The Republic of Slovenia considers human rights to be the fundamental principle of democracy and the rule of law. In light of this, we have consistently pledged to honor human rights, thereby pro-V|ding individuals and groups individuals with every Possible instrument to protect themselves against any oppressive measures by State authorities. Abiding by the standards of the United Nations and by the international conventions and in cooperation with the European institutions - particularly the Council °f Europe, its Commission and its Tribunal - we have introduced the highest standards °f human rights protection, constitutionality and legality >nto our legislation and legal Practice. Please allow me to address at this point the developments in certain areas of the former Yugoslavia which continue to cause great concern and are a threat to peace and security in Europe. In the past year, the world has witnessed unimaginable atrocities taking place in the name of the rights of a certain nation, and stemming from extreme nationalism. Flagrant violations of human rights on massive scale - particularly ethnic cleansing, attacks upon innocent civilians, abuse and torture in prison camps, and mass rape, which continue to take place in the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina - require immediate and concerted action, all the more since there is a real danger that the war and atrocities may intensify and spill over into neighboring areas. We welcome the decision taken by the Government of the United States of America to play a more active role in order to contribute to putting an end to the war. We also appreciate the recent American air-drops of humanitarian aid to unfortunate people living in the threatened area... The Republic of Slovenia, for its part, has already received and is continuing to support many war victims from the Republic of Croatia and the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. There are currently over 70,000 refugees, mostly women and children, on Slovenian territory. The refugee population in the Republic of Slovenia is approaching 5% of the total population of the country. We greatly appreciate the assistance for the refugees that has so far been given by governments and nongovernmental organizations... ... The international community still lacks institutional mechanisms in order to prevent mass violations of human rights. The period following the cold war has brought new dangers, and it has become obvious that the attained level of the respect for human rights may in many places deteriorate. The UN must therefore develop the ability to coordinate its activities in the area of human rights through the elaboration of preventive diplomacy, while in the period that follows the conflict the guarantee of human rights must become the first priority. ... Mr. Chairman, please allow me to close my statement by stressing that the Republic of Slovenia fully supports the activities of the Human Rights Commission, the strengthening of the UN Centre for Human Rights and the activities of the United Nations • Iz Clevelanda in okolice Pancake Breakfast A pancake breakfast, sponsored by St. Mary (Collin-wood) PTU will be served on Sunday, March 21 in the school cafeteria from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Donation for the pancake, sausage/bacon breakfast is $3.50 for adults, $2.00 for children 4-12, and free for children 3 and younger. Petrie spots wrong flag When Ernest Petrie, Slovenian ambassador to the United States, visited the Kennedy Center recently, he was surprised to see the flag of the former Yugoslavia still hanging in the Hall of Nations. “That flag is absolutely nobody’s flag anymore,” he said yesterday. “Imagine if my prime minister or foreign minister would want to go see a beautiful performance... then he would see the flag and say, ‘Haven’t you done anything to remove it?’ ” So we tracked down those responsible for the center’s flags. “I’m really not quite sure whether it is up there or not” admitted Susan Creger of the National Park Service. “The State Department contacts us and then we take it down... It’s probably on my list... It will be removed.” As for Petrie, he’ll celebrate, he says, if “one day we see the flag of Slovenia up there.” Kuhar The news came swiftly and without fanfare. It simply said, “Monsignor Louis B. Baznik, of St. Vitus Catholic Church, dies.” But the heading also didn’t reveal much about the person. For those of us in the various Slovenian American communities in the Greater Cleveland area an era had truly come to an end. Msgr. Baznik was indeed a friend to have, especially if you were an emigree forced to leave Slovenia during the darkest period in the history of Slovenia during the 1940s and 1950s. Born on Addison Road in Cleveland, Ohio Louis B. Baznik would leave his roots at St. Vitus parish to serve around the world as military chaplain in the U.S. Army in 1944. Educated at St. Vitus Elementary School, Cathedral Latin High School, Mount St. Joseph Secondary School, University of Dayton, St. Bede College, and St. Mary’s Seminary, this son of one of the pioneer families of St. Vitus parish left an everlasting mark for the parish even as it celebrates its 100th anniversary this year; and then some. But it was the time that he served as a military chaplain, particularly in the Italian Front, that Msgr. Baznik saw life for what it really was at its worst: Slovenian emigrees fleeing their native homeland. Imprisoned. Tortured. Killed. But not by invading armies, but by their fellow Slovenians. Life was cheap. And death was a viable and inexpensive option. But Msgr. Baznik confronted terror and horror and began a lifelong endeavor to help not only his native countrymen but others from his motherland. He knew it was easy to be tough, cold-hearted, and the winner when the odds were stacked against you — landless, empty-handed, and unfamiliar with a new language and country. His compassion for the Slovenian emigrees during and after World War II really knew no bounds. It was perhaps the inhuman experiences he encountered at the Italian Front that gave Msgr. Baznik the courage and compassion to assist and meet the needs of these Slovenians when they arrived in the Greater Cleveland area. During his pastorate at St. Vitus that spanned nearly two decades, the parish became invigorated not only by the building of a new convent and parish gymnasium-auditorium and remodeling of the parish school but also the renewed faith in people through new parish organizations and also providing spiritual guidance on a broader level to such national organizations as the American Slovenian Catholic Union (KSKJ). Simply put he gave encouragement and faith back at 93 HYUNDAI EXCEl'I 1 I 2 year/24,000 mile free scheduled ,1 maintenance «& 3/36,000 mile warranty. /II/ Rack and pinion steering, power front disc \J / / I brakes, maintenance free battery, halogen I headlights, dual remote control mirrors. ^ Per I interval wipers, center console, reclining V/I I IJW , . . ■ I front seats, full wheel cover. #1666. Violent Crime Increases, says FBI Seven U.S. cities recorded more than one fourth of all murders in the United States, the FBI said earlier this week in releasing its annual preliminary crime report. The cities were New York, Detroit, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Philadelphia and Washington. Six of the cities had more murders last year than in 1989. The exception was Detroit, which had 582 murders, 42 fewer than the year before. Overall, violent crime — murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault — jumped 10% in 1990. “The growth in violent crimes is larger than I would have thought,” said Alfred Blumstein, dean of the School of Urban and Public Affairs at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Criminologist, however, don’t consider the annual report a reliable indicator of crime trends because it covers only reported crime. A more accurate barometer, those experts say, is the Justice Department’s annual survey of crime victims, which shows the level of violent crime has been fairly stable in the last decade. Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr., D-Del., chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee said, “The president and Congress must pass tough measures to fight crime, ban killer assault guns and combat the epidemic of violence against women before the death toll grows even higher.” Bled Castle Crowning the lake on an outcrop of rock reaching 330 feet above the surface, Castle Bled in Slovenia stands like a splendid sentinel to a bygone era. The setting is stunning, like a glimpse back through time. Dating from the 10th century the castle is classically medieval with a severely steep approach, double courtyards and terra cotta tiled round tower roofs. From the cobbled courtyard one has a terrific view, one of the finest in Europe, including the charming island with its baroque little Church of Saint Mary in the Lake which dates from the early 17th century and is built on the remains of a settlement that flourished in the 11th century BC. In the Baroque section of the castle is a museum displaying the history of Bled from the very first settlements in the Bronze Age to the mid-19th century, with a particular emphasis on feudal times. Louis B. Baznik What could be more natural than for one of the late Monsignor Ponikvar’s own seminarians to become the third pastor at St. Vitus church in Cleveland. Monsignor Baznik is an American-born Slovene - on December 13, 1907 on Addison Road in Cleveland. His mother, Lucille Baznik, gave birth to him on her own birthday. His father, John Baznik was born in the village of Malo Mraševo, the parish of Sv. Križ pri Kostanjevici, Dolenjskem, Slovenija, one of nine more sons, on December 6, 1859. Monsignor’s paternal grandfather John and grandmother Maria had a farm and vineyard. John Baznik arrived in America in 1893 and was one °f the first founders of St. Vitus parish. He lived on Munich E. 62nd Street and worked at Johnston-Jennings Factory. Monsignor’s mother, Lucille Žnidaršič, was born in 1870 in the village of Dobre F°lje, Posta Videm. Monsignor’s maternal grandparents, Anton Žnidaršič and Maria Škulj also had a farm °n which they raised ten children. Lucille Žnidaršič came to America the same year as her husband, 1893. Monsignor’s Parents were marred in 1894 in the chapel at St. Peter’s Church on Superior Ave. They had nine children: John in 1896, Rose in 1897, Joseph in 1898, Charles in 1899, Angela in 1900, Alice in 1902, Louis (Msgr.) in 1907, Matthew in 1910, and Edward in 1915. Of the Baznik family, Charles, Matthew and Ed- ward are the surviving members. Monsignor’s father passed away on Aug. 15, 1925 at the age of 66 and his mother passed away on March 27, 1944 at the age of 74. Monsignor attended St. Vitus school for 8 years, Cathedral Latin in Cleveland, Dayton Preparatory School, Dayton University and St. Bede College in Peru, Illinois. He studied for the priesthood at St. Mary’s Seminary on Ansel Road in Cleveland. Monsignor was ordained on April 23, 1935 by the late Archbishop Joseph Schrembs and sang his first Mass on White Sunday, April 28, 1935 at St. Vitus. On May 31, 1935 he was assigned as Assistant to the late Msgr. John J. Oman at St. Lawrence’s Slovenian Parish. There he served until 1944 when he was appointed Military Chaplain in the United States Armed Forces in which he served five years, two of which were spent overseas on the Italian Front during those crucial years. While in Europe he was able to visit his parents’ birthplaces in Slovenia. He was also responsible for some conversions among the Army personnel while in Italy. When he returned to the U.S.A., he first became Chaplain of a military prison in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, then spent one year in Japan before being named Pastor of St. Vitus parish on April 9, 1952. As his First task, Monsignor procured new bells for the church. One was dedicated to the Holy Trinity, another to the Virgin Mary, another to St. Vitus, and one to St. 300,000 Winners A Day. . The largest bell weighs 2,200 lbs., the second 1,320 lbs., the third 880 lbs., and the fourth 640 lbs. They are electrically operated but on festive occasions may be rung manually by bell-ringers in the old Slovenian tradition. The results of Monsignor’s spiritual efforts was indicated by the rise in communicants from 16,000 in his first year as pastor to 200,000 in 1967. His continuous efforts in vocations helped to swell the callings to 22 priests, five religious brothers and 35 religious sisters. The first major accomplishment of Monsignor was for the construction of an auditorium-gymnasium. On Sept. 22, 1956, the shovel of soil was turned by the late Msgr. John J. Oman of St. Lawrence Parish. Construction was started at once and one year later on Sept. 22, 1957, the solemn opening was held. On the outside, the structure is built of the same pale yellow Falston Brick as the church. Inside there is room for 1,200 seats. This building incorporated all of the latest innovations of a first-class recreation center. Not only does it provide facilities for students’ athletic activities but it also provides for cultural undertakings of all kinds. In addition, a school cafeteria serves luncheon to the children daily. The second great achievement attributed to Monsignor was the building of the convent. Since 1913 the Sisters of Notre Dame had been teaching at St. Vitus School housed in an ordinary wooden structure. The new convent was completed in 1962 and provides modern living conveniences and a private chapel, altogether costing over $150,000. The blessing and laying of the cornerstone of the new convent was done by Monsignor Louis Baznik on November 10, 1963. A school library was installed in the old chapel-auditorium of the school. That building itself was renovated and modernized; it has been lauded as an excellent example of a Catholic educational facility. We had a World War II Honor Roll displayed in church of the 1,089 parishioners who entered the U.S. Armed Forces of which No Paper April 1 There will be no American Home newspaper printed on Thursday, April 1 — Lhe Domovina will resume its regular printing during the second week of April. 52 young men gave the supreme sacrifice to our country. Monsignor instituted a Saturday school for the Slovenian language in 1949. In 1963 he organized a Legion of Mary, Sr. Vincent De Paul Society, the Young Adult Club, introduced Cub Scouting, started the Ushers Club and affiliated the Altar Society with the People’s Eucharistic League and formed the Confraternity of Christian Mothers. In 1958 he was appointed a member of the Catholic School Board of the Cleveland Diocese by the late Archbishop Edward F. Hoban. For the second time in the history of this parish a singular honor was bestowed upon its pastor. On March 10, 1960 on the occasion of 25th Jubilee of his Ordination to the priesthood, the Rev. Louis B. Baznik was named by the late Pope John XXIII as a Domestic Prelate with the title of Rt. Rev. Msgr. and he was chosen as the American representative of the Collegium Slovenicum - a special institution for the training of Slovenian priests in Rome. His diligence in gathering funds for this worthy cause has provided very substantial sums for the institution. On May 1, 1960 at Monsignor’s Silver Jubilee Mass, Bishop A. Edward Pevec delivered the English homily. Since August 21, 1958, Monsignor has been the spiritual director of KSKJ (the American Slovenian Catholic Union), the oldest Slovenian Is Buying a Home Becoming the Impossible Dream? 