ISSN Number 0164-68X 50C American Slovene Congress Objects to Italy’s Objection December 5, 1994 The American Slovene Congress, an organization of Americans of Slovenian descent, notes with concern the change in policy adopted by the new Government of the Republic of Italy *n its relations with the Republic of Slovenia. One specific example is Italy’s recently expressed objection to Slovenia’s efforts to become an Associated Member State of the European Dnion, as happened at the October 31st and ovember 28th meetings of the Council of 'nisters of the European Union. Italy’s position is unreasonable as Slovenia ay a politically mature state which moved is tod; from a totalitarian system to an elected eniocratic government and a market-oriented ^onomy. Slovenia has an exemplary record of Aspect for human rights and has adopted laws ^bich fully protect its small Italian and Ungarian minorities and provide for their ^presentation in Parliament. Therefore, Italy’s assertion that Slovenia has not adequately resolv-^ the issue of the Italian minority is completely ®rroneous and can be easily refuted. On the con-rary, Italy has still not adopted a comprehensive ^gislation for the protection of the much larger 0vene minority in Italy, as European standards ^e,nand and as Italy is bound to enact in accor-? w>th agreements already signed and ratified. The American Slovene Congress also notes that Italy demands that Slovenia meet certain requirements even before the start of negotiations on Associate Membership, although the fulfillment of these requirements was not prerequisite for other states for admission to full membership in the European Union. The American Slovene Congress would further like to point out the exceptionally important position of Slovenia in the heart of Europe and the risk of destabilizing this European region as a result of the current activity of the Italian diplomacy. Each member of the European Union should recognize that the present pressures imposed on Slovenia are the result of the influence of the Neo-Fascist elements in Mr. Berlusconi’s Administration and should realize that this philosophy displayed by one of its members is damaging the prestige of all and that is the same philosophy which was in force in Rome some fifty years ago. The American Slovene Congress, therefore, calls upon the governments of the European Union to vigorously support the immediate granting of the mandate to the European Commission to begin negotiations with the Republic of Slovenia regarding its Associate Membership in the European Union. War Vets observe 45 years in raucous style by TONY GRDINA Post Historian St. Vitus Post 1655 of the Catholic War Veterans celebrated its 45 years of existence with a banquet on Saturday, November 19th in St. Vitus auditorium. The day began with about 20 post and two auxiliary members doing a terrific job decorating the auditorium in the short time they had for the task. Gene Drobnič did the center-pieces which were made up of miniature flags of the branches of the Armed Forces and life-saver candy wrapped in red, white, and blue ribbons which she says stood for the life-saving efforts of the former members of United States military. Chairman of the event, attended by 240 guests, was Raymond Jasko. At 5 p.m. there was a con-celebrated Polka Mass in St. Vitus church with music by the Orcades who also played for the dance following the banquet. Celebrant was Father Richard Evans, Post Chaplain. Concelebrants were Father Joseph Božnar, pastor of St. Vitus church, and Father Victor Tome. Homolist was Father Evans, wha during the course of the evening, sat in with the band playing some intricate polka numbers on his elegant accordion. After the delicious family-style dinner, prepared by Mrs. Vodopivec, a short program followed. Toastmaster for the evening was Post member Joseph S. Baškovič. The program began with the singing of the National Anthem, led by Robert A. Hopkins of Glasbena Matica. This was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by Post Commander, Steve Piorkowski.Invocation was by Father Joseph Božnar. A brief history of the post was presented by Joseph Baškovič. Last night yours truly flew into Nassau Airport from Miami, Florida. A fellow pensioner, who arrived in Nassau earlier in the day, picked me up in a rented car and took me to the Crystal Palace hotel. The two of us spent the next few hours playing slots at the hotel’s beachfront casino. Drinks were on the house and this frugal Slovenian knew it was a good deal. Before retiring for the night, I remembered that today was a special day for all Slovenians. “Sveti Miklavž” was due to arrive during the night. Would St.Nick find a vacationing Slovenian scribe so far from Ohio? Nah ! Much to my surprise, as I opened the door to my room to retrieve the morning paper, there was an old espadrille sitting next to it, overflowing with heavenly delights that only a Slovenian would appreciate. The aroma of Slovenian sausages, packaged in the non-descript Cimperman wrap, a slice of freshly baked “potica” from Nosan’s, a well stuffed rice sausage from Rady’s and a nicely prepared venison burger prepared by the Slovenian white hunter J.T. ESQ. I could