preroki so govorili o poklicanosti vseh narodov k odrešenju. Sedaj že sveti papež Janez Pavel II. nadaljuje to, kar so učili cerkveni očetje. Njegov klic svetu »Ne bojte se Kristusa« preroško odmeva v sodobni čas. Njegovo delo in življenje to potrjujeta. V vsej cerkveni zgodovini so bili svetniki in svetnice vedno počelo in vir prenove v najtežjih okoliščinah. Danes so nam silno potrebni svetniki; zanje je treba nenehno prositi Boga. - (prim. Oznanjevalec 2004) Why Should Your Child Learn Slovenian? Our lives are busy. Our children's lives seem to be even busier than our own. Parents spend several evenings a week at music lessons, dance class, soccer fields, baseball diamonds, hockey rinks, pools, and volleyball courts. They spend several weekends every month at games and tournaments, meets, or recitals. They do this without blinking an eye because there is a benefit to children learning instruments or playing sports. Yet, when someone suggests that a child attend a language class for a few hours on a Saturday morning, everyone is "too busy" or doesn't see the worth in doing so. You may wonder why should you wake up early on Saturday mornings to take your son or daughter to school when you could be sleeping-in instead? Several studies have been done looking at children who learn a second or third language in comparison with those who don't. These studies show that there are clear benefits to children learning their mother tongue. I'm going to tell you about six: Greater Connection to their Cultural Background and Heritage: Learning your mother tongue allows the speaker to have a closer tie to their own cultural and linguistic community. Language and culture go hand in hand; you cannot learn one without the other. This is particularly important in smaller communities like ours. The greater the tie to the community, the stronger the community grows, and the longer it lasts. Learning Slovenian allows our children to develop a connection to our small community and allows them to learn the value of their culture and heritage. It fosters a sense of belonging and teaches children the importance of cultural diversity to society as a whole. Our cultural uniqueness should be celebrated, not ignored. Better Brain Development: This is particularly true for young children. Learning additional languages plays a huge role in the development of the executive functioning of the brain: multitasking, concentration, and focus. Studies have shown that children who learn multiple languages are better able to complete multiple tasks at the same time, are better able to focus their attention, and are better able to problem solve when compared to children who speak a single language. Brain scans of children who speak mul- 374 | VESTNIK 2019 tiple languages show more grey matter (the good stuff) in the regions of executive functions. Improved Academic Performance: Children who are bilingual or multilingual also perform better on school standardized tests. They have higher literacy rates and are more creative in their thinking. Greater creativity in thinking leads to better problem-solving skills as they are better able to see multiple viewpoints. The ability to see a problem from different sides is the cornerstone of problem-solving. Better Future Career and Earning Opportunities: The ability to speak languages other than English literally opens doors for your child in his or her future. It increases your child's future career opportunities as ability to speak other languages will distinguish your child from other applicants. Studies have also shown that bilingual/multilingual children earn on average 2% more per year that their single-language counterparts. That may not sound like a lot, but it adds up over your child's future working years. Long-Term Health Benefits: All those benefits regarding brain development also have long-term health benefits for your child. They help prevent or delay age-related cognitive decline in your child's later years. This would have a positive impact on any future Alzheimer's or dementia. Most Importantly... It's FUN!! (for parents too!): This is the most important reason!!! Slovenian School is fun!! Your child will make new friends within in their own cultural community. Our classes are not like it was 20-30 years ago. We try to make them fun with games. The best learning happens when children don't realize they're learning and that's what we try to do. There is of course the usual seatwork, but we also use games and singing to teach our students the Slovenian language and culture. If you don't believe me, just ask some of our kids! It's also fun for parents! You get 3.5 child-free hours to do whatever you want., .literally! Go grocery shopping (imagine how much faster that will go without the kids!), go to the gym, enjoy a coffee without squabbling siblings, or just revel in the sound of a quiet home. Now that I've told you about all the benefits, here are the disadvantages of your child learning their mother tongue: NONE! Yup, zero disadvantages! Your child may not want to go to school on Saturdays. They'll want to stay home and sleep-in, play video games, or pretty much anything else. But there's a reason that kids generally can't make decisions for themselves: they don't know what's in their best interest. It's the same reason why you make your kids eat their veggies even if they don't like them: because it's good for them. In a similar way, learning Slovenian is also good for them. They don't know it now, but they will understand when they're older and they will appreciate it. I know this from personal experience. I hated going to Sola but now I'm glad my mom kicked my butt into the car every Saturday morning as a child. She knew better than I did. You know better than your child does. Registration for Slovenian School will be on Saturday September 7, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The cost is $75.00 for 1 child, $140.00 for 2 children ($70.00 per child), and $195.00 for 3 children ($65.00 per child). The cost is for 1 full school year. We look forward to seeing everyone come back and especially look forward to meeting our new students. We accept any child from kindergarten to Grade 8, regardless of how much/little Slovenian they know. It may seem hard at first, but the long-term rewards are worth the effort. Sandy Ferletic VESTNIK 2019 | 375 GOSTOVANJE OKTETA CASTRUM iz Ajdovščine V nedeljo, 18. avgusta je pri nas gostoval Oktet Castrum. Za desetdnevno turo, ob 20. letnici zbora, so prišli skupaj z ženami. Ogledali so si kar precej stvari v Ontariju in Quebecku. Člani zbora so gotovo odnesli nepozabne vtise in doživetja. 