Genevieve Drobnič talks about the Slovenian Cultural Garden Slovenians agree to fix Cultural Garden Jadran invites everyone to 75th Anniversary concert Representatives from most Greater Cleveland Slovenian organizations met on Thursday, Oct. 19 in the Kenik Room of the Slovenian National Home on St. Clair. They were in agreement that something must be done to improve the Slovenian image in the Cultural Gardens along Martin Luther King Drive in Cleveland. This year the name of the former “Yugoslav Gardens” was changed to “The Slovenian Cultural Garden.” The change came about through the efforts of Genevieve Drobnič working through the American Slovene Club, and Richard Konisiewicz, President Cleveland Cultural Garden Federation. The Gardens program has the blessing and support of Cleveland Mayor, Michael White, who lives in the area. Gene reported that other nationalities are working on their gardens as a showcase for the City’s big celebration next year. She said only she and few others have been cleaning up the area, but there is not much left in the gardens. “Let’s face it, some major work must be done. It should be a showcase for ALL Slovenian people, but instead right now, it’s an eyesore.” In the 1920s the entire area along the boulevard was left to the city to be maintained as a permanent park. Gene says the Slovenians have a prime location, consisting of about two acres. Anton Grdina was one of the driving forces behind the entire program and served as president for a number of years. Now, however, a prime concern has been vandalism. Cleveland Police Lt. Thomas Tube has been assigned to keep the area patrolled. But he noted, sadly, it is not a priority, due to more serious crime that at times call officers away. Those in attendance were surprised when Lt. Tube said planted flowers and bushes were often stolen in the spring. “The thieves replant them in their yard or sell them. Some think anything growing in a park is for their personal use.” It was suggested to either refurbish the Slovenian Gardens, or come up with an entirely new architectural landscape plan. Other ideas were to have new statues made of granite or fiberglass instead of bronze. Slovenia’s Honorary Consul in Cleveland, Dr. Karl Bonut-ti, thanked Gene Drobnič for her efforts in keeping the Slovenian Gardens going all these years, and said the Slovenian government is interested in the restoration project and will offer support. Most people in attendance felt the Slovenian Gardens should be a showcase for Slovenian-Americans to take pride in showing the cultural achievements of their nationality to the world. Fr. John Kumse volunteered to be on a permanent committee. The entire group will meet again at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 30 at St. Mary’s. Goulash Dinner A goulash/polenta dinner, sponsored by Saint Mary (Coll.) Holy Name Society will be held in the school cafeteria on Saturday, Nov. 4. Donation is $5. Lausche with an 11 a.m. Mass in St. Vitus church, followed by a brunch in the auditorium. Guest speaker will be George V. Voinovich, the Governor of Ohio. Principal celebrant of the Mass will be the esteemed Bishop A. Edward Pevec. Frank J. Lausche was born in the St. Clair area across the street from St. Vitus where he was baptized and attended school. Lausche was a judge, Mayor of Cleveland, five times elected Ohio governor, and served two terms in the United States Senate. Tickets for the brunch are $10.00 and may be reserved by calling St. Vitus office at 361-1444 or American Home at 431-0628. No tickets will be sold at the door. Sending get-well wishes to Valerie Traska, who also had major surgery. This is truly a milestone for our Jadran family, and we thank you all in advance, for all the many years of your support. Many of our members are gone and we do miss them. I know they would be very proud of Jadran for existing this long. As long as you continue to support us, we will continue to perpetuate our cultural heritage. —Dolores Dobida Left to right, Tom Zlatoper, parents Joe and Ann Zlatoper, and Admiral Ron Zlatoper on Sunday, Oct. 15 at the Slovenian American Heritage Foundation’s “Slovenski Večer” in the Slovenian National Home on St. Clair Ave. (Photo by Tony Grdina) AMERIŠKA DOMOVINA, OCTOBER 26, 1995 2 Jim’s Journal by Jim Debevec Have you ever been really scared? I have. Very early one Saturday morning last winter I came into the computer set-up room where our fax is also located. It is on 24-hours a day. As I passed it, I noticed a sheet of paper on top printed in big, bold, black ink. Didn’t pay too much attention because we often receive advertisements at night, and the printing looked familiar. However, as I passed it, my mind registered the heading, which was “Heavenly Fax.” By this time I was a few steps past the machine, but never-the-less was quickly reading the first line which said “FROM: JOSEPH MELAHER; TO FATHER BOŽNAR.” I paused in mid-stride, instantly