Hvala bili so odlični. Vsem članom in prijateljem Slovenskega kluba želim vesele in varne velikonočne praznike. Lep pozdrav, Ivan Cafuta Predsednik President's Address Dear members, I can not believe how quickly three months has past. It seems to me that we said goodbye to a Christmas not long ago and yet here is almost Easter. Once again a Christmas dinner proved to be very popular. Caterer Joe prepared a four course meal for more than 150 people. The food was delicious. Sadly our kitchen ladies are not so young anymore therefore can no longer cook for so many people. Thanks to Joe. We were delighted to meet with fellow countrymen-women from Melbourne on Sunday, 29th December 2013. They pilgrimaged to Penola (the home of Marry McKillop) and then a few days later they continued on their journey to Adelaide. On Sunday, 29th December the group joined us at the celebration mass in the Slovenian church. Later in the afternoon we all met at the club to have dinner with Adelaide archbishop Phillip Wilson who presided over the mass with father Ciril and father David. The archbishop was very impressed with our club. There was a poor turnout on New Year's Eve. Is it worth to have the club open on this night in the future? On Sunday, 9th February we were entertained by a group of Slovenian musicians. The popular singer Manca Špik enchanted the audience, young and old, with her beautiful voice. The rest of the night was taken care by accordion player - singer Hajni Blagne and comedian Klemen Košir with their talented performances. It was a truly enjoyable night. On Sunday, 2nd March we celebrated "Pust"- carnival with a B.B.Q. Pust wouldn't be the carnival that it was without those lovely donuts! A big thank you to the ladies who made such delicious buns (krofe). I would like to thank all those who tirelessly help and support our club. I wish to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy and safe Easter. Ivan Legiša Predsednik ** Dear friends of Slovenian radio, I sincerely thank all of you who attended the radio meeting. I am sure that there is amongst us still a great will for the work, as there is also for listening. Those of you who attended the meeting saw that we are running out of strength. Our requests for someone new to join us and undertake at least one half-hour broadcast a month fall on deaf ears. Our descendants do not understand Slovenian. Today's Slovenian migrants are indifferent straw that the wind carries to the dead immensity of nothingness. Therefore, so that everything might not go to the devil because of illness and age, and that our long history might not be too quickly wiped out, we will have to shorten our time by half - to one half hour program a week. Another possibility is that someone of the second, third generation takes on broadcasting in the English language (certainly we all know English). Anyone who has a little sense of consciousness, love and warmth for their mother's words and blood should talk to one of the committee members who will help them to adapt to the microphone. Blood is not water! If you are at all interested, please raise your hand and join us; not for us but rather for national well-being. New Minister for Slovenians Abroad 25. 2. 2014, STA Gorazd Žmavc plans to focus on the young generation of the Slovenian diaspora and on economic cooperation in his term as minister for Slovenians abroad. Taking over from Tina Komel on Tuesday, he said he would continue the work of his predecessors. Addressing reporters after meeting Komel for the change of office, Žmavc said he did not plan any major changes at the Office for Slovenians Abroad. But said that he would like to boost economic cooperation with the diaspora, also through closer collaboration with other government departments. As part of these efforts he plans to seek the diaspora's help in attracting investors to Slovenia. "Slovenians can be the biggest promoters of our economy," Žmavc said. He first plans to visit Slovenian minorities in the neighbouring countries, suggesting the visits would not be just a formality but would focus on concrete solutions. Tina Komel agreed economic cooperation and the young generation came as key priorities. "Unless we have young people in our Slovenian organisations and societies, these will unfortunately become extinct," she said. Listing her achievements, Komel mentioned the creation of a Slovenian business incubator in Trieste, a reading room in Munich, Slovenian language lessons at several schools, especially in Croatia, and good cooperation with Slovenian organisations and local authorities abroad. Vir: USZS V __ Zmavc to Reform Financing for Slovenian Diaspora 17. 3. 2014 Ljubljana - The Office for Slovenians Abroad will aspire for the Slovenian minority in Italy and Austria to get representative bodies, as well as aim to reform the system of funding for the Slovenian diaspora, Minister for Slovenians Abroad Gorazd Žmavc announced on Monday. The funds earmarked for Slovenians abroad will be distributed more selectively from now on, Žmavc told the press and added that the funds will go to the projects which will prove to be better structured and will not only be based on old patterns. The youth remains a top priority for the office, said the minister and noted that their main strategic objectives include developing Slovenian identity through language, culture, education and science as well as securing funds for associations of the Slovenians abroad. Establishing joint representative bodies in Italy and Austria is important to Žmavc, who feels that these bodies are a way of connecting the minority community to the mother country. Otherwise, the Office for Slovenians Abroad also intends on connecting local businesses to Slovenian managers abroad and coordinating operations of institutions for Slovenians abroad. Created by Adrian Vatovec Pahor Optimistic About Future of Slovenian Minorities 20. 