Hermine Dicke, the First Director of our Scholarship Program for a 42-year tenure of it’s 48 years of existence is still very interested in our progress. Hermine is my dear aunt and I was able to attend one of her many family gatherings early this fall. Our Slovenian cousin Lydia and her family of Brazil along with a niece, Heliane studying in Chicago, came to the party. Even with the differences in language and current culture the day was very special. Meeting Lydia and Heliane for the first time gave the feeling that we had known each other for ever and have had a close relationship, when in fact we had never met or even written before that special day. Aunt Hermine may have retired from active participation in the Scholarship Program but her dedication to unifying families and enriching lives continues. I resolve to get my article in to ZARJA on time! (This first letter is even written a little early!) In looking over the past year’s issues of ZARJA I find so much of-interest; from the branch reporters’ news, to the National Secretary’s informative and instructional articles; from the Heritage History of the Branches to the recipe section; from the Scholarship and Women’s Activities to the personal stories and articles about our Slovenian Holiday Traditions. I feel united with you all through ZARJA, like a good book read over and over; always finding something I may have missed. I hope you read your issues often; you will get to know the reporters through their interesting articles and pictures and will come to appreciate the work being done by your officers and sister members. Our editor, Corinne Leskovar, does a remarkable job putting together a magazine we can all be so very proud of. Six issues of ZARJA in 1988 A letter was recently sent out by Corinne informing each branch of my decision to limit our magazine to just six (6) issues in 1998. We have spent many thousands of dollars to repair our Home Office building in Joliet. The cost of publishing eight (8) issues in 1997 was an astronomical $44,487.00 and the mailing costs were $7,944 not including the December issue. So we will save more than $10,000 by eliminating two issues. This was not a decision made easily! We all look forward to every issue of ZARJA! But I feel in the light of our financial obligations the prudent decision was to limit the publications in 1998. Br. 16, South Chicago, Illinois was organized in February, 1928, founded by Agnes Mahovlich. Br. 20, Joliet, Illinois was organized June, 1928 by Bara Kramer of San Francisco. Br. 20 has had the most officers serving on the National Board of S.W.U. and at present is the site of the Home Office. At this time Br. 20 is announcing a gala anniversary celebration in October, 1998! A HAPPY AND SUCCESSFUL NEW YEAR TO OFFICERS AND MEMBERS OF OUR 70-YEAR BRANCHES! We salute two branches that will be celebrating their 70th Anniversaries in 1998! THE CONNECTION! Donations Appreciated The scholarship program is funded year round by generous personal and branch donations. In 1997, the fund was the recipient of a large bequest from a Minnesota member (which is being held until we receive the necessary tax-exempt status from the IRS). Many of you have sent monies and purchased items from our Heritage Gift Shop; keeping it a self-sustaining fund. Please, if your branch is financially solvent consider donating to the ZARJA “Keep the Connection Fund.” We need this vital link to keep us joined together over the miles. All contributions will be gratefully acknowledged and your sister members will sincerely appreciate your generosity. New Collection of Recipes Requested Remember to send your recipes for our next Cook Book Project! This has been a very frustrating effort for our appointed Cook Book Editor, Marion Bowers. With such minimal response to her requests and ideas the Board has decided to use the old “Pots and Pans” format with your new and additional recipes added. This will be a fitting tribute to Hermine Dicke, our founder’s daughter, for all her years of dedication to the Cook Book and Column. We want it to be the best Cook Book ever! I hope you will review the up-dated By-Laws aloud at your next meetings. This will keep you informed of the changes made and renew your commitment to our beloved organization and its founding principles. May we continue to enlighten you all through our publicaton, Zarja - The Dawn. NATIONAL SECRETARY - - KEEPING UP-TO-DATE Like it or not, a new year has arrived. We have to try our best to accomplish all the goals we have set for ourselves. We anxiously wait to see what will happen and where we will be at this same time next year— with the turn of a century only 365 days away. Secretaries: Any death benefits submitted after mid-November will not be paid until at least mid-January. Priorities have been set and there are other matters that must be handled first. If you are questioned as to “when do I get my check,” please ask the beneficiaries to be patient. It never ceases to amaze me that when deaths have occurred (let's say six months previously) that all of a sudden it becomes an ASAP matter. If SWU certificates are not presented with the death certificate, the process takes even longer. Patience is all we ask. Something to look forward to in 1998. We are presently reviewing and researching the possibility of publishing a cookbook hopefully by summer. This is not a new cookbook, but a revised edition of the last POTS AND PANS. Presently we have four books in circulation for the purpose of editing. Recipes are being added only if some have been deleted. Here is the best part of the project, the issue will be dedicated to Hermine Dicke who over many, many years not only handled the writing of the Food Column, she compiled and edited the cookbook and also kept the Scholarship Fund in order. The suggestion was made to the Executive Board that we save time/money in reviewing what we already had in hand, doing a few revisions, some updating and titling it, “Pots and Pans,” Second Edition, a Tribute to Hermine Dicke. Hermine, who celebrated her 85th birthday this year, is also contributing to the book. Several of her favorite recipes will be featured throughout the book. We feel that this project is worthwhile and the tribute is long overdue to Hermine. Keep this in mind, and sometime during 1998 with a little luck, you will be able to purchase the books for next Christmas gifts. Please wish us well on our effort, keep the project (and Hermine) in your prayers. Soon after the first of the year, the computer program for the membership will be run. We have been “feeding” the information all year and this will give us our membership statistics so many branches have requested. The program, because of the information it contains, cannot be updated every time new applications are received or deaths are reported. When it was originally set up, it was programmed to be updated year-by-year. Again, patience please. When it is available for our annual report to the Department of Insurance, copies will be made for each branch. You can see that with the New Year actually still a month away (as I write this column) we have already a busy schedule ahead of us. The first billing should be printed January 5th, 1998. If all goes well, mid-February should see the end of it. Just this past week I received a note from a member along with her invoice. She said she was surprised when going through papers on her desk and came across the invoice, could not believe that she had not paid it (thank you, MK). There are still many unpaid invoices on record. Maybe a new year’s resolution to go through papers on our desks would see some of those winding their way to us with payments. Check it out!! You have been advised that ZARJA will be only six issues in 1998. The magazine is by far the most costly venture we have, the small