7\ > fraternal organization in o America. He is also the Honorary President of the > ZSD, an organization of S Slovenian priests in the U.S. 5 and Canada. He was Chaplain c/> of the Catholic War Veterans at St. Vitus Post 1655. On the _ occasion of the Golden Jubilee O of the Catholic Order of ^ Foresters, Baraga Court No. < 1317, Monsignor received an 2: Apostolic Blessing on October 18, 1958 from His Holiness the <; late Pope Piux XII. On April 26, 1960 the Most n Rev. Bishop James W. Malone •L of Youngstown, Ohio pon- ^ tificted at the Silver Jubilee of Monsignor’s Ordination Class co of 1935. The occasion called ^ for the very festive, colorful nationality costumes with an inspiring procession. Monsignor and other clergy and parishioners were honored with a visit from the Most Rev. Joseph Pogačnik, Archbishop of Ljubljana, Slovenia, who celebrated a Pontifical Mass on Sept. 18, 1966. Monsignor’s sermons were very enlightening and always remembered. We can still hear his resonant voice praying the rosary beads leading the people up the hill at Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine in Euclid. On April 23, 1990 Monsignor was to observe his 55th year as a priest, at Borromeo but unfortunately was unable to, due to becoming hospitalized at St. Vincent Charity Hospital for a time, then transferred to the nursing home Sisters of St. Joseph of St. Mark on Char-don Rd. Lavrich, 68. dies Frank G. Lavrich (1953 photo) Geauga County Probate Judge Frank G. Lavrich, 68, was not the oldest probate judge in Ohio. But with 30 years on the bench, he was the longest sitting probate judge in the state. He was appointed probate judge in December 1962 and assumed the post in 1963. He was elected in 1966 and was reelected to four more six-year terms. Judge Lavrich, who had undergone two heart operations in the last eight years, had trouble breathing on Sunday morning and collapsed at his home in Chardon, Ohio. He was in full cardiac arrest by the time emergency medical technicians arrived, and died shortly after arriving at Geauga Hospital. Judge Lavrich, a Cleveland native, would have celebrated his 69th birthday next week. He graduated from Cathedral Latin School, then joined the Army for service during World War II. He was assigned to Special Services and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands. After the war, he enrolled at John Carroll University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in 1949. Then, he entered Cleveland Marshall School of Law. Like many of his peers, Judge Lavrich worked his way through law school. He was employed in the credit department of May Co. for a year before joining the production control department of Elwell Parker Electric Co. in 1950. In 1952 he received his law degree. He was a practicing attorney until his appointment to probate court. Judge Lavrich was past president of the Probate Association and the Ohio Juvenile Judges Association. He formerly was a National Juvenile Court Judges trustee and a board member of the Metzenbaum School in Chester Township. He also had served on the Welfare Board of Geauga County, the Geauga County Mental Health and Retardation Board and the board of the Geauga County Mental Health Clinic. He founded Judge Lavrich Youth Center, a group home for juveniles, in Chardon. Judge Lavrich had been an active member of St. Vitus Catholic Church while living in Cleveland. He participated with parish youth groups in performing Slovenian folk music and dances. He also acted as master of ceremonies for many church functions. He joined St. Mary Catholic Church after moving to Chardon 36 years ago. He volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America. Judge Lavrich served as president of the St. Vitus Holy Name youth until he entered the Armed Forces during World War II. He was also a member of the Dramatic Club at St. Vitus. Judge Lavrich began playing violin at age 2. He especially enjoyed providing the stringed accompaniment to his granddaughter’s piano playing. Janeza Drnovška: »Drnovšek, bil je naš up, Postal si obup«. Odgovornost za odobritev spornega zakona nosi vladna t.i. velika koa-hcija, torej LDS, SKD in ZL. O slovenski naselbini v San Franciscu SAN FRANCISCO, Kalif. Angela Gospodarič MALI OGLASI For Rent 4 rms, dn. Upoštevaje standarde ZN in mednarodne konvencije in v sodelovanju z evropskimi institucijami, posebno s Svetom Evrope, njegovo Komisijo in Sodiščem, smo uvedli v našo zakonodajo in pravno prakso najvišje standarde varstva človekovih pravic, ustavnost in zakonitost. Deklaracija zahteva ustrezno odgovornost držav v določanju in izvajanju politike zaščite manjšin in uresničevanja njihovih pravic. Zaradi motenj v faksu citiramo naslednji stavek v angleškem tekstu, ki ga tudi imamo: We also greatly appreciate the recent American air-drops of humanitarian aid to unfortunate people living in the threatened areas. Republika Slovenija je s svoje strani sprejela in podprla mnoge žrtve vojne v Republiki Hrvaški in v Republiki Bosni in Hercegovini. 7) bo iz Želetovega zavoda na E. 152 St. jutri, v petek, zj. ob 8.45, v cerkev Our Lady of Mt. Država naj izkaže potrebno priznanje in olajšave izseljencem, zdomcem in zamejcem. Posebej naj bo pozorna do tistih, ki so bili v preteklosti najbolj zapostavljeni. Slovenskim državljanom v tujini naj omogoči izpolnjevanje vseh državljanskih pravic, posebej volilne, in pravice do vrnitve nacionaliziranega premoženja. Box 232, New York, NY 10032, to do srede aprila 1993. Prof. Arnež bo aprila meseca prišel v Cleveland in bo gradivo spravil v Ljubljano. Njihove ugotovitve so podobne prej omenjenim. Brez evangeljske prenove bo Slovenija tonila v še globlje duhovne, moralne in socialne krize. Misijonska srečanja in pomenki 980. Posamezniki in župnije so prevzemali zato odgovornost. Vinko Lipovec in nato dr. Rudolph Susel, pod zagla-vjem ‘Misijonska srečanja in pomenki’. 980 tednov že izhajajo. Bog daj!« (3. feb. Then, before you knew it, he went and did it. Few practiced the ideal of selfless friendship and fra-ternalism as generously as Stanley Bradack did. And he did it not only at the American-Slovenian Club in Fairport Harbor, where he is being honored this year, posthumously, as the Fairport Club’s “Slovenian Man of the Year;” he was always ready to lend a helping hand to a friend or family in need and was just as zealous in contributing his time and talents to the “Monday Morning Crew” at St. Mary Church in Men-tor — the group of people which kept the buildings and grounds in good repair. Stan Bradack worked as a welder for Reliance Electric Co. for 43 years before ^tiring in 1977. But he was nmch more than a skilled tradesman. As a jack-of-all-trades, there was no task he Wouldn’t tackle and few he eouldn’t master. Testimony to his skill end ingenuity can be found j*11 many places. One is the Mentor home he lived in with his wife for many years. He built much of it. The sign which identifies the Third Street building in Fairport as the “Slovenian Club” is another. After the Club room was expanded and a new front put on, it was suggested a distinctive sign should be designed and put up. A raised-letter format was suggested. “We can do that,” Stan said confidently. He researched the type of wood that would be appropriate and hold up in the weather, cut out the letters, and designed a fastener that would have the individual letters projecting from the brick face. Then he installed it. “It looks as good today as the day he put it up,” said Tony Satej, president of the Slovenian Club, in announcing the unanimous choice of the Board to receive this year’s Man-of-the-Year honor. There are other examples. When it came to straightening the eight-foot fence that was pushed over by the snow plow, Stan designed a fulcrum-type device to permit the members to do it themselves, rather than to pay for replacing the fence. Not everything he contributed required ingenuity. Sometimes it was just muscle power and sweat — like coating the black-top driveway, or painting the balinca courts. Stan was also very active in the Grand River Valley Lodge of AMLA. When it came to designing and making some gaming devices used in fund-raising activities of Lodge 30, Stan said, “We can do that.” And he did. Stan’s wife, Rose, is still active in the church, in the Club, and in AMLA. She works the kitchen during the fish fries and is active in other activities at the Club. She has sat on the Board of Directors of the Club for several years. She is also an auditor in Lodge 30. They made a good team. Stan married Rose Dusa of Cleveland on June 24, 1939. Four years later, in 1943, the couple moved to Mentor. Having no children, they raised a nephew, Donald Dusa, who has since gone on to become an aeronautical engineer working for General Electric’s jet engine facility in Cincinnati. Don is married to Roseanne Blakemore of Cleveland and they have seven children and five granchildren. Stan was born in Cleveland on April 12, 1912. He attended East Clark Grade School and Collinwood High School. He passed away Jan. 24, 1987. (Continued from page 2) Margaret I. In the fall of