2. 2014, STA President Borut Pahor hosted Thursday a reception for members of the Slovenian minority in Austria, Croatia, Hungary and Italy to mark the recent Slovenian Culture Day. The president expressed an optimistic view of the future of the minorities, saying things were getting better and problems were turning into opportunities. Pahor said that areas touching on the minorities in general saw headway being made over the past years. "Problems are turning more into opportunities than the other way around," the president said. He pointed to what he called "historical European flow" which goes towards eliminating borders, uniting nations and building a Europe of coexistence and multiculturalism. He stressed he was a believer in the idea of a united Europe, one that prevents the continent from returning to geopolitics of yesteryear. Pahor also said that Slovenia had become "much more committed to its main mission, that is to preserve the Slovenian identity in a way that (the minorities) see fit in their environment and among their and our people". The Slovenian state is also much less patronizing, he added. But changes have also occurred at the level of minorities, Pahor went on. The minorities now understand that what we need is more cooperation and less old ideological prejudices, he said. Representatives of the minorities also struck relatively optimistic tones and expressed gratitude for the help from the home country. However, Darko Šonc of the Association of Slovenian Societies in Croatia was more pessimistic, saying that their member organisations were having trouble attracting younger generations despite well-crafted "marketing campaigns". He stressed the need for an "action plan for the future", in which a multidisciplinary panel of experts would advise the minorities what to do. The president organises the reception for the minorities every year around the 8 February, the Slovenian Culture Day. This year, the event was postponed due to the Olympics. Sochi Olympics: Slovenia Exceeded All Expectations 23 Feb 2014 / By STA, T. M. As the curtain falls on the Sochi Olympics, Slovenia can look back gleefully on the most successful winter games in history. Eight medals, more than in six previous winter games combined, including two golds, mark an apex for Slovenian winter sports. Eight medals is arguably a tally that few expected before the games began two weeks ago though many may have wished it. Tina Maze achieved the peak of her career with golds in downhill and giant slalom, the only accolades missing in her illustrious collection of achievements. Ski jumper Peter Prevc, only 21 and already a winner of a silver and a bronze medal, showed he has got the kind of nerves typically associated with much more seasoned athletes. Snowboarder Žan Košir is the third member of the team to have won two medals, with one each added by cross country skier Vesna Fabjan and biathlete Teja Gregorin, who plans to retire soon. Indeed, Slovenia was the second most successful country in the Olympics in terms of medals per capita, edged only by Norway. Add to that another 19 top-ten finishes and the small nation's feat becomes even more impressive. Sochi was the first winter Olympics to feature a Slovenian team, and the ice hockey players exceeded all expectations. Drawn into a "group of death" with the United States, Russia and Slovakia, they defied all expectations by beating Slovakia in the group competition and then defeating Austria to qualify for the quarter finals. Seventh place overall is a truly impressive achievement for a country with only a handful of clubs and fewer than 200 registered players. The success led to an unprecedented wave of cheering in Slovenia, providing a welcome break amidst the bleak reality of economic depression. Janez Kocjančič, the retiring head of the Slovenian Olympic Committee, said Sochi was "by far the most successful Olympics for us." "We were right in saying that we are heading to Sochi with the strongest team ever. We've placed in the group of the most successful winter-sport nations," he said as the games closed. Petra Majdič, the head of the Slovenian team, hopes the success will motivate people to take up sport. "I hope people go out and start doing sport. Our athletes have shown that there is a beautiful energy in sport. In kako nagrajujejo svoj ponos v tujini? *** Laufaiji, Cerkno, Slovenia *** Tina Maze, The Pop Star Who Won Gold In The Olympic Downhill, Is Skiing's Biggest Badass February 13, 2014 Tina Maze is the most interesting woman in skiing. She won the gold medal in the downhill in a historic tie at the Olympics on Wednesday. The 30-year-old from Slovenia is one of the more volatile figures in the sport. She destroyed everyone in the 2012-13 World Cup season, earning twice as many points as anyone else in the overall standings. She has also been a source of controversy throughout the years. In 2012 the Swiss team filed an official protest against her over the full-body underwear that she wore under her suit at a World Cup race in Austria. They claimed that the aerodynamic underwear gave her an unfair competitive advantage. She responded by writing, "NOT YOUR BUSINESS" on her sports bra and flashing it after her run at the next race: In December of 2012, Maze's team got in a dust-up with Lindsey Vonn. They claimed Vonn yelled an expletive at Maze after she crossed the finish line, and filed an official protest. The protest was rejected