realizing that my friend, Mr. Melaher had passed away a year previously and he had jokingly told Father Božnar that if there were any way possible, he would send him a fax from heaven. My mind all of a sudden registered: “He’s done it; we’ve gotten a message from heaven.” I felt goosebumps form on my toes; they traveled to the middle of my foot, to the heels, up my legs, to my waist, to my finger-tips, to my arms, chest, shoulders, up my neck and literally made my hair on top of my head stand straight up. I was in total shock. I immediately walked to the wash-room and looked in the mirror at my hair. I honest-to-goodness thought it had turned completely white. To my amazement, it hadn’t; I recovered and picked up the fax, then realized that someone had remembered the promise Mr. Melaher had made to Fr. Božnar in the hospital, and wrote a clever story about the possibility of what was going on in heaven and all of his Slovenian friends he had met there — and some who were ominously absent. That happened nine months ago, and to this day, my heart is still beating like the blades of a climbing helicopter whenever I think about the incident. Have you ever been really scared? Well, that’s a terrific idea. But instead of singling our two deserving individuals, this week we’re going to honor “ALL Slovenian volunteers”. To the volunteers at Slovenian Homes, churches, concerts, old-age homes, fundraising dinners, singers, dancers, actors, floor-sweepers, transporters, craft-spersons, teachers, clergy, etc.: — This is your week. You are duly saluted for your generous contributions in keeping the Slovenian-heritage from dissolving, and helping others less fortunate. Our Slovenian traditions and culture cannot survive without your bountiful and unselfish contribution. The survival of our free society, and the comfort of our Slovenian people are dependent upon your graciousness and indebted to your lofty mission in life. Congratulations! YOU deserve it! This was a late afternoon flight, so 80% was during the night time, consequently we were wined and dined. The pilot announced we were carrying 330,000 pounds (165 tons) of fuel. Take-off speed was at 200 miles per hour, cruising at 37,000 feet (7.1 miles) at 560 miles per hour. The outside temperature was at minus 40°, flying time 7 hours, 15 minutes. It should be a smooth flight with no turbulence. The Captain’s First Officer was a woman pilot who would land us in Glasgow on time. These statistics are routine for all who fly a lot, but it fascinates me enough to write about. — Our return flight was during the day and the pilot announced the most unusual clear weather and Greenland was ever so clear. Icebergs were scattered all over the ocean; it was a magnificent sight. I felt a little uneasy when a hundred or so people hugged the right side of the plane for a look-see. Our landing was very rough in Chicago as I left the plane and passing the pilots, I said, jokingly, “Thank you for the nice safe flight, but who landed the ship, one of the stewardesses?” They responded, also jokingly, but probably thought “What a smart (bleep) that old-jock was.” But they got the message I’m sure. Sometimes you wonder if that after dinner drink they give you includes one for the pilots. Anyhow, we landed in Scotland at 10 a.m. and Globus Tours were there to take us to the Jury Pond Hotel. At 2 p.m., an orientation drive through Glasgow with 12th century cathedral university buildings, elegant Georgian squares, built by the wealthy tobacco barons. There was ship-building on the Clyde River where the “Queens” were built. A short visit to one of the world’s finest Burrell Art Exhibitions. — A welcome dinner at the hotel and a toast to happy touring with a nice group, tour director and bus driver. Next we saw the Scottish Highlands and along the Bonnie Banks of Loch (lake) Lomond. On to Glen Coe where the MacDonalds were treacherously massacred by the Campbells. It seems all of the history we heard of Great Britain was this clan taking over the other clans, capturing their castles or destroying them. A spectacular afternoon drive along the Caledonian Capital, Fort William, beneath “Ben News,’’ Britain’s highest mountain, a visit to a local woolen mill which was very interesting. Every day was a learning experience: How Scotch whiskey was made and we sampled the whiskey made from converting barley, water and yeast into a heart-warming liquor. The highways or I should say narrow country roads, the bus had to stop around sharp curves for passing cars and other buses. Prince Philip was in the area fishing and his car had to stop and turn into a siding to allow us to pass. Those on the bus sitting on that side saw him. This area was hilly or low mountains 2,500/3,400 feet. This was the sports area with fishing, hunting and skiing and winter sports. There were beautiful Scottish pine and lush green trees, with stone walls in the surrounding pastureland for