Če kdo sliši moj glas in odpre vrata, bom stopil k njemu in večerjal z njim, on pa z menoj«. Živimo in umiramo v njem, v naročju njegove ljubezni. Oznanjevalec 2005/ - 3RD Sunday in OT Response: The Lord is my light and my salvation. First Reading Isaiah 8:23 - 9:3 Isaiah looks forward to a day when the people that have walked in darkness will have seen a great light. Second Reading 1 Corinthians 1:10-13. 17 Paul appeals for reconciliation between the divided groups in Corinth. Gospel Matthew 4:12-23 Jesus fulfils the prophecy of Isaiah and begins his public ministry by calling his first disciples to follow him in proclaiming the Good News of the kingdom. "Follow me and I will make you fishers of men." (JS^Ji&Ci^SO Illustration In the darkest places, the light shines brightest. These days people who want to look at the stars have to find a place far away from the pollution of city lights so that they can see the night sky more clearly. For those of us who live in towns and cities, only the brightest of the stars and planets are visible, and generally we are happy with this on account of the security that the city lights give us. Who knows what evils might be lurking in the shadows? Gospel Teaching The scriptures use the contrast between darkness and light to describe our relationship with God. "The people that walked in darkness" were the people of Israel, who, on account of their infidelity to God, found themselves in exile in Babylon, longing to return to their own land, their homes and their 30 I VESTNI K 2020 religious practices. They could see no end to their predicament. The future was dark for them until the prophet Isaiah started to shine the light of hope. Their exile did come to an end. They did return to their own land. Their Temple was rebuilt and religious practice was restored, but they were still in the dark. After the oppression of Babylon, they were still in the power of a succession of foreign invaders from Persia, Greece and Rome. By the time of Jesus, it was the Romans keeping the Jewish people as a subject nation, and they did so with the collaboration of the puppet king, Herod, and greedy, self-serving tax collectors. People still longed for real freedom, which they understood to be the light promised by Isaiah seven hundred years earlier. St Matthew, in his Gospel, describes the coming of Jesus in these same prophetic terms, "The people that lived in darkness has seen a great light." But the light that Jesus reveals is not a new political dispensation. The darkness is not merely the darkness of oppression. It is not just the people of Israel who have been subjected to a foreign power: it is the whole of humanity. Jesus is the light of the world that exposes the true darkness that is sin, which is preventing all human beings from fulfilling their true destiny as sons and daughters of a loving Father in the everlasting kingdom of heaven. The revolutionary project that Jesus starts is far from a political revolt. It involves a real change of heart and it starts with faith: faith in God, but, first of all, faith in ourselves. Do I really believe that God loves me and has called me into a relationship of love? This is the project of Jesus, to change the world by changing one person at a time, enabling every one to believe that they are beloved sons or daughters of the one Father, God in heaven. And so, in today's Gospel, we see Jesus at the beginning of his project to bring this new light, this new revelation, into the world. He calls the fishermen, Peter and Andrew, James and John, "Follow me and I will make you fishers of men." With this small group, which gradually increases to twelve, Jesus goes around proclaiming the Good News, teaching and healing. Their mission is to capture the hearts and minds of people, opening up to them the promise of eternal life. Application This is still the mission of the disciples of Jesus, to help all people to discover that their true destiny is to live in love with God and with each other. The challenge for us today is to recognise the real darkness. There are so many artificial lights that blind us to the reality of what God wants for us. Many of us believe that human success and fulfilment lie in the acquisition of wealth and knowledge. We think we know what we want and we make it our life's project to achieve it. However, our life project will be very different if we start from our self-awareness: who do I think I am? If I really believe that I am a beloved son or daughter of God, then I must start by asking, "What does God want me to be?" When Jesus is the light in my life, I am going to see myself and the world I live in very differently. So let us take up the invitation to follow Jesus. Let us ask for eyes that see as he sees, and for the courage to respond to the needs of our world with his love and compassion. 32 I VESTNI K 2020 World Day for Consecrated Life - some ReFLECTIONS FOR pARENTS AND yOUNG pEOPLE The feast of the Presentation of the Lord marks the event when Joseph and Mary brought Jesus to the Temple so that Jesus might be "consecrated to the Lord." Saint Pope John Paul II highlighted this consecration when he established the World Day for Consecrated Life in 1997 to be observed on the feast of the Presentation. With Baptism, all Christians are consecrated to God, which means "to be made holy" or "to be dedicated to a sacred purpose." For those who God calls to the vocation of consecrated life, God's consecration is manifested in a particular way in their religious profession. In this sense, "the Presentation is an eloquent icon of the total offering of one's life" to God (Pope John Paul II). We see this in Jesus. He dedicated his whole being and his life to fulfill God's loving plan of salvation for all. We also see this in Simeon and Anna. Simeon lived his life "guided by the Holy Spirit." Furthermore, for him, meeting the Lord was the sole desire and fulfillment of his life. Anna dedicated her life to worship, fasting, and prayer. This way of life helped her to recognize Jesus and point him out to others as the Redeemer. As the Church celebrates this World Day for Consecrated Life, please pray for us religious, to be more faithful and generous in our response to God's consecration - to be holy. Please encourage young people to consider this vocation, and pray for those who God calls to it. May they listen and be open to God's invitation to consecrate their lives to God, guided by the Holy Spirit, to continue the mission of the Savior for the sake of the world. As we celebrate this day, we also recognize and thank the Blessed Mother and St. Joseph who dedicated their lives to God, collaborated with the Holy Spirit, to bring God's Son into the world. In living their vocations as parents, they consecrated their son Jesus to God, and assisted Jesus in his dedication of his life to God. In this way, today's celebration also highlights the important role that you, parents, have in your children's consecration of their lives to God. In most cases, it is you who are the first to tell your children about God, to teach your children to pray, to raise them in the faith, to get them involved in the life and ministries of the Church. You witness to them the importance of prayer by your own prayer. You model to them generosity, and compassion to others, particularly those who are in need. Like Joseph and Mary, please continue to guide and help your children in their saying yes to God. It is God alone, as Simeon witnessed with his life, who can fulfill all the longing of the hearts of your children. Fr. 34 I VESTNI K 2020 VESTNIK 2020 | 35 GRAND TOUR OF ARGENTINA, NOVEMBER 2020 PRESENTED by: JUAN KOČAR of ARSLONGA TOURS SLOVENIA SATURDAY FEBRUARY 1, 2020 at 10:00 AM DOM LIPA AUDITORIUM, 52 NEILSON AVENUE, ETOBICOKE Mr. Kočar is an Argentinian born Slovenian, currently living in Slovenia, and an expert in arranging tours of Argentina.
