SLOVENSKA ŽUPNIJA SV. GREGORIJA VELIKEGA | ST. GREGORY THE GREAT SLOVENIAN CHURCH 25/60 Številka - Number / Leto - Year 23.6. 2024 12. NEDELJA MED LETOM 12TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Fr. Drago Gačnik, SDB ŽUPNIK - PASTOR NASLOV - ADDRESS 125 Centennial Pkwy N. Hamilton, ON L8E 1H8 PHONE: 905-561-5971 CELL: 905-520-2014 E-MAIL gregory_sdb@ stgregoryhamilton.ca HALL RENTALS 905-561-5971, ext. ... To dejstvo povsem spremeni naš položaj. - (prim. Oznanjevalec 2012, št. 3) 274 | VESTNIK 2024 12TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Response: Give thanks to the Lord; his steadfast love endures forever. First Reading Job 38:1. 8-11 Creation is only a metaphor for God, a sign of something greater than we can know. Second Reading 2 Corinthians 5:14-7 We are a new creation, because God has given us in Christ a new kind of love. Gospel Mark 4:35-41 It is easy for Christ to have the wind and the sea obey him. The obedience of human beings is harder to obtain. “Master do you not care?” Illustration The founder of the Passionist Order, St Paul of the Cross, founded his first house on Monte Argentaro, from where he could see the sea flowing in and out of a lake, through underground channels. It seemed to inspire a recurrent image of God’s infinite love, which ebbs in and out of the finite suffering of the Son and indeed all the suffering of the world. Love is infinite, but this world will come to an end, with is joys and hopes, its anguish and pain. Christ chose fishermen as his first apostles because of their experience of the sea. Perhaps we remember the beginning of our life, immersed as it were, in a sea of amniotic fluid in our mother’s womb. Rivers also speak of something divine, which is why we must pour water over the head of the baptised. As Aquinas says, the difference between flowing water and Application stagnant water is that one is still in touch with its source, so flowing water is an image of the Holy Spirit. Gospel Teaching In the calming of the storm in the Gospel of St Mark, it is mentioned that there were other boats with either him or the boat. The Greek could mean either. This is worth remembering. The disciples say to Our Lord, “Does it not matter to you that we are perishing?” Whom did they mean by “we” here? Themselves or all the boats that were on the sea? Whichever they had in mind, by calming the sea, Christ protects everyone on the sea, rather than just ensuring that their boat made it to safety. We pray for safety for those we know and love. This is not unreasonable. Yet the world will always be a dangerous place. It is the safety of the whole world that we seek, yet that will only truly come; at the end of human history. Meanwhile we must trust in what will come, whether we incur evils or avoid evils, we go forward. We must make our way to the kingdom. We should be careful, we should seek what peace we can find, but we will only be truly at peace in this world if we accept that we are looking for a greater peace than surpasses our understanding (Philippians 4:7). For the Jews, the day began with the evening before the morning. This survives in the Church’s practice of vigil Masses counting for Sunday, even though we tend to think the day begins with the morning. The Gospel account begins, if I may use my own translation by saying, “And he said to them on that day, with the evening coming, let us go across to the other side.” It is not surprising that the translation simply says, “with evening coming”, but in fact this passage is saying that a new day has begun with the coming of the night. Normally the Jews would begin that night by resting, but there was one special night when they began a journey. That was the night they left Egypt. “The night when Yahweh kept vigil to bring them out of Egypt must be kept as a vigil in honour of Yahweh by all Israelites, for all generations.” (Exodus 12:42). There may be a reference to Exodus here, but the general truth of the Gospel passage is that sometimes there are journeys to be made in the life of Christians, as there were for Jews, which involve danger and uncertainty. We don’t all go on actual journeys, but many Christians have been forced into exile, and have often renewed the faith in our Western countries, where complacency has been our greatest enemy. If we are to make great changes in our life, or great sacrifices, we would do well to look at this Gospel passage. How often we say to God in our own words, something like the words of the disciples. “Don’t you care?” Of course God cares. Yet God’s answer to our prayers is rarely a simple answer. There is always something more, there is always another step to take or another corner to turn. It was a new day. The disciples were being taken to a new place. If they had stayed behind, they would have watched the storm from the safety of the shore but they would not have seen the power of Christ, a power for peace. We only experience the gift of courage when we feel frightened VESTNIK 2024 | 275 2024 SLOVENIAN CANADIAN SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION 2024 Slovenian Canadian Scholarship Foundation Awards Application Now Available. Sunday turned out to be a beautiful sunny day without the humidity and heat we have been dealing with this past week. Fr. Drago started us off with a Mass and we enjoyed the addition of Karina Stankovič singing with her mother, Silvia and accompanied by her brother, Luka, on guitar. A fair number of guests came for the picnic which featured a large variety of options as far as the food was concerned. Julie Doma and Rosemary Farkaš prepared roast chicken, pork schnitzel, čevapi, kranjska and even hot dogs for the kids - with some help from the men on the grill! After lunch, music was provided by our own, Branko Pouh, who kept the festive air with a variety of music to entertain everyone while they visited and talked with each other. Not ready to end the day, a few even decided to play some cards, lingering through the dinner hours. A big thank you to all the volunteers who help make this event happen! There are too many to name but appreciation goes out to all who helped plan and prep for the picnic beforehand, who covered ticket sales for entry/bar/food, the people who shopped and cooked up all the delicious food and, just as important, those who helped clean up. It was not possible without you. On behalf of the Bled Council, hvala!