sheep and cattle. One can’t describe the number of sheep and cattle grazing in Scotland, England, Wales, Ireland and North Ireland. A tourist wouldn’t know what country they were in because of the similarity. Sheep and cattle are probably the second largest income produced in Great Britain. — These stone walls are interesting, first of all stones, are very plentiful and neatly piled without any morter and they go on for miles and miles. Some have been standing for hundreds of years. This is before fencing was invented. In some of the newer localities, posts and heavy wire fencing replaced the beautiful old-fashioned border lines. On Sunday, Oct. 22, Sandy (Pestotnik) Eckart ran in the 20th Annual Marine Corps Marathon which is a 26 mile, 385 yard course around Washington, D.C. Cheering Sandy on to the finish line were her husband, former U.S. Congressman Dennis E. Eckart, now with Arter & Hadden law firm, and their 16-year-old son, Eddy; his grandparents, Ed and Mitz Eckart; Uncle Frank and Aunt Ron Gerjevic. Joining them were Sandy’s proud parents, John and Beatrice Pestotnik, and her sister Marcia. Her other sister Linda Cimperman, family and friends were back in Cleveland supporting her with prayers and positive thoughts for Sandy to cross the marathon finish line. Each year a greater number of participants join in the race. Subsequently the marathon is also known as the “People’s Marathon.” This year, 16,200 runners participated. The U.S. Marine Corps Band charged the runners with musical energy at the opening of the race. At certain points along the way, friends and family of the runners, with area high school bands, helped rally the runner’s spirit with their screams of good wishes and music. Running the marathon takes strong spirit, healthy diet, and months of training to build up sufficient strength. It is a real challenge, and requires sincere commitment! Congratulations to everyone who ran in the “Marine Corps Marathon,” but most especially, we are proud of Sandy, the granddaughter of immigrants from the Republic of Slovenia. Linda Cimperman Glasbena Matica Concert Once again Glasbena Matica is presenting their Fall Concert at the Slovenian National Home, 6409 St. Clair Avenue on Saturday, Nov. 4 under direction of Tom Weiss, and accompanist Reginald Resnik. Doors open at 5 p.m., cocktails, the delicious hors d’oeuvres and pastries prepared by Mary Blatnik will be served from 6 to 7. Concert starts at 7 p.m., followed by social and dancing to Fred Ziwich orchestra. We realize the busy cultural city of Cleveland keeps us very occupied, but with a little extra effort from all of us, we can fill up the auditorium. I felt as though I had won the lottery. Many of your faithful readers sent cards, called, and stopped to tell me how much they enjoyed the article. Years ago I had written articles for the paper, always thinking some day I’ll make the front page. I’m certain you know the feeling. It was inoperable, they said, and 1 had maybe three months to live. It was a week before Christmas, and I had flown to the hospital, one of the best in the country, instead of going home for the holidays. The seasonal gaiety made the bleak news seem even more surreal, harder to absorb. That the diagnosis came from such a reputable institution made it even harder to deny. How did I react? First I went back to the hotel and ate every cinnamon bun in the coffee shop. Then I took stock of my life. 1 was 34 and writing the first important book of my career: a biography of the artist Jackson Pollock. Strangely I was far more distressed at the prospect of not finishing the manuscript — I was halfway through it — than at the prospect of not finishing my life — which, I had assumed, was about halfway through. Later that day I realized I was being a fool. The news was wrong. Not the part about the tumor — I had seen the scans myself. What was wrong was the death sentence. They said I had three months. But what did that mean? Was it like the expiration date on a carton of milk? If I didn’t get left out too long, might I last longer? As I was medicating my depression with the tranquilizer of television, it hit me. A weatherman said with an apologetic smile, “Better brjng out those unbrellas tomorrow.” What was my umbrella for this strange, murderous tumor? I would start by finding the best doctors in the country — in the world — for my problem. I didn’t care about the prestige of the hospital where they worked or where they had gone to school or what VIPs they had treated. All I cared about was finding doctors who had dealt with cases like mine. That’s when The Best Doctors in America was born. I started contacting top doctors nationwide and asked them to vote on the best practitioners in their specialties. Every time a promising name turned up, I was on the phone, or on a plane, or my scans went in my place: to Australia for an expert in vascular tumors; to Sweden for a radiosurgeon; to Israel