every year, each Home is to choose its Honoree and record same with the Federation. For the following meeting, representatives are to hand in biographies of a nominee in mind to elect the Man and Woman of Greater Cleveland who has given years of time and effort to Home or community. All of these are invited with spouses to attend our annual Christmas party, at which time we acquaint ourselves and socialize. Dan Shimrock, photographer, takes photos for the necessary awards publicity in the American Home annual tabloid. The editors of each Home collect biographies, ads, feature photos, write arti- cles of interest and take charge of ticket sales. There are deadlines for each duty to facilitate a schedule for the newspaper editor and an accurate count of ticket sales for the caterer. Each year one Home hosts the Awards day, the third Sunday of March. Reps and officers spend all day the Saturday before at St. Clair Home in preparation for seating, staging and decorating. The past few years our goal has been to raise funds to assist these Homes which may be in financial duress. In August of 1992 we promoted our first picnic on the grounds of the KSKJ White Road farm. It was a success due to diligent sales of raffle tickets and a fairly good turnout. Congratulations to all Honorees TAX STRATEGY ASSOCIATES - CPAS, Inc. The economy was bad, but thanks to our faithful patrons, we struggled through. It is really too bad that all our stockholders don’t patronize our hall once in awhile. As 1992 got into full swing, we started off with our annual Spring Dance. This year we honored John Jackson as our “Man of the Year,” a most deserving person. If you need help with anything, he is there. Even when he has his bad days he is there checking up on everyone, making sure everything is going right. The Bob Kravas Orchestra played for this affair. Everyone had a good time. Also in April, we had our winter bowling banquet. We had 20 teams again. Mrs. Stanonik cooked for this affair. We still have our sports department. We had three dart teams. We backed a volleyball team and three bowling teams. We also received a trophy from our volleyball team. The House Committee was also busy again this year. It seems they never run out of work. “Ask Carl Shultz.” As summer approached, we started to make plans for our Homecoming Day. A lot of hard work goes into this affair. This year our hall musician was Fred Kuhar, a most deserving person. People from all over Cleveland come to honor him. The dance floor was crowded all evening. We had eight bands playing during the day and evening. As ususal, we have to thank Mrs. Stanonik and her great crew of hard workers. They can’t make enough krofe and struedel to meet the demand. There really is nothing like homemade goodies. Again all the ladies donate their time and hard work. We also have to thank Frank Koncilja. If it weren’t for him and his hard work, our Homecoming wouldn’t be such a success. I don’t know what we are going to do without him. We still have our 50/50 Split every other month. These too are a great success. So we urge you to support your hall by buying these tickets. We want to thank the Holmes Hall But-tonaires for the entertainment after the raffle is over. In November we started getting ready for our Thanksgiving Dance. This year we started off by having a jam session in the club room on Wednesday, and then another jam session on Friday. Both days the club room was packed. Closing time came and nobody was ready to go home yet. We had a lot of out-of-town guests there. They tell us how lucky we are to have such a nice Slovenian Home. A big, big, thank you goes out to the Pol-Kats who gave all their time and talent to make this jam the best ever. Our Thanksgiving Dinner-Dance was held on Friday. Again we honored all out-of-town guests. Walter Ostanek from Canada, and Roman Possedi from Chicago surprised us that night by dropping by. They even played a few songs for us. It was our 10th anniversary dance. The meal was enjoyed by everyone. As the year comes to a close, our club room is get- ting ready for its annual Christmas party. Everyone waits for this affair. Thanks to managers John and Alba Plutt for all the hard work that goes into this occasion. Free food and music for everyone’s enjoyment is part of the attraction. The Board of Directors of the Collinwood Slovenial Home want to thank all those who patronized our hall this past year. Even with the economy as bad as it is, we still were quite busy. As I said in the beginning of this article, we jus* wish that all you stockholders would come down and spend some time with us. “It’s your hall.” We will try and do even better in 1993. I’m sure that with everyone’s help v/e will. God bless you all. Mary Podlogar Jenny Tuma Earns Top Collinwood Honors Jennie Mary Tuma was born, and lived for many years, in the Collinwood area. She attended East Clark Elementary School and graduated from Collinwood High School. She is and has been a life long member of St. Mary’s Church. Her continued interest in her Slovenian heritage is due to her mother’s insistence she attend, at an early age, Slovenian school studies, belong to a children’s Slovenian choral group and attend, with her parents and family, many Slovenian cultural functions at the Collinwood Slovenian Home, Waterloo and St. Clair halls. Her parents, John and Mary Svetina, instilled church and family values in the formative years. Jennie worked at the John C. Virden Co. for several years and, at the outbreak of World War II had to seek employment elsewhere as the company’s position with war work was uncertain. She obtained an office position in the U.S. Savings Bond Department of the Federal Reserve Bank. While in the employ of the Bank, she worked at reissuing savings bonds. As the war had ended and the country was regaining normalcy, Jennie then became stenographer/secretary at American Coach & Body Co. where she met her future husband, Bob Tuma. They were married for 40 yers until his death in August of 1991. American Coach and Body was purchased by another company and closed its Cleveland office at which time Jennie sought employment at Clark Controller Co. She remained with the company for two years before deciding to become a full time homemaker to take care of her son, Robert. Her son Robert and wife Becky are the parents of four year old James Robert. Jennie has been a resident of Wickliffe for over 30 years. Her neighbor and good friend, is her brother Frank Sustae, his wife Helen and son Ron. A nephew Tom and family reside in Findlay, Ohio. Her brother Stan Svetina is deceased. Jennie is involved in many volunteer projects. Currently, she is a board member and recording secretary for the St. Joseph’s KSKJ Ladies’ Bowling League (for over 40 years); treasure, women’s athletic director and scholarship chair for St. Joseph’s No. 169 KSKJ Lodge and is coach and leader of the Collinwood Youth League at Palisades Bowl in Euclid. She also writes a bi-monthly articles on the bowling results of the KSKJ Ladies’ League for the lodge paper “Glasilo.” She was present- Jennie M. They started by completely renovating and enlarging the kitchen in the downstairs hall. They added a dishwasher, purchased a convection oven and stainless steel tables, kitchen utensils, dishes and silverware. Then they proceeded to renovate the downstairs hall (dining room), refinishing the floor, ac-coustical tile on the ceiling, wallpaper and pictures on the walls, new lighting fixtures, air-conditioning, a service station and a portable bar were all paid for the Ladies Auxiliary. They also had new rest room facilities added in the lower hall. When work was completed in the downstairs hall, they tackled the upstairs ballroom. This renovation included painting and decorating, new draperies and new carpeting to give an esthetic look to our beautiful ballroom. We are proud of our Slovenian Workmen’s Home and will continue to “help” make it the most beautiful “Home” in Cleveland. Betty Rotar, Member festivities at the “Home. Some of their accomplishments included the renovation of the “fish kitchen” which is located under the “pubic barroom,” sealing off the entrance to the downstairs barroom from the Main Barroom and converting the existing front-store area into the present day “Barroom” for the upstairs Ballroom, as well as renovating the rest rooms in the main hall area. The present day members of the Ladies Auxiliary who are being honored here today began their tenure on August 8, 1986. For several years, they continued serving Fish-Fries in the upstairs public barroom; then, recognizing the need for expansion and a family-type atmosphere, they began serving in the downstairs hall where every Friday you can get “the best Fish-Fry in Town.” None of these women are paid any wages. All of the monies collected for the Fish-Fries are used to help finance improvements in the hall. Some of the improvements you see today The DNITED SLOVENIAN SOCIETY chartered May 27 1971 in the State of Ohio, declared its purpose to be: Promotion of Slovenian cultural activities, promotion of understanding among American-Slovenians and other people, encouragement of cultural exchanges between the United States of America and the Republic of Slovenia and, to provide educational events and to perform charitable works for the good of the Slovenian and the Ethnic communities in the United States. - USS affiliates are representatives from societies with Slovenian interests. 