amount that comes in for ads and as donations does not cover even ONE issue. It has never been self-sustaining (as is Heritage and Scholarship), and cutting out two issues is a saving of over $10,000, if not more. Bear with us. Corinne Leskovar is doing her best to make sure that all the information sent in us used properly and that the quality of our publication does not deteriorate. Just as you do with your household budget, we, too, have to cut comers, make adjustments and stretch our our funds. We thank you for your understanding. We trust that with the holidays now a memory, we can all settle back and get down to the business of moving ahead. Reflect on the Christmas that you have spent with your loved ones, carry some of that kindness, charity and love into the new year. Lord only knows, we can all use it. Respectfully, Evelyn A. Majercik, National Secretary OUR NATIONAL SECRETARY EVELYN MAJERCIK IS CITED BY OHIO STATE SENATE The General Assembly of the State of Ohio has cited our National Secretary Evelyn Majercik, for distinguished service to Slovenian-Americans of her community. This brings to mind the fact that many of our members may not know or realize the many facets of Evelyn’s life that make her a special person. A reporter from the local Bedford Heights newspaper visited her recently and wrote a commendation for the paper that outlines just how special she is. For one, Evelyn is the daughter of Mary and T.J. Walters who were early residents of the Bedford area. They were active in the Slovenian community so it was natural for Evelyn to follow in this people-to-people habit. She got started with the Slovenian Women’s Union directly from her mother’s involvement in Warrensville Hgts., where Mary was a long-time president of Br. 73. Evelyn began first as a member herself, then assumed some of the branch activities, began writing for ZARJA, and later, became the Regional President for Ohio-Michigan. Remember our lovely National Convention in 1991? Evelyn took active part as Chairman and in 1995, she came to the next Convention as a well-informed delegate from Br. 73. It was then that she was elected National Secretary, a position she takes very seriously, giving all her energy and know-how into setting up our Zveza in a modem computerized system. Evelyn is very interested in SWU and especially in the preservation of our cultural heritage of which she is so proud. “I have an affection for the Slovenian people” she says. “There is a certain fascination with them - and there are a lot of beautiful Slovenian traditions we enjoy,” she added. Besides her SWU work, Evelyn has worked with the Bus Company that her father founded many years ago - she still enjoys organizing bus tours all over the place! She also worked as a Bedford police dispatcher from 1973 until her retirement last October. A year ago Evelyn lost her husband, Steve and in 1989, the family lost her daughter, Mary, after a battle with leukemia. Since then she has her grandson, Steve Lax at home with her - he’s an active 14 year old! She loves to write letters and articles which we enjoy in ZARJA and she is a whiz at handicraft, sewing, knitting, crocheting, stitching - all of it! Always has busy hands! With her family, Evelyn extends all good wishes to all for the New Year and we extend hearty congratulations to her for many happy and productive years! ft ft ft> ft ft ft: ft ft ft ft: SLOVENIA Travel Book ft ift :ft ft’ ft ft ft ft ft ft-' Beverly Jackson, Zaria reporter for Branch #13, San Francisco, wrote in the October-November Zarja, "Mary Shockley and daughter, Ina Henderson, spent 6 weeks in Slovenia. ...They used the "Lonely Planet" (travel) book on Slovenia and give it rave reviews. OHIO-MICHIGAN STATE CONVENTION Sunday, September 28, 1997 Slovenian Women’s Union members and guests gathered at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Bedford Heights for the liturgy to open the Ohio-Michigan State Convention. The Procession was led by presenters of a bouquet of flowers to the Blessed Mother in memory of all deceased members of Slovenska Ženska Zveza. Presenters: Mary Taucher, Branch No. 47; Alouise Eppley, Branch No. 73; Rosemarie Paul, Branch No. 101. The choir comprising members of Holy Trinity and S.W.U. members from St. Lawrence parish began proceedings by singing “Lepa Si.” They were accompanied by organist. Mr. Ed Henry throughout the entire mass. With a warm welcome, the Celebrant at mass was Father Ernest Hepner. Father Hepner wanted to make us aware of our differences, but to realize and respect other religions, races and color. With this understanding we draw closer to God and each other. Offertory gifts were presented by: Elsie Spellacy, Branch No. 47 and Vicki Matjašič, Branch No. 101. After Mass, we gathered at the Bedford Hts. City Hall. Everyone received a carnation upon entering the party room. An array of hors d’oeuvres were available during the time required for everyone to arrive from church. Shortly after 1:00 p.m. Father Hepner gave the Invocation and dinner was served. Branch No. 101 provided an exceptional family style meal which included a splendid array of desserts. The meeting was called to order at approximately 2:00 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance followed. Our National Officers were introduced, Kathleen Dor-chak, National Vice President; Evelyn Majercik, National Secretary; and 2nd Auditor, Marge Church. Kathleen Dorchak was called upon as our Keynote Speaker. Her topic was children! She reflected on how we can learn a lesson from the movie “The Lion King.” Influencing our children to do what is right, to share, to understand our lives are like circles. Hopefully, our existence leaves a legacy of good and the circle goes on - “The Circle of Life. ” Roll call was taken. Of 17 branches in the Ohio-Michi-gan Region, only 9 branches were represented. There were 89 members and 17 guests in attendance. Diane Varney, Secretary-Treasurer of Branch 14 read the minutes of the State Convention held Sunday, October 13, 1996 at Recher Hall in Euclid, OH. Minutes were accepted as read. Our ongoing concern is the reluctance of any Branch to commit to a future Convention. Alternatives brought up by the President were to meet as a group and not have any specific Branch responsible. Discussion followed with St. Vitus being asked to celebrate our mass, with dinner to follow at Sterle’s Slovenian Country Restaurant. A vote followed and was passed by the majority. Fran Gazvoda; Regional Vice President and President of Branch No. 25, volunteered to contact St. Vitus and Sterle’s to coordinate our 1998 Convention. It was noted that a Regional convention in 1998 is of prime importance to prepare for the National Convention scheduled for May 1999 in Orlando, Florida. Evelyn Majercik; National Secretary addressed some continuing problems with payment of dues. Evelyn suggested getting a bus to attend Joliet, IL, Branch 20’s 70th Anniversary, on October 4, 1998. Evelyn would also coordinate buses to attend the 1999 Convention in Florida. The meeting ended with Florence Mirtel extending thanks to all in attendance and members of Branch No. 101 for all their assistance. We closed the meeting singing “God Bless America.” The afternoon ended with a raffle of gifts donated by Branch No. 101 and other members. Respectfully submitted, Olga A. Dorchak, Regional President MINUTES OF THE ILLINOIS-INDIANA STATE CONVENTION October 5, 1997 The Slovenian Women’s Union District Convention was hosted by Branch 24, LaSalle, Illinois. The membership assembled at La Salle Catholic School. Coffee, juice, rolls, donuts, muffins, flancati (angel wings), and potica were offered to the delegates, members and guests. At 9:30 a.m. the guests were welcomed by President of Br. 24, Anne Wangler. The meeting was turned over to District President, Bonnie