for a neurosurgeon; plus dozens of domestic destinations, coast to coast. Finally I found Dr. Sadek Hilal, a neuroradiologist in New York City who recommended embolization, a technique for shrinking vascular tumors. A few weeks after the procedure, scans showed a 50-percent reduction in the size of the tumor — enough to reverse most of the paralysis and allow me to finish the Pollock book, which went on to win the Pulitzer prize for biography. But because the tumor was still there, the time eventually came for major surgery. Fortunately, in the five years since that awful Christmas, tremendous advances in surgical techniques had rendered my once “inoperable” brain tumor miraculously “operable” — at least in the hands of the right surgeon. I already had his name: Dr. Vinko Dolenc at the University of Virginia. A native of Slovenia, Dolenc had performed more operations in the region of the brain where my tumor was than any other surgeon in the world. He had developed the procedure for gaining access to this inaccessible area through dissections on hundreds of cadavers and a number of live patients as well — almost all of whom lived to thank him. I turned out to be one of them. My experience has taught me that “miracles” in medicine always start with the right doctor. I also know from personal experience that searching for this person is an arduous task. And when the illness is life-threatening, when the temptation for denial and the urge to emotional surrender are strongest, that search can seem impossible and pointless. No wonder so few Americans take advantage of the choice of doctors available to them — even when their insurance policies permit it. But for anyone who is given a death sentence and refuses to die, there is always a chance. Even if the street is momentarily empty of traffic, rarely does anyone jaywalk. When the green ‘Walk’ sign appears, people cross. The Slovenians are similar in character to their Alpine neighbors, the Swiss and the Austrians. They are orderly, precise, respectful of rules, hard-working and productive. Slovenia has a population of only 2 million. Yet the country’s export earnings are nearly half those of Poland, another booming Central European economy with 38.6 million citizens. Incredible, isn’t it? Slovenia has developed an economy in a region of developing economies. It is peaceful in a region where the break-up of the Yugoslav Federation led to tragic conflicts. This year its currency, the tolar, appreciated alongside the German mark because the Slovenian economy, though small, is robust. Anyone interested in manufacturing a product or selling services in Central Europe should be looking at Slovenia. Early this year the government of Slovenia lowered the tax on profits to a maximum of 25% — one of the lowest corporate tax rates in Europe. The move sent a clear signal to the international business community: we want foreign investment and cooperation. “We are strongly involved in foreign trade and nearly all Slovenian firms are looking for foreign partners,” says Vojka Ravbar, state secretary for foreign economic relations, and one of the top women in government service anywhere in Central Europe. “They need foreign partners to develop new technology, new markets, and, as with all capital, to make greater profits.” Coca-Cola and Microsoft are among the multinationals that made recent investments in Slovenia. “What’s important to us now is not so much the date when Slovenia will become a full member of the European Union,” explains Jožef Drofenik, Slovenia’s deputy chief negotiator with the EU, “but that we fully prepare our economy, our legislation, and our trade for that event.” Slovenia’s post-socialist recovery has been astounding. In 1994, only three years after Slovenia declared its independence, GDP grew by 5%. Productivity increased by 5% and industrial production by 6.4% Exports rose by 12%. Foreign exchange reserves stood at over $3 billion, one of the highest levels per capita in the world. “Ours is a developed economy,” says Marko Voljč, president and CEO of Nova Ljubljanska banks, “but it’s also a small economy which is very open. So far, we’ve seen only the sunny side of world trade. When Germany’s GDP rises by 2%, for example, ours almost automatically rises twice as much. What happens to us if Europe goes into recession? Within a few years I’m confident that Slovenia will have increased its production base and diversified its markets. For us, the huge North American market is a very important complement to the EU, and we hope American executives will see Slovenia as a point of entry for various European markets, and the Ukraine and southern Russia as well.” Attitudes are changing. “The previous system didn’t encourage individual initiative,” says Rudi Tavčar, 36. With two partners he founded a private market research organization, Oral, in 1989. “People of my generation are willing to use their own money and work long