1993-1994 Officers President..............Linda Cimperman President Elect.......John S. Linda Mat0 r Auditors: Agnes Pace, Joe Krauser, Frank Pret*1 Hope to see you at our picnic JULY 18, 1993 at SNPJ Farm Antonia Simčič is Fed Woman of the Year Antonia (affectionately known as Tončka) Simcic was born on Jan. 17,1902, in the small village of Velika Ubeljsko pri Postonji, Slovenia. She was one of six children of the Ipavec family. As a child and young adult, Tončka attended the village schools where she studied the Slovenian language, its literature and history as well as music, mathematics and the required study of the German language. Living in close Proximity to the Italian border, Tončka also absorbed, through necessity and exposure, the Italian tongue, thus adding the fluent use °f a third language to her youthful accomplishments. In the aftermath of World War I, with the attendant stress of upheaval and economic slump throughout Europe, Tončka and her sister Anna (Zagar) migrat-ed to America in 1921 in search of employment and a better life. Here they were reunited with their father, who had earlier migrated and was at the time employed in the coal mining area of Western Pennsylvania. After a short stay there, the Ipavecs moved on to Cleveland, Ohio, lured by better employment opportunities and the attraction of concentrated and flourishing Slovene cultural organizations in this area. Toncka’s vivacious personality, her knowledge of several languages, her ability to adapt to change were favorable assets in quickly finding employment as refail clerk, and was soon ad- vanced to bookkeeper at the Reiman-Gross Department store then located at St. Clair and E. 34th Street. Now settled as a father-daughter family, and with job security intact, Toncka’s desire to take an active part in the Slovene cultural scene were fulfilled when in 1922 she joined the Slovenian Singing Society Zarja. Her natural fine soprano voice, her love of music, her awareness and pride in heritage was quickly recognized by Director John Ivanush and immediately put to use, pairing her lyric soprano with contralto Mary Ivanush — a pair that from then on became the top duet singing attraction at concepts, operas, banquets and many other Slovene functions. When Singing Society Glasbena Matica was organized, Tončka became a member and continued to sing lead roles. Marriage to John Simcic did not deter Toncka’s cultural activities, for in 1924, she added to her accomplishments the teaching of elementary Slovenian to the up and coming generation of American-born Slovenes in Cleveland — a teacher much loved and still fondly remembered by long-ago pupils. Toncka’s love of the arts involved her in the Slovene Drama Club Ivan Cankar, in which she served some years as stage director and additional years as president of the organization. Often called to fill certain roles, Tončka contributed her acting talents and her beautiful Slovene in many Cankar stage presentations on the auditorium stage at the St. Clair Slovenian Home. Except for brief changes of residency to Chicago and Miami, Tončka spent the greater part of her years in Cleveland. She has been active in SNPJ lodges, as a member of the Napredneje Slovenke, the WWII SANS organization, and the Progressive Slovene Women Circle No. 2 (the 22nd member of Circle No. 2 to be recognized as Woman of the Year). She has been active raising funds for the Slovene Home for the Aged and is still actively contributing her voice singing the familiar Slovene songs to appreciative residents of the Home. With the passing of the years, Tončka gradually retired from full participation in Slovene activities, but her vast experience, talents and proficiency in the Slovene language were not destined to lay dormant. She was recruited to write her newspaper critiques, reports and comments on the many cultural and social events taking place in the Slovene community. By nature retiring and modest, shying away from pointed praise, our hope is that Tončka will recognize that her “giving,” her writings are in some measure a history — a sustaining evidence that in our corner of the world, we Slovenes have left and will leave our mark of untiring efforts for those things which we ardently hold dear. We salute you, Tončka! Stanley G. Ziherl was born in Chicago, Illinois to Anton Ziherl and Mary Godesa Ziherl. He moved to Cleveland in 1942 with his parents and brother, Anthony Jr. He graduated from East Technical High School in 1946 and served the next three years as a radio operator in the United States Air Force. He married Mary Rukavina of Kapuskasing, Ontario in 1955. They have two children, Stanley Jr. and Susan. Stanley Jr. resides in Valparaiso, Indiana with his wife Mary Ellen, while Susan resides in Parma Heights with her husband, Mark Payne. He worked for many years at the Z & W Manufacturing Corporation and ended his industrial career with Parker Hannifin Corporation in 1968 to practice law, having received his law degree at Cleveland Marshall Law School in 1961. His father passed away in 1962 and his brother passed away in 1984. His mother, now Mary Champa, resides in Euclid, and her husband Andrew Champa, who enrolled Stanley and his family in A.M.L.A. Lodge No. 9, currently resides in the Slovenian Home for the Aged. Stanley was elected to the Audit Committee of A.M.L.A. in 1974. In 1978 he was elected to the position of 1st Vice President, and in February of 1979 he succeeded John Sušnik as President of A.M.L.A. He continues to serve A.M.L.A. as its first full time President, and his goal is to perpetuate that fraternal society's glorious past and prepare it to survive the challenges of the next century. His parents, Joseph Hrovat and Mary Zupančič, immigrated from Yugoslavia. As the first couple to be married in St. Lawrence Church, their ceremony had to take place in the basement because the main church had yet to be built. They remained St. Lawrence parishioners.even after moving to St. Catherine and E. 89th Street. Frank is the second of their six children who include Joseph, Martin (deceased), Louis, John and Sister Mary, a Dominican nun. The family spoke Slovenian at home, so when Frank entered the first grade at St. Lawrence School, he could not speak English. Fortunately, his teacher could speak Slovenian to overcome the language barrier. Frank became a member of the singing group Cerecki, under the direction of Ivan Zorman. He attended Holy Name High School and the Cleveland Trade School where he studied body and fender repair. When he was 18 he joined the U.S. Navy, attending schools in the Philadelphia Navy Yard and Annapolis, Md., and taking classes to receive his hlgh school diploma. He served 3!