outright, but the relationship the two has remained testy. Maze celebrates like a professional wrestler after her runs. The cartwheel is her go-to move: Playing her ski like a guitar: Off the mountain, Maze is the most famous Olympians in Slovenia, partly because of her status as a pop star. Her 2012 song "My Way is My Decision" hit No. 1 on the Slovenian music charts. The music video for it is quite something: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53D_Oghkntg She also has a line of jewelry. Her personal life is hot topic as well. She's currently dating the head of her support team, 46-year-old Italian Andrea Massi. In the middle of a sluggish 2013-14 season on the World Cup circuit, she and Massi fired her coach and hired a new one. She has now regained her form, just in time for the biggest event of the year. 600th anniversary of the last enthronement of the Dukes of Carinthia 600 years have elapsed since the last enthronement of the Dukes of Carinthia on Gosposvetsko polje (Zollfeld). The Prince's Stone The enthronement of the Dukes of Carinthia was a special feudal rite originating from the ancient enthronement of the Dukes of Carantania and continued until 1414. The last to be enthroned by a peasant was Duke Ernest the Iron. The ceremony, dating from the late Middle Ages, when it was first documented, was conducted in the following way: the enthronement took place on a hill named Krnski grad (Karnburg), where a peasant mounted the Prince's Stone and before him appeared a new Duke wearing rustic dress. After receiving affirmative responses in Slovenian to the questions of whether the Duke was worthy of becoming a ruler, the peasant surrendered the Prince's Stone to him and symbolically handed over power. The second part of the ceremony was then held in the church of San Maria in Solio, where the new Duke received blessings at the mass; its third part continued at the Prince's Stone at Zollfeld, where the Duke bestowed the fiefs. The part of the ceremony held at the Prince's Stone drew particular attention since it completely differed from the then customaryfeudal investiture. Tinkara Kovač to Represent Slovenia at Eurosong Society, 09 Mar 2014 / By STA, T. M. Singer and flautist Tinkara Kovač will be the 20th musician to represent Slovenia at the Eurovision song contest, taking the pop tune "Spet/Round and Round" to Copenhagen in May. The song, which was selected as Slovenia's entry to Eurovision in a televised competition on Saturday, was written by Kovač and Hannah Mancini, Slovenia's representative at last year's Eurosong. Kovač, at 35-year-old a veteran of the Slovenian pop scene, beat out six other entries on the EMA show hosted by public broadcaster RTV Slovenija. She was selected the winner in two rounds of phone voting, after yesterday's finalists were selected by a panel of judges consisting of head of the EMA competition Miša Molk, musician and producer Andrea F. and two-times Eurovision contestant Darja Švajger. Slovenia will compete against Macedonia, Finland, Ireland, Romania, Belarus, Greece and Switzerland in the semi-finals on 8 May. Kovač has long been a part of the Slovenian music scene, debuting in a kids show at the age of nine. Her first album "Ne odhajaj poletje" was released in 1997, which she has followed up with seven more studio albums since. During her career, Kovač has worked with a number of international musicians including Ian Anderson and his band Jethro Tull. Here is the video link for Spet/Round and Round http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqZCwYSDLJo Slovenia a top destination for 2014 Slovenia is one of the most desirable destinations for 2014, according to the publishing house behind the "Rough Guide" traveler guides. Slovenia was listed as one of the top five countries in the world. Rough Guide noted that the country got a lot of love from its readers. One wrote that Slovenia was one of the most spectacular and beautiful places in the world. Another said they couldn't begin to "grasp how beautiful the country is." The other four countries included Chile, Malaysia, Wales and Pakistan. The Slovenian language has dozens of dialects Even though the Slovenian language is one of the smallest Slavic languages, it's one of the most diverse in terms of dialects. This exceptional variety in such a geographically limited area means that speech patterns sometimes differ from village to village. It also means that Slovenian speakers often have trouble understanding dialects from another part of the country. Even linguists don't agree precisely how many dialects of Slovenian there are. Most believe that there are close to 50. Whatever the exact number, the dialects are typically classified into eight regional groups - and the differences between each group are substantial. There are dialects that have no neuter gender, dialects that use masculine forms for females, dialects that have some characteristics typical of Croatian, dialects that have features of the West Slavic languages, a dialect that still uses the Old Slavic aorist tense, dialects that pronounce the letter G as H, dialects that transform all Ls into Us or Ws, dialects that sound almost Italian, dialects influenced by Hungarian, and so on. In part, this hodgepodge of dialects is a result of Slovenia's mountainous terrain, which had long hindered communication between various towns and regions. It also reflects the political fragmentation of the Slovenian lands throughout history; Slovenian speakers were split among several Hapsburg crown provinces, and unique forms of the colloquial language emerged in each of them. In fact, when Primož Trubar consolidated the Slovenian language in the 16th century, he borrowed elements from various Slovenian dialects, and combined those elements with his native Lower Carniolan dialect, to create the first form of the written Slovenian language. Today, standard Slovenian, the descendant of Trubar's creation, serves as a lingua franca of sorts for people from different parts of the country. If it weren't for the standard, the diversity of dialects would often make communication difficult. When some of the more obscure dialects are aired on Slovenian television, only subtitling ensures that other Slovenians understand them. Jaka Bartolj *** Hello, everyone! 