hours to start a business.” For historical reasons, the Slovenian government didn’t rush into privatization. After breaking with Moscow in 1948, Marshal Tito introduced a variation of orthodox marxism known as Yugoslav self-management. An enterprise was not owned by the state, as it was in Russia and China, but by the managers and workers. “Under self-management, people were persuaded they owned the companies where they worked,” says Drofenik. “If the government had tried to sell these companies people would have said, “This is ours! Who has the right to sell our company?” Slovenia’s two-step privatization process has taken a bit longer, but this is the payoff year. The country’s best firms, already selling their goods on the highly competitive European market, smoothly switched to a free market system through management by-outs or straight sale to foreign multinationals. Less efficient firms had a high debt, so the government swapped their debt for stock which is held by a Development Fund. The Fund itself is a profit center. Its goal is to restructure the firms and sell them. Last December, for example, Coca-Cola Amatil of Australia bought a 50% stake in the IBP bottling plant from the Development Fund. Employees are buying the other 50%, though Coca-Cola’s share is expected to increase soon. Since most of the 1,350 firms being privatized are small, the Law on Ownership Transformation, which went into effect late in 1992, facilitated self-privatization. “The decision makers in our privatization process,” explains Anton Rop, state secretary for privatization, “have been management teams and employees. Our emphasis has been on decentralization.” Bearing in mind that Yugoslav self-management was an unorthodox form of marxism, many Slovenian firms were highly competitive even before the fall of socialism. The white goods manufacturer Gorenje is an example. Twenty years ago the self-managed firm sold 35% of its refrigerators, stoves, washing machines and driers to the domestic Yugoslav market. West Europeans now buy most of the firm’s output. Gorenje exports 95% of its appliances. Last year 73,980 vehicles were assembled at the Revoz plant. The turnover was three quarters of a billion dollars. Renault acquired majority control of Revoz on January 1, 1992 and ships the cars to dealers in Austria, France, Italy, Germany, Spain and ihe Another high-quality manufacturer is Lek, 99% Slovenian owned and a successful medium-sized manufacturer of pharmaceutical products. Lek was one of the first large Slovenian firms to be privatized. Vojka Ravbar said, “In some of our companies the technological level is already very high. Our goal is to set higher and higher standards,” she continues. “We know they’re attainable because the level of education in Slovenia is very high. Most of our companies are already competitive on the world market.” Thanks to Joe Paik of Euclid, Ohio for submitting this informative article which was re-routed from son Dick Gričar of Houston, TX, who received it from Phil Gleiber-man of California. 22595 LAKE SHORE BLVD. Editor: This month joyous celebrations exulting over the greatness of the United Nations will inundate us on its fiftieth anniversary. As if it were something to celebrate. While many Americans think that the UN is merely a collection of incompetent bunglers who can’t accomplish anything and, so, poses no threat to the United States, the UN is in reality more deeply involved in our domestic affairs than most people realize. In education, UNESCO, a UN-created educational bureaucracy, pushes sex-education courses in school curricula (even for kindergarten students), outcome-based education (OBE), and the Goals 2000 program (backed by President Clinton). Scores of American parents oppose these programs. In economics, the United States pays upwards of 25% of the UN’s bills. That same United States that doesn’t even have enough money to 9 balance its own budget. As for the family, currently pending before the Senate is the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, already signed by the president. Ratifying this treaty will set up government as the authority over all children, superseding the parents. I could list more examples. Suffice it to say that the UN’s influence over our country is significant. We should disentangle the U.S. from this body and get the UN out of the U.S. to preserve and restore a free, independent, sovereign America. We can start by contacting our senators and telling them to reject the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Then ask them to withdraw us from all UN alliances. Joseph M. Lucille Romih Cleveland, Ohio Breast Cancer Facts The following facts come through the efforts of Ohio’s first lady, Janet Voinovich: In Ohio, 2,000 women will die from breast cancer. This year, 182,000 women across the nation will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and 46,000 will die. In addition, approximately 1,400 men will develop breast cancer and 240 will die. Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths of women. All women are at risk; and one’s risk increases with age. 75% of all breast cancers occur in women with no known risk factors. Approximately 80% of the breast cancers occur in women 50 years and older. However, only 35% of the women in this age group follow the screening guidelines. The mortality rate would decrease by 30% if every woman over 50 was informed and followed breast cancer screening guidelines. Detection of breast cancer at an early stage provides a greater chance of cure and more treatment options. When the disease is confined to the breast, the five-year survival rate is 93%. However, there is no known cure for advanced breast cancer. ago. He was born in Cleveland and had spent most of his life in Euclid until he moved to South Russell 10 years ago. JOHN A. LIPOLD Staff Writer, Futures World News Growing up as a Slovene American in Cleveland in the 1970’s, it would have been difficult, if not impossible, for me to have escaped the influence of my heritage on most aspects of my life. Even as part of the third generation born in this country, nearly everything—family, church, friendships and peer groups— intertwined with the fact that I was a descendent of Slovene immigrants. When I think about my childhood, I can smell the apple strudel my grandmother used to make. 1 can hear the rhythm of the folk dance “Lepa Anka kolo vodi...” in my head. And I still get a feeling of awe sitting inside St. Vitus Church, which my grandparents and great-grandparents helped to build. But beside these aspects of my culture, there was something else that was passed on to me that I didn’t recognize until recently. An enduring symbol of the Slovene people is čebela — the honeybee. But you don’t have to travel to the apiary museum in Radovljica to know why this industrious little creature is their superb mascot. Just go to Ljubljana and you can talk to some of the most creative business people, writers and artists in the world. They’re working feverishly in their endeavors and they are creating a secure place for Slovenia in our global village. 1 think it is this work ethic that shows why a people so small in number has survived for 1,400 years in its corner of the Alps. The honeybee, moreover, is a symbol for those who emigrated to America over the last 100 years, most of whom came with nothing other than a strong back or, for a lucky few, an education. Many struggled in the mines and factories of the United States, helping build the economy and raising a generation of “American” children to whom they passed on the idea that you can’t get something for nothing. Some of these children made it to the upper echelons of United States politics on Capitol Hill. Others have become nationally known media personalities and actors. Others still professionals and artisans of every sort. At least on this side of the Atlantic, my generation faces a major challenge: how to preserve our heritage and identity when the old institutions, neighborhoods and other bonds fade. We are Americans; yes, we are. But let’s never forget that we come from a group of people who made a serious impact on this country. Because we’re from a small “tribe,” each of us must be ready to do a lot to keep alive our grandparents’ dreams and identity. As the renowned poet Tomaž Šalamun said: “This space will survive only by some tremendous effort of us all.” JOHN A. LIPOLD is a native of Cleveland, Ohio. After graduating in 1988from Ohio University with a B.A. degree in journalism, he earned an M.A. degree from the Department of West European Studies at Indiana University. He has traveled widely in Slovenia and Central Europe. Presently, he is a reporter for Futures World News, a financial newswire. He lives with his wife, Ann marie, in Washington, D.C. AMERIŠKA DOMOVINA, OCTOBER 26, 1995 12 L jubljana A wakens “Do you like me?” When I arrived in Ljubljana 20 years ago, the city replied to my hesitant request for affection like some tetchy old crone. “No! Leave me alone. Get lost. I want to be alone.” To tell the truth, my question was not totally honest either. Ljubljana did not want to show its attractive appearance to foreigners. It was early October and the abandoned facades peeked through a grey veil that had been untouched by human hands for decades. It was deliberately displaying its drab and worn out side, offering things which appeared to be used up and totally obsolete, as though it wanted to play the ignoramus. Everything nice that it had, it hid behind walls, covered up or moved to safety. No matter how hard you tried, you could never rest your gaze on a decent view between Ambrož Square, at one end of the city, and the Prule bridge at the other. When dusk fell and the lights had to be switched on, the streets still remained dark, doors were bolted, windows covered with curtains and you could