Nasproti ponižnosti in skromnosti stojita domišljavost in nadutost. To običajno traja celo življenje. - (prim. Oznanjevalec 2004) Why Should Your Child Learn Slovenian? Our lives are busy. Our children's lives seem to be even busier than our own. Parents spend several evenings a week at music lessons, dance class, soccer fields, baseball diamonds, hockey rinks, pools, and volleyball courts. They spend several weekends every month at games and tournaments, meets, or recitals. They do this without blinking an eye because there is a benefit to children learning instruments or playing sports. Yet, when someone suggests that a child attend a language class for a few hours on a Saturday morning, everyone is "too busy" or doesn't see the worth in doing so. You may wonder why should you wake up early on Saturday mornings to take your son or daughter to school when you could be sleeping-in instead? Several studies have been done looking at children who learn a second or third language in comparison with those who don't. These studies show that there are clear benefits to children learning their mother tongue. I'm going to tell you about six: Greater Connection to their Cultural Background and Heritage: Learning your mother tongue allows the speaker to have a closer tie to their own cultural and linguistic community. Language and culture go hand in hand; you cannot learn one without the other. This is particularly important in smaller communities like ours. The greater the tie to the community, the stronger the community grows, and the longer it 386 | VESTNIK 2019 lasts. Learning Slovenian allows our children to develop a connection to our small community and allows them to learn the value of their culture and heritage. It fosters a sense of belonging and teaches children the importance of cultural diversity to society as a whole. Our cultural uniqueness should be celebrated, not ignored. Better Brain Development: This is particularly true for young children. Learning additional languages plays a huge role in the development of the executive functioning of the brain: multi-tasking, concentration, and focus. Studies have shown that children who learn multiple languages are better able to complete multiple tasks at the same time, are better able to focus their attention, and are better able to problem solve when compared to children who speak a single language. Brain scans of children who speak multiple languages show more grey matter (the good stuff) in the regions of executive functions. Improved Academic Performance: Children who are bilingual or multilingual also perform better on school standardized tests. They have higher literacy rates and are more creative in their thinking. Greater creativity in thinking leads to better problem-solving skills as they are better able to see multiple viewpoints. The ability to see a problem from different sides is the cornerstone of problem-solving. Better Future Career and Earning Opportunities: The ability to speak languages other than English literally opens doors for your child in his or her future. It increases your child's future career opportunities as ability to speak other languages will distinguish your child from other applicants. Studies have also shown that bilingual/multilingual children earn on average 2% more per year that their single-language counterparts. That may not sound like a lot, but it adds up over your child's future working years. Long-Term Health Benefits: All those benefits regarding brain development also have long-term health benefits for your child. They help prevent or delay age-related cognitive decline in your child's later years. This would have a positive impact on any future Alzheimer's or dementia. Most Importantly... It's FUN!! For parents too! This is the most important reason!!! Slovenian School is fun!! Your child will make new friends within in their own cultural community. Our classes are not like it was 20-30 years ago. We try to make them fun with games. The best learning happens when children don't realize they're learning and that's what we try to do. There is of course the usual seatwork, but we also use games and singing to teach our students the Slovenian language and culture. If you don't believe me, just ask some of our kids! It's also fun for parents! You get 3.5 child-free hours to do whatever you want.. .literally! Go grocery shopping (imagine how much faster that will VESTNIK 2019 | 387 go without the kids!), go to the gym, enjoy a coffee without squabbling siblings, or just revel in the sound of a quiet home. Now that I've told you about all the benefits, here are the disadvantages of your child learning their mother tongue: NONE! Yup, zero disadvantages! Your child may not want to go to school on Saturdays. They'll want to stay home and sleep-in, play video games, or pretty much anything else. But there's a reason that kids generally can't make decisions for themselves: they don't know what's in their best interest. It's the same reason why you make your kids eat their veggies even if they don't like them: because it's good for them. In a similar way, learning Slovenian is also good for them. They don't know it now, but they will understand when they're older and they will appreciate it. I know this from personal experience. I hated going to Sola but now I'm glad my mom kicked my butt into the car every Saturday morning as a child. She knew better than I did. You know better than your child does. Registration for Slovenian School will be on Saturday September 7, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The cost is $75.00 for 1 child, $140.00 for 2 children ($70.00 per child), and $195.00 for 3 children ($65.00 per child). The cost is for 1 full school year. We look forward to seeing everyone come back and especially look forward to meeting our new students. We accept any child from kindergarten to Grade 8, regardless of how much/little Slovenian they know. It may seem hard at first, but the long-term rewards are worth the effort. Sandy Ferletic SLOVENIAN CULTURAL and SOCIAL CLUB "TRIGLAV" 60th ANNIVERSARY On Saturday Aug. 24th 2019, Slovenian Club Triglav in London, Ontario celebrated its 60th Anniversary. It was a well-attended, happy celebration held at the German-Canadian Club. Unfortunately the Club could not celebrate in its own Hall because it was sold a few months ago. That did not however dampen the spirits of the celebration. A number of dignitaries were at the event to wish the Club a "Happy Birthday". These included Tomaž Matjašec from the Slovenian Embassy in Ottawa, Marjan Kolarič, Canadian Slovenian Representative to the Government of Slovenia and Vera Margutsch, President of VSKO. Joseph Zadel, President of the Club, who was the MC also read Happy Birthday wishes from Heidy Novak, President of SCCN. The celebration started with a banquet of traditional European style meal prepared by the German-Canadian Club chefs. Needless to say no one went hungry. After the meal the representatives of the Embassy and VSKO congratulated the Club, delivered short speeches and presented the President with plaques wishing the Club well. Marjan Kolaric also extended his best wishes to the Club. The president than followed with his remarks, thanking everyone for their hard work, countless volunteer hours and dedication which made the past 60 years such a success. He spoke about how on a late November evening in 1959 three Slovenian war immigrants, Dr. Stane Bah, Florjan Juršič and Tone Kobal, got together and started to promote an 388 | VESTNIK 2019 idea, a vision of having a Slovenian Club in London to help new Slovenian immigrants adapt and prosper in their new homeland. It took less than 6 months for the Club to apply for and was granted "Letters Patent" by the Government of Ontario establishing the Slovenian Cultural and Social Club as a Not-for-Profit Corporation. In addition to the original three the constitution was signed by Frank Jemec, Karl Zajc and Vlado Stancic. Some of the first organized Club activities were summer picnics held at Kristian Peternel's farm just outside of London. On many occasions a hall was rented for a meeting or a dance where local bands would entertain by playing familiar polkas and waltzes. With a steady flow of new arrivals from Slovenia the need for a permanent gathering place become a pressing issue. In 1964 all of the members contributed to purchase a house at 499 Hamilton Road and converted it into the first Slovenia Hall in London. This place saw may gatherings, meetings and parties over the next 16 years. Because of increasing membership numbers and growing families the Hamilton Road Hall was getting starched to the limit. In 1979 - 1980 a new modern hall was built on 50 acre property just west of London. This property was bought in 1972 as a place for summer fun and recreation. Until the Hall was built the two bowling lanes were the main attraction on the property. In addition the younger crowd had a soccer field and baseball diamond. The new Hall was officially opened in June 1980 by Alma Trbizan, President at the time. It quickly became the centerpiece and the heart of the local Slovenia community. VESTNIK 2019 | 389 As the Slovenian community grew and families expanded the Hall was where the Slovenian culture blossomed. This community included Slovenians from London, St. Thomas, Sarnia and the surrounding rural area. All Club parties, dances and meeting were held here. Many members' children celebrated their weddings and anniversaries in this Hall. On a number of occasions bands from Slovenia were invited to perform, drawing members of the Club and locals in significant number to these events. On three occasions the Slovenian Hall was the venue for Slovenian Day celebrations for the wider Slovenian community of south-western Ontario and Niagara region. For 39 years this has been our pride and joy. In his address the President paid special tribute to Joe Razpotnik who was President of the Club for15 of the 60 years - quite an accomplishment. After the President's remarks seven couples were recognized for 60 years of dedicated selfless service to the Club. Vera Margutsch (VSKO) and Marjan Kolarič presented "Certificates of Appreciation" to Joe and Ančka Razpotnik, Lojze and Štefka Novak, Lojze and Rezka Rozman, Ervino and Norma Pizziga, August and Mariella Gerdevič, Janez and Angelca Kržič and Algi and Alma Trbižan. A short program of accordion performance by Club members Mario Rozman and Peter Kralj followed. They entertained the 125 plus crowd with four of their favorite tunes. Their performance was followed by Ansambel "Skrivnost" from Slovenia. The 4 beautiful, talented young ladies from Slovenia were the main event. They played well into the night and left no one disappointed. It was a fantastic, unforgettable birthday party. Poročilo pripravil: Jože Zadel 390 | VESTNIK 2019 60 letnica SIOTOKEGA KULTURNEGA in DDllABNEGA KLUBA TOOTT V soboto, 24. avgusta 2019, je Slovenski Klub Triglav v Londonu (Ontario, Kanada), praznoval 60. obletnico. Po obedu so predstavniki veleposlaništva in VSKO čestitali klubu, izrekli kratke govore in predsedniku kluba podelili plakete in zaželeli klubu vse dobro. Poleg prvih treh so ustavo podpisali še Frank Jemec, Karl Zajc in Vlado Stančič. Tu so potekale vse klubske zabave, plesi in srečanja. Vera Margutsch (VSKO) in Marjan Kolarič sta se zahvalila in podelila priznanje naslednjim članom: Jožetu in Ančki Razpotnik, Lojzetu in Štefki Novak, Lojzetu in Rezki Rozman, Ervinu in 392 | VESTNIK 2019 Normi Pizziga, Avgustu in Marielli Gerdevič, Janezu in Angelci Kržič ter Algi in Almi Trbižan. Igrale so dolgo v noč in nihče ni bil razočaran. MATI TEREZIJA Sv. Prepričana sem, da prosi zame in da imam v njem pri Jezusu zaščitnika.