/2 years, participating in the Berlin Air Lift and the Korean War and serving on the aircraft carriers U.S.S. Sicily and U.S.S. Princeton. . When a jet plane crashed into the Princeton, Frank received serious injuries ''[hich led to a medical dis-charge in 1951. Frank married Clara Uubnicka in 1952. Their hve children have all graduated from Maple Heights High School. Claire Stratton holds bachelor’s and Piaster’s degrees from Kent State University and lives With her husband Jim in Solon where she teaches at Hio Roxbury Elementary School. Their son Frank Horvat graduated from the United Electronic Institute Pud is a quality manager tor Tech-Mar. He resides in Aurora with wife Jeannine und children Jennifer and Frank. Lorraine Hrovat lives in Hiram and works as an administrative assistant with CAM Transportation, a U’m which develops computer programs for the rucking industry. . Rebecca Turkovich lives ju North Royalton with her husband Michael, and m°rks as a traffic coordina-0r for Clark-Reliance, a di-yision of Figgie international. Ann Marie Hrovat holds p bachelor’s degree from Bowling Green State University and lives in Michigan, where she is the senior account executive for Q.K. Bently Corp., an employee benefits firm. The family moved from their first home on Union to Maple Heights in 1955, when they became parishioners at St. Monica’s. Frank was employed at Warner and Swasey and at the Ford Stamping Plant. In 1959 he was sworn in as a firpfiehtpr for the city of Maple Heights. Over the years he attended various schools for firefighting and emergency medical training. He served as Fire Inspector and received promotions to Lieutenant and Captain. For a time he also was a bus driver for the Maple Heights Transit System. Pestotnik (216)461-4398 Jennie Fatur has great love for Slovene culture B7 The Slovenian Society Home in Euclid, Ohio has selected Jennie Fatur and Frank Kokal as this year’s nominees for Slovenian Man and Woman of the Year. This significant honor is a source of great pride to Jennie Fatur whose love of Slovenian culture and song and whose life-long com-nnitment to the preserva-h°n of a healthy and vital Slovenian community are W6ll known. Jennie was born in Cheat Bridge W. Virginia in 1914, |ne first child of Jacob, a lumberjack, and Ivana erusek who ran a boarding house. Two years later a s°n Tony was born to the ^ouple and shortly after 'ms the Perusek’s received ^0rd from Slovenia that Jacob’s brother was miss-ln9 in the First World War and there was no one to take care of the family property. So in 1920 the family moved back to Yugoslavia to the village of Podcerkev in Loška Dolina in the Notranjska area of Slovenia. Another sister, Francka, and brother, Ivan, were born in Slovenia and still live in the village of Podcerkev with their families. While in Loška Dolina Jennie completed her public school education and her love of singing and music became apparent with her participation in many school plays and concerts. Following school she joined a mixed chorus in the village of Stari Trg. Their musical director was also an organist for the Catholic church in Stari Trg and Jennie often performed solos Jennie Fatur with the church choir. (As an item of interest, when Jennie returned to Yugoslavia for a visit in 1956 she was asked by her old musical director to be the guest lead in the chorus’ performance of the operetta “Rokovnjači” which she did for two performances.) During these years, life was hard in Yugoslavia and Jennie worked at any job which was available. However, in 1937 it became increasingly difficult to earn a living and the family felt things might be better if she returned to America to see if there were more opportunites. So a letter was written to an aunt who resided in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and Jennie again returned to America. However economic conditions in Johnstown in 1937 were not much better and her aunt contacted other relatives in the Cleveland, Ohio area where it was felt there might be more opportunities and where there was a much larger Slovenian population. It was agreed that Jennie try her luck in Cleveland and if nothing turned up she would return to Johnstown. Things improved for Jennie almost immediately in Cleveland. An advertisement was placed in a Cleveland Slovenian newspaper and within one week she had secured a job in a restaurant/tavern on St. Clair Avenue. She then immediately enrolled in a WPA night school to learn English and completed a two-year course while working 70 hours a week for $8 a week and room and Frank Kokal loves Slovenian singing ^rar|k Kokal was born ctober io, 1917 in Exp. Petrie, Jr. Many events occurred during 1992 on the national level and Slovenian community level, the most important was the recognition we all wanted for our homeland, “Slovenia.” The many telephone calls to the White House and to our Congressional leaders, our persistence and unity prevailed until that final announcement came from the President. Our homeland was finally recognized by the United States and Jennie (Continued from page 7) Yugoslavia Edvard Kardelj at the dedication of the Joseph L. Culkar Recreation Building at Enon Valley, and have been interviewed on several radio and television programs, including an interview from Iszeljenska Matica in Ljubljana for Slovenian TV. In 1952 Zarja moved from St. Clair to the Slovenian Society Home in Euclid, Ohio, where it was to become one of the many cultural groups centered there which make up a vibrant and vital Slovenian community. Jennie’s life has been filled with activities relating to her love for things Slovenian. As a member of Zarja she has served as President for eight years and Vice-President for nine years. She’s served on various committees, appeared in many operettas and performed with a host of singing partners. In addition to her longstanding association with Singing Society Zarja, Jennie has been a member of AM LA Fraternal Lodge 2 since 1937, a 30-year member of Slovenian Progressive Women Circle 2, and she and her husband Frank are active members of the Euclid Pensioners at the Euclid Slovenian Society Home where Jennie served as Recording Secretary for the Pensioners for nine years. She is also a shareholder of the Slovenian Society Home, a member of the Clubroom and a Zarja representative, along with Frank Kokal, at the Home’s yearly meetings. She has also participated in three balina tournamen-ts sponsored by the Home; two with the USS Team and once with the Pensioners’ Team. In addition, Jennie is a charter member of the United Slovenian Society and worked for a 9-year period maintaining their archives. Jennie’s knowledge and use of both the Slovenian and English languages proved to be a boon for the USS when they hosted (Continued on page 12) became part of the European community. Also, we had the privilege to host a reception at our Home for the Mayor of Ljubljana, Slovenia, Zupan Stergar, who was greeted by our Board of Directors and the Mayor of Euclid, Ohio, David Lynch and a number of Councilmen. Mayor Stergar presented us with a book on Slovenia and was delighted to see a street named after the capital of Slovenia, “Ljubljana Drive.” We had a number of other annual activities during the 1992 season, plus participation in the Federation of Slovenian National Homes picnic at St. Joseph’s Park on White Road, with our representatives: Rosemary Toth, Karen Alich and son Chip and Joseph F. Petrie, Jr. taking command of the kitchen. It was a wonderful success and we commend the Federation for its efforts. 