roam for a couple of long hours under the castle hill without finding an open pub where you might be served mulled wine with a smile. Passers-by were never invited in by anyone, nothing flashed, enticed or was offered on the walls. The city was without a guiding hand. If you knew it well then you knew where you could find a pleasant hangout, but if you passed through by chance it never spoke to you. You could not even buy a decent tourist guide. Only the Jazz Festival broke the monotony for a few days once a year and sent some unorthodox noise into Napoleon Square. Once, on one of my first serious strolls through Ljubljana, I got lost near Židovska Street and missed the last bus to Šiška. It then began to pour for an eternity. Then, all of a sudden one spring mornng, Ljubljana became aware of its beauty. I don’t remember when this was exactly, some time at the beginning of the eighties, I think. At first it seemed that the American artist, Christo, had been commissioned to wrap some houses up in a sackcloth. Behind this, workers drilled and scraped, and here and there one could observe someone climbing with a tin of paint across the metal scaffolding. There was a tremendous commotion, as though a new performance was being prepared behind the curtains of a theater. Then the curtains rose and behind Cobbler’s Bridge, along the Ljubljanica shone a house with a freshly painted facade, a forged rail on a wooden balcony and light windows behind which real people lived. The -esplendent colors of the Vienna Secession popped up one after another on Miklošičeva Street. On Čopova Street the City Savings Bank once again beckoned from its splendid doorway, reminding one of the entrances to the Paris metro at the end of the last century. Behind the walls of Križanke, the former Teutonic Knights’ preceptory, where there is an outdoor concert auditorium, louder and louder music pealed out. Towards the evening violins began to echo in City Square. And the shops around the old post office were adorned with traveling musicians. The dismal buildings under the castle showed off the austerity of their Gothic foundations. Over the river the playful Baroque facades began to eye the mannerisms of the Franciscan church in Prešeren Square. The bridges and arcades designed by Plečnik once again found their rhythm. Through the decade more and more houses in the streets were renovated and the city slowly awoke from its streets. The most enticing view of life in the streets below can be seen from the large windows of the cafe at the top of the Nebotičnik (skyscraper) building on Slovenska Street, which was constructed in the twenties as a small-scale model of the tall edifices in Manhattan. The cafe is still awaiting better times, stil permeated with an old-fashioned air, but the view over the city balances out the sleepy service there, and the impractical furnishings. Downstairs the streets have found their guiding hand and every corner has become inviting. Not only have the shops freshly decorated their windows but they also display goods from around the world, including Singapore, Istanbul, New York and Amsterdam. The city has blossomed and everything that it had been concealing for decades has been brought to light again. Bojan Gorišek can be heard playing the piano in the Church of St. James, playing compositions by Erik Satie. In City Square, bars have opened up onto the streets and now sport wicker chairs. The National Gallery has been enlarged by an additional building and a proper museum quarter is slowly emerging around it. The music is not bashfully hiding behind closed doors but is forcing its way into the sunshine. The bookshops have become lively meeting places. The old barracks on Metelkova Street have metamorphosed into a giant bazaar of alternative music, even the fortress of the National University Library has allowed itself to open up a cafe and no longer frightens visitors. The Middle European discreetness of the city market is interrupted by melodic Vlediterranean speech, and on the lively banks of the Ljubljanica in summer it seems that the Adriatic Sea has also come to the city. Ljubljana has become a pleasant city for living in, and likes people more and more. The only old habit that has remained is that it likes to go to bed early. You have to know the city late in the evening, so that you remember which cellar to check out to hear jazz and rock, around which corner lurks an open bar and where the entertainment is; but some things should remain a secret. You can hardly get lost any more, for even the darkest streets are becoming lighter and lighter. Adria Airways In-Flight Magazine Are ambulance sirens and lights necessary? A siren shrieks, red lights flash, and you quickly pull over to let the ambulance rush by. An annoying interruption, but necessary to save time, right? Not always, says emergency physician Richard Hunt, of East Carolina University School of Medicine. In the