Prokup. She introduced the National officers present: Jean Korsman, President, Corinne Leskovar, ZARJA Editor and Pat Figurowski, Auditor. Bonnie then read letters of regret from those unable to attend. Genevieve Buol, Dist. Vice President, read the minutes of the last convention. We were especially pleased to have two members of Branch 5, Indianapolis in attendance. Jean Korsman then spoke. She expressed disappointment on the lack of support for the Bishop Baraga statue restoration-this being a national project. She said Marion Bowers, Food Editor, requested the members to send more recipes for the new Pots and Pans Cookbook—especially Slovenian, authentic or adaptations. Of great concern is the fact that some members still have not been billed for 1997 and the individual branches do not have an up-to-date list of their paid-up members. A revision of the by-laws is being worked on and should be available soon. She also stressed the need for greater support toward the National Organization’s projects, rather than to civic and community projects. The ZARJA and Scholarship funds in particular are always in need of more financial assistance. It is also important for branches to establish an emergency fund and a fund for State President’s expenses. — ’onal MINUTES (Cont’d): Corinne Leskovar has been Editor of ZARJA for almost 45 years. She said it has been her observation that branches with young members are much more active and she encouraged enlisting more youth in branch activities. She also requested recognition of the ZARJA reporters, who do such a fine job. Grace Doerk was introduced. Reports were given by the following delegates of Branches in Illinois and Indiana: 2, Chicago, Jean Cerjak; 5, Indianapolis, Mary Frances Mohr; 20, Joliet, Char Kobe; 24, La Salle, Betty Stack; 85, DePue, read by Betty Stack (Delegate Mary Jermene unable to attend due to illness); 89, Oglesby, Rose Ann Prey; 95, South Chicago, Mildred James. No report was sent by Branch 16 and no members were in attendance. Members of Branch 2 and Branch 20 identified themselves by wearing “jingle bells.” Jonita Ruth, Br. 20 extended an invitation to the District Convention next year which will be held in conjunction with celebrating their 70th anniversary. Their plans are for a “mini” getaway weekend at the Empress Hotel and Casino Boat. The meeting was adjourned and all proceeded to Resurrection Church where noon Mass was celebrated by Rev. John Onderko, Pastor and con-celebrated by Rev. Bernard Horzen, OSB, who also was the homilist. Everyone joined in singing the closing hymn, Angelsko Ceščenje. The banquet was held at the Paramount Banquet and Catering Center. Rev. Onderko greeted the guests and Rev. Horzen led Grace before dinner—sung to the melody “Edelweiss.” A delicious buffet followed. Rev. Horzen, as the Keynote speaker, was his usual entertaining self. All appreciated his remarks and enjoyed his stories. The meeting was closed. Our youngest Juniors took turns saying “dober dan.” Music for listening and dancing was supplied by George Muylle, accordionist. Raffle prizes were distributed and everyone received a door prize. The success of this convention is attributed to those on various committees whose hard work and results were self-evident. They are to be commended! THANK YOU! We hope those who attended enjoyed themselves. St. Stephen’s lower hall January 1998 Happy New Year to Everyone! “Year of the Tiger”. There are so very few remaining in the wild, being killed for their fur. Visit your local zoo and enjoy them; find out how you can help to save them. November - Our theme was the “Shopping Mall.” It was our annual penny social; money from this event is used to purchase gifts for our children’s party. Fran Morison spends many hours shopping to make sure that each child gets the right gift. We were happy to see Percy Morison after his long illness. December 6 - St. Stephen’s was transformed into “Candy Cane Lane.” Children came all dressed up to meet Santa Claus. They colored ornaments which were placed on a Christmas Tree. Children sang songs and the kitchen committee served lunch; then bells rang out and that meant that Santa was on his way! What joy! It was great to see the excitement on their little faces. After all the presents were given, the children presented Santa with the Christmas tree that they had decorated. It was a surprise for Santa! Meta Hanzlik and her mother Giz-zela Lah were off on an exciting trip to Spain, Portugal and Morocco. They enjoyed all the places, but found Morocco to be the place that appealed to them the most. Many thanks to Corinne Leskovar for the 45 years she has worked as our Editor of ZARJA. She made many reporters sound intelligent with her help. We always wait to read the next copy. Thanks again. Corinne, you’ve been our star! (Many thanks, Daisy, for your generous compliments. C) Julie Partyka (14 yrs old) - daughter of MaryAnne Partyka and granddaughter of Frances Schultz, great granddaughter of Josie Squok and the late Frances Zibert - has started writing in ZARJA! Good luck, Julie, with your articles. We’ll enjoy reading them. Congratulations to Marie Ovnik -she has been in the travel business for 49 years. We wish you much luck as you continue with your career. Please remember in your prayers our sick and those who cannot attend our meetings: Mary Foys, Elsie Melissa, Albie Cecich, Maryann Partyka, Angie Blatnik, Katie Srabamek, Mary Foys Lauretig, Ronnie Zefran. Our condolences to the family of Katherine Tuzak. She was a member for many years and was always there to help. Also, to Sister Cindy on the loss of her mother. Keep them in your prayers that they will rest in peace. December 11, an anniversary mass was celebrated for our deceased members. Lillian Brule, Br. 20 has her beautiful paintings on display at the Slovene Cultural Center/Lemont. They will be there through January. It would be a great outing to go there with your family to see her beautiful art work. Our National President had spoken on Volunteering. At our last meeting we asked members to tell of things they do outside their household: Elsie Ciszek and Maria Rigler take care of the altar at St. Stephen’s Church. Mary Reich is always there to drive any of our members or her neighbors to the doctor or wherever needed since so many do not drive. Irene Kalina puts in so many hours at many church activities. She is truly our #1 volunteer. She works at the Market Day, Bingo Kitchen, Church Council, Trip Coordinator, Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women, Vicariate 3 Board, Our Lady’s Guild, and baby sitting! Other baby sitters are: Delores Puhek, Mary Potter, Anna Hozzian and Agnes Wroblewski. Irene Smid: St. Anthony Hospital and Croatian Franciscan Press; Marie Rom: Loyola Hospital; Beth and Tom Manion, besides making home for many strays, help at the TLC Humane Society; Members who help at the Slovene Cultural Center/Lemont: Theresa Krampač, Barbara Krampač, Kati Gaber, Fanika Gorsic, Meta Hanzlik, Daisy Železnikar. Ray Nuško spends many hours decorating the St. Stephen’s lower hall each month with emphasizing the monthly theme. It really makes our hall interesting and enjoyable for all. If I have missed anyone, please let me know. Beginning with January, we will be receiving the ZARJA, every other month, 6 issues each year. Have you received your letter from our National Secretary regarding your Zveza dues? Many of our members of Branch 2, as of this writing, say they have not. Call Delores Puhek and let her know. Our condolences to the Slovenian Franciscan Fathers on their loss of Brother Robert Hochevar. He died on Dec. 7, and was laid to rest on Dec. 11 at Lemont. He will be missed by everyone; he was always there to help at the Baraga House and for all the picnics on the hill. Remember him in your prayers. May he rest in peace. If you have any Slovenian recipes, please give them to me so I can forward them to our food editor. Remember, our National Convention is coming fast, in 1999. Start putting together things you think should be addressed at this convention so our delegate can bring them up and the sessions. If yesterday’s deeds look big, you haven’t done much today. Keep a journal. Love, DAISY NO. 5, INDIANAPOLIS, IN Meeting: 1st Thurs. SND, from May to Dec. HAPPY NEW YEAR I hope that everyone had a very Merry Christmas. 