1992 was a difficult year for us and I am sure for everyone, since the overall economy had been on a downturn. Financially we managed. If it wasn’t for the many hours of donated time handling the many events, projects, repairs and restructuring in the various methods of business issues, we may never have survived. Those golden days are gone; now we must tighten our belts and work smarter and make additional sacrifices, no Congratulations To All Honorees! Our best regards and God bless to all for a better year and the best of health. H vala Lepa! Frank Kokal Loves to Sing (Continued from page 7) have become another popular duet which is still entertaining audiences today. His favorite songs that he has sung over the years are Na Mostu, Vrh Planin, Bele Roze iz Aten and the Slak songs Kadar pa mim hisce grem, and Pod moim okencem. Frank’s talents have also led him to SNPJ Farm where he participates in the fall Grape Festival, has helped with the MPZ circuses and has built the Kozolec which stood for many years next to the pavilion. He was on the original Board of Trustees for the Slovene Home forthe Aged and has been a happy participant of the monthly birthday sing-a-longs for 15 years. Frank has been a member of SNPJ since he returned to America in 1935 and is now a member of Lodge 126. His most fulfilling relationship, however, began in 1943 when he married Ann Rozinka and together they have been an important part of the Slovenian community both in song and volunteering. In 1948, their daughter Tanya was born and soon after, another Slovenian singing society was joined - Mladinski Pevski Zbor. Frank was an active volunteer father for all the many activities that MPZ was involved in. Frank also shared his love of singing with the parish of St. Christine’s as a member of the choir for 12 years. He was the soloist for many of the Slovenian hymns. This year, Frank and Ann are looking forward to celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary. Their family includes their daughter and son-in-law Gordon and Tanya Kimberlyp and their children Elisa 18, Gordon 15, and Adam 9. Frank feels that his greatest contnbution to the Slovenian community is his efforts to perpetuate the songs and beauty Slovenia here in Cleveland and in the many cities that Zarja has appeared. They have appeared in Pennsylvania, Chicago-Waukegan, Detroit and four times in Slovenia. There he was proud to show the young Slovenians what the “Americanci” could do in Slovenian. Frank’s wish is to share his love of singing and to lovingly present the beautiful songs of Slovenia to the wonderful aP' predat Ive audiences-either as a soloist, in due -or in chorus. While at St. Lawrence School, Tony was an Altar Boy, Boy Scout and played CYO Basketball. Tony enjoyed riding the school bus to and from school, especially when his Grandpa Pelko would ride the school bus. Then there was always candy from Martinsek’s or a trip to the Nash at lunchtime for some pop and chips. After graduating from St. Lawrence, Tony attended Holy Name High School. While at Holy Name, Tony played football and baseball. During high school, Tony worked after school at Valley Mold as a Mail Carrier. In his senior year, he started to work at United Parcel Service on the belt lines. Tony gradu- ated from Holy Name in 1971. He attended Cleveland State University in the fall of 1971 through 1973. In 1973, Tony started to work full-time for United Parcel Service. He worked as a dri’ve trheljvering packages to the customers of UPS. Tony still works for UPS and was promoted to a Supervisor in March of 1989, and just recently he was promoted to a Supervisor of Industrial Engineering covering Time Study Control. In 1971, Tony met Janice Kaminski at a party of one of his friends. 1974 was a happy and sad year for Tony. Tony and Janice were married on Aug. 17, 1974, at St. John Nepomu-cene Church. This was a great day for the Mannion’s and Kaminski’s. Then on Sept. 8, 1974, Tony’s dad Willie passed away. From joy to sadness in such a short time. Tony and Janice have two children, Michael 11 and Leah 10. Tony is active in his church, St. Mary’s in Berea. He is in the Dad’s Club and the Athletic Group. Tony’s children play CYO sports at St. Mary’s, so many weekends of Tony’s are spent manning the concession stands at the various games. Before be- longing to St. Mary’s, Tony belonged to St. Peter the Apostle Parish. He was very active in the Men’s Club, being very involved in Fund Raiser Projects. One of the Fund Raisers he has brought to the Nash, A NITE AT THE RACES. This is a very good fund raiser, very profitable and not too much work. Tony is a member of A.M.L.A. Bled No. 20. K.S.K.J. No. 63 and S.N.P.J. No. 173. While Tony was growing up, he was always willing to help his mother by working at all the A.M.L.A. (SDZ) Juvenile Christmas Parties, being the projectionist, clown or whatever was asked of him. He was a checkroom attendant at the Nash, helped John Grahek and his brother Jim to clean the halls at the Nash. As Tony says, little did he know that he would ever be a Board of Director of the Slovenian National Home, The President of the Slovenian National Home and let along the SLOVENIAN MAN OF THE YEAR for the Nash. Tony joined the Board of Directors in 1988. He was the Vice President and than became the President in 1990. Tony worked very closely with Frank Mahnič, Sr. on the Lottery Raffle. 1992 Events Kept Newburgh Busy The year 1992 was a very busy year for the Slovenian National Home in Newburgh. The Bi-monthly raffles are well attended, music is gratis, help is gratis. In the kitchen you will always see Josephine Sever, Eleanor Grozdanik, Mae Kastelic Laura Berdyck, and Bunny Trisnar. Friendly and cheerful barmaids, board members, are Anna Mae Kostura and Emma Delach. Mimi Mahnič and Annie Kenik also help at these affairs whenever needed. Decorating is usually a joint venture with board members and Bernice and Chester Novak and Hattie Fashinpaur. Eddie Škufca helps clean after the raf-flec, etc. Rosemary Pozarelli and Lloyd Delach, Ralph Godec do side boards. Mary Ann Sray and Olga Sray, Dorothy Cabot held. Alice Arko takes care of refreshment tickets. Tony Mannion oversees the raffles and takes care of the calling of the raffle. C ongratulations to Stanley Ziherl Our Very Best Wishes — from Ambassadors Lodge No. 62 AMLA Other people who help at the raffles are Lou Kusa, Al Stražar and Joe Fortuna. It takes many people to make these raffles successful and thank God for all of them. The musicians: enough cannot be said about them. We try to compensate by hiring the musicians when we have other Special Events. All of our doings in the Clubroom are also gratis. To the list above, you can always see Jeanie Fortuna, my right hand. We have promoters who sell our tickets for the many events; they are Nefka Kastelic, Mimi Mahnič, John Kužnik, Don Gorski, Florence Mirtel, Millie Sever, plus directors. A big thank you to our bartenders in the Clubroom: Katie Kawczyn-ski, Pat Mismas and Beanie Resnik. Our custodian Joe Kahoun is always busy doing something. We have a yearly Rummage Sale which is very profitable. Very time consuming, chaired by Rosemary Pozarelli and her very many, many helpers. An OUT AND UNDER RAFFLE is held yearly in conjunction with our Annual Shareholders Meeting. This is also a very good fundraiser. Much remodeling has been done throughout the building this past year. The upstairs meeting rooms were completely remodel- ed from ceiling to floor. One meeeting room, labor was donated by Lud Hrovat and Jim Micklich. New carpeting was put in the hallway, stairs and bandstand. This was from the proceeds of the Rummage Sale. The building has been painted by our custodian Joe Kahoun. The Bowling Alley was remodeled, carpeting on the wall, completely painted, new tables and chairs. Bowling Alley was the home of the recent KSKJ Regional Tournament held in October of 1992. Bowling Alleys are available for Moonlight Bowling, Birthday Parties, Family Bowling. Terry Jeffery is the Bowling Alley Manager, assisted by Joe Zak. Brian Kahoun helps whenever called upon. The Snack Bar is manned by Pat Hill assisted by Rosemary Pozarelli. Security is done by Robert Hill. The Slovenian National Home would really be at a loss if Alice Arko decided to quit. Alice is the official caretaker of the Nash. A big thank you to all of our customers, patrons, volunteers who have helped the Nash throughout the year for without them, the task would be harder than it is. The Slovenian National Home (Nash) is your Home Away From Home. Anna Mae Mannion This raffle is held three times a year. Tony now does the work of the raffle. Tony’s hobbies are bowling and playing golf. Tony had bowled for many years at the Slovenian East 80th Lanes. He was instrumental in bringing a Saturday morning UPS League to the alleys. This league bowled every Saturday Morning for five years. Tony along with his brothers have a team each year in the A.M.L.A. Bowling Tournament. Tony also bowls in the K.S.K.J. Tournaments. Any wonder why Tony was chosen by the Board of Directors as the 1993 NEWBURGH SLOVENIAN MAN OF THE YEAR. When young people put forth an effort in their ethnic heritage, it is something to behold and enjoy. To you. TONY, let me say that I as