Slovenska župnija sv. Gregorija Velikega | St. Gregory the Great Slovenian Church 42/47 Številka - Number / Leto - Year 06. 11. 2011 32. NEDELJA MED LETOM 32nd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME »Olje« za večnost Fr. Enodušno so potegnili z odpuščenim tovarišem in napovedali takojšnjo stavko. Lahko se zgodi, da bodo v večnosti trkali Nekomu na vrata, pa slišali odgovor: »Nimate potrebnega olja; ne poznam vas!« Diocese of Hamilton Liturgy chages coming NEW ROMAN MISSAL - No 3 During the Liturgy of the Word, the only change in the assembly's words is found in the Profession of Faith. The sentence structure has been changed to match the sentence structure in the Latin. For example, in the Apostles' Creed, instead of nine sentences in the present text, we will have three sentences in the new text, to match the number of sentences in the Latin text. This has been done so that the connections between each article of the Creed are more fully expressed. In the Apostles' Creed, the current words: He descended to the dead have been translated: he descended into hell. The word "hell" translates the Latin phrase: ad inferos. It does not refer to the place of the damned, or the abode of Satan. Rather, it refers to the dwelling place of the righteous who died before Christ. The Risen Lord descended to this place to draw these people up to share in his victory over sin and death. Many Eastern icons beautifully express this doctrine by depicting the Risen Lord, standing on top of the grave, reaching down to pull Adam and Eve by the hand and raise them to share in his glorious victory. In the Nicene Creed, there are a few significant word changes. First of all, the prayer begins with: I believe, instead of: We believe. The new translation matches the Latin: Credo. Even though the Nicene Creed originally began with "We believe" it has traditionally begun with "I believe" when used in the liturgy. St. Thomas Aquinas explains it this way: when we pray in the liturgy, we pray as one body. Therefore, "I believe" is fitting. Three other new words or phrases appear in the Nicene Creed. The only Son of the Father now reads: the Only-Begotten Son, born of the Father before all ages. This translates the Latin: Filium Deo Unigenitum and makes clear the unique sonship of Christ. We are all adopted sons and daughters by virtue of our baptism. Christ is the only-begotten Son of the Father. The second new word is "consubstantial". Instead of saying: one in being with the Father, we will say: consubstantial with the Father. This translates the Latin: consub-stantialem Patri, and expresses the true divinity of Christ. Finally, instead of saying: by the power of the Holy Spirit he was born of the Virgin Mary, we will say: and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary. This translates the Latin: Et incarnatus est de Spiritus Sancto ex Maria Virgine. The word "incarnate" is an important theological word which expresses our belief in the humanity of Christ and echoes the words of the prologue of St. John's Gospel: And the Word became flesh and lived among us (John 1.14). During the Preparation of the Gifts, the words of the priest have been slightly altered. However, the only change in the assembly's responses is found in the last line of the concluding prayer. The word "holy" has been added to match the Latin text: Ecclesiae suae sanctae. May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good, and the good of all his holy Church. Holy Sepulchre Cemetery Sunday's Readings I 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading Wisdom 6:12-16 The ancient writer tells us how bright a gift is wisdom, and how much God wishes to impart it. Second Read. 1Thess 4:13-18 or 4:13-14 The death and resurrection of Jesus is our insight into the promise of everlasting life. Gospel Matthew 25:1-13 Jesus tells a story to urge us to be wise. Let every day find us dressed for action, with lamps and oil to spare. Illustration The English comedian Norman Wisdom, who died just over a year ago, began his life in poverty and heartache, but rose to become a much-loved entertainer. His father was a violent drunk. His mother fled the family home, and Norman and his older brother were brought up in a children's home. In later life Norman would tell the tale of how he lost his mother, how he was beaten cruelly by his father, and how he lived for some time on the streets of London. He tried various jobs and quickly lost them, until the day when he joined the army, and that was the beginning of his salvation. The experience of family, which he had so cruelly lost, now came true for him in the friendship and camaraderie that he found. He also received an education, particularly in music. He learned to be a boxer and became army champion. Most of all, and to his great delight, he learned how to make people laugh, and the warm glow that this experience gave him launched Wisdom on the career path he would follow for the rest of his life. Charlie Chaplin called him his favourite comedian, and it was in Chaplin's footsteps of mime and visual slapstick that Wisdom excelled. His plaintive song, "Don't Laugh At Me Cos I'm A Fool", sums up the wisdom of foolishness that Norman discovered in life. Warm friendship, laughter and the simplicity of being a child - this was the wisdom that Norman Wisdom discovered and practised all his life. Gospel Teaching When St Paul discovered the Lord Jesus and learned his ways, he set about telling the whole world about the wisdom that he had found. He even called Jesus "the power and the wisdom of God". He went on to say that God's foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, God's weakness is stronger than human strength. God's ways are very different from our ways. And so we have a lot to learn about life, and about death. Today Paul tells the Christians of Thessalo-nika that the death and resurrection of Jesus has changed everything for us. We now possess a knowledge and an understanding of life that mean we are called to live differently. The resurrection of Jesus has given us an insight into life's mystery; and into what will be, beyond the grave. We live our lives now in the bright hope of immortality. "Resplendent and unfading is Wisdom." This knowledge that our faith brings is not simply concerned with our death and the afterlife. It is a faith for this world and for this life. Jesus tells his disciples to live wisely, to look ahead and think ahead. Foresight is a vital part of wisdom. To be a bridesmaid and to have a lamp is not enough. Reserves of oil are needed for the long wait and for the unexpected. Application How can we get hold of such reserves of oil? How can we be wise? It is true that life itself will teach us many lessons, and some of them will be hard lessons to learn. But there must be a school we can go to, surely, where some lessons, some wisdom can be more gently obtained? One such school, perhaps the most important, is the school of personal prayer. To sit still, in the presence of the Lord, in church, or at home, and let the Lord speak to your heart - this is the place where wisdom can be found. The ancient writer of today's first reading says to us that wisdom is to be found by those who look for her: "One who watches for her at dawn will not be disappointed." Wisdom is a grace of God, which is meant for human hearts. Our hearts are the proper home for this divine gift of grace. Where else would wisdom live if not in the hearts of good and upright people? We are not know-alls. We do not pretend to a superior knowledge of life. Wisdom is a gift that embraces others in love, and teaches us humility about our own state. Let us aspire to be wise every day. Let us ask for wisdom to understand one another, to encourage one another, and to witness to the Lord, who is the power and the wisdom of God.