1 hope that your New Year is off to a great start. Since I write my article about a month before you see it, I trust that everyone is surviving the cold and the snow. Our Christmas party was December 11, so I will report on it in the March- April issue. We will also let you know the date for our May meeting. I do know that Mary Fon was not at the December party. She was off in Slovenia visiting relatives. We hope she had a great time there. I was also not at the annual party. My company had their Christmas party on December 12, and this was too much of a conflict for me. I sure miss coming to the luncheons. Would you consider having one in Texas? Member News: Kristina Cox, a junior member, was the Very Important Person for the grading period at her middle school in Avon. Kristina not only won the award, but also was given the special privilege of having lunch with the Principal. I love hearing your news, but no one is sending it to me. Alas, I guess living in Texas will always keep me out of the loop. God be with all of you that have been shut-in. We are thinking and praying for you. Take care of yourselves and watch out for ice patches. Love from Texas, BARBARA I’ve already received my assessment so as soon as I get the money it will be all sent to the secretary, E. Majercik. We have a new “B” member transferred from Lodge 105: Cynthia Jenson, HCR #33, Box 696, Uvalde, Texas 78801. Her background is of the Barberton area so if you have time write her a line or two. Welcome, Cynthia! Also don’t forget our snow bird, Julie Muren, 10 Azalea Drive, Southern Court, Riviera Bch, FL 33404. She’s back in Florida now. She was staying with her daughter in Colorado. Ladies, our branch has few ladies left - 18 - and 1 junior. Don’t any of your ladies have grandchildren? I don’t want our heritage to be lost. Sign up someone today. God bless you! Happy New Year! Hope everyone’s Christmas holiday was great! Now its almost time for Valentine’s Day. Everyone should read their newsletter of December showing where to send their dues. I’m with my son on the ocean, in a condo, no less, recuperating for at least six more months. Please send your dues c/o Linda Lambright P.O. Box 16602 Surfside Bch, SC 29587-6602 Our November meeting was well-attended and a delicious lunch was served by our kitchen gals. We honored the November and December birthdays. Next on the agenda was the election of officers. All officers accepted for the next year except Theresa Fedran, our secretary. She has an ailing husband who takes up much of her time. We elected Fran Remshak, 2159 So. 93rd St., Milwaukee, 53227, telephone 541-5116. Fran is a very capable person and we welcome her. And, a big thank you to Theresa for all your hard work and loyalty to our branch! The Christmas party was beautiful. Eight year old Ann Kotze made our tickets on her computer. She is the granddaughter of Sylvia Kotze. Thank you, Ann. The food was out of this world. We had it at the South Woods in Cudahy but the best part was how management handled Marion Marolt so she could attend. This place should be considered again. Gifts were exchanged and there were plenty of Christmas cookies to enjoy. A big hand to the committee! We extend sympathy to Jennie Ward whose husband passed away. Hope your health problems are improving. Ann Jelinek spent a couple of days in the hospital, too. Rose Leubke and her husband spent Thanksgiving in Washington. I bet there was much football discussed. Sophie Rozman was planning to go to Indiana to spend Chirstmas with Bob and his family. With five children it will keep Sophie busy. Ann Paulin had a twinkle in her eye! Son, Gary will be home for Christmas, too. Attend the meetings to keep up with our goings and comings. A healthy year to all, especially the shut-ins. MARY KIEL NO. 13, SAN FRANCISCO, CA Meeting: 1st Thurs. Slovenian Hall on Mariposa St. Everyone at Br. 13 sends good wishes for a Happy, Healthy New Year to all our sister branches! I also send out prayers and good wishes to our members who can no longer make the meetings. We had a very pleasant surprise when Ema Tauner of Br. 5 and her son, Rich of Indianapolis, Indiana were visiting her son, Ron and wife, Evelyn and daughter and also her other daughter from Kelso, Washington. They came to San Francisco and since Ema read about our Church of the Nativity being reopened in my ZARJA article she visited us for mass. They were all pleased and happy to meet San Francisco Slovenians, including our pres, of Br. 13, Jo Aiuto, Vice-Pres., Louise Petrusich and Auditor, Virginia Sus-tarich. Virginia and Rudy Sustarich celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on Sept. 21st 1997. They had a beautiful dinner party at their home, given by daughter, Ann, sons, John and Mark and families. It was decorated lovely and those attending were Moreen Spencer and Doreen Susterich who were the twin flower girls at their wedding; also attending were her sister, Josephine Aiuto and niece Michele Twer, husband, Denny along with many family members. Ann Sustarich recently returned from a pilgrimage trip to the Holy Land and Egypt. She visited the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem and had Mass said in Thanksgiving for the re-opening of our Church of the Nativity here in S. F. AT THE WORLD HARVEST FESTIVAL The Koncar family participated in this year’s World Harvest Festival in Joliet recently. On the photo are Ray Koncar with the button box, Robby (Gr. 5), Frankie (Gr. 4), John (Gr. 1), all students at St. Joseph’s grammar school. The exhibit was under the auspices of the SWU Heritage Museum and St. Joseph’s School. We received a lovely note from Marie (Minnie) Heath who is living at a retirement home in Bakersfield, CA. Her daughter lives close by. Minnie sends regards to all. Our thoughts and prayers to Sophie Troya and Ann Nanut; upon hearing of the loss of their sister, Mary Udovich, we were all so saddened. These two ladies were always so active in all we did. Ann still joins us occasionally and Sophie has moved to Arizona. Feb. 5th will be our Valentine Luncheon. Hope to see many smiling faces. Remember, if you have any news, please contact me at (650) 631-1098. I love hearing from our members! Medical science can add years to our lives, but it is up to us to put life in those years... ' May your Valentine’s Day be filled with hearts and flowers: Happy Valentine’s Day! ALICE KUHAR Dear Members, I hope everyone had a nice Christmas and will have a prosperous and Happy New Year! The World Harvest Celebration, ’97 which was held at the Rialto Theatre on Sunday 11-23—97 was a huge success and it was wonderful to see all our young people taking part in the Art Exhibits, International Booth display and a talent showcase with talents of Junior High thru College level students representing all of Will County. Many thanks to Annette Koncar, Donna Markin, Bill Ferguson, Principal of St. Joe’s and Jonita Ruth for all their hard work to make this a success. Also thanks to Ray Koncar for his wonderful button box music and the yummy potica made by Mary Rozman. Beautiful Slovenia items were there from the Heritage Room. She is the daughter of Susan and Bob Ukovich and a senior of St. Francis Academy. Nice going, Emily! Recently Joe and Cele Wolf and Theresa and Benny Papesh attended the Polka Fest in Cleveland, Ohio where they met Tony and Dorothy Spindal. Bye for now, KATHY STONICH NO. 22, BRADLEY, IL Meeting: 3rd Tuesday every other month Members’ Homes Happy New Year to all! Happy Birthday to Margaret Planton, who arrived in Ely, MN January 1 some ?? years ago. And to all the other Jan.