not believe it! It was too good to be true. All these distinctly Slovenian goodies found their way io Nassau. But now we were looking forward to a long hot shower clean clothes, a hot meal with a glass of wine, and a cigarette. As the lines were about to be cast on, the Flotilla’s captain appeared on the bridge of the depot ship ordering us “to immediately sail for the inlet of “Morinje,” submerge and lie on the bottom of the sea until further notice. “Shock and disbelief” was the reaction of us ajl, but what hit us worse was the growing suspicion that we had been betrayed by those of whom we trusted — the high command. Was it a shock for them to see us returning from the “death sentence” voyage? We went out to sea to destroy the convoys sailing to and from Albania. They had informed the enemy of our exact location. Three enemy destroyers were sent out to blow us up. On the way to “Morinje” the direct order was disobeyed because we had lost confidence in our high command. The crew strongly resented lying uselessly on the bottom of the sea. It was decided to camouflage the submarine. As there was nothing suitable to use as camouflage at “Morinje” we moored at an old fisherman’s jetty in “Kosta-jnice,” a four house village situated half way between Morinje and “Risan.” As soon as the gangway was secured we were swamped with women and children begging for bread. They had been unable to buy anything since the war started. When the cook came up with a sack of old bread, a fight broke out amongst the women. It was not a very nice sight. Something must be wrong if this sort of thing is happening so early in the war. Mrs. Derling died Dec. 4 at her residence. Born Oct. 4, 1919 in Rodine, Slovenia, she was a resident of Madison. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, and St. Joseph Lodge No. 169 KSKJ in Cleveland. Mrs. Derling helped her husband, Victor manage the Slovenian Home on Holmes Avenue from 1961 to 1965. Survivors are her daughters, Maria (Josef) Lah of Cleveland and Antonia Rogers of Madison; five grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren; and numerous relatives in Slovenia. Her husband, Victor, died in 1985. Friends called at The Behm Funeral Home, 26 River St., Madison on Tuesday. The Rev. Luigi Miola of Immaculate Conception Church officiated at the services. Burial in North Madison Cemetery. The family suggests contributions to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 5786 Heisley Road, Mentor, OH 44060. In April the Slovenian National Home honored him by declaring April 9th as “A Salute To Eddie Kenik Day.” A huge throng attended the reception for him which was held in the Slovenian National Home Auditorium that evening. In November, the Polka Hall of Fame organization awarded him the Lifetime Achievement Award and also the Cultural/Heritage Award. In the last 40 years he has given much in talent, dedication, and hard work. A Slovenian by all standards. We, the St. Clair Pensioners, extend our congratulations to Eddie on the acclaimed tributes he so deservedly received. Yes both Eddie and Millie are members of our Pensioners Club. Our Slovenian Homes... Our Slovenian Homes are “Home” to many of our clubs, lodges and other organizations. These Homes saw the birth of many of these groups. They became their meeting place; a place for their social activities; weddings, public functions, etc. We owe them a debt of gratitude for the privilege of having these havens available for our needs. So let us remember to come to their aid when they are in need. Support their functions. MOČNIK We left Orlando, Fla. Wednesday morning at 8:30 a.m. We were an hour late in leaving because two people did not show. We had 50 people in the bus and our driver was a young lady from Columbia, South America. Her name was Monica and she spoke English perfectly. Our first stop was in Georgia for lunch. Before we got there, we said three Rosaries, saw two videos of Nancy Fowler of Conyers, Georgia, and other videos of different places our Blessed Mother has appeared. It started to rain, but we felt refreshed and uplifted. We arrived at Conyers, Georgia about 5 p.m. and unloaded our folding chairs in different spots on Nancy’s land for the next day. It was cold and wet and we did not spend too much time at the site. We then headed for a restaurant for supper. After an hour there, we headed for our motel. It was cold and rainy all the time, and our poor bus driver had trouble keeping the windows from fogging up. Our tour guide kept wiping the windows so the driver, Monica, could see. When we arrived at the motel, we picked our baggage and went to our rooms. We turned the heat on because we were cold. We were told that at 5:30 a.m., they would awaken us with a call on the telephone. Sure enough at 5:30 we were awakened and turned on the television to get the weather report. The report said it was going to be drizzly and very cold. We then got dressed and headed for the bus at 6 a.m. We were all on the bus except the tour guides. Unfortunately they were not awakened by a phone call, so our bus driver called their room. We finally left about 7 a.m. for the Cistercian Monastery for Mass. We arrived there and found the place