first study of its kind, Hunt found that flashing lights and blaring sirens did little to speed ambulances’ trips to the emergency room. The finding has Hunt and other doctors worried that the warning signals may do more harm than good. Hunt clocked 50 ambulance rides in Greenville (population 46,000), from accident scene to hospital. Then he sent ambulances out to drive the same routes at the same time of day — but obeying traffic signals, and without lights and sirens. The noisy ambulances arrived just 43 seconds earlier, on average. In nearly all cases, Hunt says, the difference is meaningless. Also, by one estimate, lights and sirens cause or contribute to as many as 72,000 crashes a year, either by spurring emergency drivers to take risks or by startling nearby drivers. It was further suggested that warning signals on ambulances be used only for the most urgent medical emergencies: gunshot wounds, for instance, or heart attacks. — or coffee at a nearby McDonalds. »Who’s Who of Slovene Descent in the United States« Letošnjo pomlad je v ameriški ustanovi Society for Slovene Studies v New Yorku izšla druga, dopolnjena izdaja zanimive publikacije o emigrantih slovenskega rodu v ZDA. Znana slovenska znanstvenika dr. Rado L. Lenček, slavist in etnograf, in dr. Jože Velikonja, geograf in demograf, sta iz globoke potrebe po medsebojnem spoznavanju in zbliževanju zbrala blizu štiristo slovenskih osebnosti, ki so se kakorkoli uveljavile v velikem ameriškem svetu, zbrala ob slehernem imenu poglavitne življenjske podatke, zlasti glede izobrazbe in službovanja, morebitnega publiciranja, če gre za znanstvenike, pa naslov in telefonsko številko. Podatke so preverjali v knjigi zajeti posamezniki in imajo zaradi tega težo verodostojnosti. Who of Slovene descent in Argentina. Na »Slovenskem večeru« z admiralom Ronaldom Zlato-perjem 15. oktobra sta Dušan in Mary Maršič v imenu Slovensko ameriškega kulturnega sveta izročila šopka admiralu in njegovi ženi Barry. Madeline D. in g. Bog in škof Slomšek naj vsem bogato povrneta. Prepričan sem, da se bo škof dr. Franc Kramberger v kratkem sam vsem zahvalil. Do zdaj smo poslali $10.000. Upamo, da bomo dosegli vsoto 20 tisoč dolarjev, kar si niti mislili nismo, ko smo nabirko začeli. Od zadnjič so darovali: $2.000: The Frances and Jane S. Vsem najlepša hvala! Stari so odmirali. V cerkvi ob pol osmih nam bo pel Domžalski komorni zbor. Ko pridem precej pred 6. uro zvečer k Sv. Cirilu, domžalskih pevcev in pevk tam še ni. (nadaljevanje s sir. ZDA so izrazita ekonomska dežela. 1994 Leto dni Te zemlja krije, v temnem grobu mirno spiš. Ne samo Who’s Who of Slovene descent in the United States, vse je treba zbrati, vse. Vodlanovih slik. Vse mize so bile zasedene. Tone Osovnik Vladimir M. Rus Attorney ■ Odvetnik 6411 St. Clair (Slovenian National Home) Peterle, Slovenija in Evropa Govor predsednika SKD Lojzeta Peterleta na 6. taboru SKD v Celju, 15. oktobra 1995 Spoštovane gospe in gospodje, člani in simpatizerji SKD, cenjeni gostje in dragi prijatelji! Taki rezultati nas obvezujejo in mi izziv sprejemamo. Ne zanima nas opozicijski out, ampak hočemo odgovorno soustvarjati demokratično in samostojno Slovenijo. Imamo rezultate in vse več izkušenj. 18) GORICA, It. - V četrtek, 5. oktobra, je v komorni dvorani Katoliškega doma v Gorici spregovoril podpredsednik evropskih in predsednik slovenskih krščanskih demokratov Lojze Peterle. Take teze so povsem neumestne, saj Slovenija in slovensko gospodarstvo potrebujeta Evropo in njen trg. Zanimajo ga zgolj oprijemljivi podatki. In rezultati. Biznis. Žalujoči: žena Rose David in Steve, sinova Margie in Serena, snahi Brian, Jennifer, Kevin, in Eric, vnuki in vnukinja. Seveda. Part-time. Evenings, Mon-Fri. V pogovorih so kanadski sogovorniki pokazali razmeroma dobro poznavanje Slovenije, naših notranjepolitičnih razmer in gospodarskega položaja. V.S. Delo, 19.10.1995 smo se pripeljali skozi Maribor in — cesta je grozljiva. Po njej vozi vse mogoče, vsepovsod kolone, nenehno ustavljanje... Ce Slovenija želi s pridom vnovčiti svojo geografsko lego, potem mora nujno posodobiti infrastrukturo. V Ohiu, denimo, smo izbrali štiri poglavitne cilje. Prvi je kmetijstvo, najpomembnejša gospodarska panoga, povezana s predelavo hrane. Pri nas so največje tovarne konzervirane hrane na svetu. Drugi cilj: znanost in tehnologija. Hkrati jih seznanijo še s clevelandskim muzejem, simfoničnim orkestrom, državno rugbysko ligo, znamenitim centrom za rock and roli in podobno. • In četrti cilj? Mednarodna trgovina. Absolutno. Oba sta vsem bralcem predstavila naše potrebe in jih povabila k dobrodelnosti. Samozavestni in ustvarjalni. Gospe in gospodje, dragi krščanski demokrati! Naj bo čvrst in vztrajen, naj drži smer. Gospe in gospodje, sedem dni smo živeli s Celjem in Celje z nami. Oktobra so vojska in črnogorski prosti strelci sklenili obroč okoli Dubrovnika. Misijonska srečanja in pomenki 1104. Lani so vsega skupaj izstopili trije bogoslovci.