-Feb. arrivals, Elizabeth Kinder, Emma Znidarsich, Gabrielle Lustig and Mary Anne Barothy, Happy Birthday! To everyone, may only good things come your way. Needless to say how much we enjoyed the November meeting at Barbara Rittmanic’s home. Thank you, Barb and co-hostess, Helen Sebastiani, for all the goodies and the fun. We appreciate the note of gratitude from Mary Turvey, Director, for the Branch’s earlier contribution to the Scholarship Fund. In November we voted to also donate to the Heritage Fund, as well as to St. Joseph Church for Christmas. A Mass for the deceased and living members of our Branch was offered in November but through some mix-up in the Rectory office, a Mass was also offered in late October. We’ll take all we can get. We were sorry to hear that Anne Ponikvar Gifford had emergency surgery for a bursted appendix with partial bowel resection. Living across the street from St. Joe’s, it has been Anne who opens the church doors at 6 a.m. every morning (after her two-mile trot around town for exercise). In her absence, Leo Rittmanic and Barb see to the task of unlocking the doors. Anne is the daughter of charter member, Anna Ponikvar. Our prayers for complete recovery go out to Anne and to all our ailing family and friends. When we meet again, it will be St. Patrick's Day, with Toni Legris and Gabrielle Lustig entertaining. A Blessed 1998 to our readers. “Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.” A tall order, for we have inner battles to fight to make peace on earth possible. EMMA LUSTIG SWU Crest indicates the 70th Anniversary of this branch in 1998. Congratulations! NO. 23, ELY, MN Meeting: 1st Monday St. Anthony’s Church Hall Sept. thru May Members of Branch 23, Slovenian Women’s Union, met on October 6th and November 3rd. President, Jane Yadlosky presided at both meetings. Plans were made for the Slovenian Sampler Social. The Sampler Social was held at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and it was a great success, as it was last year. Members were very generous with their donations of bakery for the bakery tables, and also for the coffee tables. President Jane Yadlosky and Treasurer Rosemarie Buchner are to be commended for all of the hours and hard work they put into this social. Everyone who helped with baking, and selling, clean-up, etc. deserves a big thank you. I received an interesting item from Darlene Nemanich; and I will pass it on to the readers. Benjamin John Newhouse, bom on June 16, 1997, to John and Margrette Anne (Nemanich) Newhouse, has become a new Junior member of Branch 23. Grandmother Darlene registered him. Benjamin is a fifth generation member which in- MARGE’S MUSINGS... I can’t get it into my mind that it’s 1998. It seems like only yesterday I left high school and was so excited about leaving for college. Many years have passed and reflecting back on those years, one wonders what was done with them. They moved so fast; but back then they were moving so slow. Slovenska Ženska Zveza looks back too, many more years than I do, and during those years, SŽZ was so very active, so responsive to causes and needs, and so very supportive of one another. The membership has dwindled and the spirit has changed. It’s up to all of us to revive that spirit and life... think positive and work towards getting not only our children but our grandchildren involved. Books on Slovenian history and heritage seem to be appropriate for educating our young. Or how about what is happening in Slovenia now? Think about it and then do something. We have the love for our Zveza; let’s show it and get going! Thanks to National Auditor, Marge Church, Br. 42 eluded his great grandmother and his great great grandmother, Margie Pre-sheren and Mary Pucel (both deceased). Benjamin’s aunt, Jerelyne Nemanich is also a member, as well as great aunts and cousins. Benjamin’s mother, Margrette Newhouse, was the recipient of a SWU Scholarship in 1984. She attended the College of St. Benedict where she obtained her undergraduate degree with highest honors in business in 1988. She also attended the University of Minnesota, Carlson School of Business. She currently is Vice President and Manager of Client Services Division at National City Bank, Minneapolis. Happy New Year to all of you! MARCELLA ZUPEC NO. 24, LA SALLE, IL Meeting: 3rd Thurs. Catholic School Library Mar.-Apr.-May-June Sept.-Oct.-Nov. I want to thank Vice President Minnie Carter for presiding at the November meeting in my absence. I spent a week in Branson, Missouri with my husband, two sisters, two brothers and their spouses, taking in the Christmas Shows. My husband and I were down there a year ago in October and several of our members said we should have waited till November to see Christmas in Branson, so we took their advice. The family reunion spent in adjoining rooms at the Motel and all the shows made it very special. Betty Stack, our Financial Secretary-Trea-surer, will purchase a gift for a needy child whose ticket is taken from the Giving Tree at Resurrection Church. She will also send a check to the Food Pantry to help with Christmas Food for the families in need. Minnie, Betty and Adele Gensler will make up fruit baskets for our shut-in members. Mary Mecum and Linda Struna, Co-chairmen, presented the Christmas Party arrangements to the members. The party was held on December 11th at Starved Rock Lodge. One of our Auditors, Jo Foley, gave us a scare by landing in the hospital shortly after the Convention. I understood that it was a warning and the doctor has her health under control now. Our newest member, Frances Kasik, had heart surgery at St. Francis Hospital in Peoria as did Henry Well-ner, Theresa’s husband. Hope they are well on the road to good health. Minnie Carter reported that her great grandson, Kevin Sweetland, is responding well to the Stem Cell transplant he received at St. Jude Hospital. George Helmer told us that he moved Wanita into an apartment in Springfield, where she is walking with a walker and learning to be independent again. She is still working with the therapists. This has been a long, trying time for her but knowing Wanita, we expect to see her home soon! Mary Gomik celebrated her 100th birthday by giving up her apartment and moving to her daughter, Dorothy’s home in Naperville. The branch extends sympathy to Sharon Brady, whose grandfather, Stan Witek passed away in September and to Mary Ann Potthoff whose father, Walter Rydz, passed away in August. Two of our members had weddings of daughters recently. Janice Mueller’s daughter, Wendy and Scott Lauer were married at Resurrection Church in September and Loretta Story’s daughter, Jane and Karl Haake of Leawood, KS, were married in July at St. Joseph’s Church in Peru. We offer best wishes for much happiness to the newlyweds. Congratulations to Susan Collins and her husband on the birth of daughter Emily Brekan Collins in Manassas, VA. Congratulations, too, to Frances Jean Ficek and husband on the new grandchild. Belated birthday wishes to our December birthday members: Junior member, Caitlin Collins, Olga Fritz, Marian Borisek, Evelyn Kastigar, Antonia Hoefferle, Fannie Piletič, Jane Gruenwald and Mary Ann Weber. In January Janice Mueller, Cathy Jo Len-kaitis and Linda Struna will blow out the candles and in February, Irene Mauser, Sharon Brady, Theresa Savnik, Doris Hallett and Anne Wangler will be another year older. Hope we all have a very Happy Birthday and a good year. Our first meeting of 1998 will be held on Thursday, March 19th at 7:00 p.m. in La Salle Catholic School. Plan