In their plače we have ; the season of autumn with its cool, invigorating winds and, oceasionally, a flood of Indian summer sunshine. Straight ahead awaits winter clothed in snow, ice, sleet and bleek, cloudy skies... We are now right in the middle of the best season of the year for enrolling new members, and as far as using the vveather as an alibi for a let-down in production, that’s out until NEW YEAR’S DAY, 73 days hence. “Oh! It’s too hot to work!” —or—“It’s too cold to be out doors.” — or—“I’ve got spring fever so gosh darn bad I can’t even pick-up my feet.”-— Those are standard excuses in summer, winter and spring, re- spectively; but this is autumn, when it is neither too hot nor too cold, v/hich means that it’s usually just about right. . . Folks, the final PUSH is on! . . . The LAST BIG DRIVE of 1937 for new members has just begun, and we urge you, one and ali, to join those vvho have already paved the way for a new member- ship mark by putting forth your best efforts during the closing months of the WHEEL OF PROGRESS campaign. So far, the campaign has netted a total gain of approximate- ly 400 new members, which means that we are stili a long ways from the goal of success. For the campaign to be called a success, a gain of more than 600 new members must be made during the next 73 days. CAN THIS BE DONE? ... IT CAN! . . . Not by sitting back and merely thinking that it can be done, but by rising up and TFIINKING, TALKING and ACTING so that IT SHALL BE DONE! . . . If you’ve a father or mother, a brother or sister, a cousin or friend, whose health is not questionable and who can afford to be a member of our Society or afford more insurance benefits if they are members, set out determined that THEY SHALL BE ENROLLED before the end of the year. If every family, in which there is now an S.S.P.Z. member, added another of its number to the Society’s ranks, the goal of 1000 new members would be exceeded by many hundreds. . . And so, it is up to each and every member of the Society to join the roots of his FAMILY TREE more firmly with the roots and the protecting branches of the S.S.P.Z. TREE. . . Let’s you and I, ali of us, make our families 100 per cent S.S.P.Z. conscious, both, in number and aetivity. . . From now and on and always, let ONVVARD AND UPWARD in membership and achievement be our aim! BITS OF CAMPAIGN NEWS AND VIEWS What vvill the remaining days of the campaign bring?... Observer elassified as hillbillies or worse white trash should oil shooting arms and pepper that fellovv in vital part of his anatom v for commercializing their simple way of living, through the newspapers, radio and theatre. Tune in any radio dial and it is a safe tvvo to one bet that yo u’ll get an earfull of hillbilly musical ability as imitated b v chaps vvho vvere raised dovYn by the river in the noisy Ward. and educated to vote Joe 0’Malley s straight Republj Can i ticket. On the sereen, the anties of happy, but skinny, U nd er , nourished, ragged blue over-alled, tobacco chevvin’, bewhisker e <] iads vvith an Elizabethan English slang vocabulary are paraded for your enjoyment. Usually a shot-gun vvedding scene i n a broken dovvn cabin is throvvn in for good measure, The news- papers out do ali the other agencies of entertainment when it comes to exploiting the humble mountaineer. Ali large dailieg have one or tvvo comic strips depicting the daily adventures of a group of lovv-dovvn, slang-slinging, slimy, tiashy, simple and ragged out-fit of humans that the good Loid could possibly herd under the roof of one log-cabin. In the commercializing of the poor natives of the Southern mountains their every-day life is pictured as a lazy, care-free existence, and their poverty and ignorance, poor-housing, de- pravity, and crime is played upon as something highly enter¬ taining and amusing. This has led the American people to feel apathetic tovvards any movement of rehabilation of the Southern vvhite, and their mode of living is elassified as picturesque and romantic. It is a great deal of fun to see hill-billies in a comic strip ! or a movie, and their mušic is entertaining, but hovv many 0 f us pause to think that if only half or one-fourth is true of the living eonditions as pictured by these agencies that something must be done to lift these people out of social and moral morass. Under our present B^ederal Administration, steps have been taken to relieve and help these unfortunate people through vari- ous resettlement projects and housingprograms. But the task has only begun as President Roosevelt said, “to help, the third ill-fed ill-clothed ill-housed. Any broad housing and resettlement project should receive our hearty approval. Here is another day and I’m vvith it, vvith my bits of nevvs from here, there and everywhere, ali in a nutshell. When Joyce Gorshe our pretty sec’y vvas last in Pennsy, Pete Elish gave her quite a rush. Yes Siree, and that's not ali, she invited him to our Hallovve’en Party too. I bet you my boots he'll be there too. Won’t you Pete? Bill Shllar calling long distance. Call- ing vvho? Dorothy Močnik. Where from? Pittsburg. What for? To teli her hovv much he missed her you fool. Who does Ann Opeka prefer anyway. Tony Bolka or Jake Žagar. I always see |her vvith both so I just can’t figure it out. Maybe she’ll teli me sometime. Hovv about it Annie? Last night I overheard something about our star pitcher Stan Stokel. AH the vvhile he’s been up in Mich., he's been corresponding vvith a certain girl on Carry Ave. Did I give you away Sophie? What happened betvveen Joe Može and Bob Matetich. They’re not to- gether as much as they used to be. I guess “Audry” is keeping Joe busy. The j love bug bites everybody sometime or other, aye Joe? I see Moe is stili learning to dance. But, gosh, gee, oh vvhiz, Moe, you’ll never learn by standing in a line ali i evening. Get out on the floor and shovv them vvhat you can do. Call on me i sometime and Tli see if I can help you out. Stan Žagar and a couple of the other | boys including of course, Chuck Koman l and Rudy Lisch spent the last vveekend ; in Pennsy. They claim they had a very lovely time and I don’t doubt it either. But vvhatever made Stan Žagar sick I I don’t knovv. What vvas it this time—too many girls or too much firevvater? Stan Race finally decided to look us up. He hasn’t been vvith us for quite a vvhile. I vvonder if there's a girl behind | this too. Tom Žagar, Vera Candon and Rudy Lisch always have that brotherly and sisterly špirit among themselves. Hovv j about it fellows? Say, Frankie Spehek vvhere vvere you :^„^ e . la : St meetin g. Your name. vvas called but no Frankie came to collect the five dollars. Yes, five dollars Did you knovv that Stan Zorc has a nevv suit.
