St. Gregory the Great Slovenian Church 31/47 Številka - Number / Leto - Year 21.8.2011 21. NEDELJA MED LETOM 21SH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Fr. Potrebna ji bo trdnost nauka. Če ta nauk o sebi pravi, da vsebuje največje in najvišje resnice o Bogu in človeku; če obljublja večno življenje in vsebuje možnost večnega pogubljenja; če se splača zato, da ga pridobiš, izgubiti vse na svetu, potem mora imeti ta nauk trdno podlago in krepko zagotovilo. Potrebna ji bo trdnost ustanove. Folklorna skupina VENEC had the pleasure to travel to Montreal on July 1517th to participate at St. Vladimir's annual Slovenski dan. Eight of our couples enjoyed the many sights, sounds and flavours of Montreal on Friday and Saturday. River boat cruises, shopping, celebrating one of our very own dancers, Jason Hocevar~s birthday were all highlights of the trip, as were the contagious latin dancers. The Sunday performance showed the dedication of its members who performed in extremely hot temperatures to the Montreal-Slovenian crowd. We appreciate the hospitality of the Montreal church and the many people who were enthusiastic to congratulate our newly established group. Special thanks to Matej Glavac for all his help in organizing this trip. Sunday's Readings 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading Isaiah 22:19-23 Eliakim, as master of the palace, is entrusted with the key of the House of David and is deputed to open and close the palace in the king's name. Second Reading Romans 11:33-36 The depth of the wisdom and knowledge of God; how unsearchable are God's ways! Gospel Matthew 16:13-20 Peter acknowledges Jesus as Christ, Son of the living God; and Jesus recognises Peter as the rock on which the Church is built and the bearer of the keys of the kingdom. Illustration A little less than one year ago, Pope Benedict XVI made a historic visit to Britain. Historic because it was not only a pastoral visit but also a state one: the Pope came at the invitation of Queen Elizabeth. Historic also because it was the first time that a beatification had taken place on British soil: during his stay Pope Benedict proclaimed that John Henry Newman was numbered among the Blessed. Despite much media cynicism before the Pope's arrival, the visit turned out to be a resounding success. In addition to major events, such as the Masses, the Pope's address to the Houses of Parliament and his ecumenical meeting with the Archbishop of Canterbury, there were other memorable moments during his three-day stay. Among them was a speech of greeting given in the name of the Catholic young people of the nation. It was delivered by a twenty-one-year-old man, Paschal Uche, in the piazza of Westminster Cathedral. Paschal described his joy at this face-to-face meeting with the Holy Father. His eloquence and enthusiasm moved many people - not least Pope Benedict himself. Gospel Teaching That simple meeting between a young student and the Pope was witnessed by millions of people throughout the world. But that meeting wasn't altogether unrelated to another meeting, which took place almost two thousand years ago: a meeting witnessed by only a handful of people in a lonely spot but destined to have repercussions to the end of time - a meeting between Jesus and a young man called Simon Peter. It's the meeting we heard about in our Gospel today. Jesus, with his friends, has travelled far north into the region of Caesarea Philippi. In this secluded spot he asks them who people think he is. There's a variety of opinions: perhaps he's John the Baptist, or Elijah, or Jeremiah, or one of the prophets. But what about the apostles themselves: what do they think? It's Peter who answers on behalf of all: "You are the Messiah," he says, "the Son of the living God." He recognises not only that Jesus is the Messiah, the Christ, but that he is divine, the very "Son of the living God". Jesus tells him that he is blessed, that only a special revelation of the Father could have enabled him to recognise him as the Son of God, and to make his confession of faith in him. Jesus goes on to tell Simon that he is to have a new name, a highly significant name. He is to be called Peter; in the Greek of the New Testament, Peter means quite simply "the rock". Jesus adds that it's upon this rock that he will build his Church. Because of that solid foundation, "the gates of the netherworld", all the power of evil, will never overcome it. And Peter is to hold the keys of the kingdom. In our first reading we heard how a new master of the palace was entrusted with the keys of the kingdom as a sign of his authority. Peter and his successors, entrusted with the keys, have authority in the Church, have the power of binding and loosing, have the task of leading the people of God in their long, sometimes difficult, journey of faith. Application The unique role of the Pope, the successor of Peter, is strikingly demonstrated on Easter Sunday when from the balcony of St Peter's Basilica in Rome he solemnly declares "to the city and to the world" that Jesus is risen. The Church is the community of those who confess that Jesus of Nazareth is risen, that he is divine. The Pope, like Peter before him, leads us in our faith, and yet he is still one of us, a creature of flesh and blood, always capable of failing, and therefore always standing in need of divine help and guidance if he is to fulfil his awesome task. Paschal, the young student who addressed Benedict XVI in London, recalls how the Pope "put his hand on my shoulder and said well done... and he put his head close to mine [and] said he would pray for me". And that may serve as an inspiration to us all. There is no more fitting response to today's Gospel than the resolve to keep the Pope constantly in our prayers, that he may always be strong in faith and hope, that he may prove to be a true Holy Father to all God's people.