jammed with buses and cars. We got off the bus and headed for the monastery. The front doors were closed, so we went to the basement. They had an altar set up, but it was packed. The monks say their Mass there. We then went upstairs and ended up at the Sanctuary where the Mass had just begun. As I noticed last April there were 45 monks in the place built for 400. Vocations are lacking and as I firmly believe, we all are missing the point of: Life is a life of giving, not a life of getting. We Catholics have resigned ourselves to living a materialistic life rather than a Christian life of faith, hope and charity. Our time is coming when we will be before Our Lord and Maker, giving an account of what we have done on earth. Are we ready to appear before Him? The Monastery was packed wall to wall. We stood the whole time and at the Most Sacred Moments of the Mass at the Consecration we all knelt in respect and adoration. At Communion, all received the body of Christ. It was an edifying experience. After the Mass, we all filed out in an orderly fashion. Before going on our way, we were told to board the bus at 9 a.m. After Mass we headed for their gift shop. Millie bought a few things and as we left, I met one of the Monks and asked for his blessings for all of my family and friends. This he graciously did. He told me that 25 years ago, he left the Marist order and joined the Cistercian’s. I told him I was a former Marianist. He then gave me the hug we all get or give to someone close. We then headed for breakfast to a McDonald’s. We noticed many buses parked there and had our doubts, but the McDonald’s was empty. So we had our breakfast and headed for the Apparition Site. We finally arrived at 11 a.m. and were told by our tour guides that we should get to our bus by 3 p.m. so that we would head back to Orlando. Long before the arrival of Europeans, the Aztecs of Central Mexico cultivated the plant and called 't Cuetlaxochitle. Because of ’ts brilliant color, the poinsettia was a symbol of purity to ihc Indians. It was highly prized by Kings Montezuma and Netza-- u?lc°yotl, but could not be grown in their capital, now Mexico City, because of the high altitude climate. The Aztecs also had practical uses for the plant. They made a reddish-purple dye out of the bracts and a medicine for fever from the plant’s latex. During the Seventeenth Century, a community of Franciscan priests settled near Taxco. When they found this bright red flower blooming naturally on the slopes during the Season of Advent (December), they used it to adorn the Nativity Celebration. This custom soon became a tradition throughout Mexico. Many stories from Mexico tell of the poinsettia’s enchantment. This one is a favorite: On a Christmas Eve long ago. But she was very poor and had no gift. As she walked sorrowfully to church with her Cousin Pedro, he tried to console her, “Pepita,” he said, “I am certain that even the most humble gift, given in love, will be acceptable in His eyes.” So Pepita gathered a bouquet of common weeds from the roadside and entered the church. As she approached the altar, her spirits lifted. She forgot the humbleness of her gift as she placed it tenderly at the foot of the Christ Child, and there was a miracle. Pepita’s ordinary weeds burst into brilliant red blooms. They were called Flores de Noche Buena, Flowers of the Holy Night. We call them poinset-tias. Joel Poinsett was a Southern plantation owner and botanist who was appointed to be the first United States Ambassador to Mexico (1825-1829). While visiting Taxco, he was impressed with this brilliant red flower he found blooming during December. He had some plants sent to his home in Greenville, South Carolina. They did well in his greenhouse and he distributed plants to his horticultural friends. The botanical name, Euphorbia pulcherrima, had already been given by a German taxonomist in 1833. The common name, poinsettia, however, has remained the accepted name in English-speaking countries. In 1902, Albert Ecke immigrated from Germany via Switzerland to Southern California. The Ecke family settled in Hollywood where they found the poinsettia blooming wild on the hillsides. Fascinated by the bright scarlet flowers, the Ecke family began to raise fields of poinsettias which they sold as fresh cut flowers for Christmas. Albert’s son, Paul Ecke Sr., establish stands along Sunset Boulevard, selling straight from the fields. Huge bunches of colorful poinsettias greeted the delighted eyes of hundreds who stopped to buy. An early Hollywood landmark, the vast fields of poinsettias attracted 7 dozens of tourist buses which would drive by for a sight that would long be remembered. In 1920, Paul Ecke Sr. developed the first poinsettia cultivar that could be successfully grown as an indoor potted plant and he hastened to introduce it to flower growers all across the country. The old Church of St. Rok (patron saint against contagious diseases), a popular pilgrimage site for residents of Ljubljana and its environs, built in 1646, its current baroque appearance from 1730 renovated in the last decades, became too small for its congregation. At the founding of the parish, there were 3,000 members, and now