376 | VESTNIK 2019 POROKA - MARRIAGE_ V soboto, 24. avgusta 2019, sta v naši cerkvi sklenila zakrament sv. zakona: ženin Kevin Da Silva, sin očeta Jose-ja in matere Mane, roj. Medeiros in nevesta, Stephanie Mujdrica, hči očeta Martina in matere Bernardine, roj. VESTNIK 2019 | 377 378 | VESTNIK 2019 VESTNIK 2019 | 379 Po 37 letih smo obnovili zunanji del vhodnih cerkvenih vrat. Dela sta dobro in kvalitetno opravila Jože Razpotnik in Zlatko Augustin. '-\ 21ST Sunday in Ordinary Time Response: Go into all the world and proclaim the good news! First Reading Isaiah 66:18-21 The Lord is going to gather people from all the nations to his holy mountain. Second Reading Hebrews 12:5-7.11-13 Sometimes life may be painful, but rather than be discouraged perhaps we may think of it as an opportunity to come nearer to God. Gospel Luke 13:22-30 Rather than speculate about others, Jesus encourages us to look into our hearts and to follow the way of salvation. "Will there be only a few saved?" Illustration Occasionally you hear of certain people committing offences but not being prosecuted. They park where parking is not allowed, wherever they like, whenever they like. They may exceed the speed limit, get stopped by the police and politely saluted. In 2017 in Germany, a driver killed a cyclist by opening the door of his vehicle directly into the cyclist's path without checking to see if the road was clear. He was not prosecuted. The people in question are diplomats, and they have diplomatic immunity. The human heart is an optimistic organ, and deep down many of us are disposed to think that we have a kind of diplomatic immunity as far as God is concerned, which somehow allows us to sin - even if this doesn't apply to other people. We often think we have a good excuse and maybe imagine God as a 380 | VESTNIK 2019 genial magistrate who will say, "Don't worry about it." We understand that rules are important: God gave us the Ten Commandments; but "the rules don't really apply to me", we tell ourselves - although we may be very quick to criticise and condemn others who break them. A priest was once caught speeding. Quite truthfully he explained that he was running late for a funeral he was conducting. Instead of accepting this as a good reason, the officer replied, "I think the dead gentleman will wait a few more minutes for you, sir." Gospel Teaching In today's Gospel Jesus was asked whether only a few would be saved, but he didn't give a straight answer to the question. He suggested that we should not speculate about others, but rather look to ourselves: "Try your best to enter by the narrow door, because, I tell you, many will try to enter and will not succeed." When reading the Gospels it is helpful to know the context in which the words were originally spoken. Here we have Jesus speaking to first-century Jews, people absolutely confident that being Jewish meant they were saved. One Jewish rabbi at the time of Jesus was so full of assurance that he wrote, "To have one's abode in Palestine is to be certain of eternal life." Another said, "No circumcised man will ever see hell." Against such complacency, Jesus warned that they might see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of heaven, but find themselves turned away. And in their place would come others from the east, west, north and south. This meant Gentiles, non-Jews, coming into heaven, which would have been a shock to the devout Jews, even though it had been prophesied by Isaiah in today's first reading, "I am coming to gather the nations of every language." Application Now, if we are to take on board for ourselves what Jesus was teaching to the Jewish people, we must not assume our membership of the Catholic Church is an automatic passport to heaven. For there are some Christians who believe they are saved, no matter how they live. Far from being harsh, Jesus is teaching about the wonderful kindness and mercy of God. "There's a wideness in God's mercy like the wideness of the sea." There are going to be innumerable people from east, west, north and south coming into the kingdom of heaven. We may think about members of our own families and friends; people of different faiths and traditions. While the Church has the obligation to evangelise everyone, those who with a sincere heart are moved by grace, following their conscience, despite not knowing the Gospel, may achieve eternal salvation. How, then, are we saved? We don't have to be saints to enter the kingdom of God. We are not to be alarmed as though there was a certain standard to be attained. We will get there by following Jesus, by walking in his footsteps, trying our best to walk with him, as he put it, "by the narrow door"; trusting him to forgive us when we fail, being penitent and persevering in our faith. What gets us to heaven is God's loving mercy, and this same mercy is what stops us taking our salvation for granted, as though it doesn't matter what we do or how we behave. Our Lady can be our model and example. She was on tiptoe, not the tiptoe of fear that asks, "Shall I be saved?" but the tiptoe of someone eager to love and to do God's will.