to join us as we do have a nice evening-meeting followed with light refreshments. ANNE M. WANGLER, Reporter NO. 32, EUCLID, OH Meeting: 3rd Wednesday SSH Recher Ave. Happy Holidays to each and everyone of you with good health and happiness! At our October meeting an income statement was given to each member on our Chinese Auction. It was very successful. President Ann Cooke thanked all the members and everyone else who had worked to make it successful. Thank you to all who attended. Members purchased raffle tickets from Branch 42 for their raffle in December. Good luck to Branch 42. Sick members that are now recuperating at home: Marge Sas had surgery on her right hand; Charlotte Perdan with pneumonia; Mary Tushar, Rose Brancely, Emile Kerman and Elizabeth Perme. Our prayers are with you ladies. Get well soon. Sympathy to Margaret Milavec and family whose husband and father, Mirko entered eternal rest on November 15, 1997. Celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary are Emily and Tony Jelenič (October 25th); also, Esther and Zani Garbincus on November 23rd. Congratulations and may you have many more years with good health happiness. Some of the members are planning to go on the trip to Joliet, Illinois to help Branch 20 celebrate their 70th Anniversary in October, 1998 if there is a bus leaving from Cleveland. Vacationing in Australia for 2 weeks is our member, Mary Sterle and husband, Richard. They are always on the go traveling to different parts of the country. In Australia it’s summer now so they are enjoying warm weather. Election of Officers for 1998 President, Ann Cooke; Vice President, Alma Eppich; Financial Secretary and Treasurer, Charlotte Perdan; Recording Secretary and Reporters, Adrienne Jager. Meeting: Third Wednesday of the month; time: 7:00 p.m. Place: Slovene Society Home in Euclid. Please remember there will be no meetings in January or February of 1998. FRANCES OGOREVC ADRIENNE JAGER NO. 35, AURORA, MN Meeting: 6 per year Community Sr. Center On a snowy Sunday afternoon (November 2nd) our ladies enjoyed a pleasant afternoon with the Biwabik ladies. We were asked to introduce ourselves and say something in Slovenian which was very interesting! Thank you, ladies, for your hospitality! Sunday, November 30th was a very special day for the Martin Urick family who had their son, Spencer’s baptism and for the Robert Wheeler’s son, David, who made his First Holy Communion. May God bless and keep David and Spencer in His care. The following report is written by our grandson James Wheeler (15) about his family’s trip to Europe in October. ***** In October my father had to attend business meetings in Europe so we de- cided to make it into a family vacation. We flew into Frankfurt, Germany and drove down to a little village near the city of Baden-Baden. We stayed here for about five days. Our family rented an apartment up in the hill village of Neusatz. We were positioned on the top of three floors. We had a balcony with a terrific view of the valley. Our picture perfect view stretched almost to the French border on a clear day. We stayed there for five days and on the fourth day we dined at Capplewin-deck, a medieval castle which was in ruins. It was situated at the highest point of the mountain range surrounding the valley. From there you could over look the entire valley and see rows upon rows of vineyards adorning the walls of the hilly gorge. Everywhere you looked as far as you could see there were vineyards in neat little rows. Attached to the ruins of the castle was an elegant restaurant in which we had a five course dinner with roast duck as the main dish. During our tenure in Germany, we drove across the border to Strasbourg, France for the day. We went shopping and visited a large cathedral situated in the center of the city that seemed to reach all the way to the heavens. After Germany we headed to Switzerland. We stayed in Lachen which is a ‘suburb’ of the city of Zurich. Our hotel was on Lake Zurich. While we were there we went window shopping in town. The port of Lachen had a beautiful walkway along the shore that had benches and a park nearby where we sat and wrote postcards as the breezes blowing off the lake calmly caressed our bodies leaving us very relaxed. One day we drove down to Lucerne for a railcar ride up into the Swiss Alps. We took a ferry across Lake Lucerne to a railcar station and took it up to the mountain town of Rigi. They had a large chess board up there with pieces approximately two feet tall so my dad and I decided to play a game or two while we waited for the rail on the way back down. In the village near the town meeting hall hung a gargantuan cow bell that was at least two feet across! We had lunch there and then descended the mountain. As we took our boat ride back the sun began to pierce through the oppressively low clouds and illuminated the countryside creating a game of shadows on the twists and turns of the grassy mountain canyons leaving a perfect ending to a perfect day. We departed from Switzerland a few days later and headed back to Frankfurt, where we caught our flight back to the United States much more relaxed after having a wonderful trip. Happy New Year and Valentine’s Day! ANNE M. ORAZEM NO. 47, GARFIELD HTS., OH Meeting: Mar.-May-Sep.-Dec. SND Maple Hts. May the perpetual light shine upon him. Hope you all enjoyed your Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays with your family and friends. MARY TAUCHER, Reporter NO. 50, EUCLID, OH Meeting: 3rd Wed. Euclid Park Clubhouse except July & Aug. Here we are beginning a new year. Let us hope it will be a worthwhile one no matter what the doomsayers have in store for us. January 2nd - is - one of the most encouraging days of any year, it’s the end of another tunnel. Since we will not have a meeting in January, we will have to look forward to February 17th for the next meeting, the 1st meeting in 1998. Do come, because it will be a very informative meeting during which our “Valentine Queen” of this year will be chosen. Above all - wear “RED” or you will be fined. Since the Euclid Library will have its open house on January 10th and 11th, our 1st meeting of 1998 will be held there in February. In the meantime, there will be a board meeting in January. The revised Bylaws will be coming. Check with our President Ann Tercek if this info is needed before our February meeting. This will include a revised ritual for our deceased members. At our November meeting, all our officers agreed to another term. Evelyn Pipoly’s office duties have been transferred to the main SWU office for the most part, so Evelyn is out of a job. However, she kindly volunteered to manage our annual picnic, a duty which will be shared with Mary Blatnik. Our Picnic will take place this year one week after our September meeting. It was also decided that a five dollar token and a card will be sent to our members who have achieved their 55th year membership. We also want to mention that Lodge 50 made Christmas donations to the following: Our magazine, ZARJA-The Dawn, the Heritage Museum, the Scholarship Fund, and the Slovenian Home for the Aged. We shall continue our funeral ritual during which our Marie Prisland (foundress) Cadets always recite prayers at funeral homes and attend the funeral where the ritual is read at the time. We thank all the members and Cadets who do attend these last tributes of honor to our departed member of the moment. We did have a climatic year for 1997. We lost 12 members from our midst. The 1st being Ann Zalar, a 48-year member and Flo Brichta, a 19-year ZftRJR donations! Our December mail came in - and with it three wonderful checks from our loyal members. Early on came Irene Odorizzi’s gracious comments on ZARJA with greetings and wishes to all who put it together. Irene also mentioned the fine tribute