there are 23,000. In 1977, “pilgrimages” for a new church began. The winner of the competition was the plan of architect Marko Mušič, for whom this was the first encounter with planning and building a church. After the location was established (1981) and a construction permit granted (1982), preparatory construction work started in the spring of 1983. The foundation stone was blessed on June 5, 1983, and a good three years later, on September 15, 1986, Archbishop Alojzij Šuštar consecrated the new church of Christ’s Incarnation, the first with this name in Slovenia. The new church is rooted deeply in its surroundings and times. Growing from the ground, the building is open toward the baroque St. Rok church and its bell-tower, which still dominates the union of old and new; it is open toward nature, which is represented by a luxuriant promenade planted with trees between the old church and the cemetery; it is open toward toward the buildings and apartment houses which represent the life and everyday hustle and bustle of mankind; it is open toward the tradition from which it grows and toward the new, which it reflects and for which it was erected. Above all, it wants to be open to man who seeks, fights and falls, approaches and flees, always carrying in himself a spark of the eternal and absolute. This multisided openness is symbolized by the open glass doors as well as by the accesses to the sanctuary that invite the worshipper to yield himself. The interior of the sanctuary is accented by wide and elegant lines which rise from the ground over the walls to the ceiling. The slightly sloping floor leads to the central place around the altar, where the boundaries between presbytery and the church nave are blurred. The reality of God’s Incarnation and life among people is in this descent toward the altar, in the unity of the space, in the growing together with the earthly. God descends into man’s reality, beauty and mystery so that man can rise to God’s heights. Although the church is still not completely finished — the tabernacle, ambry, organ, and pews are still missing — the new church is already in service of the Church which gathers, grows, witnesses in it. ... The fusion of concrete and glass, stone and wood is a call to the fusion of human ex- istence and the fusion of the spiritual and the material in man. That is why the buses were all parked in the mall’s lot. We were told to leave ai 6:30 p.m. which seemed unjust. But there were 300 buses from all over the United States, Mexico and Canada and they could not have the buses parked there because the parking spaces were occupied. So anyhow, we went looking for where we had put our chairs. We finally found them, but it seemed I left them not on a flat spot; but we just settled in. We were in a group of people from Mexico who live in Texas. They shared with us pictures they had taken and one in particular was familiar — just like the one my daughter Marian took last April. It was a picture of the door to heaven. Some showed us their Rosaries that the silver metal had turned to gold. My sister-in-law Rosie took many pictures but all she got was a black Polaroid picture. There were at least 150,000 to 200,000 people there. Just before noon, we were told to wave our white hankies so that the TV people in the helicopters above us would think that white doves had ascended. We were then told our Blessed Mother had come. We then said the 15 stanzas of the Fatima hymn. We started the Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious mysteries of the Rosary. At the end of each decade, we sang “Ave, Ave, Ae Maria,” and waved our hankies. Sitting in our uneven spot, my tail bone hurt. It was painful, and I had told Our Lord and Mother Mary that I accept this as part of my atonement and for others. Each decade was said in a different language and answered in your own language. It was cold and drizzly the entire time, but people prayed and were intent on what was happening. The atmosphere was that of awe and devotion. After we finished the three Rosaries, we were told that Our Blessed Mother had left and had given a message: “My dear children, in the peace of my Son, Jesus I greet you. Peace, (she paused), peace will not come upon the world unless you return to God. I have come to deliver an urgent plea. The urgent call is for all mankind to return to God now. Our hearts are grievously offended by the sins of ungrateful souls all over the world. I came to Fatima and asked for reparation. Again I come and I seek willing souls to make reparation. Please dear children, you must stop offending God. “I have warned you of wars, of natural disasters, famine, droughts, flood, epidemics, and suffering of every kind and you fail to understand that God wants you to follow his words. My children, the further you walk from God, the more you become a slave. Your very freedom is being taken away from you. Take to heart these words and return to God. Thank you for your prayers and sacrifices. As you make the Sign of the Cross I will depart.” The Blessed Mother then explained that she would bless everything that the pilgrims brought with them and that her hands will be outstretched over her children as graces