« CWL - KŽZ: Meeting Our first General Catholic Women's League Meeting after the summer time will take place immediately after 7:00 p.m. Mass on Wednesday, September 11th, 2019. All ladies are most welcome to attend! 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Response: In your goodness, O God, you provided for the needy. First Reading Ecclesiasticus 3:17-20. 28-29 Humility is the key to finding favour with God. Second Reading Hebrews 12:18-19. 22-24 In Christ we are connected to the heavenly Jerusalem, becoming citizens through his blood. Gospel Luke 14:1. 7-14 Jesus points out to the Pharisees that true humility is the way to be noticed and properly respected. "Repayment will be made to you when the virtuous rise again." Illustration It was in 1858, at the age of fourteen, that Bernadette Soubirous was collecting firewood near the grotto at Massabielle, not far from her home in Lourdes. It was here that she witnessed the first apparition of a beautiful lady. This lady, who would later reveal herself as "the Immaculate Conception", asked Bernadette to come and visit the grotto every day for fifteen days. Bernadette, at this time, did not know who the lady was, she just faithfully came back each day to meet her. The lady, whom we now know to be the Mother of God, gave Bernadette instructions to pass on to the local clergy about building a church over a healing spring that had been uncovered at the grotto. In spite of great incredulity and attempts to discredit her, Bernadette persisted in relaying those messages. Even though 396 | VESTNIK 2019 she faced great opposition and accusations of madness, Bernadette remained faithful to all she had seen and heard. The shrine at Lourdes is now visited by millions of pilgrims every year. Bernadette's family were poor. Following a failed business venture, the family found themselves living in a one-room dwelling that had previously been a prison, called "the dungeon". Bernadette was a sickly child, suffering from digestive and respiratory problems. She was uneducated. To all intents and purposes she had absolutely nothing going for her. However, she had been instilled with faith. Her incorrupt body now lies in a beautiful glass casket in Nevers, where people can wonder about what her eyes saw, and dwell on the example she gave. She is now receiving her reward in heaven, constantly in the presence of God and interceding for us. St Bernadette is a truly inspiring model of faith. The humble one has been exalted. Gospel Teaching Today Jesus tells a parable in order to get through to the Pharisees about the need for true humility. He has noticed their tendency to take the places of honour and sees this as symptomatic of their pride - their belief that they are more important than everyone else. The name "Pharisee" means "separated one", and they do see themselves as an elite group. The parable is painful to hear be- cause it speaks of the embarrassment that comes when we find our pride being pricked. How uncomfortable it would be to find ourselves being escorted from the higher to the lower seats at a banquet. Also, when Jesus speaks of inviting poor people to a meal, rather than family, he wants to make it clear that a focus on personal status must not get in the way of the things we do. It is all too easy to entertain others because, in the end, all we want to do is to seek to look good in their eyes. By doing this, we are really only entertaining ourselves. Jesus wants us to shift our focus away from ourselves. In this way we will be truly exalted in the eyes of God and others, just as we hear in today's first reading. Application We have all heard the saying that "pride comes before a fall". This is a biblical expression, with the book of Proverbs carrying this very warning. Perhaps we have allowed ourselves a wry smile when we have seen this truth played out in the lives of others. There is something satisfying in seeing someone who is all puffed up and haughty taken down a peg or two, we think. Pride can be very subtle, though. Sometimes we are not aware of the effect it is having in our lives. When we focus on the faults of others and not our own, pride may be at the root. When we are more interested in how other people perceive us than we are about how God views us with tender love, that could be pride too. When we are desperate for attention and respect and the adulation of others, that is surely pride. When we are presumptuous before God, rather than approaching God with fear and trembling, that has to be pride too. Jesus gives us a concrete parable about pride in today's Gospel but he surely wants us to go deeper, exploring the nuances of this in our lives. For, in rooting out pride from our hearts and growing in humility, we will be allowing God to be exalted in us and through us.