2. Na koledarju označite datum, kdaj boste nehali kaditi. Družinske člane in prijatelje obvestite o svojem namenu, tako boste bolj motivirani. 3. 4. Poiščite dražilce: kdaj prižgete cigareto in zakaj? Slovenija vključena v Google Street View 30.01.2014 | Delo Google bo še letos izvedel prva posebna projekta: notranjost predsedniške palače in fotografiranje smučišč. Znotraj uličnega pogleda so določene posebne znamenitosti, denimo stadioni, smučišča, stolpnice in podobno. Foto: Google Street View (screenshot) Google Launches Street View Service for Slovenia 30 Jan 2014 / By STA US internet giant Google launched Thursday the Street View service for Slovenia, the 55th country to be included in the application offering 360-degree imagery of streets and tourist sites. The service was launched in Slovenia six months after the company began photographing the country with its fleet of camera-equipped cars, focusing mostly on cities and major tourist sites. Street View program manager Ulf Spitzer said that given Slovenia's small size, the imaging process did not take long, although he admitted that not all places were captured. The service is expected to be upgraded later with imagery from Slovenian ski resorts as well as from some of the halls of the presidential palace in Ljubljana. The service offered by the US giant was hailed by Education Minister Jernej Pikalo, who said that it was an important tool also for educational purposes. "It is one thing if a teacher tells you something, but another if he can show it to you in an interactive way," Pikalo said. Slovenia believes street view has important value for tourism purposes, head of the tourism department at the SPIRIT tourism and investment promotion agency Karmen Novarlič told the press. A better web presence can only help increase the number of tourists of Slovenia, said Novarlič, who added that it was also important that Slovenia finds ways of tapping into the tool as part of reaching out to tourists. Slovenia's Digital Champion Aleš Spetič meanwhile lamented how long it took to introduce the service for Slovenia. He said that Slovenia must strive to ensure that, come the next Google tool, it is among the first countries to be included. The imaging of Slovenian streets was delayed by more than two years due to privacy concerns raised by the country's information commissioner. The main sticking point between the company and Information Commissioner Nataša Pirc Musar was where the raw images of its recordings would be processed. The service has been the subject of privacy debates in other European countries. Paving the way to the service in Slovenia was deal was struck early last year between Google and Slovenia's information commissioner, as part of which Google accepted a broad set of safeguards, from clear public announcements to blurring of faces and license plates. *** Intelligence test Can you work it out? Laibach Out with New Album, Tour 27 Feb 2014 / By STA, T. M. Laibach, arguably Slovenia's most internationally acclaimed band, will release their latest album, dubbed Spectre, on Monday with Mute. The group, founded in 1980 in the industrial city of Trbovlje, crosses genres, dabbing in heavy industrial sound as well as symphonic takes on military music and electronica. Kaj pravi Sveto pismo o denarju in bogastvu? (...) In spet vam povem: Laže gre kamela skozi šivankino uho, kakor bogataš pride v Božje kraljestvo." Slovenian Tourism Introducing Storytelling Marketing 17 Feb 2014 / By STA, T. M. Slovenian tourism aims to adopt first-person storytelling marketing campaigns as one of its strategic guidelines for 2014 and 2015 in a bid to replace traditional one-way communication with uninspiring slogans and promotional texts. This is a tool which helps create tourist products of a higher added value, enables more efficient marketing and strengthens the tourism brand, the SPIRIT agency for the promotion of entrepreneurship, investment and tourism has said. The project dubbed "Stories in Slovenian Tourism" is getting increasingly recognised as an important marketing tool, while the concrete work in its implementation is only getting started, according to the agency. Slovenian tourism officials believe that Slovenia is rich with stories about tourism which also have marketing potential, but that they are not sufficiently connected with tourism products. Storytelling is an efficient tool for marketing tourist destinations, products, sights and providers. The price-quality ratio is no longer a decisive factor, tourists want products which offer a unique experience, according to SPIRIT. The main story about Slovenia supports, explains and expands the existing "I feel sLOVEnia" trademark and presents Slovenia as a green, active and healthy destination. A number of workshops related to the topic will be organised by SPIRIT this year. *** Social Media for Professionals Find Slovenian professional and business connections on the internet at Linkedln - www.linkedin.coin/ Linked F^ Krka Overtakes Gorenje as Biggest Exporter 24 Mar 2014 / By STA, T.