your mom and all yoWj brothers and sisters ar® very proud of you for all: your accomplishments. This is the first time in the history of the Federation that a woman was elected president and noted the next succession of officerships will be under female leadership, since the progression method of nomination and election has been in force for many years, allowing individuals to experience the various levels of responsibilities and the ability to become a seasoned officer, thus resulting within the Federation of Slovenian National Homes a more vibrant organization kept alive by constant changes in leadership, ideas and goals generated by all of the membership. The Federation was involved in organizational activities during 1992 consisting of the United Americans for Slovenia, one of the most ambitious ad hoc committees ever assembled in Cleveland. Our representatives were Charles Ipavec, Helen Konkoy and Joseph F. Petrie, Jr. Many hours of strategy meetings and a fund raiser were held to achieve the united goals of this committee. A special celebration was held at the Slovenian National Home on St. Clair Avenue on Friday evening, April 10, 1992 with Federation representative, Mr. Petrie in charge of refreshments. Also serving were representatives from the West Park Home: Mrs. Konkoy, Mr. Warmuth, Mr. Jaksic, Mr. Lach; Maple Heights. Slovenian Home; Mr. Hrovat, Mr. Champa; Slovenian Workmen’s Home: Mr. Frollo and the Slovenian Society Home of Collinwood: Mr. Femec, Mr. Lah, who had served over 700 jubilant Slovenians. We also purchased an ad in the special “Freedom Edition" sponsored by the American Home Publishing Company, for $150.00. The statement was composed by Mr. Ipavec on Federation stationery and was reproduced in the October 1, 1992 edition. Also, President Konkoy attended many weekly meetings representing the Federation at the “France Marolt Cleveland Committee,” another ad hoc committee sponsored by the Slovenian American Heritage Foundation, who were the original contact liaisons that continued the momentum of spirit generated by the U.A.S. and guided all participants in another excellent venture, this time on the cultural level, arranging two appearances of 42 performers of Slovenian folklore on September 4th, Frid9y at the spacious Euclid Senior High School auditorium and on September 5th at the Slovenska Pristava. The combined attendance was over two thousand. Two other members from the Federation, Mrs. Toth and Mr. Petrie were participants also, but represented other organizations in the same united effort. We held a successful “Family Day Picnic” at St. Joseph’s Park on White Road on Saturday, August 29, 1992. The following chairmen and co-chairmen were in charge of the following areas: John Jackson and Joseph F. Petrie, Jr., Picnic Committee; Helen Konkoy and Celleste Frollo, Publicity; Joseph F. Petrie, Jr., Kitchen; Helen Urbas, Sandwich Concession; Joseph Frollo and William Warmuth, Refreshments; Joseph Hrovatin and Edward Lah, Balina Tournament; Charles Femec and Jean Fabian, Raffle and Refreshment Tickets; and Rosemary Pazarelli and Emma Delach, Bake Sale. Music was by the Lenny Andexler Orchestra. Three hundred people attended who purchased raffle tickets for a color TV, a girl and boy mountain terrain bicycle and five bountiful baskets of cheer, topped off by a delicious dinner and a table overladden with delicious homemade pastries donated from the nine Slovenian Homes. It was another united effort by all. Due to changes of address and the need for a stable home base for the Federation’s activities, we were able to negotiate space at the Slovenian National Home on St. Clair Avenue in the old Diemer estate situated in the center rear of the Home, so our new stationary reads, Federation of Slovenian National Homes, Diemer Building, our office and committee meetings will be held there because of the excessibility to everyone. The space provided is courtesy of the St. Clair Home’s board of directors and we thank them. Many of our membership attended the Friday evening St. Nicholas Day Mass hosted at Borromeo Seminary and sponsored by the Slovenian American Heritage Foundation in cooperation with his Excellency the Most Reverend A. Edward Pevec, Bishop of the Northern Region. President Konkoy presented an offering on behalf of the Federation for the bishop’s food relief program during the holidays. At the close of every year we gather for our annual Christmas Party, this time the affair was hosted by President Konkoy’s Home, West Park, where we enjoyed a delicious holiday supper, toasted the season and the new inductees into the 1993 class of honorees of Slovenes of the Year. The following individuals were introduced that evening: Federation Woman of the Year: Antonia Simcic, Federation Man of the Year: Stanley G. Ziherl, West Park: Marge Persutti, East 80th/Newburgh: Anthony James Mannion, St. Clair: Stanley J. Frank: Recher Avenue: Jennie Fatur and Frank Kokal, Waterloo: the Ladies Auxiliary, Maple Hts.: Frank R. Hrovat, Lorain: Michael L. Tomazin, Fairport: Stanley Bradack, and Collinwood: Jennie Mary Tuma. A standing round of applause was given to all the honorees. Before we went our ways, the annual Christmas collection for the Slovene Home for the Aged began. This is done in lieu of a holiday gift exchange. Proceeds collected amounted to approximately $350.00 with a matching gift from the Federation of Slovenian National Homes. Every year for the past 13 years and including this 14th edition, the Federation has coordinated the talents of writing and salesmanship of advertising space for the Special Edition Tabloid, which updates the history of each Slovenian Home and Honoree of their choice. Many hours are exhausted in composition extolling the volunteer hours which have helped to save by now millions of dollars for our Slovenian Homes, plus the many organizations, individuals and the business community who support and believe in our institutions by purchasing the various size ads expressing best regards to all. We must not forget the team effort of the American Home staff who labor laying out colums of copy and ads to achieve a quality product for the Federation of Slovenian National Homes to be proud of. Please if you do not have a subscription to American Home, why not sign-up today and give your support to the best Slovenian weekly in town. Don’t forget to patronize our advertisers; they support us annually in this edition. We acknowledge the media for coverage of this important event, especially on the radio: Tony Petkovšek, Ed Bucar, with extensive newspaper coverage: AMLA “Our Voice,” KSKJ “Glasilo,” SNPJ “Prosveta,” and PSWA section, plus the local newspapers in the various communities of and including Cleveland. Before concluding, may we acknowledge the host Home of this 1993 banquet, the Slovenian Society Home on Recher Avenue in Euclid, Ohio. Let us pause for a moment and remember all of our dear members who have gone before us and who have left behind their individual marks of accomplishments which has sustained their Slovenian Home during their time on earth and have left us a legacy to nurture for future generations who will do the same through the example of sacrifice and belief in these institutions called Slovenian National Homes. God Bless them all. Another episode has concluded and yet another is being written for another day. Na svidenje! Frank Hrovat (Continued from page 5) ter 25 'A years of service. Not until his retirement was Frank able to participate fully in the Slovenian community. He sang with the Planina singing group until it disbanded on their 50th Anniversary, echoing a family tradition. His father Joseph had been a member of the Zvon Singing Society. Brother John with wife Dolores, and Frank’s wife Clara had also been in Planina. Although Clara is Slovak, she currently serves as recording secretary for the Slovenian Newburgh-Maple Heights Pensioners. Frank was elected to the Maple Heights Board of Directors in 1985 and currently holds the position of auditor. He has helped with the renovations being made at the home. He also enjoys working at the fund-raisers — setting up before, working during and cleaning up afterwards. Most of all he enjoys socializing with the people who attend.