written by Tillie Ausich in ZARJA, asking for members and branches to donate to our own worthy causes, ZARJA, Heritage and Scholarship. Jo and Walter Lustig (Br. 20) added holiday wishes along with Jo’s annual donation - another loyal member responding to a noble call. And, from far off Germany, Jill Augustine, formerly the president of Br. 103, Washington, D.C. sent a letter of commendation along with a generous check. To all, our heartfelt thanks - what a nice way to begin the new year! Irene Odorizzi (103) $10 Jo Lustig (20) $40 Jill Augustine (103) $50 Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! member, both left us in November. Also, Mollie Walt’s sister, Mary Klaric died in November. God bless all of them and may they rest in peace. We have received word that our former Vice President, Jane Novak now lives with her daughter at 216 Canfield Road, Chardon, OH 44024. Let us know, she is not too far away from us. We miss seeing all our members who have moved away. Honey Vegel, Alice Lauche, Vera Nosan, Jane Novak, Frances Scigliano, and Ann Hočevar. God bless you, and give you love and peace in your new surroundings. KEEP IN TOUCH! We have had several happy and lengthy wedding anniversaries to celebrate: Ann and Ed Arhar - 50 years; Ann and Louis Winter - 56 years; Molly and Archie Watt - 60 years; Continue this phenomenon. Make these figures grow. We also had a special honorary membership bestowed upon Rosemary Mam who has been a member of the ZARJA Singing Society for 50 years. She was presented with the famous painting of Lake Bled, Slovenia by a Slovenian artist. It was a memorable and well deserved occasion for Rosemary. Another beautiful surprise came into the world, his name is Zacary Ulrey making our president Ann Tercek become a great grandmother for the fourth time. Nice work if you can get it. Member Celia Dolgan had a tour of Australia and thereabout along with at least 30 travelers. It is a remarkable area to visit and even in which to live. Several of our members, such as Ann Tercek and I, have been there earlier in this century. Let’s hope Celia can relate some of this latest adventure soon to us. We hope you enjoyed our annual Christmas Party and that you will find time to attend all the meetings in this new year, 1998. Don’t forget to send in your annual dues to our National Secretary, Evelyn Majercik when you receive your bill. In 1998 you will receive ZARJA - The Dawn every other month instead of any previous arrangement. In other words, as in the next issue, news for the March and April issue must be in by the 1st of February for publication. There will be 6 issues per year. Also, remember, don’t ignore your seat belt just because you may have an air bag. NASVIDENJE! Epley’s Home 20294 Emery Rd., No Randall Happy New Year! That’s what the calendar is telling us. Let’s hope that the word “Happy” can remain as a descriptive term for all of us the entire year. I delayed writing this column, hoping that I could include the gathering at my home for our Christmas Party. After conversation with our President (Kay Yuratovac) the evening before our scheduled get-together, it was determined that the party, per se, should be cancelled. It is a busy season, members not feeling up to par, and a general “I just can’t do it,” we felt it best to have a Christmas meeting, rather than a party. We do not meet during January and February, it was rather essential that we talk about a few matters. Perhaps this year, we will have to plan a holiday affair distant from the end of the year. Someone once said, “I wish Christmas would come in July, when we’re not so busy.” We trust that all of you enjoyed a festive holiday season with family and friends. Our loyal, devoted secretary, Alouise Epley has really been under the weather for a week or so (end of November). We do hope that by this time she is back to feeling somewhat more like her old self. Alouise is one of those members who we depend on to keep us together. We meet at her home, our summer function is usually held in her spacious yard that accommodates the parking and set-up, with room for the younger ones to run. So, when Alouise is down-Branch No. 73 is down. We wish you well, Alouise, take care of yourself. You will want to mark your 1998 calendar for Sunday, April 19th when we will have our Annual Anniversary Mass at St. Jude’s Church, 10:30 o’clock a.m. And, as our “tradition” has it, we will attend the Knights of Columbus Pancake Breakfast immediately following mass. This is always a pleasant get-together and we hope to see many of you in attendance. Surrounding branches are welcome to join us at this mass/breakfast. Please keep the date open and make plans now to attend. On October 4th, Branch No. 20 will celebrate its’ 70th Anniversary. They have a festive weekend planned. A bus trip from our area has been organized to Joliet, Illinois to join them in their celebration. The tour will leave on Saturday, October 3rd and return on Monday, October 5th. A full itinerary has been planned. Cost is $135.00 per person (double occupancy) includes transportation, hotel, Anniversary Dinner, and ... a casino stop in Gary, Indiana for a buffet luncheon on our return trip! If you are interested, please call me, 439-1825. Bus seating is limited to 45; first to call will have priority. Remember that ZARJA is publishing only six (6) issues this year. Your newsworthy items will be somewhat delayed, get them to us early. Also, please don’t write or call regarding your dues. Billing has begun, you will receive an invoice. Have a Happy New Year and Valentine’s Day and enjoy any other holi- days, birthdays, anniversaries that may occur during January and February. We will be back for March/April. Our next scheduled Branch 73 meeting is March 2nd, 1998. We will enjoy seeing you around our table. Respectfully submitted, EVELYN A. MAJERCIK NO. 85, DEPUE, IL Meeting: at Members’ Homes By the time this appears in the ZARJA the holidays will be over and we will be in a new year. I wish everyone a happy and healthy 1998! We held our meeting on November 11th with seven members present. Six of our members attend the 111.-Ind. conventions in La Salle and said it was very nice. I was sorry I was unable to make it as I had a bout with the shingles. We celebrated several birthdays of our members recently. First of all, Pearl Drennan celebrated her 85th birthday with a very nice party at the Pitstick Pavilion in Spring Valley. Pearl made all the decorations and they were beautiful. That is one birthday Pearl, or none of us who attended, will ever forget. It was a rainy, windy day when we went in the afternoon and by 7 o’clock it was snowing and blowing so hard that you could not even see where you were going. We all thank God that everyone made it home safely. There were many tree branches down and power outages in the area. I am sorry to say Pearl was in the hospital with pneumonia, but she is feeling better now. Then on November 8, we celebrated the 90th birthday of our member, Mary Suarez. Mary has 10 children, 30 grandchildren, and 38 great grandchildren! She, too, had a lovely birthday party at St. Mary’s Hall. Mary still loves to dance and is always ready to dance when the band starts to play. Both of these ladies are very good members and attend all of our meetings. They are a joy to be with as are all of our members. On November 9th my sister and I attended a surprise birthday party for my cousin, Joe Sterle. It was given by his two nephews, Mike and Danny Boyle. It, also, was a very nice. That was his second birthday party that day as he was honored when he attended his lodge meeting. Our member Mary Oberch was in the hospital and we are happy she is back home. We all hope she will be able to join us at our meetings soon. Millie Lavrin spent a vacation with her son, Ronald and family in