fall. After the apparition, we headed for the Holy Hill. People were edifying and helpful to others. At one time, I rolled up my pants for it was muddy, wet and treacherous. Going to the Holy Hill, where there is a well, and a statue of our Blessed Mother and a large crucifix which is about a half-hour walk. About half way there, I slipped in the muddy red clay and was told the path was closed. But I was determined to get there and tried another way. But I then lost Millie, Rosie and Connie. I called and called but nothing. I wanted to get water from the well to wash my eyes. So I headed back to the Apparition Building and found our chairs. I sat down and waited for Millie. The buses were arriving to pick up their people. About 4 p.m. Millie found me. I was wet, covered with mud, but happy. We then went up to the Apparition Room. It was here that Our Lady and Our Lord visit with Nancy. People were praying and just gazing at a statue of Our Blessed Mother. Millie and Connie saw the statue blink. They had their miracle from the Blessed Mother. Then about 6 p.m. we saw our bus arrive. It was the last one. Monica turned into the parking lot and got stuck in the mud. A tow truck came and by 8 p.m. we were able to board our bus. Monica was all apologetic, but no one complained but praised her. The windshield was steamed up more by our wetness and heat of our bodies. Our driver was in a sad situation, but she made it. We then stopped for supper. By 10 p.m. we headed for Orlando. As soon as we arrived in Florida we made a rest stop. It was just what we all needed. After we all stretched our legs and had refreshments we headed home. On our bus someone told our tour directors that our Blessed Mother had appeared at the front of the bus and gave assurance that we will arrive safely in Orlando. We finally arrived on Friday at 5:45 a.m. We had been up for 24 hours and no complaints. This is a blessing and an honor. I firmly believe in these apparitions and will do all I can to spread the message of penance, mortification and self restraint. God created us to show Him and to love Him. He has given us guidelines in the Ten Commandments. If we want heaven, it is there only if we work and live for it. It is not an easy task, especially in these times of greed and lust. May God bless you all and Mother Mary and St. Joseph guide and protect you. As you say the Rosary and at the end of each decade please say this prayer requested by our Blessed Mother, “O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to heaven, especially those who have most need of your mercy.” God our Father, please send us holy priests. Predlani smo se seznanili z rajno Barbaro Remec, a danes se nam je predstavila ga. Erika Marija Bajuk. Zasledujemo jo že leta in se nam je končno obneslo. Razkazala nam je svoja dela, delno razstavljena, delno s skioptičnim predavanjem v dvorani pod ladjo Sv. Štefana. Pretiha je ona in preskro-mna, da bi jo bilo videti pov-sod- A toliko ima povedati o ^vojem delu! Res je, mnoga °zivetja so zaznamovana za v^elej, na kopici njenih risb, sl'k in kipov, večinoma v bar-vah. ki jih je ona čutila kot Primerne. (Nam se je doslej dozdevalo, da je zadosten samo nadpoprečen dar, magični talent, ki vodi roko -brez vsakih obvez; rekli smo vselej: »ta in ta ima roko za risanje.) Sedaj vemo, da je pri ustvarjanju vprežena vsa duševnost umetnika. Tehnika mu daje le metodo, kot pravilno izbrano »orodje«, brez katerega ni poti do uspeha. Vsebina pa se ustvarja najprej v možganih in obenem v srcu, kar skupno pomeni duševnost. Pridruži se polet, volja, vztrajnost, čut za natančnost, za barvni sklad, ter za proporcije in prioritete (sončno-senčno). Umetnik veliko premišljuje in usklajuje; nič nepremišljenega se ne sme vtihotapiti. Kljub temu si razlagamo upodobitev vsak po svoje. Najdemo celo marsikaj nerazumljivega, pretiranega ali zamolčanega, kar nas oddaljuje od umetnikovega osnutka; se pravi, umetnino doživljamo vsak po svoje. Kdor jo motri le z očmi, ne bo dosti videl, sodelovati mora miselnost. Občutje gledavca ni elementarno, ampak združeno, če vse odtenke odkrijemo naenkrat; saj so vse značilnosti vložene v umetnino hkratne, da bi se hkrati razumele prav po zaslugi medsebojne dopolnitve. Po Erikinem mnenju smo rojeni zato, da mislimo in u-stvarjamo. Upodabljajoči umetnik je tisti, ki hkrati več vidi in je v njem predstava popolnejša od naše. Zato se on trudi posneti vse sodelujoče komponente in ne prezre nobene — toda s čim manjšim številom črt, barv in drugih izrazilnic. Brez potrate torej! To prinaša navidezni čudež: Minimalne poteze z maksimalno izrazitvijo; podobno kot je pri literatih jedrnatost. Neto brez tare — to je tihi zakon umetnosti. Primeri Že prve Erikine slike so nam to zahtevo nedvomno potrdile. Le skopo črtovje prikazuje obraze potnikov v vlaku, »krmljenj golobov« in drugo... Lesoreza se je Erika vselej izogibala; z drugimi skulpturami pa se je docela spoprijela: železne sestave, kamen, to jo je mikalo na vsej dolgi poti. Pravilno, prav natančno so predmeti prikazani; nobena stran ni zanemarjena, spregledana, nepravilno osenčena. To je po njenem osnovna kiparska zahteva. Njena »Zapuščena klop« zato res deluje osamela, a »Prelomljena obljuba« navdaja