Sunday's Readings 34th Sunday in Ordinary Time Response: "The Lord is king; he is robed in majesty." First Reading Daniel 7:13-14 In his mysterious vision, Daniel glimpses the peace and unity of God's kingdom. At the centre of his vision is a figure of a man who is divinely given kingship - a foreshadowing of Jesus. Second Reading Apocalypse 1:5-8 In a revelation of the last things, this reading calls us to look beyond the here and now to Christ's eternal reign. All things are drawn to him and in his love we are made a royal priesthood. Gospel_John 18:33-37 At the end of his life, Jesus stands before Pilate as both powerless and king. His kingship is not of this world, but draws us into truth. "Mine is not a kingdom of this world." Illustration "King of Glory, King of Peace, I will love thee!" These words open the well-known poem and hymn of the seventeenth-century poet and Anglican priest George Herbert - a poem simply called "Praise". Many of Herbert's poems reflect not only the joy of Christian life but also the sadness and struggles that are part of human living. There is often a sad longing in his verse, even as he turns to God for help. In this poem the mood is 356 | VESTNIK 2012 straight away one of love and delight in the Lord, whom he addresses as "King". But in the next stanza the heart of his praise is made more clear: "Thou hast granted my request, / thou hast heard me. / Thou didst note my working breast, / thou hast spared me." The praise of the king of heaven springs from the place of struggle and need, for it is here that the Christian experiences the great power and majesty of God. Gospel Teaching The readings for today's celebration of the great feast of Christ the King speak to us of the Lord's sovereign rule over all time and space. But they also speak out about the places of muddle and difficulty. This is where this majesty is revealed. In the Gospel we see Jesus in discussion with Pontius Pilate, the person who has the power to hand him over to death or to save him from it. This is a chilling moment of distress when the realities of torture and death are present, and in which friends have run away. Jesus stands in this moment; and here he remembers the kingdom of heaven, and is able to speak of it even to his judge. Jesus witnesses to a kingdom "not of this world", which frees him and his followers from the need to fight their own corner. His kingship is about truth - about seeing things as they really are. In the light of this kingdom even suffering and death are seen differently: the prophet can gaze "into the visions of the night", and see not only darkness but an eternal reign of peace and justice; the writer of the Apocalypse can look into the furthest reaches of human experience - "the Last Things" - and see the joyful drawing of all things together in Christ, "the Alpha and the Omega". This gift of a vision of hope beyond present fears and struggles is a gift of Christ's kingship to his royal people. The language of "king" and "majesty" doesn't come easily to many people today. It can even feel like the language of oppression or the unwarranted wielding of power. Yet we are called, in today's celebration, to come to know Christ not only as friend or teacher, but specifically as king. What might it mean for us, here and now, to live lives ruled by this king, to serve his kingdom, which is "not of this world"? The Gospel tells us this is about truth - about seeing how things really are and responding to that reality. Application Today's readings help us with this difficult call to God's kingdom. For, in all instances, the reality and meaning of Christ's kingship are glimpsed at the place of difficulty, of struggle and of powerlessness. One part of celebrating Christ as our king is recognising the truth of who we are: that as men and women we are often "on the edge", or in the dark, or frightened (however much we get along by ignoring this most of the time). But it is precisely in this truth of our vulnerability that God's reign of love and peace can be experienced, as we turn to Christ and find in him the one who has power over all that keeps us scared and captive. In each of our lives there will be things -some bigger, some less obvious - which feel a bit scary: there are all sorts of "ordinary suffering" in the average life! As these moments touch us in the days ahead, maybe turning to Christ as our king, in a prayer of dedication to his rule in our lives, can bring us closer to him, and to the peace and love he so wants for each of us. Let's ask to learn more deeply what it is to hand over our own anxious control into the depth and power of his love; a love so strong that it has overcome the world.