Tennessee. This is all the news. I hope that everyone will stay well so we can again get together at our next meeting. God bless. MARY. JERMENC NO. 89, OGLESBY, IL Meetings: 2nd Mon except Jan and July Dickinson House ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATED Mr. & Mrs. Rudy Stubler 50 Years Ago! Our member, Mary Stubler and her husband, Rudy celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Nov. 15th at a dinner reception in Peru, hosted by their children and grandchildren. Mary has been a member for over 30 years and many of our members are family friends. May they be blessed with many more years of happiness. We are sorry to report the loss of a member, Agnes Supan. She will be missed by family and friends. May her soul rest in peace. Our prayers go out to the family. On Dec. 7th we had a mass at Holy Family church for all the deceased menibers of Br. 89. The following day, the 8th, we had our Christmas Party at the Vermilion Inn. Rose Ann Prey and Mitzi Banich were our committee. First meeting for the year 1998 will be in February. Hope everyone has a Blessed holiday and the best New Year! Sincerely, EUNICE KOMATER NO. 102, WILLARD, WI Meeting: When convenient Parish Center Greetings from Willard! By the time this article appears in print, the holiday season will be behind us. it is always a let-down after all the preparations and the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season. Ann Snedic is on the sick list. She spent 5 days in the Neillsville Hospital due to an infection on her left leg. Alva Trost is back home after spending some time in the hospital due to her diabetes. Mary Dergance had a cataract surgery on both eyes. May they all be blessed with good health. Mr. & Mrs. Walt Backus received another great grandson on Nov. 10th, named Lucas Joseph. He joins a two year old brother, Skyler. The parents of the two boys are Mr. & Mrs. Bill Backus of Aurora, CO. Congratulations to the family! The CCW meeting was held on Nov. 24th. A Baby Jesus Shower was held with many of the members bringing baby clothes. Some of them will go to the Hannah House of Marshfield, some to the Clark County Social Services and some to Guatemala. A Pot-luck lunch was served after the meeting. The deer-gun season opened on Nov. 22nd and closed on the 30th with favorable weather for the hunters. Congratulations to the lucky ones. RSP Architects of Minneapolis held a holiday party on Dec. 2nd at the Minn. Institute of Arts. One of the architects is Michael Plautz, son of Mary Djubenski. Mary and some of the family attended the party. The Slovenska Družba meeting and gift exchange was held on the same day at the Willard Parish Center. After the meeting a delicious pot luck lunch was enjoyed by all with a nice variety of Slovenian foods. Mary Miholovich, age 94, passed away on Nov. 18th. Then, on Nov. 21st, Ann Stremikis died at the Neillsville Nursing Home. Dorothy Walter, mother of Marcia Gregorich, died on Nov. 25th. Sincere condolences to all these families. Our branch 102 held a Christmas party on Dec. 8th with a pot-luck meal and gift exchange. Let’s remember the sick, the shut-ins, those in nursing homes and hospitals. We wish them all good health in the new year. FRIEDA KLANCHER NO. 103, WASHINGTON, D.C. Meeting: 1st Sun. except July & Aug, St. Columba’s Ch. Albemarle St. Even though the first day of winter officially began on December 23rd last year, one usually feels winter has already arrived on the very first day of December. What a busy month! Now that winter is with us, there seems to be mixed reactions with those who dread the cold, the snow, and the ice. Then there are others who love this season for various reasons, including winter sports, etc. Another way to view this situation is to realize the good and the not-so-good, knowing that beautiful spring will be forthcoming. We are so fortunate in this country to be able to enjoy four seasons, where there is something for us all. Rather than despair of minor discomforts, let’s remember these are really some of God’s blessings-there are many more blessings if only we could take time to reflect on them. Our December 7, 1997 Br. 103 Christmas meeting was very enjoyable, and hostesses Tončka Cigale and Iča Zebot served Slovenian pastries which are always a treat—thank you ladies. We wish to extend a warm welcome to the new Slovenian Ambassador to the United States and to Mexico, Dr. Dimitrij Rupel, and his wife Marjetica-Ana Rudolf Rupel. They have now arrived in Washington, D.C. to take up the new position of Ambassador. We hope to meeting both of them very soon at our SWU events. Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year celebration. Warm wishes to all SWU members. NADALJEVANJE HOLA! HOW ARE YOU? First let me start off by saying, I had a wonderful time at the Br. 2 Christmas party on Saturday, Dec. 6th. Were any of you there? I was there to hang around with my little cousins mentioned in my previous article, and just to have fun. 1 always enjoyed myself at those parties. My moiji used to take me along with my brother. With my aunt, and cousin Billy too! But now the boys are 16 and I’m 14. My mom doesn’t go now, I hitch a ride with my aunt Therese and her kids. When I get there, my grandma, (Frances Zibert/Schultz) is my mommy for the day. (You know how grandma’s are!!!) I think that Santa Uways gives out great, cute and fun oys, when he comes to visit the W.U. party. Don’t you? I hope some of you were able to attend the S.W.U. party on the 6th; it would have been really neat for me to meet one of my readers. Yet, I hope to still be writing for the ZARJA next Christmas, now that you’ve seen my picture, you know what I look like. So at the next Christmas Party (next year; 1998) I hope to meet some of you. (If you attend.) As of December 19th I was off of school for 2 whole weeks!! December 19th; Happy 2nd belated birthday to my cousins: Emily and Kimberly Stanczaki. Let me end with this wish; I want to wish you the happiest, safest New Year and a great start to 1998! With lots of love - till next time. Till next time, JULIE IT’S IN EVERY s(love)mi/vim WHO’S HAPPIEST IN THIS FAMILY? Nine year old Anne Leskovar loves animals, especially her own pets! On this picture she is seen with Starlight whom she has to bottle feed twice a day besides giving her hay and grain. Starlight is a young and frisky Jersey and has her own little barn near Anne’s house in Canaan, New Hampshire. She also takes care of 5 chickens and a rooster, Harvey. They were hatched from eggs right in Anne’s playroom. Much to family’s delight, the hens just started laying eggs - up to three a day! Anne goes with her little basket collecting the eggs from the chicken koop made by her dad according to her instructions, with windows, doors and a special place for the laying boxes. When Anne is asked how she selected names for the hens, apparently without concern for their gender, she says, “That’s o.k...they don’t care!” So, the Rhode Island Reds are Harvey, Feathers and Frank; the Barred Rocks are Smokie, Dalma and Peck. Just a few weeks ago the Leskovars got a puppy! She’s a mixed breed, Lab and Spaniel, and a pretty butter color. They decided to name her “Liska” and are teaching her to understand commands in Slovenian! Having so many pets to take care of is “no problem” for Anne and her brothers, Daniel and David, as they take turns keeping their baby brother. Matija, from getting in the way! And, they are all doing well - both the animals and the family! Yes, life on the Leskovar farm is busy and fun! Living with nature is the best way to learn about life, about sharing and about caring. “I’ll never be a city-girl,” says Anne, smiling as she says it! Anne Leskovar and Starlight, her 3 month old calf! 3 Join me this winter for Button Box classes. Everyone has fun! Pittsburgh....Milwaukee....