z zaničljivostjo. In ko nam prikaže »Breme«, se umetnica zaveda, da ima ona svojo telesno in duševno komponento, od katerih nobena ni prezrta. Pri agregatnih prizorih pričakuje prostorski (plastični) učinek na gledavca, kar pomeni dodatno zahtevo v pogledu presoje proporcij. Pogovor s prof. Lojzetom Peterletom, predsednikom SKD Slovenija je spet na prelomnici Tekst intervjuja je izšel v koroškem tedniku »Nedelja« 20. novembra. Intervju posredujemo z izjemo dveh vprašanj, ki se nanašata na drugi predmet od osrednjega. Ur. Notranjepolitični položaj v Sloveniji je v zadnjih tednih zelo razburkan. Naj v telegramskem stilu ponovimo ključne dogodke: Potem ko je koalicija liberalcev, nekdanjih komunistov in Jelinčičevih nacionalistov izvolila za predsednika slovenskega parlamenta Jožeta Školča, je »iz moralnih razlogov« zunanji minister Lojze Peterle odstopil. Do izvolitve novega zunanjega ministra (premier Drnovšek je odklonil kandidata krščanskih demokratov) je prof. Peterle še naprej opravljal nalogo zunanjega ministra. V tem času so bila pogajanja z Italijo, s katerimi naj bi bil odpravljen veto Italije za začetek pogajanj o pridruženem članstvu Slovenije v Evropski uniji. Dvakrat (v Ogleju in Rimu) se je minister Peterle z italijanskim zunanjim ministrom dogovoril za sporazum, dvakrat je slovenska vlada s premierom Drnovškom na čelu sporazum odklonila, hkrati pa zunanjega ministra obdolžila nezmožnosti. Peterle je nato svoji stranki predlagal, da izstopi iz vladne koalicije... V Tinjah smo predsednika Slovenskih krščanskih demokratov prosili, da pojasni nekaj najbolj zapletenih okoliščin zadnjih tednov. • Gospod Peterle, težko bi našli politika, ki so ga osebno skušali tako ponižati in opljuvati (,,diletant“, ,,narodni iz-dajalec“) kakor pa vas. Kaj je v ozadju vsega tega? Sami ste navedli notranjepolitične razloge... Model je enak kakor leta 1992, ko je šlo za to, da krščanske demokrate spravijo iz vlade, ker smo pač vodili uspešno politiko. Zdaj se je zopet obetal lep uspeh, ker smo po vseh neuspelih pogovorih z Italijani prišli do sprejemljivega, sicer ne idealnega, kompromisa, ki bi omogočal, da bi dobili zeleno luč pri pogajanjih z Evropsko zvezo. Glede preteklosti ničesar ne vračamo, ničesar ne dajemo, ampak smo pozorni do ljudi, ki so trpeli pod komunizmom, tako kakor smo pozorni do ljudi, ki so trpeli pod fašizmom. Po drugi strani pa sem dosegel obljubo za nekatere pozitivne ukrepe v zvezi s slovensko manjšino v Italiji. V stilu agitpropagande so mene, ki sem dal vse, kar sem mogel v času osamosvajanja in tudi potem, skorajda označili za narodnega izdajalca. V ozadju je politična igra, ki se vodi v škodo Slovenije. V koalicijski pogodbi smo zapisali, da bi morala Slovenija pri integraciji v Evropo ujeti korak s tako imenovanimi višegrajskimi državami. Zdaj se bojim, da bomo po zaslugi takšne politike prišli ne le v baltiško kategorijo, temveč spet v jugoslovanski okvir. Za vse tiste, ki so podirali moje dogovore, pa imam samo eno vprašanje: Kdaj in kdo bo dosegel v pogovorih z Italijo boljši in cenejši rezultat? Ravnanje vaše stranke v zvezi z vašo zahtevo po izstopu iz koalicije ni ravno odsev odločnosti. Lahko iz tega sklepamo, da je vaš položaj tudi znotraj stranke ogrožen? Jaz sem odločno povedal, da predlagam izstop iz koalicije. Mora pa to skleniti in potrditi svet stranke. Ta se po našem kongresu še ni ustanovil. Želel bi si, da se to odloči prej kot kasneje. Je pa stranka pluralistična in so tudi znotraj stranke različni pogledi na to, ali ostanemo ali gremo iz koalicije. Na klavzuri sem dobil vso podporo in računam na to tudi v bodoče. Nekateri položaj povezujejo tudi s tistim delom novega programa krščanskih demokratov, ki se ukvarja z vojnim in povojnim časom. Na Koroškem je bilo slišati celo mnenje, da je SKD postala neodo-mobranska stranka. Celo tržaški Katoliški glas kritično piše, da se obravnava samo vloga domobrancev, partizanski boj pa sploh ni omenjen... IS) ta nujnost zelo hvaležna — naravnost elementarna.) Dodatni pogoji Mi laiki radi med drugim pozabljamo na telesne moči, potrebne pri kiparstvu. Trpijo dlani in mišičje; Erikine roke so videti izrabljene. Nujen je tudi ustrezen časovni razpon; naglica je pogubna. To vse skupaj z ravnovesenim premišljevanjem daje videz, da umetnik »ne dela«, ko se uvodoma poglablja v celoto in odtenke. Zdi se, da se le neodločno o-gleduje. V resnici on že naporno kombinira izbrane sestavke, združevaje imaginacijo s tehniko, in tudi z odsevom. Ta združeni napor terja posebno koncentracijo vseh moči. Zato zahteva Erika ustrezno okolje, nemoteno tišino, ki dopušča harmonično zbiranje drobcev za namensko agregacijo. Drugi ustvarjalci trdijo, da primerna glasba prispeva kohezivno, kar pa ona ne verjame. (Pisec se popolnoma strinja z njo.) Končno, upodabljanje postavlja resnično doživetvenost kot bistvo. Dotiki in prehodi Ko smo med predavanjem spoštljivo zrli v razstavljene slike, smo vedeli, da ne bo mogla umetnica izreči vsega, kar čuti vzhičena duša. Ona se docela uživi v vsak svoj poseg, a teh ni moč prešteti; prekratka je ura in prenaporna že postaja razlaga (pa tudi poslušanje!.), da bi se moglo zajeti vse. Ostanejo le obrisi predstav in umetničina povezanost s temi dragulji. Ne čudimo se, da je ona uspešna v Evropi in Ameriki in da njena razgledanost obvladuje vse razpete korenine. Na vprašanje, če je kdaj čutila kakega svetovnega umetnika kot svoj zgled, ki mu naj skuša slediti, je Erika odvrnila, da je na njo učinkoviteje delovalo zaporedje vplivov na njeno lastno stopnišče navzgor in sicer iz njene notranjosti: Začenši kot otrok, ko si je prizadevala vsakemu predmetu v domači hiši dati primerno podobo na papirju, ali v ilovki, kot sliko ali model, in se ji je zdelo, da bi enako morali počenjati vsi — v normalnem odnosu do okolice. Spomne se ona pri tem, da jo je podpiral oče, prav izdat- no, s polnim soglašanjem, in ni skoparil niti omalovaževal upodobitvenih pobud. Upora torej ni čutila od nikoder in je mendar prav z lahkoto drvela umetništvu nasproti, ne glede na nenehne težave. Prehodila je z velikim upanjem strme taboriščne poti, hiteč svobodi v naročje; a zahtevam v pogledu delavnosti je prisluhnila ob vsakem njenem migljaju. S Slovenijo je vselej bila Erika v dobrih stikih, posebej še z današnjo kolikor toliko demokratično upravo. V njeni integriteti ni torej najti razpok. Hvaležni smo ji za današnjo bogato izpoved. Le-ta je čez mero poučna za tiste, ki si le od daleč upamo presojati težave na eni strani in zadoščenja umetnika na drugi. Videti je, da ji motnje niso odkrhnile optimističnih mozaičnih drobcev, kvečjemu so jo upehale. To pomeni sladko utrujenost, gledaje na nesmrtne uspehe. • Dodajmo, da se je Kulturna ura pričela z duetom redko (ali nikdar) slišane Forsterjeve: »Ah, ni li zemljica krasna?« in se je zaključila z bolj znano Ipavčevo »Slovenska dežela«. Dopadljivo ^ujemanje Marije Remec (alt) in Nandi Puc (sopran) je hkrati potrdilo njuno izvrstnost. Po rahlem prigrizku smo se zadoščeno razšli. Umetnici želimo še veliko delovnih uspehov in nedvomnega zadoščenja. M. M. Seveda ne uporabljamo izraza »narodnoosvobodilni boj«, kajti če je »narodnoosvobodilni boj« to, da po koncu vojne brez sodbe pobijejo deset tisoč ljudi in več, potem je to čudna osvoboditev. Kajti potem, ko je bil fašizem pregnan - tega se z veseljem spominjamo - se je začela druga okupacija: okupacija duha in ljudi Komunistične partije. Zelo lepo bi bilo, če bi na Slovenskem lahko praznovali samo zmago nad fašizmom. Jaz to z vsem srcem praznujem, hkrati pa vem, da pozna slovenska zgodovina tudi genocidno obnašanje nove oblasti. Zato je povsem jasno, da se gradi prihodnost Slovenije na protifašizmu, nikakor pa ne gre, da se bo gradila na »revoluciji«. V panelu Tokovi in smeri sodobne slovenske umetnosti so nastopili: Marjetica Potrč s predavanjem Slovenska skulptura v Ameriki: Minimundus in resnični svet; Marina Geržinič z referatom Neue sloweni-sche Kunst ali Nova slovenska umetnost: Umetniške skupine Laibach, Irwin, Cosmokineti-cal Theatre Noordung — Nove kulturne strategije v devetdesetih letih; in Igor Zabel s temo: Ground and Its Loss; Landscape in Recent Slovene Art. Diskusijo po referatih je vodila prof. Myroslava Cisz-kewycz (Ohio State U.). V sekciji Republika Slovenija in njeni sosedje so predavatelji obravnavali tri sektorje odnošajev Slovencev s svojimi sosedi v preteklosti: prof. Janez Cvirn je govoril o Sloven-sko-nemških odnošajih, prof. Peter Vodopivec o Odnosih Slovencev do Hrvatov in Srbov, in prof. Jože Pirjevec o Slovensko-italijanskih odnošajih. Strokovno diskusijo v tej sekciji je intoniral prof. Bogdan Novak. Četrta sekcija je bila sekcija za okroglo mizo; tukaj je beseda tekla o manjšinah in priseljencih v Slovenijo po drugi svetovni vojni v bivši Jugoslaviji in problematiki njihovega naseljevanja v Sloveniji. V sekciji so sodelovali: prof. Matjaž Klemenčič, prof. Vladimir Klemenčič, prof. Robin Alison Remington, in prof. Jože Velikonja. Nadvse uspešna prireditev Zahvalnega dne EASTLAKE, O. - Na Zahvalni dan, v četrtek, 24. novembra, kakor tudi naslednji dan, je bilo zelo živahno v Marriott hotelu v središču Clevelanda. Tony Petkovšek, radijski veteran, saj vodi svoje oddaje že 33. leto, je s skupino članov Radio kluba sprejemal goste, ko so prihajali v veliko dvorano hotela, kjer se je vršila vsakoletna prireditev »Veselica polke '4«. Oba dni je prišlo več kot 1000 navdušenih plesalcev polke in valčka, ki so v veselem razpoloženju preplesali ure in ure na lepem plesnem prostoru ob zvokih znanih orkestrov iz Clevelanda in tudi iz drugih krajev širom Amerike. Kar veliko pozornost si je žel Alpski sekstet, saj so že slovenske narodne noše, v katerih so bili člani ansambla, izstopile izmed drugih ansamblov. K velikemu uspehu sta pridali pevki Mimi Kozina in Vida Tripoto, ki sta zelo lepo prepevali in h kvaliteti ansambla veliko prispevali. Posebne čestitke še harmonikašu Slavku Teskaču k njegovemu instrumentalnemu valčku, katerega je ansambel mojstrsko izvedel. V soboto, 26. novembra, je bila sedma podelitev nagrad glasbenikom in kulturnikom v Euclid Cultural centru na E. 222 cesti. Okoli 1100 gledalcev je napolnilo veliko dvorano in z navdušenim ploskanjem čestitalo nagrajencem. Ker je bila prireditev (kakor tudi lanska) posneta na videotraku, bodo kasete kasneje prodajali. Tudi pri »polka« sv. maši, katero je daroval škof Edward Pevec, je bilo polno, kakor na plesu, ki je bil isti večer z naslovom »Srečajte se z nagrajenci«. Udeležba letošnje prireditve je potrdila, da je le-ta postala po vsej Ameriki zelo popularna in tudi, da na popularnost z vsakim letom še pridobiva. D.M. v Ljubljani. Nato je prof. Priporočajte Ameriško Domovino svojim slovenskim prijateljem in znancem! Obisk Komornega zbora »Ave« v Torontu TORONTO, Ont. - Sredi oktobra nas je obiskal Komorni zbor Ave iz Ljubljane. Že pred letom in pol smo se o tem obisku pogovarjali z Boštjanom Kocmurjem, predsednikom Slovenije v svetu, kako organizirati gostovanje tega zbora po Severni Ameriki. Ameriški in Kanadski svet sta to odgovornost prevzela in začela z rezervacijami dvorani že v začetku leta. Načrt tega obiska naj bi bil trojen: 1. Zbor Ave bo kulturno doživetje vseh Slovencev, 2. predstavili bomo javnosti Slovenijo s kulturnega vidika, 3. zbor bo imel priliko predstave in izmenjave s tukajšnjimi zbori. Že mesec pred ..prihodom smo seznanjali slovensko javnost, da bo zbor nastopal v vseh treh slovenskih dvoranah: pri sv. Gregoriju v Hamiltonu, pri Mariji Pomagaj v Torontu, in pri Brezmadežni v Novem Torontu. Uspelo nam je napolniti vse dvorane, poslušalci pa so bili navdušeni nad dobro izbranim programom in kvalitetnem petjem pod vodstvom Andraža Hauptmana, ki zbor uspešno vodi že deset let. Pri mašah in koncertih so bila njihova izvajanja sprejeta z velikim navdušenjem. Pri kanadski javnosti pa smo predstavili zbor Ave, kot profesionalce z mnogimi odličji na Torontski univerzi (Walter Hall). Uprava univerze nam je čestitala, da se je toliko poslušalcev udeležilo tega Kanadčanom nepoznanega zbora oz. zborovega koncerta. Glasbeno izobražena javnost je stoje nagradila naše pevce z dolgotrajnim ploskanjem. Opazili smo nekatere dirigente in posamezne pevce, ki so se zelo pohvalno izražali o zboru. Zanimali so se, kako navezati stike s Slovenijo in kako bi tudi oni imeli priliko tam go- stovati. Nekateri od teh pevcev so v Ljubljani že nastopali. Zbor Ave je bil tudi gost v katedrali sv. Mihaela. Mons. Armstrong je zbor pozdravil in ga predstavil pevski šoli sv. Mihaela (okrog 400 dijakov), ki so imeli ravno na ta dan mašo za pokojnega ustanovitelja te šole. Monsignor je dejal med drugim: »Predstavljam vam zbor Ave iz Slovenije, od koder izhaja naš nadškof dr. Alojzij Ambrožič, ki je trenutno v Rimu.« Maše se je udeležilo tudi več Slovencev, in ko je zbor odpel Kyrie eleison, ki je mogočno odmeval, nam je bilo žal, da ni bilo med nami našega nadpastirja. V tem kratkem času, ko smo imeli pevce med nami, je bil spored zelo pester, saj so bili na televiziji, predstavili so jih na radiu, Metro Hall, ogledali in zapeli so v koncertni dvorani Roy Thompson Hall, obiskali starostni Dom Lipa, in seveda obiskali najvišji stolp na svetu, CN Tower. Ob tej priliki pa se še enkrat vsem, ki ste k uspehu tega obiska kakorkoli pripomogli, prav iskreno zahvalim, Andražu Hauptmanu in pevcem Ave pa še v bodoče veliko uspehov. Upamo pa, če bo Slovenija v svetu organizirala koncert Ave tudi v Argentini, da se jim bomo pridružili tudi Slovenci iz Severne Amerike. (49-50) Novo obdobje slovenskih oddaj Glasa Amerike WASHINGTON, D.C. - Z ozirom na tehnološki napredek, se tudi Glas Amerika prilagaja novim načinom komunikacij. Tudi slovenska redakcija se je pridružila mnogim drugim jezikom in ne bo več oddajala na kratkih valovih. Slovenske oddaje bodo odslej dostopne poslušalcem širom po Sloveniji. S pomočjo satelita bomo prisotni domala v slehernem slovenskem domu v najbolj poslušanem programskem pasu, saj bomo odslej oddajali na UKW (FM). Od 12. decembra dalje bosta dve lokalni postaji, Studio D v Novem mestu in Radio Kranj, predvajali ob 6.40 zvečer po lokalnem času 10-minutna poročila. Ob 7. uri zvečer pa bodo slovenski poslušalci lahko slišali celotno polurno oddajo Glasa Amerike v slovenskem jeziku na Radio Ognjišče in Radio-Radio Murska Sobota. Slovenska redakcija Glasa Amerike se želi ob tej priliki zahvaliti vsem, ki so nam z raznimi intervencijami pomagali, da sta slovenski program in slovenski oddelek Glasa Amerike ostala neokrnjena, posebno še ohijskemu guvernerju Georgeu V. Voinovichu in kongresniku Jamesu Ober-starju. Ludvik Krneli Dne 24. novembra je v Wickliffe Country Place umrl 87 let stari Ludvik Krneli, rojen v Clevelandu, starši so ga vzeli v Slovenija kot otrok in-se je v Cleveland vrnil 1. 1927, vdovec po Mary, roj. Omenja, da iz Kanade MZA dar za vse na Madagaskarju še ni dobila od Apostolskega krožka, a ga verjetno bo ob koncu leta 1994. Misijonar Franc Buh se je prišel z Madagaskarja v Francijo zdravit. Sestra Rozalija Šmalc pa še živi, ker so z njo ravnokar po telefonu govorile. Zelo nam je žal, da smo objavili njeno smrt, sporočeno iz Slovenije po zanesljivem viru. Motiti se je človeško, moramo reči in verjeti. V Zambijo smo odposlali pomoč MZA preko gospe Frances Ziernfeld v Torontu. Božična pisma pa smo odposlali za devet misijonarjev preko o. Jožeta Grošlja, vsakemu na njegovo ime in o. Radkotu Rudežu posebej, ker se je ravno oglasil z dolgim, zanimivim pismom. OO. Tam so bili v državi boji, ker je bila Angola več let pod vlado komunizma, saj je Fidel Castro, ko se je njih čas iztekel, moral priznati pred vsem svetom, da so morali umakniti številne kubanske vojake iz dežele.
